Here is the fall festival with all its goodness. I can't believe I have written 21 chapters so far. It's amazing. Also I feel embarrassed about all my old chapters at the beginning of the story. Thank you to the reviewers.

Hope you like!

A Life. A School. A Relationship?

Chapter 21

The day of the fall festival finally came, and Hinata was nervous about performing on stage, but for the time being was occupied with helping Tenten decorate. Tenten had explained to Hinata that these festivals were only held twice a year on Campus in the big court yard. She said it was the only time of the year where Tsunade allowed the students to host their talents in front of their peers as well as some possible talent scouts in the area.

The center stage would be brought out and put together by fellow student volunteers so that the dance and music majors could display their talents. The student body committee was in charge of orchestrating the arrangements of exhibitions that were to be shown. Typically the student body delegated 3 hours of time slots for the dancers and 3 hours of time slots for the musicians. The dancers tend to perform for the first 3 hours of the festival while there was still sunlight. At 8 o'clock the stage would be belong to the musicians as different acts would go up. It was whoever wanted to sign up and signed up first that got to have a time slot. Hinata remembered that when Sasuke and her agreed to the festival, he had taken it upon himself to sign them up quickly. The festival would last from 5 to 11 that night.

These festivals often brought in revenue for the school as the public was invited to join if they wished. The study body committee was responsible for admittance fee tickets to the public and was responsible for hiring local food vendors. Volunteers within the school were needed, however, for everything else, like set up, decorating, hosting game booths. Art majors were allowed to own a booth and sale their art if they so pleased. Tenten had chosen participating in the dunking booth since not many students were willing to get soaked. Tenten was all too eager for the festival, Hinata could tell as Hinata helped place streamers around the booth as Tenten painted a quick banner.

It was around 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and they been out here for an hour already setting up. Sai had stopped by to remark how ugly of a job Tenten did as he went off to go design some other booths. Tenten although mad ignored the arrogant jerk. Hinata was happy to be helping and for the distraction. Her and Sasuke's performance wasn't until 7:20 that night. Hinata had asked Neji if he would be coming but he had declined saying he had business to attend to, much to Tenten's disappointment. Hinata thought that is why Tenten didn't mind volunteering for the dunk tank. It wasn't like she had anyone else she wanted to be with during the night.

Hinata had also invited Ino to come to the festival. Ino was so excited about Hinata performing that she blurted it out to most of her old friends and now most of them were coming to watch from what Hinata heard. The only ones who wouldn't be coming would be Shino, Natasha, and Kiba. Hinata had asked Ino if her and Kankuro were officially back together. Hinata was happy to find out that they were.

Her old friends coming to watch Hinata perform with Sasuke made her even more anxious for the night to come. She had saw Sasuke early this morning but not much since then. The last time they rehearsed was yesterday. Hinata was confident she remembered the moves but she was afraid of a simple slip up or not executing the dance as well as it could be done. She also felt a little self-conscious about her piece… This would be her first choreographic piece that she would present to all her peers and friends. It was a little intimidating, but she knew she wasn't going to back down from the chance despite what any of them thought.

After Tenten hung up the banner she made for her booth, she stepped back to admire it. Feeling accomplished, Tenten moved on to helping Hinata with hanging the streamers. However, something caught her eye in the mist of it.

"Hey Hinata," Tenten called sweetly for Hinata's attention. Hinata looked at Tenten expectantly. "Could you fetch Temari for me, if you don't mind?" Tenten asked, innocently.

Hinata nodded and left Tenten to her booth as Hinata headed toward center stage area. Temari was in charge of directing equipment and placement for the stage set up. Hinata spied Temari easily enough as she was standing on the stage guiding the lighting. Temari was not alone though. Hinata witnessed Sakura with her. As Hinata slowly approached, she overheard their conversation.

"We need a brighter spot light," Sakura voiced, nagged with her arms across watching the equipment men.

"We don't have a better one in equipment. This is as good as we got from the school's storage. Plus it's not like we actually need a new one, this one works fine," Temari spoke, dryly. She wasn't amused with Sakura. Sakura's constant pestering and hovering over her shoulder was getting the best of her. Her patience was soon going to run thin and she was going to snap.

"Ugh, how will people be able to see me. Come on we have the budget for a new one," Sakura complained, while trying to be convincing.

"No, and don't worry about people seeing you, no one wants to anyway," Temari stated firmly, slightly annoyed.

"Yea, coming from the bitch that no guy wants to be seen with. You're such a buzz kill. No wonder Shikamaru dumped you. You are so difficult," Sakura bit back bitterly, angered shown on her face.

"What is your problem?!" Temari shouted, losing some of her calm.

"You," Sakura snapped.

Temari remained silent, taking a big breath, instead of letting her anger get the best of her as Sakura shook it off like nothing happened. Sakura began talking about the speaker placement when Hinata interrupted the one sided conversation.

"Temari, Tenten n-needs y-you," Hinata spoke softly, timid of the exchange that happened earlier. She didn't like how Sakura tested Temari and how she brought Shikamaru into the conversation. Hinata knew any mention of Shikamaru was a soft spot on Temari's heart. Tenten was right, Hinata thought, Temari was too stubborn to seek peace with Shikamaru. Temari had been intentionally avoiding where Shikamaru hangs out and even the mention of his name. Hinata wished they would make up already.

Temari sighed with relief and the tension left her body at once upon seeing Hinata. Sakura, however, was not happy to be interrupted as Temari turned to join her friend.

"Don't take too long, I still have other suggestions," Sakura snapped annoyed, walking off stage.

Temari rolled her eyes as her and Hinata made their way back over Tenten's area. On the way over, Hinata admired and noticed other students' booths that were being set up and the creativity behind each one. Hinata was surprise to see Naruto and Saryie whispering besides one of the booths. When Tenten was asking for volunteers, Naruto had said he had to prepare with his band and that he had last minute homework to catch up on. Saryie had said she had other obligations to setting up some booths. Hinata wondered what they could be taking time to whisper about, but before Hinata could speculate further, they arrived at Tenten's booth.

Tenten grinned as she saw Temari. "I figured you could use a break from the pink devil," Tenten greeted with a toothy smile.

"I'll say thanks. Perfect timing, by the way. She was on a rampage about the stage equipment. It's very tiresome working with her. I'm surprised she could even get on the student body committee. Who knew people would elect her and to think I have another year of working with her," Temari complained.

"Ah well, at least you're not the only one having to endure her," Tenten tried to be optimistic.

Temari nodded, as she took a step back. "It's coming along nicely," Temari commented as she analyzed the booth. "If you're the dunkie, who's going to be helping you run the booth?" Temari asked, noticing the empty dunk tank.

"Oh I got Idate. He'll be collecting the money, giving out the throwing balls and giving out prizes. That is, if anyone can dun me in!" Tenten exclaimed confident, answering Temari's question.

"Ah, I don't think I know him. Is he the same year as you?" Temari questioned curious.

Tenten nodded as she began talking about him. Apparently he is a hiphop dancer like Sasuke. Tenten started talking about how she met him through the list of volunteers. After that, Temari mentioned how she has to help run the exhibitions on stage so that everything occurs on time, that she'll be working back stage with crew members for clearing and alternating the stage. Hinata realized that the two of her friends were going to be quite occupied that night.

Soon Temari had to head off back to center stage to continue setting up and Tenten started filling up the water tank. Idate showed up quickly after and introduced himself to Hinata. Tenten then relieved Hinata of duty telling her that she can go get ready now. Hinata agreed and left to her dorm room. Hinata on her way back looked around to see if she spotted Saryie and Naruto again, but there was no sight of them. Hinata wondered what they could have been talking about earlier. Hinata knew it wasn't her business, but after spending a lot of time with them lately, she felt there was more than meets the eye. They were close friends and usually side talking meant something important.

As the night progressed, the festival was open to the public and most of the students were out celebrating. Hinata was one of them; there was a big crowd on campus, bigger than Hinata has ever seen before… All these people definitely made her anxious to perform. When Hinata went back to her dorm room to change and get herself prepared, Sasuke wasn't there. This didn't make Hinata nervous though. Sasuke had told her beforehand that he had a family matter to attend to in the afternoon. He told her he would be back when the festival began. Hinata dressed in leggings and a long loose white shirt.

It wasn't the ideal outfit for a late fall evening but it was for the performance. Hinata and Sasuke had decided to keep the attire simple as to not distract the audience from their performance. The song was about taking every hit thrown at you without breaking. Her outfit was simple but it would help signify the tone for the song. Sasuke was going to wear a black dress shirt and faded jeans. It was to show him as the force of power in the song, while she displayed a flexible, tangible girl. Hinata had thrown on a jacket for the time being for the fall weather, but would take it off when it was time.

Hinata wondered how well their dance will be accepted and understood as she maneuvered through the crowd. Hinata had received a text from Ino that she was there and Hinata went on a mission to find her. Hinata found Ino at a cheesy fry stand and they embraced each other warmly as they saw each other.

"There's my lovely best friend, I'm so excited to see you perform tonight," Ino cheered as they broke their embrace. Ino looked ravishing in her tight leggings companied with long gray leg warmers. Her shirt was a tan blouse with brown arrow designs. Ino wore a gray scarf around her neck with her hair braided to the side.

"I'm so h-happy that you c-could come, Ino" Hinata mentioned, as she looked over her friend, smiling.

"No sweat, if you ever have a performance, I'm going to be there for it," Ino promised smiling. "Now what is this you're wearing? It's not very fashionable," Ino commented, bluntly but in a curious tone rather than disapproving as her hand tugged on Hinata's purple jacket.

"It's for the p-performance, pay no mind to it," Hinata spoke not at all offended by Ino's curiosity. Ino was after all interested in fashion.

"I guess, I'll just have to wait and see then," Ino said, removing her hand, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Is your dance a solo piece?"

"No, I am d-dancing with Sasuke," Hinata answered, calmly.

"WHAT?! Uchiha Sasuke? I thought he hated you. He was a big jerk the last time I met him," Ino said, shocked.

"I thought he h-hated me too for the longest t-time… he had been very standoffish in the beginning, b-but he has been showing me kindness lately. He had told me he misjudged me and that I wasn't who he thought I was. We've been getting a-along now for the pass month," Hinata explained, smiling slightly to herself, thinking about him.

"Huh," Ino contemplated, noticing Hinata's smile and tone. "And what about his brother, Itachi? Has he been around lately? Last thing you told me was that he skipped teaching for about a week after you broke up with him."

Hinata hesitated, she didn't like thinking about Itachi. The small smile fell from her face as she mentioned him. "I've seen him in c-class. He hasn't a-approached me or nothing outside of class though. He tends to ignore me aside from giving me criticism in class," Hinata spoke, her voice mellow, but Ino could tell from Hinata's face that she was concerned.

"Well that's a relief. There's nothing worse than a bitter ex. That's why I'm glad you and Kiba stayed on good terms. The high school reunions would be awkward otherwise," Ino chuckled softly to herself, trying to lighten the mood.

"Yes, I'm g-glad me and Kiba were able to remain f-friends," Hinata said fondly at the mention of Kiba but remarked somberly at the thought of Itachi. "I don't think it be possible with Itachi though."

"Huh? Why so?" Ino asked, concerned and curious.

Hinata sighed and shook her head, not knowing what to say. When Hinata told Ino about her and Itachi's break up… she left out the part of Itachi's drug habit and how he insulted her friends. Hinata told Ino that she didn't like how Itachi made her feel, like he was always putting her down, that he would be secretive around her, and that he was too demanding.

"Well as long as he's not bitter over you, then it's not a problem," Ino remarked cheerfully.

"Who is bitter?"

Hinata and Ino turned to see Kankuro, handling some hot cheesy fries into his mouth. Hinata giggled at the sight of him. She had wondered why Ino was standing by a cheesy fry booth, now Hinata realized it was because Ino was waiting on Kankuro to get his fries.

"No one, Kankuro, me and Hinata are just talking about her ex," Ino sighed as she rolled her eyes.

"Who? Kiba? I thought she would have gotten over it by now," Kankuro mentioned, raising an eye at Hinata.

"NO, NOT KIBA, YOU IDIOT. We're talking about her other ex," Ino said.

"What other ex does she got?"

"OH MY GOSH, I swear you know nothing after everything I tell you."

"Well to be fair, you do talk a lot."

"UGHHH, YOU'RE HOPELESS."

"I'm hopelessly devoted to you," Kankuro said as he winked, trying to be smooth. Ino was looking at him stubbornly. Kankuro was still smiling as he picked up a fry.

"You don't have to glare at me. If you want fries, just ask," Kankuro teased as he lifted the fry up to her face.

"I don't want cheesy fries!" Ino exclaimed, frustrated.

"I do," an old voice spoke up as they reached around from behind Kankuro to grab his fries.

"HEY LAY OFF, PIGGY!" Kankuro shouted, turning towards Choji as Choji stuffed down some fries. "These are mine, I paid for them," Kankuro said as he pushed Choji's face away.

"Sheesh, so greedy," Choji complained, licking his fingers clean. "Hey Hinata, long time no see."

Hinata smiled as her and Choji hugged quickly, making sure to stay away from his cheesy hand. Soon she was embraced again much tighter by another one of her old friends in green.

"Hinata, I have missed you as well! I'm glad to hear that you're conquering your fears and will be performing tonight. We all came to support and show our love to you!" Lee declared, squeezing the air out of Hinata.

"Let go of her, you big goof," Ino said as she pulled Lee from Hinata.

Hinata smiled weakly in thanks and greeted Lee. She was so happy to see them all again. It definitely brought back old memories and emotions. It filled her heart with joy that they all came to show their support. They all chatted for quite some time as Choji and Lee got some food as well. Then they walked around, checking out a few of the booths. Hinata almost lost track of time as she soon saw it was almost time for her performance.

Her and her friends made their way to the center stage area. They wished Hinata luck as she headed to the entrance towards back stage. She soon spotted Sasuke there chatting with one of the crew members.

"Oh good, I'm glad you're here, I thought you got lost," Temari's voice teased, catching Hinata's attention as Temari blocked Hinata's line of view.

"Just a l-little," Hinata joked back smiling at her friend. The butterflies were ripping through her stomach.

Sasuke approached from behind Temari.

"Alright, both of you will be on after this act. Once you get into position, I have the sound guy start the music," Temari stated, as she walked off to the curtain on the side of the stage.

Sasuke and Hinata's eyes locked. His stare was softer than she had seen before and she gulped under his blank face. Her mind flashing back to their kiss in the practice room two weeks prior. She was feeling hot all of a sudden and realized she was blushing. Hinata shook her feelings of Sasuke away. Her mind was racing. This was it. She was going to dance in front of hundred people or more. That thought scared her. This wasn't going to be like in the practice room. There was no time for mistakes. Hinata began twiddling her fingers as she was staring at the stage area. She was nervous and she was being fidgety.

"You're nervous," Sasuke stated, calmly

"A little" Hinata took his statement as a question, not realizing how obvious it was.

"You'll do fine. Don't think, just feel the music," Sasuke advised, the words strangely comforting Hinata.

Hinata nodded. Soon the act before them was over and Temari waved at them to approach. Hinata started to head over when Sasuke grabbed her arm. Alarmed, Hinata stopped and looked back at him, with wide eyes.

"Your jacket, Hinata," Sasuke stated as he let go of her arm.

"Oh right," Hinata said as she quickly took off her jacket and placed it to the side.

They made their way on stage as Temari announced their names and the performance through the microphone headset on her head. Hinata heard the some of the audience members' clap and Hinata grew red since Ino was the loudest of all. Sasuke and her took their positions and waited for the music to cue them.

As soon as the music began, they started the piece that they been practicing for a month. It went smoothly as if it were natural. The audience was trapped in a daze at the routine. Hinata felt confident and she focused only on the song and its meaning. Sasuke was what help gave her this courage. He danced effortlessly and made sure Hinata was the center of the piece. This was her moment and Sasuke knew that. They played that roles they created for the song, showing the struggle of power, of hurt, of love.

By the end, Sasuke and Hinata were out of breath and were staring into each other's eyes for quite some bit as the song ended. The audience began to cheer and applaud. Unlike the last time when their dance got passionate, Sasuke didn't reach out to kiss her and Hinata somehow longed for the contact. Sasuke straightened Hinata as they broke apart and took their bows. Hinata's face was still flush and Hinata could hear Ino hollering.

They left the stage as the new act headed up the side. Temari gave Hinata her warm appraise before moving on to introduce the new act. Hinata felt so good, and so accomplished. She did it… and the audience was receptive to her piece. She felt proud of her self and she was grateful for Sasuke help.

Hinata looked over at Sasuke to find him grabbing her jacket and handing it back to her. Hinata whispered a thanks and Sasuke nodded as he turned to leave. Hinata grabbed his arm, much similar to the way he grabbed her arm before.

"No, I mean t-thank you, Sasuke…. for d-dancing with me, for e-encouraging me, and being t-there for me," Hinata said wanting to make it clear to Sasuke that she appreciated him much more than just him handing her, her jacket.

Sasuke looked into Hinata's eyes deeply, before responding. "That's what friends are for. I told you, you'd do fine."

Hinata nodded, smiling at him. She felt warmed at what Sasuke said. He admitted they were friends… much more than dancers, than partners. They were friends… and he believed in her. He knew what she was capable of. Hinata was overjoyed by his simple words.

They headed out of back stage together and we're greeted by Hinata's friends. Ino gushed over Hinata, giving her many compliments about the dance. Kankuro patted Hinata on the back telling her she didn't do badly, from the look of it. Kankuro didn't completely grasp contemporary dancing, yet he still understood that the performance went according to plan. Choji and Lee also congratulated Hinata. Choji offering to buy her any food she wants, saying that she must have worked up an appetite. Kankuro commented that Choji is only offering because he's hungry himself. Hinata laughed as Kankuro and Choji disputed. Hinata had almost forgotten Sasuke was present.

He was taking in the scene of her friends and their admiration of Hinata. Hinata quickly spoke up louder than expected to get her friends attention. She grabbed Sasuke's hand pulling him forward a bit and introduced him. She explained how he had been helping her with the dance. Then she introduced Sasuke to all her friends. Ino complimented Sasuke on a job well done on the performance and remarked how she's glad to see he's not an ass anymore to which Hinata blushed embarrassed.

Sasuke looked at Hinata curiously. He remembered Ino from that one moment they met in their dorm room. She was rather blunt; he noted which means Hinata probably did think he was a jerk at one point. Sasuke shrugged at Ino comment realizing Hinata was still holding onto his hand as the group chatted. He let go of her hand intentionally and Hinata whispered an apology.

It wasn't like he didn't like holding her hand… her hands were soft and he was use to touching them when they danced, but at the moment, it was strange how natural it seemed when they weren't dancing at all.

His thoughts got interrupted as Saryie slapped a hand on his back offering her congratulations. Sasuke's eyebrow twitched, annoyed. The slap didn't hurt, but it was unexpected and unnecessary. Why couldn't she be normal and get his attention some other way? He pushed the annoyance off his face as he "hn'd" at her compliment. He stayed silent observing as Saryie complimented Hinata, telling her that the routine even looked better now than it did on the tape. Hinata thanked Saryie and then introduced Saryie to the rest of her old high school friends.

Sasuke thought of her old friends as an interesting group of characters. He thought of Ino as the typical popular girl like Sakura, but her personality seemed to resemble Tenten's than Sakura's. Ino's boyfriend, Kankuro, seemed arrogant and outspoken. He seemed pretty annoying and bothersome if Sasuke were to be around him 24/7. Choji seemed to be the friend that hung around at your house for the food, Sasuke thought, and Lee was just an odd ball. Lee was as loud as Naruto, Sasuke believed. He didn't mind getting a taste of Hinata's inner circle of friends. He observed the entangled connection they all seemed to share.

The night passed on and the sun had set as the lights around the festival flickered on. The stage was brightly lit. It was the musicians' turn to shine as the crew members had set up the stage. Saryie mentioned how Naruto's band will be up soon. So Hinata and her friends waited around as the performances got going. Hinata noticed Temari's voice was no longer introducing the acts anymore. A new voice had taken over as Hinata heard Naruto's band, the Nine-Tails, be introduced.

Naruto took the stage along with Jugo, Kimimaro, and Kin. Hinata was surprised to see the band start playing without Sakura. Ino and Kankuro had stuck around to listen to the music while Lee and Choji left to get some more food and to look around. Hinata enjoyed Naruto's singing, but was still confused as to why Sakura wasn't with them and looked over at Sasuke silently begging the question.

Sasuke happened to notice Hinata's look of confusion. "What?" he asked casually.

"Where is Sakura?... I t-thought s-she was…" Hinata trailed off unsure, feeling embarrassed unexplainably under Sasuke's gaze.

"She quit the band," Saryie's answered after overhearing Hinata's question. Saryie was beside Sasuke, watching Naruto's band, then Saryie's eyes drifted over to Hinata.

"Why?" Hinata asked, shocked, looking around Sasuke at Saryie. Sasuke step slightly away for Hinata's benefit and he too looked at Saryie. He had already known Sakura left the band, but he didn't really know why either. He hadn't had much time to talk to the dobe.

"I don't know; you would have to ask Naruto. He told me about it earlier today that the band had gone through some changes last week. He had been stressed about it," Saryie stated, mellow.

"Oh, what a s-shame. Poor Naruto," Hinata said, sympathetically.

"Eh, it seems he's doing find without her," Sasuke interjected as they all turned back to listen to Naruto's performance.

Soon as it was over, the crowd cheered and hollered and Naruto exited from backstage. He was sweaty, but his pride oozed out of him. He chatted with his band for a bit before he parted ways with them before coming over to Sasuke, Hinata, and Saryie.

"DID YOU SEE ME? It was good, wasn't it?" Naruto cheered grinning.

"I don't know, seems like the crowd couldn't wait for you to get off stage," Saryie teased with a smirk to which Naruto pouted.

"You did r-really w-well," Hinata commented, blushing slightly.

"See, I did well! It looks like Hinata's the only one who can tell the truth around here," Naruto retorted, grabbing Hinata in a side hug. An arm casually lying over Hinata's shoulder making her blush deepen. Naruto took no notice of Hinata's reaction. He wasn't upset with his friend's comments; he was still grinning and was being loud.

"Your band sounded good," Ino commented, attracting Naruto's attention. Naruto shifted away from Hinata, dropping his arm and turning to look at the blonde.

"Uh thanks… Who are you?" Naruto asked, dumbfounded.

"Naruto, t-these are m-my friends, Ino and Kankuro," Hinata introduced quickly.

"Oh well, I'm glad you enjoyed the performance. If you need an autograph or something, let me know," Naruto stated, his voice chirper and friendly as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"I wouldn't get carried away thinking you're hot stuff. I personally thought it was mediocre," Kankuro remarked, annoyed at Naruto ego.

"MEDIOCARE?! How would you even know, it's not like you go here. One day you'll see, I'mma get a record deal and have many adoring fans that probably include your girlfriend!" Naruto shouted.

"Yea right, that one day is only in your dreams and –"

"Kankuro, do you always have to start fights, just cool it," Ino scolded cutting him off with a jab to the rib.

"I just stating my opinion, it's not my fault. I don't like big talkers anyway, Ino," Kankuro defended cooling down, looking at Ino.

"Why don't we just go get some ice cream, ok? Come on," Ino stated tiredly as she grabbed Kankuro's hand. "We'll meet up with you later Hinata." Ino said as she turned walking away with Kankuro.

Hinata blushed in embarrassment at her friends and turned towards Naruto.

"I'm s-sorry for w-what Kankuro said. He's not m-much of an artistic p-person and he's very c-critical," Hinata stated apologetically, looking down.

"Awe no sweat, I'm over it. I'm so use to insults by hanging around these two all the time," Naruto mentioned pointing at Sasuke and Saryie, shaking it off, his voice chirper again. Hinata smiled at Naruto's relaxed tone, happy that he wasn't upset.

"So Naruto, why did Sakura quit the band?" Sasuke asked, blandly with his arms across looking over at his friend.

Naruto's tone slightly dropped as he answered. "Ah, she had to go and start her own band. She didn't like being partnered with me. She wanted her own spotlight. She made a rift in the band, since Kin is one of her friends and she wanted Kin to join her in a new band. Luckily for us, Kin stayed, otherwise we would have to find a new base player. Instead of looking for a replacement for Sakura, the band decided to write a new song that didn't require Sakura's vocals. Kin just took her place with soft "ooo" when we needed it," Naruto explained.

"That seems troublesome," Shikamaru's voice cut in, tiredly, as he joined them.

"Where did you come from? I thought you died," Saryie stated, bluntly, eyeing Shikamaru curiously.

"I've been lying around. Being dead was just as troublesome," Shikamaru dryly joked as Saryie rolled her eyes.

"How h-have you b-been Shikamaru?" Hinata questioned, concerned. She hadn't seen him in over a month. The last time she saw him was in the recording studio.

"I've been hanging around," Shikamaru answered vaguely, gazing at Hinata. His answer didn't sooth her worries. Hinata noticed his eyes were droopier than normal. It was as if he hadn't been sleeping much. Though his face was blank, Hinata knew he was depressed on the inside.

"Yea, I have seen you alright. You've been practicing a lot in the recording room," Naruto accused.

"Well you got me," Shikamaru answered, disinterestedly with a shrug of his shoulders.

"What have you been working on?" Saryie questioned, curious.

"A romantic ballad," Sai's voice answered as he appeared beside Shikamaru to which Shikamaru neither confirmed nor denied.

"A love song? Who would you be writing that for-" Naruto's question got cut off as Saryie whacked him in the stomach. Saryie glared at him to which Naruto looked at her with a what.

The answer was obvious to Hinata… Shikamaru must have been working on it for Temari. Who else could he be writing it for? The conversation switched topics as Naruto complained about Saryie hitting him all the time. Sai teased that Saryie hit him, because she had feelings for the knucklehead to which Saryie quickly denied, angrily. Sasuke watched in amusement as his friend's bickered. He glanced over at Hinata who was watching intently the interaction.

Soon the group moved on to explore booths that we set up. They ended up at Tenten's booth soon enough with people trying to hit the target to knock Tenten into the tank of water. Idate was encouraging people to play as Tenten made fun of those who missed the target. From what Hinata could see, Tenten was still dry, which means no one has been able to hit the center of the target.

Tenten waved and greeted Hinata from the tank. Hinata waved back happy to see her friend. Tenten asked how the performance went, but before Hinata could answer, Tenten fell in. Hinata shocked looked around to see, Sai was standing on the throwing mat with two other balls in his hand. Apparently he had bought the balls while Hinata and Tenten were talking.

Tenten soon merged from the water, startled, but then was outrage to find the culprit that did it was Sai. Sai just smirked at her and told her to get back up on the pedestal, because he had two more tries. Angrily, Tenten got back up on the pedestal and no sooner, Sai knocked her in again. Hinata had no idea Sai had such great aim for a small target.

Tenten merged again, slightly muttering curses, but there's not much she could do. She had volunteered for this position, but she didn't like the fact it is Sai who knocked her in twice. Sai waited as Tenten once again got back up on the pedestal and expected to be dunked again. Fortunately though, Sai missed on the last turn. Tenten than mocked him about it. Hinata giggled at Tenten's exchange with Sai.

After the dunking booth; they headed back towards center stage to listen to the other performances. Sai and Shikamaru tailed behind them, moving at a much slower rate. Ino and Kankuro met back up with Hinata by center stage. They were all getting along, surprisingly. Kankuro didn't seem to start up any avoidable arguments and Ino was chatty towards Hinata's knew friends. Naruto was giddy as well as he talked with Ino and Saryie. Sasuke stayed content as he listened to the conversation, speaking when he found room too. Hinata was glad that all her friends were there and getting along. It made this moment memorable, because she had all the people who supported her together.

Temari even joined them soon enough, much to Hinata's surprise. Temari's shift was over for the night, she explained to Hinata. Temari ruffled her little brother's hair in greeting, surprised to see him. Kankuro shook her attempts off getting mad to which Temari laughed about. Ino gave Kankuro a looked that read, 'you better not start another fight'. Kankuro piped down, even though Hinata knew he was dying to say something sarcastic.

Temari's cheer left her as Hinata saw Shikamaru and Sai approaching. Temari's face had gone serious and it was only silently awkward for Hinata and Temari. The rest of the group seemed to be oblivious to the upcoming tension, especially Kankuro, Ino, Naruto, and Saryie. Sasuke seemed to be aware of the situation, but his face was devoid of concern. Hinata couldn't determine how Shikamaru felt. His face was drawn down like it normally was, but he was definitely staring intently into Temari's eyes.

Once they approached, Naruto mentioned how it took Shikamaru long enough and Shikamaru just shrugged at the comment. Sai had caught the mood of the situation. Hinata noticed Sai was carrying a median size plush duck that Hinata had assumed he won from Tenten's booth. It looked rather strange with him holding it, but it wasn't like Sai wasn't strange to begin with.

"Awe, you got a duck?!" Ino gushed over, eyeing the thing.

Sai smiled and nodded.

"How did you win it?" Ino asked, eagerly.

"I was able to dunk a fellow artist into a pool of water," Sai stated calmly.

Ino then turned to Kankuro, grabbing his hand. "You need to win me one, please," Ino begged Kankuro.

Hinata heard Kankuro groaned as he was ushered away from them by Ino. Hinata laughed shortly. She didn't know if Kankuro would be able to win Ino a duck or not. Her laughter stopped as she saw Shikamaru approach Temari. He leaned down to Temari's ear as he whispered something. Hinata could tell Temari was cautious and tense; Temari was analyzing Shikamaru's face as he retreated from her, staring at Temari. Hinata saw Temari nod her head and the two of them left together, quietly.

Hinata, Sai, and Sasuke watched them go. Hinata hoped they were going to discuss their issues and make up. She really wanted Temari to be happy whatever her decision was. Hinata's attention was soon torn to center stage as she heard the announcer introduce Sakura to the stage.

This grabbed the attention of the rest of the group as well. They began listening to Sakura's voice. Sakura didn't have much with her on stage. The spotlight was trailed on her and Hinata could see a pianist on stage that started a soft melody. Then a guitarist joined the tune. It was a slow, soft song. When Sakura's voice started up, it sounded like a wisp of wind gradually growing stronger. Hinata could sense deep emotion behind Sakura's song.

'An arrow shot through my soul…

Taking away my self-control….

Thee air around me faint….

I can't take it….

'It wasn't enough to take…

Take away this pain…

My eyes still see

All that's left of me

'They fell together

The sin they shared

Ripped the heart out of me

They fell together

Long with their sense of dignity

My mother swore

She told me to go'

Hinata was entranced by Sakura's musical piece. It spoke of pain and Hinata secretly wondered what Sakura felt on the inside. Hinata knew from her conversation with Naruto at work that Sakura's parents had divorced, but was there more to the story?

"The s-song s-sounds so sad," Hinata muttered, mostly to herself. The remainders' of the group still overheard though.

"Yea, she's really not the same person on the inside," Naruto mentioned, his voice grave. He was staring at Sakura caringly. Hinata knew he still harbored feelings for Sakura, but that he was trying his best to let go of her.

"What d-do you m-mean?" Hinata questioned, watching Naruto's face.

"She harbors a lot of ill will and sadness towards her parents," Naruto stated, reluctant to talk about her.

"Oh… why?" Hinata gently asked to which Naruto didn't respond.

"She blames my father mostly for splitting up her parents," Saryie interjected, her tone even as she explained. "My father happened to be the gardener for their property. He had been around long enough for him and Sakura's mother to have an affair. From what I've heard, Sakura was the one to discover them at a young age of twelve. She didn't understand at the time. It was when Sakura told her father, that her mother denied the accusation. Her mother told Sakura's father that my father was only after their money and that he forced her. Sakura knew my father was a single man and was scrapping for money so she had believed the story her mom told for a while. My father was fired by her dad and Sakura's parents divorced three months after. She thinks the cause of it all was my father," Saryie spoke. Hinata could tell Saryie wasn't happy to talk about the situation. Saryie had look rather bitter as she too was watching Sakura perform.

"Sakura didn't understand it completely, she neglected to see that her parents never got along in the first place," Naruto commented, somberly. He felt pity for Sakura and was overwhelmed with conflicting emotions of wanting to comfort Sakura and wanting to let her go. Naruto also knew too that this conversation didn't make Saryie happy. Saryie didn't suffer the same turmoil Sakura felt when her parents split up. Saryie never had a mother in her life. Saryie only had her father, who got by with the little salary a landscaper makes. That's how Saryie had met Sakura and had met Sasuke. Her father was employed by the two households. Naruto had met Saryie at school and soon realized they'd known the same people and became friends.

Saryie wasn't proud when she found out about her father at an older age. Saryie had spent many years not knowing fully why Sakura despised her in school. Naruto had been the one to tell Saryie what Sakura had saw when she was little. Saryie then felt ashamed of her father, but grew quickly out of it and had moved on from any ill will towards him.

"Sakura often hides her hurt, by putting on a façade of the queen-bee status that has everything together," Sasuke revealed, nonchalantly. He too knew of Sakura's past and hardship. Even know he could understand her anger and her hurt, he was never very fond of her attitude. He only tolerated being around her because she was a girl of Naruto's affection for a long time.

Hinata felt sympathetic towards Sakura now, slowly coming to understand her and her misdirected hurt. It didn't make Hinata like Sakura or accept her for how she was, but Hinata had new perspective of Sakura. As Sakura's song carried on, the group was thoughtful. The crowd cheered as Sakura's song ended and a new performance emerged.

Naruto, wanting to change the mood, excitedly asked them to play a horse racing game with him, he saw earlier. Saryie agreed, wanting to get away from the previous discussion and Sasuke "hn'd" not at all interested in playing a silly carnival game but would participate anyway. Hinata smiled softly and agreed, knowing that this was Naruto's attempt to shake off bad vibes. Sai declined, leaving the bunch to head off on their own to the carnival horse racing game booth that they saw at earlier.

Once they arrived at the booth, they chose a number for the horse they were going to play. There were water guns at the seats to be aimed at the target. The more accurate your aim on the target the faster your horse will move to win the race. Hinata sat in the middle with Saryie to the right of her and Sasuke to the right of Saryie and Naruto on the other side of Sasuke. They each paid their share to play and the game started.

Naruto soon became outraged at his lack of aim as Sasuke was beating him. Saryie was last as she didn't have much skill with aiming and Hinata was close to catching up with Naruto. Hinata started laughing at Naruto's attempts to distract Sasuke with taunts. Sasuke ended up winning to which Naruto exclaimed best 2 out of 3.

So they paid another around and Sasuke let Naruto take the lead for a while till he started aiming more seriously. Saryie finally got the hang of the game and started to catch up to Sasuke as Hinata was in second place. Sasuke ended up winning again and smirked as Naruto complained that the game is rigid and that he wants Sasuke's horse. Before Sasuke could respond, Hinata's attention was drastically taken by surprise as a hand roughly grabbed her, pulling her up.

Hinata let out a tiny yelp as her eyes drifted up to her handler, Itachi. Hinata's eyes widened at seeing him and became immediately frightened at the way he held her.

"Hinata, we need to talk," Itachi stated, his tone low, his eyes staring down at her darkly.

"Hey, what do you think you're doing?!" Saryie shouted getting up from her seat. Sasuke and Naruto were also up; they were on edge at Itachi's sudden presence.

"I'm retrieving my girlfriend, if you don't mind, brat," Itachi spat in Saryie's direction, annoyed. Itachi's expression serious as he glared at Saryie form. Hinata was too scared to speak as Itachi's hand gripped tighter.

"No she's not! Get your hands off of her!" Saryie demanded as she literally moved to rip Itachi's hand off of Hinata.

"Yea, she's not your girlfriend anymore, she broke up with you!" Naruto claimed, he too was becoming furious, coming forward.

Itachi pushed Saryie away roughly with his free hand. Making her fall back to which Naruto stepped up to catch her. "None of this concerns you three," Itachi said menacingly, turning to look back at Hinata. "We're going to talk." Itachi turned to drag Hinata away but before that could happened, Itachi's grip fell as Sasuke landed a punch to Itachi's face. Hinata gasped shocked.

"Go clear your head. You're obviously delusional. She doesn't belong to you. Leave Hinata alone," Sasuke stated monotone, but his features showed anger seeping out of him as he stood between Hinata and Itachi.

Itachi narrowed his eyes at his little brother as he rubbed his chin. Itachi had every intention to fight his little brother, but before that could happen, a woman's voice cut in.

"I'm surprise you boys can't handle a dispute civilly; after all, what would your father make of this," Tsunade's voice cut in. She appeared beside Sasuke, looking rather peeved. Hinata was thankful someone had stepped in. She did not want anyone to get hurt. Naruto and Saryie were standing by Hinata, slightly behind Sasuke as they all looked at Tsunade's disapproval.

Hinata could tell Sasuke and Itachi were not happy about the intrusion or the words that Tsunade had spoke. Itachi stared blankly at the principle, he no longer seemed hostile. Sasuke on the other hand still had his brows narrowed, still enraged.

"Judging by what I said neither of you want this getting back to your father," Tsunade continued analyzing the group of young adults' expressions. "Sasuke, I suggest you back down. I don't appreciate violence on campus, even if it is justly so. Hinata, do you want to talk with Itachi?"

Hinata shook her head quickly, too stun to speak.

"See there, Itachi you got your answer. Your job would be to respect her decision. Now that you are free of obligations at this time, I would like to have a word with you about your grading policies. Apparently, Hinata isn't as unskillful as you made her out to be in the grading reports you submitted," Tsunade directed at Itachi, reprimanding him then turning her gaze to Hinata. "I watched your performance, Hinata. It was rather inspiring. I can't think that you could be failing dance class with such talent like that. I'll be sure to talk to Hidan later, for now, Itachi please accompany me to my office," Tsunade ordered, waiting for Itachi to come.

The principle and Itachi left, leaving the Hinata relieved, and the others unwinding from the situation. Sasuke was the unhappiest one of the bunch as he kept looking off at where Itachi disappeared to. His fist were clench and his body tensed.

"Man, I'm sure glad that's over. I hope he gets what coming to him finally," Naruto spoke, dryly. His features were relaxed as he scratched at his cheek.

"Hopefully, he'll get fired," Saryie commented, still irritated standing beside Naruto, dusting off her pants.

"Maybe Mr. Uchiha will hear about it," Naruto mentioned.

"Even if so, my father will just push it under the rug like rest of my brother's failings," Sasuke said, his tone laced with malice. "Itachi will always be the same. He'll always take what he has for granted and what he doesn't have will make him mad."

Hinata felt sympathetic towards Sasuke and saw that he was really bothered by his brother. Hinata placed a hand on Sasuke's arm and he immediately cooled down as he glanced behind him at Hinata.

"Thanks for s-stepping up for m-me," Hinata whispered, gently.

"He deserved it," was all Sasuke said as he turned toward his group of friends.

Hinata was overcome with warmth in her heart towards Sasuke. She was definitely startled at the situation with Itachi. She didn't expect him to be so direct in public. She wondered what got Itachi so worked up all of a sudden. Hinata wondered if Itachi was under the influence again. He frightened her and hoped Tsunade would fire him like Saryie suggested.

At least, she wouldn't have to worry about Itachi's threats to her grades anymore. Tsunade was going to take care of that for her. Hinata felt better about that. She wouldn't end up failing, just because she broke up with some body. Her performance was more than facing her fear, but also saving her grade. She appreciated Sasuke for suggesting she take part in the festival. She was also grateful to him for standing up for her. Hinata got lost in her thoughts that she almost didn't hear her phone go off.

"Are you gonna get that?" Saryie mentioned at Hinata's phone ringing.

Hinata snapped out of her gaze, taking out her phone and answering it. To her surprise it was Neji and all too soon her heart just stopped.

"Hinata, your mother isn't doing too well. She's been checked into the hospital. The doctor said it wouldn't be long now."

The words cut through her heart at the devastating news. Sasuke caught the look on Hinata's face as the color was drained out of it.

"I'll be right there," Hinata muttered, hanging up. She looked up at Sasuke without hesitancy.

"I need a ride," Hinata stated.

"Let's go then."

The two of them left to the hospital, saying their quick goodbyes to Saryie and Naruto.

Well this was a long chapter… well writing it felt long. There were a lot of things happening within this. I'm one for creating lots of drama after all. MUWHAHAHA.
