Peter took Walter and Olivia to get a strawberry milkshake. For now they would let Homeland Security and the FBI handle things at the lab. He knew that Walter would be required at the lab soon, though. Broyles had told him as much when he called on their drive to the diner. Apparently they wanted the body to remain in Walter's lab and the Jeffersonian team would arrive shortly to help with the case. They were just waiting for the forensic team to bag and tag evidence that could be related to the crime, before he took Walter back to the lab.
Seeing all of the dead clones of Olivia was really starting to cut him deep down. He wondered how long this would continue before something happened to his Olivia. He may have made it seem like leaving the lab was to get Olivia away from having to look at a dismembered version of herself glued to the wall, but Peter knew the truth. It had shocked him to the core as well. It was all he could do to keep from vomiting all over the scene. Peter was by no means squeamish, but when a person sees the face of someone they love like that, it has a way of really cutting them deep. All the way to the bone. Peter shivered involuntarily and sighed as he ran a hand through his hair and exited the car. He glanced at Olivia as they walked into the diner. Her eyes looked so far away. He could only imagine what she was going through. Having no memory of her life had to be rough, then to factor in seeing herself dead and dismembered had to be one hell of a bomb shell dropped on her mind.
Peter found himself looking her direction more often than not. He was worried about her. She hadn't said a word since they left Harvard. Even when they ordered she said nothing, she only nodded when she was asked if she wanted a strawberry milkshake. She mostly kept her eyes downcast, she wouldn't directly look at Peter or Walter. Peter's heart broke a little watching her avoid them. He wanted more than anything to reach over and pull her into his arms, but he was afraid of how she would react given the current circumstances.
Walter started rambling on about his latest attempt at creating the perfect strawberry milkshake. Peter was only half listening. He was more worried about the woman sitting beside him.
While the waitress set down their shakes, Peter leaned towards Olivia and took her hand in his. "Look at me, Olivia," he whispered.
Slowly she turned her head and raised her eyes to meet his, but she didn't say anything.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" He asked pleadingly. The pain in her eyes spoke volumes.
Finally she spoke. "Not unless you have a magic wand that will give me back my memories and make me forget what I just saw." She wanted look away form Peter, but the intensity of his gaze made her powerless to move. She could see and feel the depth of his feelings for her. It was almost palpable. She didn't remember him, but it was like her subconscious involuntarily remembered her feelings for him. She didn't know why she felt the way she did, only that the feelings were present. She wanted to reach out and grab him and pull herself into his chest to forget about everything that was happening. How can you love someone you don't remember even knowing? Her gut instincts told her she could trust this man with her life, but could she trust him with her fragile heart? She felt so alone in her current predicament. Unable to remember even her own family. She had no one to talk to which had added to her depression.
Peter stroked small circles on the palm of her hand with his thumb, hoping it would help comfort her. "If only I did. I would fix it all in an instant, Olivia."
She believed him. There was something about him that made her feel like everything would be okay. She didn't know how or why, but she believed that he would do anything if it meant taking away her pain. It was kind of endearing knowing this man that, in her mind she barely knew, would do anything for her. "Thank you for trying, though."
He offered her a small, warm smile and took a sip of the shake that had appeared before him while he wasn't paying attention.
That was all it had taken. A small gesture of kindness and love and she was feeling just a little bit better. She offered him a small, uncertain smile.
The three of them sat in companionable silence and finished their shakes before they had to return to the lab. None of them were looking forward to going back. Especially Peter, because he wasn't sure he could look at anymore dead Olivias without losing his goddamn mind.
Across the street, just slightly out of view, was a man. He narrowed his eyes at the trio in the diner sipping on strawberry milkshakes. A storm loomed overhead. Gigantic, dark gray storm clouds amassed above the city, opening up. The streets quickly filled with water as the rain turned to sleet. The man didn't move. The rain was just a minor nuisance, the real problem was the trio people he was watching inside the diner.
He wasn't sure how Olivia had managed to escape and kill her captor, but it wouldn't be long before that was remedied. In order for his plan to succeed, she had to die, the man was sure of it. Getting Peter to cooperate while she was still alive, would be impossible. He was pleased that the memory serum worked. It had never been tested before, so this came as a happy surprise to him. If Olivia still had her memories of her abduction, it would really throw a wrench into the gears of his plan. What he didn't know was how long he had until the effects of the memory serum wore off.
He would have to act soon.
