Chapter 21

"There are several things happening at once. First, has whoever was responsible for the talismans been destroyed? Secondly, were they also responsible for the black smoke attack or was that a different threat? Third, are both of those connected and were they connected to the imposter who appeared as Meeka? Fourth, assuming these things are all connected to this chaos worship group, how do we stop it? Fifth, what role has Sookie's mother had in all this? And sixth, why is someone implicating my sister?"

I realize Nora's name being dragged through the mud may be of little consequence in the grand scheme, but she's my sister; she's my blood and I will not have her sentenced to the true death for something she did not do. She must serve out her sentence for her part with the sanguinistas, but this is something different.

"If anyone has information or thoughts on any of these six issues, now is the time to share," I state.

"Your sister?" Darius asks.

"Yes, Nora Gainesborough. When I spoke with Agostino earlier, he mentioned her name had been given by someone they questioned as someone who was involved with this chaos worship. I asked if I could be the one to question her; she trusts me."

"Do you believe her guilty of this?" Layla asks.

"No, I don't. But I didn't think she could have fallen victim to the crazy beliefs of the sanguinistas and I was wrong. I hope not, but fear there's a chance. Though the babies- they indicated that Nora is innocent."

"And we will take the word of unborn children?" Jaya asks. "If you have a betrayer in your line, there's-" I growl loudly as my fangs pop but she only pauses a second. "If there is a betrayer in your line, it must be dealt with. This group is more powerful with far more reach than a group of vampires who simply want to consume human blood."

"These children are special," Layla hisses to the fairy. "The fae know the power of children, especially those of royal blood."

"They are of royal blood, but they also sympathize with their father. They could believe her innocent simply because he does," Jaya states. "And you do not speak on behalf of any fae child, Vampire."

Within less than the blink of an eye, Layla is across the room with Jaya's throat in one hand and wrists in the other, Jaya's claws have extended into Layla's skin. "And you'd do well to remember I am not just a vampire," she whispers in the fairy's ears. "And I speak for all who I hear."

Layla mutters something else in an even stranger language than the one she and Darius use to communicate. I glance at him and he doesn't seem worried but I certainly am. I cannot have a fairy representative killed by a vampire, not in my home, not on my watch.

"We cannot attack each other," I remind them. "We cannot add to the chaos."

They speak a minute in whatever language that is before Jaya's claws retract and Layla releases her.

"The girl is innocent," Layla says as she suddenly appears back in her chair as if nothing happened. She strokes Sookie's belly a little and the babies blink at her. "I shall go to Europe and look into this for you, min Viking. The Roman line must be cleared."

"Roman?" Sookie asks. "But Eric's norse."

"But his maker was roman and Godric created his line important," Darius informs us all. "We took notice."

Her words from earlier float back into my head: Just as I sent for Aidan, I sent for you too, Viking.

I look at her and wonder if she really meant that literally. Did she have a hand in Godric being turned? Did she help him choose me? She smiles and nods slightly.

I'm unsure whether Darius created her or the other way around, or something completely different, but I have to know more about that. A public forum simply is not the time, unfortunately, so I stare at her and think: Am I a descendant of your blood?

Is that why she has taken such an interest?

She is non-responsive to my question.

"I shall leave immediately and be back as soon as I can," she states and she stands. She turns to him and they speak a moment before he stands as well. "I need a couple things from our quarters for the trip."

I watch as they head upstairs but I need to know so I zip up after them and move to knock on their door but it opens before I can. I walk in and she shuts the door behind me.

She has her finger over my lips to tell me to be quiet as she pulls something from her pocket. It's a small rose colored stone. She holds it cupped in her glowing hands and it starts glowing too, brighter and brighter, absorbing her light as she glows into it. Slowly, it lifts from her hands and is radiating energy as it hangs suspended in midair.

"It provides us true privacy," she states as she stares at me over the glowing crystal. "You have questions."

"Many, yes. You sent for him? For me? How?" I wonder and she responds with glowing aqua emanating from her palms. "So… you-"

"Found each one of our line, until you. You were the last chosen by me. You were the last one revealed." The last one revealed? As if some force was hand choosing who we- "Until recently."

I look at her a moment before saying, "Sookie."

"Indeed. I saw her coming for you, you for her, Viking. I simply did not know when."

"So I am a descendant of your line?" I ask her.

"Of mine, yes," Darius states and I turn to him, waiting for an explanation. "You are five generations down. My progeny Ekur created Amon who created Caius who created Godric. You are of my blood and no one need know this, not even your progeny," he states as he stares into my eyes. Very rarely do vampires allow information of their makers to become common knowledge. It is too dangerous, especially with a line as powerful as this.

"Of course not," I state. "Are there others? Others in the line that have survived?"

"Seven older than you, twelve younger, not including yours."

"We will protect Nora," Layla says. "The children speak the truth."

"Does Caius survive?" I ask. Godric rarely spoke of his maker, but never well. He could be a big threat to us. "Does-"

"He was not allowed to survive," Darius growls and grips the bedpost so hard that it shatters in his grasp and he throws the splinters. They get stuck in the wall across the room.

"Are you sky fae?" I ask Layla, sensing that any talk of Caius will not be welcome. My curiosity on that matter will go unsated, But there are other questions I have. "Are you related to Sookie? Were you somehow?"

Suddenly, Sookie is standing right beside me, holding a fork in her hand.

"Hey," she says to her stomach. "Mommy was about to eat-" But she notices the glowing crystal. "What's- the babies sometimes have a mind of their own."

"They sense when you are needed, my child," Layla smiles and walks around the glowing crystal to take Sookie's hands, the fork having been dropped on the floor. "Our Viking was asking about your fae origins."

"Oh?" she asks as Layla starts rubbing her stomach again, her fingers dancing over it and leaving sparks of glowing light. The babies enjoy this very much.

"We fae have existed on this plane and many others for as long as there have been planes of existence. Dimensions and realms have no meaning to ones who can cross between them," Layla says as she continues drawing patterns on Sookie. "And as long as there have been fae, there have been all other matter of creatures. The fae came to this plane first as it is near Faery. And where there was fae, so too did the land-fae come, dwarfins, sprites and nymphs. And so too did the dark creatures come, trolls and goblins, weres and vampires."

"So you- came here? Crossed to this plane? Why? When?" Sookie asks. "How old were you?"

"I was quite young, four hundred or so. I was tired of being a royal, stuck in Faery. So I came."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Obviously it didn't work out for her, or… I suppose it did. She seems content here, as she is.

"I wandered for a while, a decade maybe, eating the flesh of animals I hunted. My powers grew stronger, more skilled, and I enjoyed the freedom. I took the guise of where I first came through and as I traveled through different lands, I would often attract attention. I never stayed too long in one place."

I can't even begin to imagine what it was like back then, thousands of years, while the first huge cities were being built, before there were people at least every thirty miles. And she was alone?

Eric sits beside me on the bed and starts rubbing my lower back which feels amazing.

"Unbeknownst to me, I attracted the attention of a brute man, violent in his treatment of all and relentless in his pursuit. I moved quickly, searching for another portal of energy through which I could escape this realm. I didn't move quickly enough. He caught me, trapped me." She speaks as if it's the first time she's ever told the story of her creation. "Did terrible-" She stops midsentence and Darius is next to her immediately and she rests her head against him.

"He meant to turn her," Darius states. "I'd been tracking him for several months. I'd come upon his carnage, killing simply for the sake of destruction, not for energy, not even drinking. Wasted death. When I finally found him, she was nearly drained from his lack of restraint. He would have killed her in another few seconds." It's clear from his face that he can see still the scene. I don't have to imagine what it looked like since I've seen the violence a vampire can do. "I ended him."

"And saved me," she whispers softly and he caresses her face lovingly.

"And saved you," he repeats and leans over to kiss her softly. "Drank the last full mouth full there and fed you mine. I couldn't let such a beautiful creature meet such a violent end." He caresses her face and neck gently as they take a few moments to stare into each other's eyes.

They love each other very much, even after thousands of years.

I turn to Eric and smile before kissing him softly.

Just as we will, min viking.

"It was several decades before I was at peace with my end, a century before I reconciled my old self and my new life. Two centuries before I fell in love."

"And every moment was worth the wait, my love," he whispers and kisses her again before they exchange words in their language.

"So wait." I'm sorry to interrupt but- "You were royalty. You- is there just one royal fae family? Is- does that mean-"

"We are indeed related, by fae blood, and now by vampire blood," she smiles at me. "Which is one of the main reasons why it was necessary to come eliminate this threat. The ancients decided to step in and we volunteered ourselves for this matter."

"Sookie, it is imperative that no one know what was said in this room," Eric says as he moves to kneel in front of me as I sit on the bed. "Do you understand? If people knew we were descendants of the ancients, our lineage… it is not information that should be common. Not even to Pam. She is only told if she must be. To everyone else, they are involved because now it is affecting the vampire world at large, not simply us."

"Yes," I nod. "I understand." It would create a larger target on us or give people a reason to want to use us to get a bigger power. And there are probably even larger reasons why this knowledge should not be given freely, has not been given freely. "The vampire that- the one who tried to turn you- did he have progenies?"

"There is a line obsessed with fae. I fear they succeeded in turning one before I was able to intervene," she says sadly. "I saw too late what he had planned and was unsuccessful in saving your mother, which is another reason to help now."

"You said it took you decades to find peace?" Eric asks and that's- my mother. She seemed unstable from what I saw in her visions, in my dreams. She was definitely there to protect me but she also- something wasn't right either.

"She needs guidance. It is possible you will too," Layla tells me as she touches my face gently. "But that will be years from now, my sweet child."

"Are you happy?" I ask quietly. "Being a fairy and vampire? Are you one or the other?"

"To the fae world, I was erased; they will not recognize me, even though I still have my light. But I get to spend eternity watching the world with my soulmate by my side. This… this is what every creature craves. Is it not?"

"And soon you'll have great great great to whatever power grandchildren," I smile and rub my stomach.

It will be different for you, my child. You are already in love. I see great happiness in your forever.

I look at her and nod my appreciation for the assurance.

"We will leave immediately," she says. She walks over to the glowing crystal and takes it out of suspension. It ceases to glow and she places it in a small bag that wraps around her wrist.

"Als sie ankommt, müssen Sie sie hier zu halten, mit welchen Mitteln," Layla says to him. (When she arrives, you must keep her here, by whatever means.)

"Ich will. Vielen Dank," he replies with a nod. (I will, thank you.)

With that, the air starts to shimmer and she glows softly before they disappear.

verrrrrry unrelated question: Some of you may know that I started as a Buffy fanfic writer. I recently rewatched the series and at the end, I wanted to reread this wonderful fiction I remember reading. I'm trying to find it and can't. I've posted to my LJ and a couple other fan sites. I am desperate to reread it. It was set in the last few episodes of season 7 with the buffy/spike sleeping scenes... The nights they spent together and it got smutty. It took the scenes we saw in the show and added more. I can't find it if I saved it and I wasn't really on LJ then. I can't remember where I might have found it. I thought perhaps by herself or nautibiz but I can't find it on their websites.
