Fragile: Day 6

Dinis Spiro, District 12, 35 years old

The tension could have been cut with a knife. Dinis carefully watched his two allies as they sat there, silently staring at one another. Tired eyes flared, and angry fists clenched. Honestly, he was amazed they were both still alive. He thought that if one of them stepped a toe over line, if one of them even dared to say anything, they'd all die in an instant. Craziness would ignite and they would all become murderers. He wanted nothing to do with it.

Slowly, he added another log to the fire and watched the flames dance in the light wind. The wavering flames were almost calming. But there was also that tempting, evil side to it. It was so beautiful, yet, so very dangerous. He thought it was almost as manipulative as mankind. As he stared into the red, flickering flames, something scary at the back of his mind ushered him to touch it. It whispered: 'Go on. It will feel great. It will give you power'.

Shaking his head, Dinis stood up, sliding a small knife into his back pocket. He told himself it was just incase. He had finally realised that he could not be too careful in this arena-especially when Nicklaus was mere feet away. His mind was a flutter of madness. Recent events in the camp had proven to him that he couldn't trust anyone- not even his old friend, Nicklaus. Dinis, the man who had been brought up a trustworthy and faithful man, was suddenly very alone in this world. He could no longer fall asleep in peace, he could no longer turn his back without expecting a knife in it; he simply could not do it. Sweat formed on his brow and he quickly wiped it away with the back of his hand. He did not dare to look at himself0 for at that moment, he was a red-faced- wide eyed individual; barely a glimpse of the old him. He asked himself what he would actually do if he was to return home. He'd never have the life he left, and he definitely would not have the life he had spent so long fighting for. Angry tears filled his eyes and he turned away as not to be seen by his old "friends".

"We need more wood," he muttered under his breath, knowing they'd barely hear him.

He expected to be met with silence, but, to his surprise, Audrina responded abruptly. "No we don't."

Her voice was ice-cold. It was as if she knew exactly what Dinis was up to. He couldn't tell if this was out of fear of being left alone with their other ally or out of fear of being betrayed by Dinis.

Dinis did not respond. Quite frankly, he did not care. He no longer had it in him to care. Instead, he just walked away, far into the depth of the trees, his hands gripping onto his weapon with all his might. Leaving his two allies alone with the anger they held was probably not the best idea, but as far as Dinis was concerned, he wasn't even sure if he was going to return. Being alone in these woods seemed like the safest option in that moment and the further he walked, the more he felt the weight lift of his shoulders. Why should he have cared what those two did while he was gone? Maybe it would make his job a whole lot easier if they killed each other.

Maybe he could do it. Set off alone, never look back, never think about that wicked "friend" ever again, and survive. The only question was; was it worth it?

Maybe he wouldn't know that question until it was too late.

Although, no matter how much he tried to shake it off, no matter how much he tried to ignore it, those four words that Nicklaus had whispered to him echoed in his head. It had been yet another night of no sleep, made even worse with his added paranoia. Nicklaus had come over to him in the night and crouched beside him with that ever-charming smile spread across his face. Only, this time, he would not be fooled by it like he had been for so long. Dinis opened his mouth to say something, only, what was he to say? He had no words for that man. He'd been lied to and taken for a fool for so long, yet a pang of faith hung to him. He was his friend and he could not disrespect that.

"We could do it."

It was those four words he thought of now as he walked through the trees. Those four words that left him lost for words.

Once upon a time, Dinis would have agreed and high-fived his friend. That time was long gone. All he could do that night was frown and remain motionless. The kind smile that had been on Nicklaus' face quickly turned into a deviant smirk which unnerved Dinis greatly. "Think about it. All we have to do is kill her, kill this whole damned arena, and win. You and me. 'Cos trust me, no matter what you heard, no matter what happened, you got me."

Dinis wanted to scream in that moment, he wanted to shout, and a part of him- a wicked, evil part which worried him greatly- wanted to kill. But instead, he withheld all the anger and turned over, turning his back to his once friend. Nickalus could have easily killed him in that moment, stuck a knife deep in his back, but here he was, still alive and breathing the morning after. He had come to the conclusion long ago that Nicklaus was insane and highly deluded, but, thinking about it, maybe they all were.

Dinis let out a deep and hefty sigh before bending down and finally collecting the wood.

He had only collected a handful when he heard something he wished he never heard, something which would break his soul all the more, and something that would make these games even messier than they already were: His name.

Nicklaus Nesh, District 12, 35 years old

If he wasn't insane before; he definitely was now.

The arena had given him a place where he could kill in freedom and it was so much more fun here. He was no longer killing the weak, injured victims of war, he was killing real trained fighters, and some of them were trying to kill him too. They wouldn't succeed; he was sure of that much. He was an intelligent individual who was far more trained in killing in style. Sure, the others could wield a sword, shoot a bow, or aim a gun, but he could tactfully deceive, and that was the best form of murder known to man.

As he watched his friend turn into a simple shadow amongst the trees, he narrowed his gaze. He still did not know how he was going to kill that man. As much as he hated to admit it, for once in so long, he had someone who was a genuine friend to him. He had ruined that friendship the other night, and he thought that maybe Dinis would no longer think twice about killing him, but Dinis had remained loyal through everything. A part of Nicklaus, a kind part that had been hidden long ago, could not ignore that.

"You're fucked up," Audrina muttered. She was staring at him with an ice-cold gaze; the same look she had given Dinis just moments before. "You both are."

Nicklaus lifted the side of his mouth into a slight smirk. "Then...why are you still here?"

"Maybe because I know you'll kill me if I leave."

Nicklaus shook his head. "No. You could have left last night. I would have let you run- as long as you were smart about it...Tonight however, that's a different ball game."

"Yeah well, I don't plan on being here tonight."

"Looks like we both have something in common."

Audrina narrowed her eyes at Nick. He just sat there, waiting for her to twig onto what he was saying. It took a while. She was a smart girl, but she was sleep deprived. The bags under her eyes had significantly taken away from her otherwise 'decent' appearance. She was a mess. They all were. It was great.

Nicklaus could tell the moment she finally understood. Her eyes widened and she brought her bottom lip into her mouth slightly, nibbling on the dry skin. Nicklaus let out a small chuckle, but even he couldn't have told you why. Was it his evil, sinister side coming through once more, or was it the nerves? He could barely tell the difference anymore.

"Watch yourself," he said.

"No."

This didn't take Nicklaus by surprise, but it did catch his attention. He knew she was a tough cookie, that is what had intrigued him, and he almost respected that rebellious objection. Then again, he couldn't expect anything less from a fellow rebel. It would have been too Capitol-like for her to remain obedient, and that was enough to make any rebel sick to the stomach.

"You watch yourself."

Her voice was vicious, sinister even, and he liked it. He didn't quite like what came next though. She was an intelligent woman, and even someone as skilled as Nicklaus could not predict her next move. He didn't even know she had a knife in her hand. She pounced like a raging lion towards him, knife held out towards his neck. He had just about enough time to block her, holding her away at an arms-length. He was so much stronger than her, but having a knife waving just inches away from his face brought him a sweat and made his arms quiver. He pushed her forward, making her stumble towards the fire. He had hoped to set her alight, but, unfortunately, she missed it. He quickly glanced around, but no other weapon was in sight. That same smirk quickly reappeared in his lips.

"You planned this...I'm impressed."

She did not reply, instead, she leaped forward again. Suddenly, a marvellous thought came to him. He let out a large shout, shouting the name of the one person who he thought would come to help...not that he needed his help. 'Kill two doves with one stone' he thought. He could bring out the murderous side of Dinis, showing him that the two of them were't as different as he thought, all while getting rid of Audrina forever.

"Coward," Audrina spat, but Nicklaus only continued to smirk.

He continued to block Audrina's advancements. However good this woman was at fighting, he could hold her off for as long as he needed. There were even a few occasions where he could have taken control of the situation, but he didn't. That was, until Audrina got a 'lucky shot'. The knife sliced across his shoulder, drawing blood.

"You little b*tch," he hissed. Audrina was quickly on top of him, digging her sharp nails into his wound, he let out a pained sound as he struggled to keep her knife at bay.

For a moment, he thought his old friend would not come, that he really did want him dead. That was until Audrina's eyes widened in shock, blood dripped down from her mouth and onto his face.

Then, her body fell limp on top of him. He let out a deep breath and pushed the dead girl off of him.

Dinis was stood above him taking deep breaths, his eyebrows furrowed together.

Nicklaus let out a shaky laugh. "I've never been so happy to see your stupid face."

Dinis just shook his head and refused to look down at him. "I-I," he took a deep breath before his eyes locked with his. "I only did it 'cos I still owe you one." He then pointed his weapon at Nicklaus. Although he knew he could take Dinis, especially in the shaky state he was in, Nicklaus held up his hands in surrender. "Now, fuck off," Dinis spat.

"Din..." Nicklaus whispered. He felt a genuine sadness fill his soul as he looked up at his friend. Perhaps being so close to death had brought his mortality to the forefront, but in that moment, he wanted to cry. No. No, Nicklaus Nesh was not a tearful man. He wanted to scream. He wanted to go on a murderous rage. He wanted to do something. Anything.

"Go."

Nicklaus swallowed his pride and got up. With his body shaking with anger, Nicklaus ran. He ran as fast as he could and did not dare to look back at his once friend. He was thankful for him, and that was something he thought he'd never say.

He ran and ran. His vision blurred, his mind filled with nonsensical thoughts, and his nails never stopped digging further and further into his palms.

He ran until he came across a cave. Inside, he heard the gentle cries of a female and all it did was fuel his anger even more. Taken over by emotions that he had not felt in so many years, emotions he thought he was immune to, he reached into the cave and pulled out the woman.
"COWARD!" he screamed. Then, he strangled her. He pushed her against the rocks and wrapped his harsh hands around her gentle neck. His hands became wet with her tears. He forgot about the pain in his arm. He forgot about everything. He just wanted to kill. It was only when she slumped in his arms did he see her red hair and realise she was a Capitol girl. He laughed. He'd done it. He had killed a Capitol girl. She probably deserved it. Or did she? He wasn't sure anymore. His menacing laughter soon turned into a sob and he sat there crying. Then laughing at the fact he was crying. And then crying some more.

He was insane. He was 100% insane.

It all made sense now.
He was a monster.
