Chapter 21: Night of Tragedy

-One Year Later-

It was early morning in Uchiha district. A fourteen-year-old Itachi sat in his home, sliding on his sandals for the day.

"Nii-san?"

Itachi turned around, hiding a small smile as Sasuke stood behind him, rocking back on the heels of his feet.

"Do you think you can help me with my training after class today?" Sasuke asked, a small blush covering his cheeks as he looked to Itachi. "No, I can't, I'm busy. Why don't you go ask father, I'm sure he would be glad to help?"

Sasuke's smile was instantly replaced with disappointment. "But your better than father, even I can see that." He paused for a moment, his eyes drifting to his feet. "Nii-san why do you always treat me like such a pest?"

Itachi gave a sad smile, his hand beckoning Sasuke over. As the younger brother walked forward, he stumbled back when Itachi poked his forehead. "I'm sorry Sasuke, maybe some other time." His eyes visible darkened. "I don't have time for this today."

"You always do that, you poke me in the forehead and say 'I'm sorry Sasuke.' And you never have time anymore." Sasuke said rubbing his forehead, as Itachi walked out of the house.

'Nii-san you keep getting further away…'

That afternoon Sasuke and Menma left the academy, each planning to return home. As they walked past the training grounds at the academy Sasuke stopped. "I think I'm going to train some."

Menma turned, his head tilted with confusion. "Want me to come with you?"

Sasuke shook his head, his dark eyes watching as a few other students threw shuriken towards the wooden targets. "I'll see you tomorrow."

Menma nodded, turning he left, making his way home. Neither boys knew of the tragedy that would soon unfold.

It was late in the evening when Sasuke finally left the training grounds and returned home. Running through the streets of the Uchiha district.

'I'm so late!' Sasuke thought to himself running towards his house. He came to a stop when he something move from the corner of him eye. Narrowing his eyes, Sasuke looked to the top of one of the telephone poles. "That's weird, I could have sworn something was there."

Looking back in front of him, his eyebrows furrowed. "What's going on? It's still too early for everyone to be asleep."

A pit formed in his stomach as possible scenarios began running through his head. However he ignored the feeling, making his way home. Turning down one of the roads his stomach dropped.

"W-What?"

Kunai and shuriken littered the walls, blood was splattered on the ground as it seeped from the corpses of his clansmen. "What's going on?" He called out but no one answered, the pit in his stomach grew as fear washed over him, sending chills up his body.

"Oh no, Tou-san and Kaa-san!" Sasuke yelled out, sprinting to his house.

Dropping his bag on the ground he walked into the kitchen. "Tou-san, Kaa-san are you guys here?"

Nothing.

Walking from the kitchen, Sasuke slowly made his way towards their bedroom, his body still trembling in fear. His hands grabbed onto the door handles, but before he could open the door his eyes widened when two thuds hit his ears.

"N-No…" It wasn't above a whisper, Sasuke's body continued to tremble, his eyes watering as he slowly opened the door.

In the center of the room lay two bodies, one of his mother, and one of his father. His breathe caught in his throat as he stepped forward, his eyes traveling to the pool of blood around them.

'Kaa-san…Tou-san.' Sasuke's eyes were torn away when Itachi steeped out from the shadows with a blank expression.

"Nii-san!" He called out, tears threatening to fall from his eyes as he looked to Itachi. "Tou-san and Kaa-san… Itachi, who could have done this?!" Sasuke screamed.

A single shuriken flew past Sasuke's body, impaling itself into the door. Grabbing his shoulder as his shirt ripped. Suddenly realization flooded his brain.

His heart dropped.

"I-It…y-you did this?" Sasuke whispered in horror.

-Flashback-

Itachi carried Sasuke down the streets of the Uchiha district, making their way towards their home after a day of training.

"I can get down if you want, Nii-san." Sasuke spoke looking down to his bandaged ankle.

"It's fine." Itachi replied turning his head to give Sasuke a small smile. Making their way down the street Itachi stopped when Fugaku stepped out in front of them. Sasuke peered over Itachi's shoulder when he stopped.

"You're late, what were you doing?" He asked, looking at Itachi.

'Tou-san.'

"I need to speak with you now, hurry up lets go."

The three now sat in the family meeting room.

"You are my son indeed. Only a few years in ANBU and you've already become captain. And for tomorrow's special mission I've decided to come along."

'Tomorrow?' Sasuke thought to himself, his head dropping.

"If this missions is a success you are sure to become recognized as one of Konoha's strongest." Fugaku spoke sternly, his own sharingan activated. "Do you understand?"

Itachi remained expressionless. "You don't have to worry so much…besides." Itachi's attention moved to Sasuke, a small smile forming on the younger boys lips.

"Um, Tou-san…tomorrow…"

"Tomorrow's mission is not only for you but also for the Uchiha Clan." Fugaku said, cutting Sasuke off.

Sasuke looked down, his hands clutching his pants while his bangs covered his eyes. "I'm sorry, I must refuse tomorrow's mission."

"What did you say!? Have you lost your damn mind, you know how important this mission is don't you!" Fugaku yelled out, his fists clenched tightly.

"I have to attend Sasuke's academy entrance ceremony tomorrow." Sasuke's head shot up, his eyes shifting between his brother and father. "Its customary for relatives to go to the academy ceremony, you received a notification, didn't you Tou-san?"

Fugaku let out a sigh. "I get it, I'll go to the ceremony."

"Congratulations to you all on entering the academy, please work hard to become a shinobi and give your full effort in supporting Konoha." Hiruzen spoke looking down at this year's newest shinobi trainees.

Sasuke stood in the crowd, slowly turning around his eyes filled sadness as he saw his father standing in the group of adults, his eyes closed as if he were asleep. Though he was surprised to see Naruto standing a few feet away, a warm smile on his face as he waved to Sasuke who waved back.

After Hiruzen's speech Sasuke and his father now stood in front of an unknown jounin. "This reminds me of when Itachi entered the academy." The large man spoke. "They are brothers indeed."

Sasuke's small smile dropped at the mention of his brother.

It was always a comparison.

"Look after him like you did Itachi." Fugaku spoke making the man shake his head. "Looking after him? A genius from the start of the academy, Itachi didn't need any looking after. There isn't a single student who I've taught who was as good as him."

"I think the praising is going a bit overboard."

The man shook his head again. "Not at all, I expect great things from you too, Sasuke. Become a strong shinobi like your brother."

Before Sasuke could say anything he saw tackled to the ground, causing both Fugaku and the instructor to look at Sasuke who lay flat on the ground, a red haired boy sitting on top of him.

"Hey Sasuke!" Menma shouted looking down at Sasuke with a large smile. The instructor instantly took a step back when he saw the whisker marks.

"I-It's you!" He yelled out, making Menma look up at him with confusion.

Sasuke pulled himself from underneath Menma, he too looked at the man with confusion. 'How does he know Menma?' Sasuke thought to himself watching as rage covered the man's face. Luckily before the man could do anything Naruto made his presence clear.

"Yes?" Naruto asked, his eyes narrowed, waiting for the man to move. However he instantly took another step back before walking away.

Sasuke and Menma looked at Naruto with confusion as he turned to them a small smile on his lips. "Sorry about that Sasuke, when he saw you, he just had to come over. Sorry if he interrupted anything Uchiha-san."

Fugaku's eyes narrowed. 'Smart ass.' "No its fine, I didn't know my son knew Menma."

Naruto nodded, looking back to see Menma helping Sasuke, who was glaring at him, onto his feet. "Yes, they met a little while back. Menma, we should get going, I did promise to get you some ramen."

Menma's eyes instantly brighten at the mention of the food. "Alright! Let's go!"

Naruto smiled, looking down to Sasuke whose hands were now buried inside his pockets. "Sasuke, would you like to join us? If that's alright with your father that is?"

Sasuke's head shot up, looking to his father with pleading eyes. "Sasuke needs to get back home and begin his training." Fugaku spoke sternly looking to Naruto who gave a soft sigh as he looked back to Sasuke.

Bending down to his knees, Naruto gave Sasuke a small smirk, raising his right hand he poked the six-year-olds forehead. "Maybe next time, alright?" Sasuke was taken back by the remark, his hand moving to his forehead. It was the same thing Itachi did to him, yet somehow it was different.

Sasuke watched as Naruto and Menma walked off. Naruto's hand resting on Menma's head while the boy looked up at the white haired man and smiled.

'I wish father was like that.' Sasuke thought looking to his father who had already begun walking away.

"What do you mean you're not coming to tomorrow's meeting?"

Sasuke woke to the sound of his father's voice. Turning over, he pushed himself out of the bed and made his way towards the noise.

"I'm leaving for a mission tomorrow, it can't be helped." Sasuke heard Itachi say.

In the room Fugaku's eyes narrowed. "And what kind of mission is it?"

"Its top secret."

"Itachi, you serve as the Uchiha Clan's pipeline to the village nerve center, you do know this right?" Fugaku asked sighing when Itachi gave a small nod. "Beat that into your mind, and make sure you're at tomorrow's meeting."

"Sasuke." Itachi spoke, catching the attention of his mother, father, and of Sasuke who stood on the opposite side of the door. "Once you finish using the bathroom, go straight to bed."

The door cracked up, Sasuke poked his head in, giving Itachi a grateful smile he spoke softly. "Okay."

Fugaku immediately stood up. "What are you doing walking around at this hour? Hurry up and go back to bed."

Sasuke gave a sad smile. "Okay." Closing the door he returned to his room.

Itachi and Sasuke sat on the back porch of their home, both looking up at the starry sky. The silence broken when Itachi spoke, not taking his from up above.

"You probably hate me, don't you?"

Sasuke looked to Itachi with shock.

"It's okay, I understand."

"No, that's not how I feel." Sasuke called out making Itachi finally look to him. "It's just…"

Itachi gave a small, barely audible laugh. "Being a strong ninja has its own problems, when you have power you become isolated and arrogant. There aren't any other brothers like us in the world. I'll always be there for you, vent if it's just an obstacle for you to overcome. Even if you hate me, that's what older brothers are for."

-End Flashback-

Sasuke looked up to Itachi in horror as the prodigy began speaking. "Foolish little brother, I almost pity you."

'Mangekyo sharingan, Tsukuyomi.' Sasuke's body went rigid as images of his family and clan being killed passed through his mind, over and over and over again. Grasping his head he fell to the floor onto his stomach. Slowly his eyes drifted up to his brother, no this man, he wasn't his brother.

"Why…tell me…why you did do this?" Sasuke asked slowly, his breathing labored from the genjutsu.

Itachi remained emotionless as he spoke. "To test the limits of my power."

"Your power? You're telling me you butchered our clan, our parents to test your abilities?" Sasuke asked panting heavily.

Itachi's eyes closed, his sharingan fading away. "It is of great importance."

Sasuke burst forward, his arm cocked back. "You're insane!" He screamed out, but was silenced when Itachi's fist collided with his stomach making him double over in pain. Tears began falling from his eyes as Itachi took a step forward, ready to kill him.

"I'm scared!" Using what strength he had left, Sasuke bolted from the bedroom, tears falling behind him as he ran onto the main streets.

"Please I don't wanna die!" Sasuke screamed out, coming to an abrupt stop when Itachi landed in front of him. "N-No this can't be real."

"I have acted like the older brother you desired for one reason, because I wanted to discover how powerful you truly were. I needed to find a worthy opponent to test the limits of my abilities, and you have that unique potential. Now that you hate me, you have the desire to defeat me which is why I'm going to allow you to live. Don't you see, it's for my own benefits. Like me you may be one of the few who can use the mangekyo sharingan. However there is a catch, take the life of your best friend, you must kill him." Itachi spoke making Sasuke watch look in horror.

"No…"

"Kill him, just like I did."

"Do you know anything about Shisui Uchiha? He threw himself into Nakomo River last night. You and him were the only two that didn't show up at the meeting, who were close to him, you considered him your best friend."

Sasuke's eyes widened. "That was you, you killed Shisui!"

"How else do you think I obtained these powers?" Itachi spoke. "In the main hall of Naka Shrine under the seventh tatami mat from the far right there is the clan's secret gathering place. There is where you will find all of the secrets belonging to the Uchiha clan, it tells of the visual Justus true purpose. If you discover how to activate it you will be the fourth person including myself to use the mangekyo sharingan. To insure that happens, well that's enough reason to let you live." Itachi took a step forward, making Sasuke take a step back.

"Don't worry, you're not even worth killing, my foolish little brother. If you wish to kill me one day, in hate and revenge. By all means cling to your pathetic life. And then one day when you have the same eyes as mine come back and face me." Sasuke collapsed to the ground as Itachi sent him into another genjutsu. With that Itachi turned his back on Sasuke, and the village that he won't return to for five years. Every happy memory was buried deep within.

Tears began brimming in his eyes as he felt the familiar chakra belong to his last friend. Turning Naruto stood behind him, his ANBU mask covering his face.

"You should get going." Naruto spoke softly.

The tears began falling down his cheeks, his mask finally shattering. Itachi walked forward, bringing his hand to his mouth he began coughing up large amounts of blood. His heart and lungs began to burn. Itachi could feel himself falling forward, only for Naruto to catch him.

Naruto looked down as Itachi gripped his sleeves tightly, blood covered his chest. "For how long?" Naruto asked.

"How long have you been sick?"

Itachi slowly looked up, blood trailed down his chin. "I have to hurry." He ignored Naruto's question.

Itachi pushed himself up, though his body screamed for him to stay. He was in turmoil, everything hurt, from both pain and sadness.

Naruto watched as Itachi stumbled back. "They will be after me. I have to leave." He spoke, blood continued seeping from his lips and tears seeped from his eyes.

Another one, another friend.

"Don't look at me like that." Itachi spoke closing his eyes. "Even with that mask on I can still see you." Naruto swallowed hard as a smile covered Itachi's lips.

"Thank you, Naruto." Itachi spoke, his eyes remained close. "For everything. Please take care of Sasuke for me."

Naruto nodded, without thinking. "I will."

"I'll see you around." Itachi took a small step back and turned around. 'I entrust him to you, my one and only friend.'

Naruto turned his head, his eyes landing on Sasuke's unconscious body.

"Naruto!"

His head shot up as Kakashi, Hiruzen, and a group of ANBU ran towards him. "What happened?" Kakashi called out looking to the lifeless bodies of the Uchiha clan. Walking forward he gently picked Sasuke up.

"The Uchiha Clan has been massacred, Sasuke was only on left alive." Naruto spoke looking down at the lone Uchiha.

Sasuke was the only remaining Uchiha in the village. It was truly a night of tragedy.

It wasn't until a few days later that Sasuke finally awoke. He lay there for a few moments, at first he thought it was a dream, no some horrible nightmare but when he saw the bandages that covered his shoulder he was met with cruel reality.

Pushing himself up and off the bed, Sasuke pull on the pants and shirt for the bedside table. Walking towards the door he slowly opened it. Seeing no nurses or doctors he sprinted out of the hospital.

His lungs burned as he arrived at his old house. Stepping over the cation tape that lined the door he walked inside just as heavy rain began falling from above. It was like the sky was weeping with him.

"Welcome home, Sasuke." His mother stood in front of him, smiling down at him.

"Don't push yourself so hard. You and your brother are completely different people."

Sasuke sprinted into the kitchen from the sound of his mother's voice.

"Kaa-san!" His heart dropped when he saw the empty room.

"Now then, that's my boy."

"Tou-san!" Sasuke turned, running towards the master bedroom. His eyes instantly began to water when he saw the outline of his parent's bodies. Biting his lip, tears began to rapidly fall from Sasuke's eyes until powerful sobs began to rack his body. He just lied there, crying out his grief for hours until he couldn't cry anymore.

Sasuke currently sat at the end of the dock of one of Konoha's lakes. His legs dangled in the water as he stared at his reflection. It had been a week since the massacre, he had attended the academy the following day much to everyone's surprise. He took a seat at the very back of the class, next to the window. Sasuke ignored everything and everyone, he just sat there, his eyes focused on the outside. Throughout the day he could feel Menma watching him, watching as Sasuke remained in his own world. Neither spoke to one another. It was too painful, as Itachi's words were still etched into his brain.

"Like me you may be one of the few that can use mangekyo sharingan, but there is a catch take the life of your best friend."

Menma was the person who came to Sasuke's mind when Itachi said that. Even though Menma was annoying, stubborn, and obnoxious, he was Sasuke's only friend.

'Mangekyo sharingan, I've never heard of it before. He said one of four, so who are the other two.'

Sasuke was broken from his thoughts when he felt a pair of eyes on him, quickly turning around he saw Menma walked at the top of the hill. When their eyes met both boys instantly turned away.

Sighing, Sasuke his knees to his chest, and looked back to the water. Grabbing a stone pebble he through it onto his reflection. Watching as the water began to ripple, however rage covered his face as he saw the image of his brother staring back at him.

"Foolish little brother, if you wish to kill me one day in hate and revenge. Surviving in such a manner as this, by all means cling to your pathetic life. And then one day when you have the same eyes as mine come back and face me."

Sasuke's hands balled into fists as he stood up and dove into the water.

'No matter what darkness may await me ahead, if it means killing you, I will face it head on. No matter what I will get that power, put my own way. From this moment on I am an avenger.'

Away from the village, Naruto walked through Kusagakure (Village Hidden in the Grass) dressed in a black cloak which covered his face and body he made his way into one of the bars. His eyes instantly landing on a lone figure who sat at one of the bar chairs.

'Seems he was right after all. If you're trying to hide you need to do better than that.' Naruto thought walking forward towards the bar table. Taking a seat next the women, he watched as she swung back a glass of Sake as if it were water.

"What can I get for you, sir?" Turning his attention away from the women, Naruto looked to the bartender, his hood covering his face as he spoke. "I'll have what she's having."

The bartender nodded, setting a single bottle of Sake and a cup. Pouring the liquid into the small cup he swung the fluid back, instantly feeling the burn. Covering his mouth Naruto let out a low cough making the women next to him smirk.

"So what are you doing in Kusagkure?" The male bartender asked leaning over the counter.

"I guess you could call it business." Naruto spoke looking down at the clear liquid. "I'm looking for someone."

The bartender nodded, grabbing one of the glasses he lazily began cleaning it. "Well I wish you the best of luck in finding whoever it is."

Naruto smirked, his eyes drifting the women next to him, watching as she took another drink. "Oh, I already found her."

The women spit the drink from her mouth her head turned so fast Naruto wouldn't be surprised if she got whiplash. Naruto reached into his pocket and pulled out his leaf headband setting it on the counter causing the women's eyes to widen.

"What the hell do you want?" She spit out, clearly not yet knowing just who Naruto was, only that he was a Leaf Shinobi.

"You know, it's pretty easy to track you down with all the money you're spending on alcohol. You haven't changed at all."

The bartender turned his head putting away the glass casually. Naruto slowly lifted up his hands, the women and bartender watched at his hood fell, revealing oh so familiar snow white hair.

"It's been a long time, Kaa-san." Naruto spoke smiling at none other than his mother, Tsunade Senju.

As soon as the words came from his mouth, Naruto was pulled into a bone crushing hug. Smiling as his face was pushed into her neck, the familiar feeling of safety washing over him.

Tsunade's own face was buried into Naruto's neck as his arms wrapped around her waist. "Too long." She whispered softly.

Pulling him from her body she smiled at her son. "You've grown up, Naruto."

His face had become narrower since the last time she saw him. He had lost any amount of baby fat he once had, his hair was also grown out, now just barley covering his dark eyes. He was tall, even when sitting Tsunade could tell he towered over her, much like his father. Her eyes narrowed however when she saw the scar that covered his left eye. Raising her hand, she gently traced her finger over it.

"It happened almost as soon as I got back to the village. Do you know what happened?" Naruto asked looking down as Tsunade's hand pushed his hair up, smiling when she saw the blue diamond on his forehead.

"Rumors."

"Have you spoken to Tou-san at all?" Naruto asked causing his mother to sigh. "Once or twice but he never told me anything about you, other than you were alive."

"He was doing the village a favor then…" Naruto spoke under his breathe, however it wasn't quite enough for Tsunade heard him loud and clear.

"Something happened? Are you okay? Are you hurt? Is the village okay? What happened?" She yelled out causing his sweat to drop.

'She really hasn't changed at all.'

"I'll tell you everything, let's get out of here first." Naruto spoke reaching into his pocket he grabbed handful of coins, over enough to pay for both his and Tsunade's drinks.

Naruto and Tsunade now sat in her hotel room, Shizune was out in the market shopping so they had to time to talk privately.

"So tell me everything." Tsunade spoke.

"A lot has happened since I returned. I became a Jounin, joined ANBU, and witnesses a lot of death. More than I wanted to." Naruto spoke, looking to his mother who gave a soft nod.

"The life of a shinobi isn't an easy one, Naruto."

Naruto gave a small laugh. "There is one thing though." His eyes closed, reopening to reveal a set of fully matured sharingan, and to say Tsunade was taken back was an understatement.

"The sharingan! How the hell do you gave those! You're not an Uchiha." Tsunade yelled out, her eyebrows raise din surprise.

"They were gifts from two friends." His smile dropped as he looked down at his hands. "You missed a lot, Kaa-san. I wish you could have been there."

Guilt flooded over Tsunade as she looked to her son. "Naruto, I'm so sorry. But you know how I feel about Konoha, hell it was hard enough to let my only child go back."

Naruto nodded. "I know Kaa-san, I get it, really. It's just sometimes I needed my mother, and Tou-san wasn't around often."

Tsunade pulled Naruto to her chest once more, her eyes began watering causing him to look up. "You alright?"

"It's just the alcohol, I'm fine." Tsunade spoke releasing her grip on Naruto. "But what about Minato and Kushina?"

"They're dead."

Tsunade's eyes widened.

"The Kyuubi attacked the village and they gave their lives to protect it." Tsunade nodded, looking down to her necklace.

"I moved into the compound."

That caught her attention.

"Moved in after I got back, I can't believe we didn't live there when I was growing up, how come you never told me about it?"

"Too many memories I guess. Too many deaths." The Senju compound was were Tsunade grew up. It was made by her grandfather for her grandmother, it was were her mother and uncle grew up, then her.

"Well I'm glad it's in good hands."

Naruto gave a soft smile. "Listen, Kaa-san I didn't come here just to chat."

Tsunade nodded. "I was expecting that. What is it?"

Naruto reached into his shirt, pulling out a small test tube of blood causing Tsunade to raise an eyebrow.

"A friend of mine is sick, I want you to see if you can figure out what it is and if you can make a cure." Naruto spoke, holding the test tube out to his mother who just sighed. "Please, you're the best medic in the world if anyone can figure it out it's you."

Tsunade let out a loud sigh, grabbing the container. "Fine."

Over the next week Tsunade, Naruto, and Shizune analyzed the blood, figuring out Naruto's friend had a rare disease, luckily for Naruto, Tsunade was able to create an antidote, though it won't cure the victim it would reduce the pain, and keep it from getting worse.

And now, the family was bidding there farewells.

"I need to head back now, Kakashi said he would cover for me for a few weeks but that's all." Naruto spoke looking to his mother who wore a sad smile. "I know, we need to get going too, it was bad enough that you were able found us, now we have to worry about others."

Naruto could see the pain in her eyes, letting your child go fight was something hard, he know knew first hand, though Menma was just in the academy. Stepping forward Naruto wrapped his arms around Tsunade, bringing her face to his chest. "I'll see you again, the wait won't be so long this time, I promise."

Tsunade nodded into his chest. "Don't die." Her grip tightened. "And be careful."

Naruto released his grip. "I will." Turning he smiled at Shizune. "It was good seeing you again." Naruto brought his surrogate sister into a hug.

Turning he gave both women a farewell then left for Konoha. However before he could make it back home he stopped.

Pressing his hand into the ground he spoke. "Summoning Jutsu."

A single black crow appeared in front of him, pulling out a package of pills he gently tied them around the bird's leg. "You know what to do."

The bird called out before flying up into the sky, vanishing from sight.

Heavy rain poured down in a village far away, where a lone figure sat, his black eyes watching as the rain hit the metal towers. However his attention shifted to a black blob as it got closer. Sure enough a single crow handed on the window sill.

The figure stood up, walking over he saw a small package tied to its leg. Pulling the bag off the crow exploded in a cloud of smoke leaving only the package and a small note in his hands.

Itachi,

Take one every day, they will dull the pain and keep your illness from getting worse, and don't worry no one knows. When you need more just send me a summon. And be careful.

-Naruto

'You're impossible.' Itachi thought taking the bag of pills to the bathroom.

However lay on the bed was a single black cloak covered in red clouds.
