Chapter 21: Farewell
(Scarlett's POV)
I slowly woke up to someone talking. I could make out Alec's voice as well as Didyme's voice. I couldn't tell what they were talking about though because they were speaking in Latin. I opened my eyes and sat up a little.
"Oh you woke her up Alec." Didyme said walking over to me and Alec huffed then rolled his eyes.
"Where's Demetri?" I asked wondering what time it was, "and what time is it?"
"Five in the morning." Alec replied while leaning against the wall. I thought Marcus was going to get me when they all got back; and where is Demetri?
"Where is Demetri?" I asked again, but didn't get an answer right away. I was about to ask again, but Alec picked me up bridal style and started to walk out of the room.
"Come and visit us again dear Scarlett." Didyme said giving me a smile, but her eyes held worry. What's going on? Alec was half way down the hall to Demetri's room when I started to struggle in his hold.
"Stop moving." He hissed.
"Where's Demetri?" I demanded, "what's going on Alec? Put me down and give me an answer!"
"Demetri is in the infirmary." Alec responded flatly his eyes held nothing but worry.
"W-What happened?" I asked.
"A wolf hurt him badly and he's unconscious now."
"Vampires can lose consciousness?" I asked dumbfounded.
"Children of the moon have poison in their teeth that can render vampires unconsciousness."
"But he'll be alright though," I said worried, "right?" Alec didn't respond and I started to panic.
"Put me down Alec!" I said again struggling in his hold, "I want to see Demetri."
"You'll only be in the way." He hissed his hold on me tightening.
"I don't care I want to see him."
"He's unconscious," Alec growled, "stop being a pain."
"Please Alec." I begged as he walked into Demetri's room. Alec set me on the bed and huffed.
"I will ask Aro," he said, "now go back to bed." With that he left and I just sat there looking at the door. How am I supposed to sleep now?
I sat on the window ledge watching the sun come up. Alec has been gone for two hours now and my worries only increased. After Alec left I dressed into some pajamas and wondered around the room until I calmed down a little and sat down. Finally the door opened and Alec walked back in.
"Come on." He said grabbing my arm and dragging me out of the room. He took me to the kitchen where my breakfast was waiting for me.
"Can I see Demetri?" I asked taking a seat.
"Just eat." He responded and because of his tone, I decided not to argue. After eating, Alec led me down several halls to a large room at the end of the castle. Alec opened the large doors and I walked in to see a large room that was an infirmary. At the very end I could see Felix's back as he stood by a bed talking to Aro, Marcus, and Caius.
Alec grabbed my hand and walked me over to the bed. Demetri was laying on the bed. I noticed large tears in his jacket and shirt. He looked like he was sleeping; the only thing was that he wasn't breathing. I became very worried when he looked paler than normal if that was even possible.
"We will continue this conversation in my office." Aro said noticing me and Alec. As Aro walked by me, I grabbed his hand and he smiled at me.
"He will be fine dear," Aro said patting me on the shoulders, "we just don't know how long he will be unconscious." I nodded and watched him walk out. Felix had moved a two cushion couch by the bed so I could sit down.
"Are you ok Felix?" I asked noticing the tears in his jacket as well; he sighed.
"My best friend got hurt because of me," he replied, "I'm just really mad at myself for being so stupid." He sat down next to me on the couch and glared at the floor.
"God Demetri is an idiot." He muttered.
"What happened?" I asked a little hesitantly and Felix sighed.
"I was just being over confident and thought I could fight off two of the wolves at once. One of the wolves tried to attack me when I wasn't looking and Demetri go in the way; the idiot." I bit my lip and looked at Demetri again.
"I'm sure if your positions were switched then Demetri would be saying the same thing about you." I finally said and Felix let out a small laugh.
"You have no idea how right you are." He replied and stood up.
"I have to go now," he said, "will you stay here?"
"Of course." I replied with a smile. He nodded then walked away only to stop and look at me again.
"Hay Scarlett," he said making me look at him, "I'm glad Demetri has you looking after him." With that he walked away and I started blankly at the doors.
After Felix left I sat on the couch just watching Demetri. I stood up a little and inspected his torn clothing and my eyes landed on deep scratched in his arms. I bit my lip and sat back down and looked out the window.
"Here's your lunch." Gianna said handing me a bowl of Mack and Cheese.
"Gianna," I said before she left, "do you have a sewing kit?"
"Yes just give me a few minutes and I'll get it for you." I thanked her and she left only to return a few minutes later with a large sewing kit. After eating I grabbed Demetri's jacked which was at the end of the bed and inspected the tears in it.
"I'm glad I took a sewing class." I muttered and begun to stitch up his favorite grey coat. It took me several hours to stitch up his coat and when I finished I breath out feeling exhausted.
"You have more than one talent don't you?" Aro said appearing by me.
"Oh you scared me." I said after jumping in surprise.
"My apologizes." He smiled and sat by me.
"How long will Demetri be like this?" I asked and he sighed.
"We don't know." He admitted, "It could be a couple days, but it could be a couple months. We just don't know." I sighed and nodded. After talking to Aro about my time with the wives, he left and I lay down on the couch. I was half asleep when I felt a blanked being put on me. I opened my eyes just in time to see Caius leaving the room. I smiled and fell into a deep sleep.
"Finished!" I cheered quietly as I sat on the couch like always. It's been four days since Demetri has been in here and I decided to continue my research papers as I waited for him to wake up. I stretched after I sent my completed papers to my professors and flopped down onto the couch.
"God I'm glad that's over with." I said to the ceiling. I looked over when the door opened to see Jane walking in.
"Oh hello again Jane." I smiled and she nodded giving me the same look her brother always gives me. During the past four days, Jane has been coming here to check on Demetri and we slowly started to become friends. She was very hard to talk to at first, but after a while she opened up to me little by little. I learned though that Jane just likes to listen and not talk. She really only speaks when it's necessary.
"If you continue to talk to yourself people are going to think that you've gone insane." She said while leaning against the couch.
"Well I think I have gone insane with not being able to leave this place," I replied, "talking to the ceiling has become my only form of entertainment."
"You must really care about Demetri seeing as you haven't left this place since he got here." She said looking between me and Demetri.
"I-I" Was all I could say to that. I honestly don't know what to think anymore about my feelings. I mean I don't hate him anymore. In fact it's been a long time since I stopped hating him.
"You're zoning out again." Jane said in her annoyed tone.
"Oops sorry." I replied with a guilty smile. She rolled her eyes and we fell into silence. I felt my face get red when my stomach growled loudly.
"I guess I forgot to eat." I muttered.
"Stupid human." Jane muttered with a hint of amusement in her tone and I laughed.
"Hay," Jane said after a minute, "I can take you out to eat."
"Really?!" I asked feeling very excited and she shrugged.
"Don't make me change my mind." She said and I smiled then followed her out of the room and to the garage.
"This is a cute restaurant." I said as we walked into a small restaurant at the edge of Volterra. It was in a small old looking house that was turned into a restaurant.
"Yes." Jane replied as we were seated at a booth.
"The waiter brought my food and I was amazed at how good it was."
"Ciao Jane." I looked over to see an old woman walking over to the table. I was shocked when Jane smiled warmly at the woman as she stopped by the table.
"Ciao Annette," Jane smiled. The woman smiled and they had a long conversation in Italian as I ate and watched. After a while the lady left and I looked at Jane.
"Who was she?" I asked and Jane shrugged.
"She's the owner of this place." Jane replied and paused for a few minutes, "this house was built in the 1800s. I fell in love with it, but Aro didn't want to buy it because we have to keep a low profile." She paused again before continuing.
"About five years ago the city started making plans to tear down this house and build a shopping mall. It really upset me. One day I came to the house and met Annette who was living here alone because her husband passed away about ten years ago. She told me that the city was going to kick her out because she couldn't pay for the house anymore. She told me that it was her dream to open a restaurant and run it, but since she was low on money she wouldn't be able to make that dream possible. I told her that she should turn the first level of the house into a restaurant. I got permission from Aro to invest in the restaurant and we've been friends ever since. She's a very kind person and the only human I care for."
"That's nice." I replied and watched Annette talk to other customers. After I finished eating we returned to the castle only to be greeted by Alec.
"Demetri is awake." He said and I quickly followed him to the infirmary. Aro, Marcus, Caius, Felix, and the wives were there already talking to Demetri. I stood in the back of the group as everyone talked to him. Felix must have called him an idiot about fifty times before walking out with a relieved smile. Jane and Alec left too after a while and were followed by Marcus, Caius, and Aro.
"Oh there she is." Didyme smiled at me and pulled me over to the bed. Demetri's eyes met mine. His eyes were pitch black and he looked very tired.
"She's a lovely girl Demetri." Sulpicia said and the other two agreed while I looked down in embarrassment.
"She is." Demetri said softly in a very low tone. The wives left after a few more minutes and I just stood there not knowing what to do.
"Are you alright?" I finally asked and he smiled a little.
"I'll live." He muttered.
"Well technically you're already dead." I said and he laughed.
"True." He replied. I was about to move closer to him, but he stopped me.
"Please keep your distance," he said, "I am too thirsty to be near you."
"Sorry." I said and stepped away.
"Thank you." He said and I looked at him confused.
"For what?" I asked.
"For stitching up my jacket." He replied with a small smile.
"Oh," I replied, "you're welcome."
"And for staying by me." He said lowly after a few minutes of silence.
"I didn't want you to be alone." I said and he looked at me with a blank expression. He was about to speak, but Aro came in then.
"Dear Scarlett," he said, "I'm going to take you back to Demetri's room now. He will be up shortly."
"Ok." I replied and followed Aro out. Demetri looked like he was thinking about something. Whatever he was thinking seemed to make him really sad.
~Three days later~
"Where are you taking me?" I asked as I sat with Demetri in his car.
"Scared little pet?" he teased and I rolled my eyes. Demetri was back to his usual teasing self, but I couldn't help but notice that he seemed upset. When I tried to ask him what was wrong, he just changed the subject. Aro gave Demetri some time off so he could heal. His injuries on his arms were still healing and I noticed that they were leaving faint scars on his smooth skin.
It was eight at night and I was trying to think about where he was taking me. Finally, after a long drive, he stopped at a place and walked me up a hill. I watched him set out a blanked and a dimly lit lantern.
"I promised I'd take you to a picnic didn't I?" he smiled and helped me sit down. After I ate he turned off the lantern and lay down. I lay next to him and looked up at the sky. The sky was beautiful with all the stars. Demetri and I lay there for a while pointing out shooting stars. I tried to convince him to make a wish, but he refused saying that wishes don't come true.
"You can still wish." I replied, "even if it doesn't come true."
"Then why would I make the wish when I know it's not going to come true?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Well," I said, "I guess it gives you something to hope for." I replied and he stared for a minute before looking at the stars. After a while Demetri said it was time to go and helped me into the car.
"Where are we going now?" I asked when I noticed that he wasn't driving back to town. Demetri didn't respond, he just held my hand and focused on the dark road. I drifted off to a light sleep and woke up when the car stopped and Demetri carried me onto the Volturi's private jet.
"Are we going somewhere?" I asked as he sat me down in a seat and buckled me up. The engines were already started.
"You are going," he said looking up at me from his kneeling spot by my seat.
"Huh?" I replied and he took a deep breath.
"You are going back to Forks." He said so lowly that I could hardly hear him.
"Bu-" I started and was cut off when he kissed me. It was a soft and gentle kiss. He pulled away and looked into my eyes.
"Let's not say goodbye Scarlett," he said, "for now I'm going to say farewell."
"But why?" I asked still in shock.
"Because I once heard someone say that if you love someone then you should set them free and if it was meant to be then they will come back. So I'm setting you free and from this moment on I will hold onto the hope that you will return. Even if you don't I will still continue to love you and wish for your happiness even if it isn't with me." He stood up and kissed me again.
"Farewell." He said and then was gone. I didn't even have time to react and by the time my brain was working again, the jet was in the air. I got up quickly and looked out the window. I could make out Demetri leaning against his car on the run way watching the jet.
"Farewell then." I said knowing he couldn't hear me.
