Heartbreak
EPOV
After three hours I meet my family in the waiting room.
"She's going to be fine," I say to a freaked Emmett.
"Is she awake?" He asks.
"No. But she should be soon. You can go sit with her. She won't know about losing the baby. You will need to break it to her gently. I can get a maternity doctor to come and help explain," I offer
He shakes his head, eyes dead.
"Hey. It's going to be okay," I say.
I pull him into a hug.
"The car literally came out of nowhere. He crossed over to my side of the road," he says.
"The police will be investigating it," I say, "your wife needs you right now. You can't focus on what you could have done different because the reality is nothing could could have done would have stopped that drunk driver from hitting you! It sucks."
Wiping tears from his eyes, a nurse leads him through to Rosalie. I see my mother and the remainder of my family sitting patiently in the waiting room.
"I've called Bella. She's coping," Esme says cuddling me, tears evident.
"Rosalie is going to be fine mum," I say rubbing her back.
"It's unfair. I gained a grand baby and lost another with a day," she cries.
There's nothing more I can do. I just hold her tight.
"I'm sorry mum," I say softly.
I was so accustomed to delivering news like this to families. Never in a million years would I dream of doing it to my own family. Rosalie had been an amazing sister in law, and an amazing support to Bella. It hurt she has to hurt.
"I did all that I could, the baby was dead from the impact," I say, "we had to remove it. We're waiting on Rosalie and Emmett's wishes."
She nods sniffling into my scrubs.
"I feel awful. I got what they wanted so much and they did the marriage thing before," I say.
"Neither of you deserved it more than the other," Esme says sobbing.
After a few hours I go in to check on Rosalie. She's awake. She looks okay, but far from fine.
"Hey! You're awake," I say gently.
"I wish I wasn't," she says softly.
Emmett squeezes her hand.
"How's the pain?" I ask surveying her wounds.
"About a 10," She says sharp.
"I'll get the nurse to give you some more meds. We're going to keep you in over night to monitor you for any signs of more internal bleeding. I'll be here in the morning, so I'll see if your fine for discharge then," I say.
"We we're going to call her Clorinda," Rosalie sobs.
"That's beautiful," I say sympathetically, "Clorinda Cullen. She'll always be in all of our hearts! I'll give you time then tomorrow we can discuss cremation."
Emmett doesn't make a word. I want to take away his pain. Now that I was a father I couldn't bare the pain of losing my child.
"I love you both," I say, "call me if you feel any pain through the night."
She nods sadly. I leave them feeling incredibly heavy. I had to tell parents their child hadn't made car accidents, that a grandmother wasn't going to pull through the heart attack. I had the worst job at times.
Arriving home, I hear Bella shushing a crying Chloe. I walk into the lounge room and see her watching doctor phil. I smile at the memory. That man kind of started this.
"Hello sexy momma," I smile kissing her cheek.
"She won't stop crying! I tried everything," she sighs.
"Maybe she wants a daddy cuddle?" I suggest.
I pry her from Bella's arms and after a small bounce I'm covered in vomit. Bella laughs like crazy.
"She has gas," she laughs.
"I'm a doctor. This doesn't gross me out," I chuckle.
She wipes the sick away and smiles down at Chloe who is silently observing me.
"She has a birthmark on her bottom," Bella smiles.
"Like her daddy," I laugh.
"Is Rose Okay?" She says softly.
The worry had been suppressed until now.
"She's Okay healthy wise. Emotionally not fine. The baby died almost instantly. A drunk driver crossed over to their lane and Emmett had nowhere to go. The driver of the other car seemed to miss Emmett's side of the car completely and get Rose. A nurse patched him up before I got there. Rose needed some light surgery, just to fix internal bleeding and we had to remove the baby," I explain.
Tears swell in Bella's eyes. I kiss her cheek, tasting salt.
"They'll pull through," I say.
"Alice called and told me briefly but was crying. I couldn't understand her," she says.
I place Chloe in her bouncer and unbutton my scrub shirt placing it beside me on the couch. I pull her close letting her cry into my shoulder for a bit.
She eventually finishes her cry.
"The insurance company called. They're going to get a builder in this week to check the damage out and they'll start rebuilding next week," I say.
Smiling a little she perks up a bit.
"Chloe will love our home," she says.
Looking down at her in the bouncer, she's captivated by us as we speak.
"I'm sure she'd love a set of keys dangled in front of her face," I laugh.
Bella smiles and knocks me playfully.
"So wedding," I say grinning.
"When she can walk," Bella smiles.
"When can we have sex again?" I groan pulling her to me.
She was stunning. Motherhood made her stunning. She glowed.
"A little while longer," she laughs.
I groan.
"Let me make you some dinner," she says getting up.
I shake my head pulling her back down.
"I ate on the drive home," I smile.
"Rose will hate us," Bella sighs, "we have what she wants and she deserved it more."
"Hey. No way. Rosalie is one of your bestest friends. She loves you, and Chloe! She might be a little cool, but a cuddle from Chloe or your company will cheer her up!" I say kissing her head.
"I guess," Bella sighs.
"Bed time," I yawn, "I need to be there tomorrow to see how Rose is going."
I stand up turning off the TV. I'm watched the entire time. I turn to face her smiling.
"What?" I ask.
"I'm just thinking about how lucky I am. To have had you and I think to give all of this a chance," she says.
I pull her off the couch and kiss her smiling.
"I love you. I'm so glad I changed my mind," I say laughing.
"You changed your mind?" She says
"I mean like, changing my mind about us. I told myself I was the only one who felt this way, so I told myself to give it a shot," he shrugs.
"Only because of Jasper and his amazing tongue," she laughs.
"Don't!" I groan.
She picks up Chloe who had dozed off.
"It's the truth," Bella giggles.
"Sometimes the truth is better left unspoken. I don't need to know anything about what my sister does with tongues in her vicinity," I shudder.
I can see her trying to hold it together and not lose it with laughter. I head to the bedroom, her the nursery. I climb into bed, and smile as she returns. As she climbs into bed I cuddle her immediately, loving the feel of her body curled beside mine.
Sleep crashes down on top of me. I hear Bella get up for Chloe a few times, but am unable to open my own eyes. I didn't realise how tired I was. I hadn't slept since before Chloe's arrival.
My alarm rings, the only thing to actually wake me. I sit up half asleep, turning to see Bella still fast sleep. I turn to kiss her forehead, get ready quickly and head to the door.
"Oh shit," I laugh.
Turning back I race up stairs to walk into the nursery. I walk to Chloe and tuck her in, kissing her head. She's drowning beside a massive teddy bear.
"Daddy loves you, I'll be home as soon as your Aunty Rose is Okay," I whisper.
When I arrive at the hospital, I enter Rosalie's room to see Emmett snoring on an arm chair, Rosalie awake watching TV. She has an unbeaten breakfast tray beside her. I smile at her.
"Morning. You should eat," I say.
"It's gross," she smiles sadly.
"I brought you both danishes," I say placing the bag on her lap.
"Thanks Edward," she says, "that's sweet of you."
"Now. Did you sleep much?" I ask.
"No. I didn't. I couldn't," she admits.
"Let me check your wound and stitches, then we can get you home to your own bed," I say.
"To see the nursery I'll never bring my baby home to," she says tearing up.
"I know this is hard Rose. I'm so sorry. Police have spoken to me and I've given them my medical statement. They've charged the over driver with dangerous driving. He's been denied bail too. His hearing was first. He pleaded guilty. He'll be put away," I say taking her hand.
I can't remember the last time it was just her and I. Possibly never.
"Thank you for everything. You could be at home with your baby but your here," she whispers.
"You're my sister. Of course I'd be here," I say, "Bella's a bit scared you'll hate us."
"This wasn't your fault! Chloe is my niece. I'll need a lot of cuddles from that baby over the next few months. Please don't think I envy you or blame you," she says.
Swiftly checking her wounds I discharge Rosalie all before Emmett wakes up. When he does he looks like crap.
"Hey," he mutters.
"Hey sleeping beauty. You still do that gurgle snore thing," I smile.
"Shut the fuck up," he groans.
Rosalie laughs softly. I smile at the sound.
"You're free to go home. Someone will be by in the next twenty though to discuss what you want to do about Clorinda," I say sadly.
Emmett lets out a sigh, just holding it together.
"Call me if you need anything," I say patting his back.
"Thanks," Emmett mutters tears threatening his composure.
I leave them feeling hopeful the hurt will eventually heal. I know it wont. But what's the harm in hoping?
