Note: Just an AU on what might have happened if Henry hadn't died in "As Time Goes By". The idea actually came from something Osric Chau (Kevin) and Gil McKinney (Henry) said at the Washington DC convention. Basically, Osric said that Kevin and Henry would have gotten along because they were both smart and similar and that Henry would have stuck up for Kevin when Sam and Dean were just using him for translating.
Disclaimer: Supernatural doesn't belong to me or else this would have actually happened.
Making Friends
"Who's that?" Kevin asked warily, eying the pale man Dean and Sam were supporting down the Bunker stairs.
"Henry Winchester." The man replied, his voice hoarse but surprisingly strong for a man who looked like he could pass out at any minute. "And you would be?"
"Kevin…"The prophet's eyes widened. "Winchester? As in…"
"Our grandfather." Sam supplied as they helped Henry into a seat.
"You're grandfather?" Kevin repeated. "Of course he is."
"I'll go get the room ready." Dean announced, leaving the room with Sam on his heels after a moment's hesitation.
Kevin sat there awkwardly, table and papers littering the table. Henry watched him, eyes flashing down to the tablet and the scribbled notes and translations. Kevin shuffled awkwardly, uncomfortable under the stare of the Winchester's grandfather…who looked only a few years older than him…and was their grandfather…
"So their grandfather, huh?"
Henry seemed surprised that Kevin spoke first and simply nodded.
"It would appear so. What is your relationship to Sam and Dean?"
Kevin just shrugged. "Translator mostly. I'm useful."
"You are a man of letters?" Henry sat up excitedly, wincing slightly as the movement pulled at his stiches.
"A prophet." Kevin corrected, slumping into his seat. "Unfortunately."
Henry's eyes widened as he repeated, "Prophet?"
Kevin sighed. "It's a long story…"
Sam and Dean exchanged confused glances at the excited chatter coming from the main room. They walked in, cutting Henry off mid-sentence. Their grandfather had moved to the chair beside Kevin, the tablet and papers pushed aside as the two had apparently been deep in conversation. Dean glanced over at Sam before speaking,
"Making friends I see."
"How's the translation coming, Kevin?" Sam asked, sinking into a seat across from them.
"You should give Kevin some time off." Henry spoke before Kevin could answer. "From what he has told me, you two work him without any breaks and he deserves a break. Regardless of what you two believe, translating is difficult."
Sam and Dean stared, mouths open, as Kevin leaned back in his chair contently. He grinned as Henry began reprimanding his grandsons for their treatment of Kevin. Oh yeah, he could definitely get used to having Henry around.
