So Weak
A/N: As promised, after receiving some feedback, here's the new chapter. This is a combo of Trent and Nick's POV but if the timeline was too confusing let me know and I'll make sure to post two chapters next time. These next few chapters build on Nick's mental state some more, and on his relationships with others beyond Jeff. Lucas is an OC and will continue to play a big part in the future, although hopefully not in the way that you would expect!
I'd love if those reading could review or PM me so feedback, I've written a lot over the last week, and would love some feedback on the recent chapters before posting so I could tweek them
As always, enjoy!
Nick's POV
They walked to the commons together, Trent speaking enough for both of them. Nick came to an abrupt stop as he heard voices flittering out through the door. It was Jeff's that caught his attention.
"I don't know, he seems fine one minute and then not the next. I don't know what to do, just breathing wrong sets him off and its not like he gets angry, he just retreats into himself and shuts everybody out and its impossible to get through to him"
Trent was looking nervously between Nick and the door, torn on what to do. Nick noticed him and pressed a finger to his lips indicating he should be quiet. He just nodded.
"Yeah but something is setting him off, there has to be, he wouldn't just change like that. Lucas was talking to him at dinner, and he had just come in for breakfast before Nicks freak out. Or maybes its food. Maybe he's anorexic. He freaked out about the food twice today, maybe he's trying to starve himself" It was Blaine speaking and Nick felt a pang of guilt for making his friends worry but a stronger pang of anger. Why did they think they had a right to talk about him like that?
"I noticed that too, but then why was he in the cafeteria earlier? At lunch? Why go somewhere your surrounded by food? Why not go to the library or his dorm where theres no temptation?" Nick could hear how frustrated David was getting, they were close and he could tell the way he was acting was upsetting the council member.
"Maybe its because of you two getting together. Maybe he feels unattractive or uncomfortable with how he looks. But he's already small, he probably barely has anything to lose and he's definitely not overweight."
"But he started acting like that before we got together, and even if he hadn't that still wouldn't explain why he got so mad at warbler practice or why he was in the cafeteria earlier. I think its Lucas. Nick hates attention and he's been just short of stalking him for nearly two months. And Lucas is exactly like the guys Nick left our old school to get away from, theres no way he'd confront him if he's making him uncomfortable."
"Yeah that sounds right" Sebastian's voice made a chill go down Nicks spine. They all thought he was weak. They all knew he was weak. They knew he couldn't stand up for himself and that he'd just run away like he always did. Even Sebastian, one of his only friends who didn't treat him like he was porcelain.
He felt sick and his head was spinning. He didn't know what to do, Trent was staring at him with concern on his face and Nick just felt like someone had picked him up and was spinning him around. He was going to barf, he knew it. He looked down the corridor towards his dorm, he could probably make it and save himself the embarrassment of being sick in a trash can in the commons in front of all his friends. All his friends who already thought he was weak. What would they think if they saw him get sick over something they had said.
He made a dash for the door, fishing his keys from his pocket as he went. Trent called after him and that must have alerted the others because soon he could hear other peoples feet after him, more then one set.
He knew Jeff had a key so there was no point in locking the door, he wouldn't be able to get into the bathroom though. He flung his door open, leaving it as he ran into the bathroom and fumbled with the lock, just getting on his knees quick enough for what little was in his stomach to come up. It was mostly just water and he was glad for that. It hadn't been too bad.
"Nick! Open the door! Let us in!" It was Jeff and that just made him gag more. He could hear the door being banged on, when he looked over his shoulder he could see that it was nearly breaking off the hinges from the force.
The pounding made his head worse and he started to retch more, his whole body shaking. There was nothing left to come up anymore and soon the retching stopped. Soon everything stopped. The retching, the banging, the shouts. Soon everything stopped until all he could hear was the ringing in his ears and soon that stopped too. Soon all he could see was black.
Trent POV
Trent stared in shock at where Nick had been standing before spinning around and calling him. The shorter boy was throwing himself down the hallway as fast as he could and all Trent could do was call after him.
"Nick!" He heard the door to the commons open behind him and that sprung him into action, he started running and before he had a chance to look back Jeff was running ahead of him with David, both of them much quicker then he was. He made it to Nicks dorm just as everybody else caught up with him and he stood there not knowing what do to.
Hunter moved past him as Jeff shouted "Nick! Open the door! Let us in!" His voice was desperate and Trent thought that maybe his words had a double meaning considering what he had said not 5 minutes ago.
Hunter and David were trying desperately to get the door of the bathroom open, Nick hadn't responded to them at all and the only noise coming from the bathroom was him vomiting. Trent knew he had nothing to vomit up so it couldn't last that much longer.
"I'm calling the nurse" Wes moved from the door into the room to make the call. Hunter, David and Jeff were still trying their hardest to get the door open and Trent could see it begin to splinter at the edges.
"Stop! If you break the door and he's on the floor he might get hurt" He hadn't realised that he had said that until he saw everybody looking at him. Cameron nodded.
"Maintenance! I'll call them" Cameron took his phone from his pocket, going to Jeff's shelf to get his handbook to get the number. The room became quiet and tense, nobody really having anything to say. He could see everybody scrambling for something. Thad went to the door and leaned against it, his forehead resting against the wood.
"Nick, buddy, just let us in okay? We just want to make sure your okay. We can talk about whatever's bothering you. Why you haven't been eating and whats causing all the panic attacks. If someones doing something we can help, we can make sure they can't do it again but to do that you have to help us. You have to tell us whats wrong and how to help you" He took a breath before continuing, everybody in the eerily quiet room giving him their full attention. "We're your friends Nick and were worried about you, Your acting like you did when you first joined the warblers" Trent flinched remembering Nick shrinking into himself at dinner when they were questioning him about eating. He hadn't done that in so long "We just want to make sure your alright. Can you let us in? So we can help you? You don't need to talk if you don't want and we wont push you but we need you to open the door. Or if you cant open it you need to let us know and move out of the way so we can knock the door down"
There was just silence when Thad finished.
"He isn't retching anymore" it was Sebastian, it took a few seconds for Trent to register what he was saying, Nick wasn't barfing anymore. He wasn't dry heaving. He wasn't making any noise.
The nurse rushed in then and Trent could see some of his friends visibly relax. She would take care of it now. Trent didn't have that much faith in her.
"Where is he?" She addressed Wes and he merely pointed to the door in response.
"Nick Duval?" Wes nodded. Thad and the other three moved from the door to give her some space
"Nick, honey, its Nurse Washington. Your friends said you aren't feeling well. Could you let me in so that I can make you feel better? I can give you something to help with the vomiting. It'll make you feel so much better but you have to unlock the door so I can make sure you haven't hurt yourself." She paused looking at the boys in the room warily before continuing
"Have you hurt yourself Nick? Nobodies going to be upset but if you've taken something or done something to yourself you need to tell me so that I can help make it better" Trent's eyes widened. She thought Nick was self harming or trying to kill himself. She thought that he had intentionally hurt himself.
She looked to the other boys. "Has he responded at all? Did any of you see him do anything to himself? Did you call someone to open the door?"
Trent answered "No, he was vomiting when we came in, but he stopped just before you came in. I don't think he did. He took off fairly quickly, so I think he just needed to vomit. Jeff was with him before dinner though." They turned to look at Jeff.
"I didn't see him do anything to himself and I was with him for the two hours before dinner and we called maintenance" She nodded and took the walkie talkie from her belt.
"Maintenance where are you? We have an unresponsive student locked in a bathroom"
"On our way, we should be there in a minute"
She turned back to them. "Is there anything else I need to know?" She gave them a pointed look, warning them not to lie to her.
"He hasn't really eaten since Thursday night, he had a bit of bread today but it made him feel sick"
"And he's been having panic attacks all day" She nodded as two men entered the room, tools in hand. They went straight to the door and began working on the lock. After a tense minute the door was pushed open to reveal Nick, lying curled in a ball passed out on the floor. He was covered in sweat and his face was completely slack. The nurse knelt down and checked his pulse.
"Call an ambulance. Nick honey can you hear me? If you can hear me squeeze my hand" She gripped his hand in hers but nothing happened. "Your okay, your gonna be fine sweetheart."
"They're on the way" Sebastian put his phone back into his pocket and asked what they were all thinking. "Would he really be this bad after just two days?"
She sighed. "It depends. I don't know whats wrong with him, but if he's been having panic attacks and vomiting thats probably what caused him to pass out. His body might just be exhausted, panic attacks take a lot of energy and if he hasn't been eating they could have easily made him pass out" She seemed to get distracted then, pushing his sleeves up. Trent gasped at the bruising there. Jeff coughed awkwardly.
"That was from last night" Oh Trent couldn't keep the surprised look off his face. Nick had wanted to be tied up his first time? That didn't seem like him. And how had he not noticed this morning when Nick was wearing a t-shirt? The nurse nodded, coming to the same conclusion as to what he meant. She sighed.
"I'm going to need you all to go to the hallway in a moment" She looked at Jeff "Are you his boyfriend?" He nodded "You can stay if you want, to come to the hospital. He'll probably want a friendly face when he wakes up. It might stop him going into another panic attack" Jeff nodded again and sirens in the distance alerted them to the oncoming ambulance.
They moved from the room to the hallway and then to the commons, not wanting to risk being in the way and wanting to give Nick some privacy. Trent couldn't wrap his head around the bruised wrists. Why would Nick want that? He knew he was a virgin, there was no way he wasn't, and he knew that Jeff wasn't. Maybe Nick had felt like he had to be adventurous because of that? Or maybe he just really trusted Jeff and did want to try something more then Trent would have expected from him.
Thad broke the silence "Do you think Jeff was lying about his wrists?" Trent looked at him curiously.
"Why would he do that?" Blaine didn't look convinced. But Trent could see where Thad was coming from. Jeff and Nick shared a lot of secrets with each other, things that he didn't think anybody else would ever know, maybe something had happened and Nick didn't want anybody to know so Jeff had said the first thing that came to his mind.
"Well if something happened it would explain his behaviour and come on, this is Nick were talking about, he's more sexless then Kurt, why would he go from that to kinky in a night? And if Nick asked Jeff to jump off a bridge he'd do it, he would 100% lie about the wrist thing if he thought he was helping. It just doesn't add up. He avoided everyone yesterday, and then him and Jeff got together and then he freaked at breakfast, avoided us all again and then suddenly he was fine? And now this? Something has to have set him off" Hunter nodded from the couch.
"I still think its Lucas. When he came in at breakfast Nick freaked out, and at dinner they spoke and then this happens? And Jeff went for him at football" Trent gasped. Jeff was so gentle, other then when he was on the field, theres no way he would lose his temper like that over nothing. "I've never seen him so angry or aggressive, I honestly thought he was going to try to kill him, Lucas said something, I don't know what, but it made Jeff lose it. Jeff never liked him but he never would have done that before now and then at dinner he was glaring at him, i don't think he even saw them talk but he still glared at him from across the room. He has to have done something to make him hate him. And he's been after Nick for months now, what if he did something to Nick?" Sebastian nodded
"That would make Jeff hate him and explain Nicks behaviour" They stopped talking as the paramedics rushed past the door and Trent bit his lip nervously. Maybe this wasn't the best time to talk about this. They could figure that all out tomorrow. After they knew their friend was okay.
The next few minutes were tense and silent as they tried to hear what was going on. They could hear muffled voices and then a door opened. Trent let out the breath he hadn't realised he was holding when he heard Nicks hoarse voice.
"I don't need to go to the hospital, I'm fine. I just need to eat" Someone tutted, Trent guessed the nurse.
"Just go to humour us okay? Its probably nothing but its better to be safe then sorry. If the medics think you need to get checked out its best to listen them." It was Jeff speaking and he seemed calm, Trent wasn't sure if he really was or was just doing it for Nicks benefit. Nick sighed in response.
"Fine, but I'm walking"
The nurse spoke next. "Are you sure you'll be able to? Why don't you at least let one of us help you if you wont get on the stretcher."
"I'm fine. I can walk by myself" Trent quickly closed the door knowing it wasn't fair on Nick for him to have an audience. No matter how badly he needed visual confirmation that his friend was okay.
