All mistakes are my own
Rossi came into Lou's house, his chest heaving from running down the path so quickly. Lou and Diana looked up at him with eyes brimming with sadness. "Where is he?"
"He's in his room," Diana sighed before leaning into Lou. "He won't come out and he won't let anyone come in. He's petrified that Duvall will come and get him back. How did this happen? I thought my son was safe."
"I've got my team looking into what happened and a protective detail coming here to protect you all. They shouldn't be too far behind me. Duvall won't hurt Spencer. He's come so far in his recovery and I won't let Duvall take that away from him. Can I go and see him?"
"Please," Lou nodded. "Try to get him to come out."
Rossi quickly made his way up the stairs to Spencer's bedroom. He knocked on the door.
"Go away," Spencer shouted, his voice cracking. Rossi closed his eyes and listened as he heard him cry. He opened them as he calmed himself down.
"Spencer, it's Dave. I won't let him hurt you. You'll be protected."
"This was supposed to be over," Spencer coughed before letting out a sob. "I don't want him to touch me again. He'll find a way to get me. He always find a way to get what he wants."
"Do you remember when I found you?" Rossi asked gently.
"I'll never forget," Spencer answered.
"I instantly wanted to protect you. I know the pain that he put you through and I saw first hand how much it affected you. We talked about never losing the connection we have and I will protect our bond with everything I am. I won't let him hurt you again. I'll kill him before he can hurt you. Please let me in. You don't have to be afraid."
Rossi waited as soft footsteps came to the door. The click of the lock was the most amazing sound he'd ever heard. Spencer appeared in front of him with a tear-stained face. He quickly brought him into his arms and rubbed his back in a soothing motion. He remembered doing the same when Spencer was going through withdrawal. "You're safe, son."
Lou stirred the coffee in the cup in front of him. His thoughts lost in the swirl of the beverage. Rossi walked into the kitchen and leaned against the counter. "What's wrong, Lou?"
"What's wrong?" Lou shook his head. "Nothing except that the man whom tortured and abused my son is out there looking for him. Diana and I, we can't lose Spencer. We just became a family. I spent eighteen years away from my son. I spent all that time not being able to be his father and I won't lose him to this monster."
"You won't lose him. I made a vow the day I found him to keep him safe and that is exactly what I plan to do. I have to go to the police station and meet with my team but I'll be back as soon as I can. You have two units outside that will keep you safe. I don't want to take any chances though. Do you have a gun?"
"No, I don't," Lou shook his head. "I used to but I got rid of it."
Rossi leaned down and brought out his spare sidearm. He checked the gun over and clipped on the safety. "Lou, this is my spare gun. I want you to have it till I get back. Keep the safety on unless Duvall comes here. I'm not taking any chances."
Lou took the gun. "If he comes here, I'll kill him. I won't give him another chance to hurt my son."
"Don't let Spencer get hold of that either," Rossi advised. "He's in a dark place, Lou. I don't think he would try to do anything but I don't want to risk it. With everything going on, I can only imagine what is going through his mind."
"Spencer wouldn't kill himself."
"We can't know that, not fully. He barely survived his time with Duvall. Faced with more abuse and forced drug use, he might see a way out that would break our hearts."
"I won't let him see it," Lou promised. "Just catch him, Dave. Catch him and make sure he can't hurt my son ever again."
Rossi walked down the path from the house. Every part of him screamed inside to go back and stay with Spencer. He had parked down the street so the protection detail could park outside which they now had. As he opened his car door, he became still. Spencer deserved a normal life. He deserved to go back to college, finish his education and have a life of fulfillment ahead of him. At every turn, Duvall seemed to be there to stop any chance of all that happening. He couldn't let that happen.
He had lost James the day he had arrived into the world. He wasn't about lose Spencer.
His jumbled thoughts focused again on getting to the station. He slid into the driver's seat and put the key in the ignition.
Every cell of his body froze as he felt the cold tip of a knife touch the back of his neck.
"Hello, Agent Rossi. Nice to see you again. You're going to drive till I tell you to stop and then we're going to finish this," Duvall's voice came from the back seat.
"Why can't you just leave him alone?" Rossi said angrily. "He doesn't love you."
"YES, HE DOES!" Duvall screamed. "Drive till I tell you to stop."
Twenty minutes later
The cold air made every breath he took visible as he got marched into the middle of a field by Duvall. His gun was now in Duvall's hands after it was forced from him in the car at knife point. "You won't get him. He's protected by his father, mother and the police."
"I'm a patient man when it comes to getting Spencer back. You however, I want to deal with you now. You're the reason I lost him all the time ago. Spencer is mine and we'll go somewhere no-one will find us after this. Once I've got rid of you, no-one will stop me from taking him again. Not even his mother and father. Once they're dead, he'll have no-one to love but me."
"You touch any of them and I'll kill you," Rossi growled.
"His mother made this a challenge with her words full of shit, Agent Rossi. I'm going to enjoy killing her."
"You've lost it completely," Rossi sneered as rage overflowed his heart. "You'll never get Spencer back! His mother and father will make sure that never happens. You can kill me but he'll never be back in your hands."
"I guess you'll never know," Duvall chuckled as he put his finger on the trigger. "Goodbye, Agent Rossi."
The rustle of the trees became disturbed by the fluster of birds that erupted from them. Every bird running from the sound of the gunshot that echoed through the frosty night air.
Lou and Diana both watched as their son pushed around the food on his plate. They didn't argue when he put down the fork even though they needed him to eat something. Spencer pushed the plate away and buried his face into his hands. "I-I can't handle this."
"It's okay," Lou said as he tried to comfort Spencer. "Nothing is going to happen to you."
Spencer stood up from his chair so quickly that it flew back. "YOU THINK I'M JUST WORRIED ABOUT ME!" he yelled.
"Spencer, calm down," Diana soothed. "Please calm down."
"No," Spencer shook his head. "He'll hurt everyone to get to me. I don't want you all to get hurt because of me. I would rather die than let him hurt anyone."
"Don't you ever say that," Diana scolded as tears threatened to fall down her pale cheeks. "No-one should ever say that. I would die to protect you. Nothing will ever change that. You're my son, my precious beautiful little boy. We brought you into this world and we will do anything to keep you in it. You need to be strong. I need you to show the strength that you showed me when I was ill. You showed no fear in the face of everything I put you through. Please, we need you to stay strong to get through this."
Spencer took a deep breath in and tried to calm down. "I'm scared, mom."
"It's okay to be scared," she whispered. "Just never let the fear take you over."
All three looked to the phone as it began to ring. Lou walked over and picked up the handset.
"Hello," Lou answered.
Spencer watched as his father's eye's widened. "Dad, what is it?"
Lou brought the phone down to his chest. "Spencer, something's happened."
