ONTO THE CHAPTER

Chapter 21: Danger Looms

Kakashi stood absolutely confounded at the person lying before him. Last time he saw this girl, she was being buried in the Konoha cemetery, dead. But now here she was lying before him with a subtle smile on her face.

The silver haired Cyclops stepped forward and with a shaky hand, reached to touch the brunette's pale face. His thumb brushed past the lavender tattoo on her cheek when it didn't smudge, he felt a wave of relief wash over him.

"Rin, how… how is this possible? I mean, the last thing I remember is my lightning blade slicing through your heart." Rin looked around the room and looked the blonde Hokage.

"Tsunade, I will only answer the question with Kakashi and the Hokage! Without him, I will not reveal my secrets." Both Tsunade and Kakashi shot a glare at each other. The both said the same thing in their heads; Rin didn't know Minato died.

Tsunade motioned for all ANBU and Shizune to leave, which they did without question. "Okay Rin, spill. Let us know everything that happened, and I mean everything!"

Rin just stared at the blonde before her, "I may have misspoken, but I asked for the Hokage, please get Minato-sensei for me please, he needs to hear this."

Silence filled the room as Rin swiveled her head back and forth between Tsunade and Kakashi. Eventually Kakashi broke the silence with a drawn out sigh, "Rin-chan, this won't be easy to hear but, Minato-sensei… is dead."

Rin's pale hands flew to her mouth in utter shock. Her lips started to tremble as tears welled in her eyes. Kakashi pulled her into an embrace, to show her it was okay, but Kakashi himself was shedding a few tears.

A few minutes passed by as Rin's grief poured out in wails and tears. Eventually she regained control of herself and looked to Tsunade, "So I'm guessing that the reason you're still standing here is that you are the fifth Hokage?"

Tsunade simply nodded but then Rin followed up, "What happened to Minato-sensei?" Kakashi was about to retell the horrific event when Tsunade cut him off, "About 17 years ago, the Kyuubi no Kitsune was forcibly released from his prison, Kushina Uzumaki, by a masked man after she had given birth to Minato's son. With the demon at his control, he commanded it to attack the village, which killed hundreds and wounded double that."

"When the Fourth arrived on the battle field, after making his wife comfortable before her death, he transported the beast away from Konoha and forced the masked man to retreat. With only the Kyuubi to deal with, Minato did the only thing he could; he sealed the Kyuubi into the only newborn baby. And that baby was his son. So after only being alive for roughly an hour, his son became the jinchuriki of the Kyuubi. I cannot reveal the name of the boy, that's up to Kakashi to tell you but know this; that boy grew up without parents and has sacrificed more than anyone has for this village."

Rin sat with a look of shock on her face, all this information hit her like a ton of bricks. Her sensei was dead, his wife was dead and most likely most of her friends that she knew growing up, were dead. Once again she cried into Kakashi's chest for a few minutes.

After grieving Rin just stared at her bed dejectedly, but when a hand landed upon her shoulder she saw the face of her childhood friend and crush. "Kakashi, I… I'm so sorry. I wish I could have come back sooner but so much happened since the accident."

The copycat ninja just smiled at the poor soul, "It's okay, Rin-chan, it's a lot to handle right now, but the quicker we can get this 'secret' out of you, the better."

The brunette just took a deep breath and recalled the 16 years that Kakashi knew nothing about.

"Well, as you know, that mission you were sent on was to stop Kirigakure ninjas from using me as a jinchuriki for the Sanbi. But when you found me it was too late and they already sealed the three tails inside me. Due to its amount of tails being lower than five, my existing chakra coils were able to mesh with the bijuu's."

"When we met up, I was escaping and Kiri ninjas were all around trying to keep their weapon away from the enemy." Kakashi nodded, knowing all of what Rin said was true, "Well you wouldn't acknowledge it, but, the only way to stop me was to kill me. So when I saw you tiring, I jumped in front of your lightning blade in an attempt to kill me, but you immediately passed out due to exhaustion and shock."

"While you were passed out, Kiri shinobi closed in on me, hoping I was still alive. Luckily, since the Sanbi is a turtle demon, I can't be killed easily, even by your lightning blade. But I was still bleeding out on the ground, paralyzed and unable to move. But that's when he showed up and rescued me."

Kakashi was too enthralled in the story to ask, so Tsunade questioned, "Who is this 'he' person; by the sound of it, you were pretty defenseless and there were tons of shinobi closing in on you."

Rin just looked at Kakashi, hoping he was ready to hear what she had to say. She took a deep breath and answered the most important question, "While you were unconscious Kakashi, a strange man with a white spiraled mask came and killed the Kiri shinobi with mokuton (wood release) jutsu."

"He saw me lying down and noticed I was still alive and cauterized the wound with a small Katon jutsu. When I came to, I noticed I was far away from where I jumped in front of you." Kakashi then interrupted.

"Wait, hold up. When I came to, there was still a dead Rin on the ground, when I got to Konoha, they confirmed it was you and it was definitely you being lowered into the ground." Kakashi was utterly amazed that his misplaced guilt was slowly being lifted, only to be replaced by confusion.

Rin just held her hand up to hush Kakashi, and then the woman continued, "I'll get to that in a second; just let me continue. As I was saying, I noticed I was in a new location and I instinctually tried to elude my captor's grip, but that went poorly."

"After trying to free myself I saw his face, well mask. It only had one opening over his right eye, and that eye was… a Sharingan." Kakashi's face paled as his mind tried to assemble some kind of answer, but Rin just continued her tale.

"Setting up a camp, he sat me down and took my barrage of questions. He told me many things, including the answer to your question. The thing you brought back to Konoha was a complex clone with a high level genjutsu on it; it looked convincing enough for the populace and the genjutsu was powerful enough for examiners and doujustu wielders."

"But after he explained that to me, he told me that I cannot return to Konoha, for I owed him a debt and that was to be repaid by joining him on his journey."

Tsunade was mildly impressed by the story but needed more answer. "Rin, what was this journey. And if you weren't supposed to return to Konoha, why are you here after all this time."

"Tsunade, I will answer any questions you two have, but only after I finish my story; okay?" Tsunade didn't like being stood up like this but she wasn't going to get answers if she didn't comply, so she nodded and let Rin continue.

"As I was saying, I wasn't allowed back to Konoha until I helped him with his journey. But I wasn't going anywhere until he unmasked himself. Looking back on it, I wish I hadn't." Both Tsunade and Kakashi leaned in closer, awaiting the moment of truth, but what Rin said, would shake them to the core.

"The masked man refused to take the mask off in the open, so he dragged me to an underground lair. In the cavern, there wasn't really anything, but in the center was a giant tree like structure and in front of that was a stone throne or something like that."

"Sitting in the chair was an old man with stark white hair, and in his left eye was a Sharingan. He revealed himself to be none other than Madara Uchiha. Before I could ask any questions, the masked man made me turn towards him and then his masked unraveled, revealing his identity."

"When I saw his face, I couldn't believe it."

Flashback

"O-Obito?" Rin shot her hands to her mouth; she was now looking at her teammate she thought she lost many months ago. The right half of his face was scarred tremendously but his left half was completely untouched, which coincided with the boulder accident.

"Yes, it's me Rin-chan, it's me, Obito." The brown haired Kunoichi was having a panic attack and started hyperventilating. "That can't be; Obito, you were crushed by those boulders, half your body was pinned and crushed; how did you survive?"

Obito just used his thumb and pointed towards Madara sitting in the chair, "He saved me and gave me his right eye to replace the left one you implanted in Kakashi. For the rest of my body, he put some of the…"

"Obito, enough," Came a stern voice from across the room. "You've already told this girl too much. Now tell me who she is and why you would you bring her here."

Obito's face shifted from one of calm to one of anger, he whipped his head towards Madara and yelled, "This 'girl' is Rin Nohara, my old teammate from when you rescued me. I brought her here because she can be trusted and she can aide in our dream."

The old man shifted back in his seat and brought his hands under his chin. "So you finally realize there is no true peace in the world, eh? Well that's good, but you, Rin was it? What are your ideals on peace; do you think this world can acquire true peace on its own, or is it doomed to a cycle of hatred and war?"

Rin looked at the elderly man and stared into his one visible eye. She pondered back on her own past; how she and Kakashi lost their best friend to war and now Kakashi lost her to a futile strife. 'How much more can the world take? 'How much longer until we lose Minato-sensei, or Kakashi?'

Rin looked back to Madara, self-assured of her response. "I don't think this world knows what true peace is. Every person I know has had a life filled with strife and sadness, and I don't want that anymore; not for me, not for Kakashi, not for anyone!"

"Wise words, girl. Now choose your next words carefully. What would you say if I had a plan to take away the pain from the world, create a world that had true peace and no strife?" Madara sat back and looked at the girl waiting for her response.

Rin pondered the senile man's words, 'Create a world; is that even possible? And if it is, how can he make it with no strife?' After another few seconds, Rin looked the Uchiha elder in the eye.

"I'd say that I trust Obito and if he trusts you, I trust you. But I won't believe you until you prove to me that you can create this world." Rin planted her feet; she planned on holding her ground, but was shocked when the man just chuckled.

"Very good, you trust you're allies but you don't foolhardily rush into plans; you're smart girl. Obito, I'm not destined for this world for much longer, so you must carry out my plans for me. With this girl at your side, it should become easier but remember this; if you betray our goals, the world will never find peace and it will continue this endless cycle of pain." Madara said beckoning his prophet closer.

Obito walked to Madara to receive his instructions and another partner, Zetsu. Rin stood a safe distance away and watched as her ex-teammate turned savior got his mission. Obito then turned after nodding to Madara and walked towards his crush.

He grabbed her hand and brought his eyes to hers. "Rin-chan, we will start the journey now, it will be hard but it will all be for the best; a world free of pain and strife. Are you ready, or do you need anything before we start?"

Rin thought about anything she would need; with materials, she was all set and knew she could always replace them but she wanted to see if Kakashi was okay. 'If I go see Kakashi, I would rest easier but I doubt I'll see him after that if this journey is as long as it seems. I think I'm better off not knowing.'

"Okay Obito, let's get out of here." With a nod the duo plus Zetsu dashed out of the cave to let Madara die in the peace of his own thoughts.

End Flashback

"So over the next few years, Obito and I assembled the Akatsuki as a sort of puppet organization. They consisted of the strongest missing ninjas we could find that would work towards a common goal, capture of the bijuu. Motives ranged from 'the love of the fight' to greed and most were just sadistic."

"The whole time, I stayed behind in Amegakure (hidden rain village) and oversaw the injured, and communications of the Akatsuki. I was a shadow to most members except for the paper angel, Konan, the Rinnegan user Pain and Obito who had adopted the persona of Madara Uchiha."

"Once we were down to five bijuu we started the hunt for the Ichibi. When that failed we moved down to the Nibi, which also failed. When it came to the Sanbi, the Akatsuki searched high and low only to come up empty handed."

"Over the years, I came to trust Obito as a true friend and with that; came his feelings for me. One night, when I had a stressful day, he consoled me and told me he loved me. My mind just leapt to anything it could grab onto, so I returned the feelings without thinking about it."

"A few days later, when were alone, we began to kiss and from there it started to get heavier. I'll spare you the details, but eventually he took off my cloak and discovered my seal from when Kiri implanted the Sanbi in me."

Kakashi inadvertently asked on impulse, "I take it that he didn't like that news?" Rin just looked down and shook her head.

"No, he didn't like it one bit. Not only did I not confide in him, like had to me, but I was now a lamb to be slaughtered for the dream of peace. He tried endlessly to goad me into furthering his plan but to no avail."

"I found out that day, that Madara had corrupted Obito's mind, making him put goals ahead of his allies. He forgot the important lesson you taught him and tried to attack me. I escaped, barely clinging onto life. I ran in the only place I knew was safe, Konoha. The rest, well you know."

Both the ex-ANBU and current Hokage were amazed. Kakashi was amazed both his teammates were alive and one fell to Uchiha curse of delusions. Tsunade was stunned that a third jinchuriki was now under her protection, this wouldn't bode well with Kiri but what they didn't know, wouldn't hurt them.

After a few minutes of digesting the information, Tsunade went back to one final check on Rin. Once confirming her vitals, the Hokage looked her silver haired Jounin. "Kakashi, Rin will be fine, due to the bijuu healing abilities, her wounds are almost all closed but the sprint to Konoha left her weakened and tired. I suggest taking to your home or another private location to let her rest and gain all her expended chakra."

"Understood." With that simple response and a nod, Kakashi picked up his long lost ally in his arms and turned to leave, but he was once again stopped by Tsunade.

"As expected, anything said in this room, until my say so, is classified as an SS rank secret." Once again Kakashi nodded and looked at the still woman in his arms.

He looked upon her tender features and even though she just sprinted hundreds of kilometers after escaping the head of the Akatsuki, she still looked as beautiful as Kakashi could remember. Her brunette hair reached just past her shoulders and her bangs covered most of her bare forehead. Rin's purple cheek tattoos; a symbol of her lineage, filled out and was probably touched up while she was out in Ame.

When he shunshined to his sparse apartment, he laid her down in one of his spare sleeping mats and covered her with a cotton blanket. Kakashi couldn't help but smile sincerely at the woman's petite figure that filled all the right spots. Staring at her petite and parted lips, Kakashi thought back to his academy days when he first saw the brunette beauty.

"Rin-chan, welcome home." The Jounin just sat next to his friend from the grave, watching over her and thinking about his ocular brother. Seeing no need dwell on the past, Kakashi put the past behind him and laid next to Rin in his own mat, for a midday nap. And for once, Kakashi fell asleep with a smile upon his face.

Akamichi Barbeque

The usual Konoha gang sat around the hibachi grills in the restaurant. Sasuke and Sakura sat across from Ino and Kiba, Temari and Shikamaru sat across from Tenten and Neji and the gaggle of single men, minus one ink haired shinobi sat at a third table.

"So Sakura, how's the dating life treating you?" Ino questioned, poking Sakura's fire with a stick. Sakura immediately blushed knowing that explaining her current situation was what she always imagined as a little girl.

"I officially moved into the Uchiha manor yesterday, furniture and all." The pink haired medic just nuzzled into her boyfriend's arm and smiled. "What about you Ino, are you and Kiba going to be moving together anytime soon?"

At this Ino just scoffed, "Nah, Kiba-kun and I have a very open relationship we're more like friends with benefits than lovers." When the canine heard this, Kiba looked to the grill, a frown plastered on his face.

Kiba truly wanted to tell Ino how he felt, but couldn't find the words in his heart. So he took the disconcerting comments and took what he could get.

Kiba's reaction didn't go unnoticed by the couple across from them. They knew it would be impolite to let Kiba's feelings out of the bag, but they knew the flea bag wouldn't commit unless forced to; so plans were in the wings to save or in Ino's case, make, a relationship.

In the next booth, both Temari and Tenten kept pestering their partner about how Shikamaru couldn't be like Neji or vice versa. The lazy shadow chaser looked to the Hyuuga prodigy for any sign of help, only to get the same pleading look right back. Both eventually gave up and continued to nod and smile like the good boys they were.

The group of Chunin and Jounin sat around their grills and ate. The girls all gossiped back and forth while the guys just shared stories about missions. As the gaggle of teenagers chatted away, one lone shadow watched from the corner of the room.

The enigma was silent, observing and studying but suddenly, a coded message buzzed in the earpiece he was wearing. 'Meet…at…HQ…ASAP.' The shadowy figure then shunshined from his concealed location to an underground office, where he knelt down.

ROOT HQ

"Sai, where were you? You know I do not tolerate tardiness and I swear if you were out 'painting' again, I will personally punish you." Danzo stood with all his bandaged glory above his ROOT prodigy. He knew of Sai's amazing progress ever since he was inducted but he also noticed a new habit developing.

Whenever he needed Sai, he would always be a few minutes late. Sai told Danzo he was painting, though he never specified what he was illustrating. The elderly Root leader looked at the loyal subject and sighed, "Just report on your targets."

"The Konoha Chunin and Jounin that hang around the Namikaze have not changed at all. And the Namikaze and his wife are slated to return within the next day." Sai remained kneeling. He hated calling Naruto 'the Namikaze' but he had to keep professional in front of Danzo or he'd be punished.

But Danzo was fed up, "Every week you've been out 'studying' and coming back with this farce about 'nothing happened' or 'very little occurred'. It's obvious to me that this something is holding you back, so for now I'll put you on temporary leave. When I reinstate you, you better have your head cleared of this nonsense. Am I understood?"

Sai nodded, "Hai, Danzo-sama." With a flick of Danzo's wrist Sai was dismissed. Once the artist was gone, the bandaged man waved his hand again signaling another ROOT member to kneel before him.

"Follow the boy for the week. You will report to me daily and on time, understood?" Danzo received a nod from the shinobi and then sent him on his way.

From a small crevice in the wall, a pitch black rat retreated back into its hole. It followed the tunnel behind it until it reached the surface where it was met by its creator. Sai laid his scroll on the ground and let the rat climb onto it. After a simple hand-sign, the rat dispelled into ink on the parchment but the ink slithered around until it spelled out a message for the black haired double agent.

Sai understood and smirked as he created a clone. He sent the clone to paint some landscapes and live scenes. While the clone distracted, the ROOT spy, the original would stay on the down-low until Naruto arrived home. When he came back, Sai would need to ask the biggest favor of his life.

Amegakure

Obito stood atop the tallest tower in Amegakure and assembled the remaining Akatsuki. His robe torn and disheveled, Obito looked out over his puppet city and sighed. Rin was gone and there was only one place she'd go and that was Konoha.

He knew his role as 'Tobi' was now compromised and the plans of Madara were now in Konoha's hands to do as it pleased. Measures were going to be taken and they would have to send a message.

From behind Obito, Zetsu materialized from the ground. The masked man turned around to his tool. "Zetsu, tell Pein that 'Operation Rainfall' is being pushed up." With no verbal response, the Akatsuki spy sank back into the ground to deliver the message.

Madara's prodigy looked back to the distance where the ominous black clouds were infinitely rolling through. "Soon Rin, I promise to make a perfect world, for us." And like that, Obito was gone in a swirl of the Kamui.

To be continued…

(3/3/14) Guys, so sorry for the month and a half hiatus, I finally got accepted to college and schools almost done. For a while I lost interest in writing due to Kishimoto, jerking the readers around in the manga.

Anyways, the main reason for delays was for A. I'm teaching myself to draw better (if you want to see my art PM me and I can show) and B. I need a co-writer to bounce ideas off and to proofread my work.

If you are interested, please PM me and tell me why you deserve to be my co-writer and a little about yourself (to your OWN DISCRESTION)

Well tell me what you think of this building chapter and filler. Next week will be big and predictions will be good for debate.
