Chapter 21
Trunks knew that this night of camping would remain a precious memory in his mind. However, they had to get up very early the next day in order to leave Goten enough time to get changed at home before starting work.
As they entered the town and its morning traffic jam, Trunks had the sad feeling of a broken dream. The oppressive concrete all around them, the rumbling of the streets and the crowd scattered on the sidewalk were a gloomy assault to his senses.
Goten was so obsessed by his timing that he didn't seem to realize how ruthlessly reality had shattered the magic all of a sudden. After showering, he just rushed out the house upon staring nervously at his watch. Of course, he hadn't contemplated for a split second of having Trunks drive him to work. His caution was quite ridiculous, considering that almost everyone knew they were housemates. Nevertheless, Goten wanted to remain as unnoticed as possible. As he'd clearly explained to Trunks, the situation was fine enough to him, and he wasn't willing to take any risk for it to change.
So this game of hide-and-seek had to be resumed, nibbling gradually at Trunks' nerves.
Goten had considered Trunks was possessive, and he was maybe right in the end. Trunks'd often been called a spoiled child, and he knew himself that it wasn't entirely wrong. Everytime he'd wanted something, he'd always yearned to have it, and moreover, to have it quickly. It was hard for him to fight this side of himself.
Now, he wanted Goten so badly for himself and all the time, that he was becoming downright nervous and impatient. He was struggling to tame the frustration, and he was aware he had to suck it up. He had to take in account his friend's feeling and he tried to keep in mind what Goten had told him that night about his mother.
Chichi was certainly not like Bulma, and the relationship between Goten and his mother, was certainly not the same as the one between Trunks and his own.
While Trunks could feel an equal footing with Bulma, Goten was always under Chichi's authority. She was the only one knowing, deciding and leading. In her eyes, Goten was still a scatter-brained kid who needed her to understand the world around him.
She was definitely unable to see her son as an adult capable of making his own choices. What choices indeed ? Since birth, she had planned his route to arrive safe and sound. And "safe and sound" was meaning a good job, a good wife, and lots of children. Chichi didn't know any other happy ending for a man. She didn't even suspect that it could exist any other aims in a man's life. It wasn't really a lack of goodwilling from her and there was no malevolence in her mind, either; she was just deeply convinced that the scheme was necessarily the same for all.
Thinking back to the way she chose her husband and the way she'd always refused to acknowledge that her flight plan had never made him happy, Trunks had to admit that Chichi was not the type to question her belief. Whatever could happen, and no matter how painfully life had demonstrated her mistakes, she never pulled off the road she believed to be the right one, the one that leads to happiness and fulfillment.
On this basis, Trunks grasped easily why Goten was so scared to announce to her that he had decided to experience another path. It would have ruthlessly ruined all her hopes, and it was highly unlikely that she would suddenly start to consider her son's choice as anything but a terrible mistake. Even if his life with Trunks made Goten happy, it would be doubtlessly a crushing disappointment for Chichi.
However, Chichi wasn't the sole issue. In addition, Goten would have other consequences to face, and Trunks hadn't realized their whole scale in the first place. Goten's situation was different from his. Trunks was living in a world where most people obeyed him, or at least respected him enough to avoid meddling in his personal life. Goten's surroundings weren't so soft, and the brawl in the canteen with this Kawitz was a perfect illustration of what Goten's life could be. Goten would not only have to confess he had a boyfriend, but he would have furthermore to assume to be his boyfriend.
In the end, making their relationship official would demand obviously many more sacrifices to Goten than to Trunks. That was why Trunks had to calm down and to be patient and understanding.
As he was innerly drawing this conclusion for the thousandth time, sitting quietly in his office, he realized he'd been reading the same paper for ten minutes, without printing a single word in his brain. He rubbed his eyelids and looked down at the clock next to his desk pad. Already 10:00 pm. He gathered the documents lying on the desk and stood up to join a crisis meeting about a topic he'd already forgotten. Once again, his working night promised to be long. Long and sad.
Goten swore as he burnt himself with the popcorn's package he'd just taken out from the microwave. He cursed himself for continually repeating the same silly mistakes. He turned on the tap and let some cold water run over his wounded hand. He contemplated sadly the corn scattered on the kitchen floor. No popcorn tonight. And he would have to clean it up. He cut off the water with a sharp movement and dried his hand absently. His eyes fell on Trunks' childhood picture, that was still taped on his supposed closet's door.
Trunks had sent a text message to tell he had to attend an unplanned meeting. Don't wait for me. In fact, tonight, it was exactly what Goten felt like doing. It was Friday, after all.
Each time Trunks had to work late, Goten couldn't help but to stay at home, with the frantic hope that his friend would by magic eventually show up earlier than foreseen. It had indeed occured once or twice since the CEO's schedule was downright unpredictable. However, most of the time, Goten's hopeful expectation ended up falling asleep on the couch upon watching television.
Yet Trunks had never asked him to stay quietly home. He knew Goten to be a real partygoer and Trunks would never mind if Goten went out alone. Trunks could be possessive but he would never prevent Goten from doing whatever he wanted. On this point, their relationship was quite different than the one Goten had with Valese or any other girl he'd dated.
Goten sighed. Tomorrow was Saturday, he would anyway likely spend the whole day with Trunks. And it had been so long since the last time Goten had gone out. It was stupid. He liked it, and as summer was beginning, the bars were more crowded. Goten pondered about going to the rotten bar on the channel's banks. The barkeeper was nice and Goten knew some of the regular customers there, he would easily find some funny company for a drink. Nevertheless, he remained hesitant about this idea.
He was throwing the popcorn in the trash when suddenly the doorbell rang in the silent house. Goten needed some time to realize it was his doorbell. The bell echoed again before he reached the door. He was wondering a bit warily who could visit him so late in the evening. His stomach clenched as he found a smiling Alice on the threshold. Goten's eyes widened, and he swifted instinctively to stand across the doorway and prevent her from coming in.
- Alice? he exlcaimed in disbelief.
He glanced outside as if he could find the explanation of her presence in the garden, as if she had maybe stopped at the wrong address.
- Goten! She replied mimicking comically his stunned expression.
- What are you doing here? How did you get my address?
- Huh, maybe I'll tell you some day ... Won't you let me in? she asked, handing him a bottle of wine.
He grabbed the bottle by reflex, but hesitated immediately. In fact, he wasn't willing to let her in, he knew exactly why she was there and he knew allowing her to come in would end up having him in an embarassing situation.
- I can't, I was just about to go out, he replied finally.
She frowned, eyeing him with disappointment.
- And where were you planning to go? she asked.
He hadn't expected her to ask this question. A normal girl would have said too bad, and she would have left as suddenly as she'd showed up. Nevertheless, Alice was definitely not a normal girl.
Anyone else than Goten would have replied that it was none of her business, or would have made up a story in order to prevent her insistence. However, Goten had never been chatted up in such a pushy way and he didn't feel endangered, in any way.
- I haven't decided, yet. I wanted to go have a drink somewhere, he explained candidly.
- Pitch perfect! Come with me, I'll take you to my bar. You'll like it, I'm sure! She exclaimed with an enthusiastic beam.
He rubbed the back of his head and mulled for a moment over her offer. He was alone anyway and nobody was waiting for him anywhere. Moreover, he loved to discover new places to party. The idea sounded pretty good to him.
- Why not? Wait for me a minute, he eventually answered.
Goten grabbed his jacket and followed her.
He wasn't even tense. Goten was very social. He liked to go out and meet lots of people, and Alice was some funny company. An evening with her would be a brighter prospect than falling asleep during a movie without popcorn.
She had a beautiful car, a great luxury coupé. Goten's eyes drifted down its design. He pointed out innerly that she was very much like Trunks on some point. Even her risky driving didn't impress him much since he was used to Trunks'. Her nervous and reckless way to handle the wheel and to speed up carelessly didn't stir him up the least and he merely fastened cautiously his seat belt.
He was considering with some amusement Alice's nerve, to come and get him at home although he had never called her back, nor tried to see her again, even in that bar where she'd invited him more than two weeks ago.
He slipped a cigarette at the corner of his mouth and gave her a sideway glance. She was definitely a pretty girl. Her beauty wasn't quite obvious at first sight, but her mischievous feline features had some special fascinating charm. Why a girl like her would decide to cling to him the way she did, especially considering that he had clearly explained he wasn't interested in her? Since she was pretty much like Trunks in some ways, Goten concluded that, maybe, just like his friend, she had a strong liking for a challenge. She's a hunter. Goten smiled. He was anything but prey.
- Seriously, how did you get my address, Alice? he asked once more, before lighting his cigarette.
She smirked, her eyes still on the road ahead.
- It wasn't really hard. You know I'm working with the guys in the Capsule's financial department lately. I see them almost every day... Thanks to that bitchy Trunks, by the way.
- So what? I know none of them, how could they give you my address? Goten objected.
- They didn't, but they told me you were Trunks' housemate ...
Goten bit his tongue. He wondered if Alice had also heard rumors about them. Maybe she suspected they were lovers, and she'd decided to seduce him to piss Trunks off. It could be logical since it seemed to be their favourite game.
- … And it was quite easy for me to track down Trunks' place, Alice ended.
She giggled.
- He would be so mad to know that I use what I know about him to invite you out, she added with a delighted face.
- Why do you say that? Goten asked with bated breath.
- Because, he can't stand when people are interested in someone other than him, of course … Anyway, do we have to talk about him? He pisses me off so much these days ...
Goten opened his window to clear the smoke of his cigarette. He understood that Alice wasn't suspecting anything and relaxed slightly. If she'd heard rumors, it was obvious she'd swept them aside with a shrug. After all, she had been Trunks' girlfriend, and the idea of a relationship between Goten and him should sound as surreal to her as to Goten himself at the very beginning.
She parked in front of a giant bar, along a road, just outside the city. Goten had never been in this place. He peered at the cubic one-storey building. It was floodlit by multicolored spotlights and standing in the middle of a loosy neighborhood where people didn't seem to be fussy about the noise.
The sound of a rhythmic music was echoing way up to the sky, and small groups of people were walking loudly towards the entrance. Most of the girls were wildly sexy and Goten suspected that some of them had to be professional escort girls. In the parking lot, the cars were displaying surprisingly mixed standings, from top-end models, like Alice's, to patched students' bangers.
- You like it? My brother owns this place, Alice announced by lighting a cigarette.
He gave her a surprised glance. He wouldn't have thought that a girl like Alice could have connections with some shady bartender. It was a job quite different from hers.
She smiled mischievously and rested her hand on his waist to push him forward to the entrance. She cleared ruthlessly their path through the squash and one of the entrance's security guards came to help them finally reach the door.
Goten was jostled by the crowd and if it weren't for Alice's slight hand on his hip, he would have drowned in the mass. When they passed the doorstep, he was stunned by the very high sound level. However, he was relieved to discover that there was much more space inside.
The bar was downright huge, and the customers tightly stuck outside, scattered immediately, as soon as they were inside. Alice guided Goten to the counter and left him alone for a while.
He peered at the place around him. On one side of the room, there was a very large dancefloor that was rather deserted for the moment, while, on the other side, tables had been gathered to welcome the drinkers. Waitresses in sexy outfits were walking skillfully among the careless customers.
One of the waitresses walked up to Alice, who had a word in her ear. The waitress nodded, and Alice motioned to Goten to follow her. He was gradually getting used to the noise, but still found it too loud. He was indeed considering that he might end the night by turning deaf. He obediently stepped behind Alice but, since he didn't dare to bump too frontally into people around him, he was eventually ruthlessly pushed backwards. Alice had to grasp firmly his hand to drag him strongly behind her. He felt a bit confused about brutally hurting some other customers in the movement, but he realized ultimately that it seemed to be an accepted rule.
She led him straight to the back of the room, to a staircase he hadn't noticed. She walked up the stairs, making sure to stay ahead of him. That way, he was given the opportunity to watch up her long legs, tighted up in a slightly shiny fabric.
Upstairs, Goten was a bit surprised to find out the place was quite different from the ground floor. The music was much less aggressive and first of all, much less loud. Tables were arranged in boxed area that allowed more tranquility and privacy. The decor was also more sophisticated with soft lighting.
- We'll be cosy here, Alice annouced.
Goten nodded in approval and followed her to a table. She stubbed out her cigarette, she'd held the whole time skillfully between her fingers, and they sat opposite of each other.
- You've never been here? she asked with a beam.
- Never ... It's huge and great.
- It is. But let's drink!
At that moment, as if she had been waiting for this signal, a friendly smiling waitress came and stood in front of them. She was wearing a scandalously ultra-short silk dress and a stylized apron, which obvious function wasn't to protect her from any stain, but rather to have the drinkers call her as many times as needed to clear their wallets. Goten couldn't prevent his eye from dwelling on her. He had to admit that he was beginning to like this place very much.
- What will you have? Alice asked.
- Uh ... Well, I dunno right now,
- Let me order it for you. Hmm ... Linn, get us two « screaming orgasms », please.
Goten raised his eyebrows.
- It's a cocktail's name, you'll love it, Alice added mischievously.
Goten stared with hesitation at the waitress but she was quietly scribbling the order on her memo pad. She merely gave him a nod and left in a hurry.
- You never give up the fight, do you? Goten finally asked with amusement when he was alone with Alice again.
- Never. Especially when I know I'm right ... she retorted, looking him straight in the eyes.
- You think you're right to cling to me like you do? Alice ...
Goten sighed deeply.
- I told you I already have someone, he resumed quietly.
- Did you? Well ... I don't know who that lucky girl is supposed to be but... I know she's not here right now ... And indeed, I was wondering if she was anywhere to be seen. To be honest, I doubt she exists.
Goten was taken aback by the nerve of that girl. He leaned his cheek against his hand, seemingly interested by her odd theory.
- And what makes you think she doesn't exist? he asked.
He was interrupted by the waitress who carefully put two cocktails on the table along with some appetizers. Alice eyed her every move and waited for her to disappear. Then, she mixed slowly her cocktail and looked up back to Goten.
- I know you were engaged with Valese, she announced.
- We weren't engaged! Goten objected strongly.
He bit his lip and frowned in embarrassment. Hearing Alice talking about Valese sounded almost indecent to him. He took absently several sips of his drink. He was a bit surprised by the taste and rested his glass down on the table with a slight wince.
- Damn ! You've got a nerve, he resumed upon wiping his mouth, you got my address to show up uninvited at my house and in addition to that, you investigated about my life. I have to say the way you act is something ...
- Unique, Alice cut off by grabbing his wrist.
She was smiling again, and seemed to be glad from his reaction about Valese. He realized that she had been testing him. He'd left Valese more than six months ago now and he had to admit that he'd done everything to forget this inglorious affair. Hearing about Valese so unexpectingly had made him instinctively upset. And that was what Alice wanted to know. She'd wanted to know how he was feeling about his former « fiancée ».
- Hey, don't be pissed, let's forget about that. We're here to have fun after all, she said with a soothing voice.
Goten gently removed his wrist from her grip.
- Have fun, he repeated, emphasizing each word.
- Have fun. Alice confirmed.
In Goten's spirit, of course, having fun meant drinking. He was so confident in his ability to hold alcohol, and Alice was so tiny, she could never keep up with his pace of drinking. His evening with Alice wouldn't have any consequence anyway. What he basically wanted was to have fun, Trunks had said it himself, Goten needed a little fun.
Alice had confessed to Trunks that Goten made her laugh and Goten would willingly acknowledge that it was mutual. And above all, having drinks with her in this bar was much more exciting than falling asleep by watching TV.
At about one o'clock, Goten squinted at his watch and remembered Trunks. He was likely back from work by now. However, Goten knew his friend wouldn't worry and wouldn't search for him. They would have the whole day for themselves the next day.
As the night passed by, the other clients around them began to give up their inhibitions, and several times, guys showed up at their tables to try to convince Alice to dance with them. Goten carefully refrained from ruining their attempts since he considered it was much funnier to watch Alice's struggle to get rid of those clingy suitors. He was at this stage of intoxication, where almost everything, made him laugh. Alice wasn't really sober either, and was no longer able to gather her thoughts enough to build proper sentences. So, she was merely biting the guy's head off with an unusual vulgarity that had Goten burst out laughing each time.
As the fourth guy was walking away with disappointment, Alice suddenly stood up. She was a bit unsteady on her feet but walked cautiously around the table to join Goten and sit on the bench seat next to him.
- What the hell are you doing? he asked with a faint distrust.
He swifted a little toward the wall on his right, while Alice was taking place on his left.
- These guys definitely suck ... I was thinking, if I sit here right next to you, they'll believe we're dating and they'll leave me alone.
- Is that really what you had in mind? Goten mumbled, moving a bit more to the wall.
- Trust me…I know what I'm doing, she replied with a hoarsed shaky voice.
However, the bench seemed incredibly small to Goten. It was meant for two people, but Alice was still very close to him. Too close. He could perceive the warmth of her body, despite the desperate effort from his foggy mind to avoid any contact with her.
He'd just finished his glass and, as always, the waitress brought a new one without waiting for Goten to ask anything. She gathered hastily the many empty glasses on their table, and Goten couldn't help but to glance again at her sensual curves under the silk of her dress. He forced himself to look away and mechanically took a few sips of whatever she had brought to him.
- So? Why don't you tell me the truth about your mysterious girlfriend ... She doesn't exist indeed, does she? Alice whispered huskily.
He realized that she was now close enough to speak in his ear. He could feel her light breathe on his skin and she had placed a shy hand on his thigh. He turned to her, to face her and try to have a little more space in order to move back further to the wall and away from her.
- It ... It's complicated, he stammered, suddenly confused by his lies.
- I know. It's always complicated, she said in a falsely understanding tone.
She came slightly even closer and he felt her touch pressing gently his leg. Goten was cornered, now struggling miserably to keep control. However, a disturbing heat in his body was arising an urge to touch her in return. Alice's feline eyes seemed suddenly amazingly clear, while a minute ago, they were still troubled by alcohol.
- I am a simple girl. You can trust me, she whispered again, her lips incredibly close.
Her body brushed Goten's as she leaned closer to him. He shivered. Because of Trunks' crazy schedules, Goten had no sexual activities for the last four days, and it was breaking his usual pace. Goten's body was already reacting to the great opportunity Alice was offering.
The young man was feeling the effects of alcohol that was mixing his thougts and his clear-sightedness seemed to get dispelled a little more in the throbbing music and the humming of the crowd. When her lips reached his, he had a start and raised instinctively his hand to place it on her shoulder. However, when he felt her warm, wet tongue entering his mouth, he couldn't remember if he'd intended to push her away or drag her closer. So, he mereley remained motionless, allowing her to deepen her kiss as much as she wanted. His tongue was absently replying to hers and Goten felt like floating in some strange state of hypnosis.
She kissed him languidly and leaned further to press him down with all her body's weight until he was half-lying on the seat bench. She slid slowly her hand under the fabric of his shirt and he was amazed by the gentleness of her moves. He realized at that moment that he was seriously aroused already. This awareness snapped something in his mind and he suddenly broke the kiss.
- Wait… Wait… Bad idea, he stammered upon trying pathetically to sit up.
- Don't speak, just let it go, she replied softly.
She ran her hand down to his swollen fly. Goten didn't see it coming and gasped in surprise. She took advantage of this moment to resume their kiss.
Goten didn't know what to do and things were getting more and more out of his hands as she was still rubbing gently his groin through his pants. He tried to claw his hand at the edge of the table, to have some support to get up. However, she was skillfully blocking his every movement and grasped his hand to have him let go of the table.
His misty will was faltering, as his pants were squeezing his crotch a little more. Her warmth and her touch were increasingly intoxicating. As his objections were dying out one by one in his dull mind, he suddenly felt Alice's body moving away from his.
Their kiss was broken, her lips living some wet trails on his. He blinked and realized she had been lifted up and pulled away abruptly from the bench seat. Goten sat up with difficulty and found out that Trunks had seized her by the collar and hurled her back away from the table.
Alice had a short cry both of panic and surprise as her feet left the ground and she landed in the customer's crowd. Fortunately, some of them caught her up instinctively and she avoided becoming seriously hurt.
Despite his drunkenness, Goten could perceive Trunks' anger. However, the numbness of his brain prevented Goten from getting worried about his friend's rage. He was indeed scarcely feeling a pang of guilt, but was unable to explain it.
He casually wiped his mouth from Alice's kiss and wondered what Trunks was doing there. It was surely time to go. However, Trunks didn't seem to care for him. He was staring at Alice. She'd stood up and was screaming furiously.
- Are you fucking nuts? You, lunatic! she yelled.
- Stay away from him, Trunks growled with a deep, threatening voice.
He turned to Goten and grabbed him by the arm to help him get up from the seat. The vertical position appeared immediately to be complicated for Goten, and Trunks had to hold him firmly.
- Hey, how was work? Goten asked.
Somewhere in the back of his brain, a voice was screaming that he'd picked up the wrong sentence. It wasn't what he was supposed to say right now, but he could hardly understand what was going on actually. Nevertheless, it wasn't very important because Trunks had focused back on Alice. She'd gripped Goten's free arm and was yelling again.
- Let him go! Who the fuck do you think you are, Trunks? You're not the damn boss, here! You definitely suck!
Trunks caught her wrist in a blink to force her to let go of Goten, but she tried to push Trunks back. She was clearly as infuriated as him.
- Goten! Tell him! Fuck, Trunks! You freaky bastard! We're both grown-up! You have no right to… Alice screamed on a hysterical tone.
- I told you to leave him alone, Trunks hissed a last time as he was painfully struggling to contain his growing rage.
At that moment, he was displaying incredible efforts to restrain himself from breaking her wrist. The mere fact that she dared to call upon Goten's free will, after having him drink God knows what, in this disreputable place Trunks knew by heart, infuriated him even more.
- You're hurting me! she finally shouted before snapping her wrist from his grip.
Trunks squinted slightly on the black trails his fingers had printed on her milky skin and this sight managed to cool down some of his anger. He felt hands gripping his shoulders from behind.
- Kick him out of here! Alice shouted to the security guards, that had suddenly showed up behind Trunks.
They tried to seize the heir. Alice was rubbing her sore wrist and glaring at him with hate. Trunks decided it was better to let the guards drag him out. He didn't want to risk losing control, and go into a lethal fight with them. However, he grabbed Goten's shirt to force him to follow their movement. Seeing this caused Alice to hold on to her guest again by grasping his arm.
The other customers were standing cautiously apart and peering at the show with astonishment. Goten felt like a bone torn between two dogs. He was pitifully struggling to keep his balance and to gather his wits. Aside from the music, everyone was silent, and Alice's words were the only ones echoing in the room.
- Leave him alone, Briefs! I swear, I will tell them to beat you to a pulp! she roared.
Trunks finally lost his patience, he pulled away brutally from the guard's grip and kicked them out effortlessly. Frantic whispers arose in the crowd and Alice stiffened at the sight. She dropped Goten instantly and he almost fell flat on his face in surprise. Trunks caught hold of him and allowed him to stand straight upon resting his friend's arm over his own shoulder.
- Shit ... What the hell do you want, Trunks? What the fuck do you expect? Damn, we broke up more than a year ago, Alice stammered with some fear in her voice.
She was still rubbing gently her wrist and took one step back with mistrust.
- I didn't come to get you, idiot ! Trunks replied harshly, I came for him.
Alice frowned in disbelief. Her skeptical eyes drifted from Trunks to Goten. Trunks slipped his hand on Goten's neck and drew him closer. In the midst of this unexplainable and noisy reality, Goten's numb mind felt instinctively comforted by Trunks' touch and scent. Goten's forehead dropped on his friend's shoulder with an obvious tiredness.
- What are you trying to tell me? Alice hissed suspiciously.
- He is my boyfriend, see what I mean? We fuck together, Trunks clarified.
He'd used explicit words on purpose as if to slap her face once and for all.
Alice's ajar mouth closed in one move and she gulped. She stared at Goten with the hope of a denial, but he was blankly looking back at her, as if he wasn't really concerned by the discussion.
At this very instant, she suddenly realized that he'd told her he had someone. He'd never said it was a girl. He'd said it was complicated but she hadn't understood. Still, she thought she had an unerring instinct for these kind of things, and she remembered Goten's arousal when she touched him, she remembered him glancing at the waitresses with shiny eyes. And Trunks ... Damn, she knew him too well.
She was taken completely aback but Trunks looked so serious and self-confident. He couldn't be joking.
- Trunks, I think… I have to go out very quickly, Goten mumbled.
- Fortunately, Chibi, that's exactly what we're going to do right now, Trunks replied.
They turned their back to a still stunned Alice, and Trunks guided Goten back to the exit. Everyone looked at them with a silent amazement and departed carefully from their path.
