Love in the Time of Cholera

Seattle, Washington. 1967

Callie took a deep breath as her body went back to homeostasis after her pleasant high, she ran a hand across her sweaty forehead and struggled to stay awake. Slowly, she felt the other body fall in exhaustion next to her and that brought a lazy smile to her face.

She fumbled the hand of the other woman and when finally found it pulled up gently to force the woman to come to her. The woman hid her face in the brunette's sweaty neck and placed a gentle kiss on her collarbone, her lips still felt the residual tingling having had this woman in her mouth for the last half an hour.

"You're … really good at it." Callie said drawled. She was tired a lot lately which it was associated with her pregnancy.

"I had a great teacher." The blonde replied with a satisfied chuckle. "Although I'm pretty good at everything I do, so ..." She joked kissing the cheek of the woman.

"And also quite modest." Callie teased back. "Give me a kiss before falling asleep again." She demanded turning her face to reach her lover's lips.

"Yes, ma'am." Arizona said with a grin before leaning in and plant her brushed lips with full waiting lips. Both women moaned at Callie's unique flavor on Arizona's lips.

This was common now. For a couple of weeks Callie would wake up with this ... urge ... the brunette woke the sleeping blonde next to her and ... Well, you can imagine what happened.

Callie's pregnancy was progressing. The brunette was officially in the middle of the second trimester and with that came the peculiar cravings that would made Arizona run around to please the pregnant woman.

And then there was the voracious sexual appetite the woman has recently. Arizona did not complain - Oh no, nothing like that - she was more than happy to help the cause. The only problem is that Callie was forbidden sex or rather any excessive - intercourse - after having a little scare a few weeks back.

Callie woke up after a nap with a sharp pain in her lower belly and bleeding in abundance, which was a threat of miscarriage, which is partially normal because it's a multiple pregnancy. The obstetrician - who happens to be Dr. Myers. - Said Callie must be at rest until the bleeding disappeared and so did until two weeks ago.

Which only allows Callie and Arizona unleash their hormones like two horny teenagers. Only with the difference that Arizona had to keep her dick anywhere near Callie just in precautions. So the blonde used her mouth. She used it a lot. And she definitely doesn't complain about having Callie taste in her mouth as often as the brunette asks.

Next day, the couple was having breakfast in the kitchen while Madison was lying on her stomach watching cartoons on TV. Definitely not the right position for the child to eat, but the women decided to let it go this time.

"I've been thinking about something." Arizona said after finishing her food, looking straight into the brunette's eyes.

"Well, that can't be good." Callie playfully joked gaining a short laugh out the blond woman.

"I'm serious, Calliope." Arizona said as she rested her elbows on the counter.

"Okay, what's on your mind?" She gave all her attention to the woman in front of her.

"A house." Arizona said and Callie frowned. "We need a big place. We need to plan this, because there are two babies that are coming really soon, so we need a bigger house where Madison will keep her big-girl room and twins would have theirs." She said with conviction. "Needless to say all the things we have to be prepared for because again It's not just one but two babies. Is two of everything ..." She added in genuine concern.

"You've been thinking about this a lot." Callie said.

"And you haven't? Because this is happening and soon, and we can't just have two babies in our room forever." She released a sigh. "What I'm saying is that we should think about everything."

"We can't afford a bigger house, Arizona." Callie said sadly, her hand instinctively went to her growing belly. "It's too much money and soon I won't be able to work at the supermarket because of my pregnancy -"

"I'll take care of it then."

"I can't ask you to do such a thing, Arizona."

"This is my family, Callie. So don't ask me anything, it's just what I have to do. It's my responsibility."

"It's not an obligation." Callie said again.

"You're right, it's not an obligation, it is my duty." She said back.

Callie scratched her nose. "When you say that, it sound like the time it was your duty to marry Lexie." She wrinkled her face.

"You know that was very different, Callie."

"Mommy, is madied?" The two women looked up the little blonde at the foot of her biological mother pleading with large, expressive blue eyes. "Why are you madied to someone else and not with Mommy? That's why you weden't with us for so long?" The girl asked, no bitterness or anger but with curiosity. The letter R still being an issue for Madison Robin. Do not judge.

The two women looked shocked. Too many questions.

"Ummm." Callie began without knowing what to say.

"I was married, yes. But I'm not now." Arizona softly answered. Callie looked at her quizzically.

"And why aden't you madied to mommy?" Maddie asked carefully, her eyes never leaving her blond mother for more answers.

"Because a woman can't marry another woman, baby." Arizona took her daughter in the arms and carried her to the living room looking for some coziness. Madison sat down comfortably in her lap.

"So how come you were madied before?" Madison continued. Her eyes widened when an idea came to her head. "You were madied to a man?" The girl screamed out in shock earning a snort of Callie who had joined them on the small couch.

Arizona chuckled. Not just for what her little girl said but for how much Maddie it's getting better and better with vocabulary. "No, Maddie. I was not married to a man." She took a deep breath before speaking with her daughter obviously curious. "I pretended to be someone I'm not, then I married Lexie and then I got out of it to be here with you." She said the simplest way she could find.

"But why? Why lie about who you are? I think you're great like this." Maddie said fondly stroking the cheek of her mother.

Callie was lovingly seeing mother and daughter share a moment like this and certainly she could see the tears sting in Arizona blue eyes too. It was absolutely beautiful to see the love and honesty recorded in Madison's face when she said those words.

Arizona smiled fondly at her daughter. "I don't know, sweetheart. Sometimes grownups people make mistakes."

"I don't want to grow up then." Madison said as she hugged the blonde.

"I don't want you to grow up either, I love that you're a very smart dwarf." The women laughed along but Madison pouted in disagree.

"I'm not a dwarf!" She crossed her arms and frowned. Like if she could be more lovable. "I am even higher than Tuck." She said proudly.

"That's because Mrs. Bailey son is younger than you, baby." Callie reminded the girl before laughing softly with Arizona.

Madison was clearly not enjoying it. "I don't want to be a dwarf!"

"You will be my favorite dwarf, don't worry." Arizona smiled broadly at her upset daughter.

"So are you going to tell me what happened between you and Addison?" Arizona asked cautiously as she finish up her makeup at the mirror in the bathroom.

Callie tightened on the simple question. "Everything is fine." She lied. The truth is that she still had to get her friend to talk to her. She quickly remembered the last time she went in search of the redhead.

Flashback

Callie knocked the door with the fist trying to get her friend to open the door. "Addison, I know you're there. Open the door." She knocked louder. "Addison! Your neighbor said she hasn't seen you out. Open the door please." She was about to knock a bit more when the door suddenly opened.

The brunette stepped back to study the semblance of her friend. The generally shiny, silky red hair was now entangled in a messy bun, dark circles were clearly under hazel green eyes, the eyeliners were red and swollen like if she had been crying and she wore a worn pajamas.

"What?" Addison asked irritably, her body blocking the other woman to enter her small apartment.

"You've been avoiding me." Callie said softly still trying to get over seeing her friend like this. It was so not Addison "I just wanted to know how you are and whether you are ready to talk now?"

"I told you I need time, Callie." Addie crossed her arms.

Callie nodded slowly. "What up with the façade?" She really couldn't help asking.

"I have a cold and it's killing me."

"Well, you look awful." Callie said, never find her filter in situations like this.

"Gee, thanks, you look great as well." The sassy redhead said.

"Sorry." Callie bit her lip.

"Addison what are you doing on the door yet?" A dark-eyed Caucasian muscular man made his way to the two women at the door. Callie identified the man as Adam, he frowned when he saw her there at the door with the redhead. The death grip that he holds in her friend's forearm hasn't been unnoticed by the brunette.

"I came to have a chat with my friend." Callie felt the need to say something to break the tension in the room.

Adam just looked at her. "Get some clean clothes and comb your hair, you look awful." He said angrily as he kissed Addison's cheek, almost reluctantly.

He left, leaving the two women alone again so Callie took the opportunity to continue the conversation. "Can we talk now?" She asked warily.

"Not a good time." And with that Addison slammed the door in the face of her best friend.

End of flashback.

"Callie? Callie, where did you go?" The brunette came out of her reverie by Arizona calling her. "Hey, are you okay?" Arizona asked she received no initial response from the woman sitting on the edge of the bed.

Finally, Callie nodded and raised her hands to each sides of the blonde hips. "Yes I'm fine. I just remembered something." She smiled shyly.

Arizona looked with concern, she wasn't entirely convinced, but she decided to postpone the thing. She was late for work ... again. "Okay, I have to go now." She leaned over and gave a chaste kiss on the lips of the brunette. "I'll see you in your control this afternoon. I'm excited about how these two are doing there." Arizona smiled sweetly as she leaned over and gave a gentle kiss to pregnant women bump too.

Callie smiled at the act. "I'd love you to be there for me and not as the OB assistant." Callie remembered with a sad sigh.

The blonde grimaced. "I know, sweetie but since I'm not your husband I can't be there not even as your closest friend." Arizona recalled while stroking Callie's belly.

"I thought Dr. Myers was your friend, you could just ..."

"She is a stickler for the rules, so I don't think that will happen." Arizona cut her short before leaning over and give the pregnant woman a passionate kiss this time. "I love you." She said once she pulled out from the kiss. Her eyes shone in joy and her cheeks flushed.

That feeling seemed not to disappear every time she said those three simple - but meaning - words.

Callie grinned as she started another kiss. "I love you too." She said in a whisper that only Arizona could hear.

Arizona day moving chord routine as usual, she was the secretary for Dr. Mason in mornings and her afternoons devoted her time with … Dr. Myers.

Time was running fast as much as Arizona's mind and yet things seemed not to change. All that seemed to change was Callie's womb.

They still had to talk about many things and instead they postponed those important conversations. It was a relief and frustrating at the same time.

But Arizona noticed. She noticed that despite their closeness, they were distant. It was obvious that what was on their minds make them away from each other every day little by little. Arizona wondered how long they could stand like this.

She quietly entered Dr. Myers office, she immediately went to her small desk and began to select patients for the Doctor this afternoon. She'd thought of ending the day early and smoothly. Being invisible if that was possible. Because despite all the time that has happened so far, she and Stef ... were still in silence.

"Robbins, didn't see you in the cafeteria for lunch." It was the continuously Doctor phrase. Every day after what happened, Arizona always found a reason not to have lunch with the tall blonde.

"Yes, well I was trying this new small place across the hospital street, it's good there." She answered diplomatically.

But then Stef sat in front of her and elbows on the table cold wood. "Seriously we are going to keep doing this?" She asked quietly. Arizona didn't look at her or anything. She was just there praying for Stef to leave the subject alone but she knew it would eventually come. "I'm talking to you, you can't keep ignoring me." Stef said softly even voice.

"We can't do this now -"

"Then when? You've been avoiding me long enough now and let me tell you it's incredibly frustrating... Not to mention really rude of you." Stef laughed angrily.

"Stephanie -"

"No, do not Stephanie me. You have to start being an adult, grow a pair and stop avoiding your problems, because believe me when I say that they won't disappear… I won't disappear any time soon." She emphasized the last part.

"Grow a pair? Really?" She was blatantly diverting the conversation.

Stef roll-eyed at the blonde. "Strange use of words, I know. But I'm serious, Arizona." The doctor looked at her friend with longing, waiting for a sign that she finally penetrated that thick skull.

Arizona looked back wanting to say something, but then her eyes went to the door. "Your first patient is here. So let's work and drop this thing." She hissed through clenched teeth.

The doctor sighed in defeat as she stood up and took her patient to the examination room.

And so the afternoon went on, with a sharp and thick tension between the two women who used to work synchronously and now nothing could be more awkward between them.

"Well, according to the agenda there's only one patient left." Arizona entered the office reviewing all the paperwork to confirm. The name of Callie Torres stressed in her scribbles, letting her know that in about 15 minutes, the brunette would be there for her pregnancy control appointment.

"Okay." Stef said quietly. "Come here, Arizona." She called the woman who remained standing in the doorway.

Arizona looked up to see her boss who was leaning over the mahogany desk. She gulped as she made her way toward her doctor and stood in front of the silent woman.

"Yes?" She fidgeted in her high heels.

"Why are you so nervous?" Stef asked with a smirk.

"Did I do something wrong?" Arizona asked instead.

"Avoiding me, might top the list of things you've done wrong." The doctor looked at her secretary and smiled when the blonde's look went down. "I want you to make me a promise, Miss Robbins." She emphasized in her last name wanting the blonde to understand that this was serious.

"Yes, ma'am." Arizona replied firmly.

"I want you to promise that you'll be completely honest with me."

"What?" Arizona looked puzzled.

"As your boss, I want to know if I can trust you enough and that means you must be honest in everything with me. So I want you to promise that you will be honest in everything I ask you." The doctor said.

"What kind of promise is that -"

"Yes or no." Stef quickly interrupted her.

"Yes, ma'am. I promise." Arizona finally said.

"Good, would you close the door for me please?" She said and Arizona with trembling hands did what she was told. "Now let's talk about you and me and be honest with me. We won't leave this office until you tell me everything."

"What about the next appointment." Next appointment was not any other appointment. It was Callie's appointment and she definitely wanted to be there for it.

"Well, it's on you if we make to that appointment on time. We have exactly 15 minutes, so you better speak without hesitation, are we clear?"

"Yes, ma'am." Arizona agreed for the third time. She fidgeted in her heels waiting following instructions. Now she wishes her father would never made her have authority issues.

"What kind of relationship do you have with Callie?" Arizona wasn't surprised at the question.

"I told you, she's the woman I love." Arizona answered without hesitation.

Stef nodded, smiling sadly. "I just needed confirmation." She put both hands on the cool wood of her desk for support. "I'm assuming Callie's babies are yours." It was more a statement than a question.

"Yes." The short blonde answered anyway. "Stef, I don't think this -"

"How do you feel about me?" The woman cut her short again.

Arizona looked directly into green-eyed woman. "You're my friend -"

"You promised to be honest." The doctor reminded the blonde. She knew there was something more.

"I like you." Came the honest answer from Arizona. Stef straightened immediately. "You're not at all indifferent to me, I like you, Stef and not just as a friend, but -"

"Have you thought about me?" The doctor cut the blonde in her tirade. "Be honest." She added.

"Yes."

"What kind of thoughts?" She pressed.

"Stef -"

"Tic -. Tac, Miss Robbins" Stef reminded.

"Inappropriate thoughts that I definitely should not have on my head, let alone about my friend." She was honest again.

"The day in the bathroom, why didn't you let me in?" Stef started to walk toward her.

Arizona looked down in shame. "That's a private matter." A look of the doctor and she changed her answer. "I'm not a cheater ... at least not to Callie." She shivered in her words, just thinking of all the women she was involved before finding Callie again. She felt she was cheating the brunette every time but technically they weren't together ... that made her sleep at night.

"But you thought of me." Stef was now so close that Arizona was invaded by the elegant woman perfume.

"That means nothing." Arizona didn't dare look up.

"You want me." Stef took the loose hair of the woman behind the ear. It was when Arizona looked up, Stef smiled when she saw the shy eyes and flushed cheeks. "Would be so bad if you'd let yourself drift to the desire?" She asked rhetorically.

"Yes," came the whispered answer. "Why do you want me, Stef?" Arizona did nothing to back away from the woman touch, she just kept standing there looking at the blonde in front of her.

"I ... I don't know." Stef was also honest.

Arizona unleashed a bitter laugh. "You just interested in me for my condition. Usually the opposite happens, but that only seems to work with you and Callie." She shook her head.

"You think she is with you because you have a penis?" Stef frowned.

"No." She replied without hesitation. "She Loves Me. I just thought about that when I first met her."

"And how can you be sure of her love?" The Doctor stung.

"The same way I know I love her and I'll be damned if I do something to hurt her again."

"You mean your marriage?" When Arizona just nodded, Stef understood. They remained silent for a few seconds before Stef say something else again. "You're an enigmatic woman to me." She said out of nowhere.

Arizona looked in bewilderment at her words. "What - What's that supposed to mean" She asked intrigued.

"You are definitely not like any other women but I don't mean about your physical condition, I mean your essence. You're the kind of woman that one never ceases to learn of, you're more than what meets the eye, you intrigue me, you defy me to want to know more of you, you provoke me to feel and experience something different, me dispones about to learn more about myself ... Not everyone can do that and I love it, it makes me want you even more." Stef's hand rolled to Arizona's neck taking their bodies closer.

"Stef -"

"I want to experience what I am feeling. I had never felt anything like it. It's like the rush, the adrenaline, the desire - "

"You feel that just because you know that you can't have me. You feel that because I'm forbidden to you." Arizona said trying to step back but the doctor wouldn't let her.

"Maybe you're right, but I don't care."

"I do care." Arizona could hear someone knocking on the door. "You're on the NO list." She emphasized her words. "You're beautiful Stef, you're smart and funny and passionate in everything you do ..."

"But?" The doctor knew there was a but.

"But I'm not in love with you." Someone knocked on the door again.

"I know you want me." Stef insisted with a smirk.

"Loving someone and wanting someone are two totally different things, Stephanie." And there was her full name again. This time it was warning.

"Arizona -"

"It's not happening!" Arizona cut the woman in her tracks. "As soon as you understand that it will be better for both of us, because if you can't work with me because of it, then let me go, Stef." She gave an ultimatum. The OB looked silently until released a heavy sigh and nodded in confirmation.

Arizona quickly left the office to meet face to face with Callie. "Hey, have you been waiting too long?" She put on her best smile despite all she wanted was to run away and clear her mind.

"Not much, I thought there was no one there, I knocked on the door several times." Callie looked suspiciously at the blonde.

"No, no, I was just finishing the paperwork." Arizona lied miserably. She had to talk to Callie, but this definitely was not the time... or the place.

"Why are you blushing?" Callie's eyes narrowed.

"What? No, I'm not." She laughed nervously. She cursed her pale skin.

"I'm standing right in front of you. I'm seeing it firsthand." The brunette laughed softly as the blonde woman got as red as a tomato in seconds.

"Stop!" Arizona couldn't help laughing with the woman. Her laughter was contagious. But before their laughter went out of control the door behind Arizona opened, revealing Dr. Myers.

"Miss Torres, nice to have you back here." She shook hands with the woman who keeps her physically and emotionally away from the blonde secretary. "Let's go to the examination room, shall we?" She gave her best fake smile.

"I'll be here to finish planning your day tomorrow, Dr. Myers." Arizona said quickly. She was excited to hear more about the twins but after what happened in that office, she honestly didn't want Callie notice the tension between them ... Because it was Callie and she always noticed everything.

"Nonsense, I know how much this is important to you and Callie here." Stef said confidently, she didn't even know why she wanted to put herself through that torture.

Callie frowned at Arizona's attitude, she thought the blonde wanted to be there, that's what she said this morning. And then there was the OB, Callie might not trust her - especially near Arizona – but she could tell the woman was a good person and a great professional, so her perky and lovely attitude was a bit unknown for brunette who was used to seeing her serious and focused face. Her smile was almost false - Callie might add - which raised the alarms in her.

Here was something off and Callie wanted to find out what it was.

"Miss Torres, I assume you're happy." The doctor said as she moved Callie to take her to the exam room with Arizona in tow. "The two of you must be happy."

"About the babies, of course." Callie laughed genuinely.

"And about the other thing too." Stef said casually.

Both women frowned. "What other thing?" Arizona verbalized the brunette's thoughts.

"Well, you know, the fact that you desisted to do the procedure -"

"What procedure?" - "Stef" Both Callie and Arizona said at the same time.

"What? I'm just saying that if you had had the surgery we wouldn't be here right now wondering about the goods of two little babies in the womb of her here." The doctor went on, pointing to the now sitting brunette on the gurney with large eyes in surprise.

"You know?" Callie asked in shock. She thought that was the best kept secret, apparently, she was wrong.

"You didn't tell her that I know?" Stef turned to look at the blonde in concern.

"No, I hadn't said anything." Arizona rubbed on each side of the head.

"You told her?" Callie looked at the blonde now looking for answers.

"And about removing your -"

"Stef! Shut up for once would you please?" Arizona looked between the two women without knowing what to say or do.

"Removing what?" The brunette asked. "Arizona? Dr. Myers?" Neither of them dared to say a word, they just stared in fear at each other. "Somebody better start talking!" Callie finally snapped.

Madness!

All mistakes are mine.
