Abbey's POV

We stayed in each other's embrace for a few minutes until I heard the kettle whistle. I reluctantly pulled away from him and made him his cup of tea.

"Want to watch a movie with me?"

"Sure." I walked back to the couch and he had his hands on my hips from behind the whole time. We sat down and I snuggled close to him under the blanket. I pressed play for the movie I was watching but we weren't paying much attention to it. My head was pressed against his chest and I could feel his heartbeat thumping slowly.

"So how was your week-end?" I asked again, this time hoping for details.

"We had fun." He was gently running his fingers through my hair while I played with his shirt. "We went up there with two cars since we don't all fit in my truck. You should have seen them, they were so excited about going there."

"I bet."I just wanted to keep hearing his voice and hoped the subject of my week end wasn't going to come up.

"When we got there, they got to ride in the bed of my truck so we could have lunch and buy supplies for the two days. Then Ben went swimming with Kelly and I went fishing with Griffin."

"You managed to get into a boat with your boot?" I looked up at him.

"Yeah." He chuckled. "Wasn't easy though."

"Catch anything?"

"Yeah, a couple of fishes. And some advice."

"Advice about what?"

"About us." He simply said still running his hands in my hair. "He said it was stupid, our fight. Said I needed to fix it. All I could do after that is think about you, about us."

"Do you want to fix it?" Even though he had kissed me and we were now snuggled on the couch together, I couldn't help my insecurities from coming out.

"It was stupid of us to fight in the first place. I know you love those boys and I realize that you only wanted to keep them close to all of us."

"Yeah but our fight got you hurt. Chief is going to be so mad at me tomorrow."

"I don't think so." I pulled away from him and sat straight.

"He said that if we couldn't keep our personnel life separate from our professional one that we'd have a different conversation."

"I could have had that argument with anyone." He pushed a strand of hair out of my eyes. "We can deal with Boden if and when it comes." He ran a hand under my eye as if a tear had fallen. "You look like you had a rough week-end. Everything ok?" I pulled slightly farther away from him and shrugged.

"Maybe we can talk about something else." I hoped he could see the pleading in my eyes but he took my hand in his and ran his thumb on my knuckles.

"This is my fault isn't it?"

"No it's fine really." I really didn't want to talk about it.

"Abbey." He warned.

"Fine, the night before you left I didn't sleep a minute and then the girls came and got me drunk off my ass so I could have a decent night of sleep."

"Come here." He pulled me to him again and ran a hand on my arm. "I'm sorry." He kissed my forehead. "I didn't intent for you to have a week-end like that but I was so stubborn that I didn't call you back. Kelly told me you called his place."

"Yeah. Did he also tell you I sounded desperate?" I mumbled but he caught it.

"No. I think he was too mad at you, Shay made him tell me you called."

"Was?"

"Yeah. We talked at the lake and it's all good." Matt repositioned us so that we were lying against each other on the couch, the blanket lazily draped over us. I was so tired that my eyes started to feel heavy and just let sleep get to me.

Matt's POV

After moving us on the couch so we were lying down, we didn't exchange a single word. I could hear her breathing even out and I looked down at her to find her asleep against me. I watched her sleep for a little bit before closing my eyes and letting sleep take me, not even bothering to move us to a more comfortable place. I woke up the next morning as the sun peeked through the living room window and stiffled a yawn before realizing that someone was asleep against me. The memories came back to me then and I moved a strand of hair out of her face and looked at her sleep. I became a little worried when her brows furrowed together, she seemed like she was dreaming. As I put my hand on her cheek, she woke up with a start, sweat forming on her forehead.

"It's ok, you're ok." I whispered softly, looking her straight in the eyes.

"I'm sorry about that." She looked down.

"Want to talk about it?"

"Bad dream. You're here so it's all good." She smiled and kissed me. "I'll go fix us breakfast so we're not late for shift."

"So you're not late for shift." I grinned at her.

"Oh yeah, I forgot." She giggled and bounced in the direction of the kitchen, leaving me here to think about what she said about her dream. I finally got up a few minutes later and went to join her in the kitchen. I went behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist.

"Did something happen to me in your dream?" I leaned my chin on her shoulder. I felt her body stiffen slightly, giving me my answer. "I'm ok, it's just my leg."

"But it could have been so much worst Matt." She turned around from the stove and faced me.

"But it's not. You have to stop thinking about that."

"I sure as hell would like that but my mind has different idea." She grumbled before turning back to facing the stove.

"Why don't you stay here today? Take an extra day to get better before going back?"

"They would probably kill me for cancelling my shift with so little time before we start it."

"Come on baby, cancel, I'll go do my paperwork and I can come back and we can just relax together. Besides, no one other then the girls or Severide would really question it." I kissed her neck.

"Fine." She conceded and went in the living room to make the call and I took over breakfast duties. She came back a few minutes later with a smile on her face. "It's done."

"So is breakfast, have a seat." She simply made eggs with bacon and got some coffee going. We ate in comfortable silence and I made my way back home for a change of clothes before going to the firehouse.

I clumsily walked up the drive to the house before going in, the trucks out for a call. I went straight to my office and started doing my paperwork. About thirty minutes, Kelly walked up to my door and knocked.

"So?" He smirked.

"So we talked."

"That's it? No make up sex?" He sounded as if it was the only way to work things out.

"No make up sex. We kissed, we talked and we fell asleep on the couch."

"Than care to tell me what the hell you're doing here this morning?"

"Had some paperwork to do, I'm heading back there after." I smiled at him.

"For some make-up sex." He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.

"Get your mind of the gutter." I tossed him a ball of paper before he left laughing. I went back to my report until Gabby came barging in.

"What did you do?" Her tone was threatening. In all the years since we became friends, I hadn't see her quite like that before.

"I didn't do anything." I defended myself.

"Why isn't she here then?" She was fuming.

"Keep your voice down. I'm the one that told her to cancel her shift. I went to see her last night and we talked a bit and then we talked again this morning."

"So everything is good?" She leaned against the window.

"Yes. I thought it would be good to take the day easy, work everything out."

"Good because you didn't see her yesterday when we got there, she was a real mess."

"She won't talk about it but I saw it in her eyes when I went to see her yesterday. She only said that she didn't sleep."

"She'll tell you when she wants to."

"I know. Thanks for looking out for her Gabs."

"I'm looking out for the both of you. Come on! Get out of here and go be with your girl." She smiled before leaving.

Ok so now to hoping no more interruptions came so I could finish up and go back to Abbey's.

"Care to tell me what happened?" Herrmann crossed his arms over his chest. He looked like a father on a mission.

"Come in and close the door Herrmann." He closed the door behind him and stood against it, a sign I shouldn't get too comfortable.

"I'll ask again. What happened between you and Abbey and do you know the real reason why she's not here this morning?"

"Look Herrmann, we had a fight about the Darden boys."

"That I know, we all heard it."

"I went in the fire my head on the fight and then I froze her out." He got up from where he was leaning. "It was stupid I know."

"You better make it right Casey and I mean it. One more stupid thing coming from you and you'll see a side of me you never have before."

"I'm working on it and for the record, I am making it right. As soon as I finish these reports and hand them in to Boden, I'm going back to spend some more time with her."

"Is that why she's not here, claiming to be sick?"

"Yes. I put her through one hell of a week-end and we need, well I need some time to fix it."

"Good. Take care of her so she comes back in one piece next shift."

"Yes sir." I had rarely seen Herrmann this mad except when it came to Cindy and his kids and right now, it was pretty clear that Abbey was family to him. I exhaled sharply when he left my office without saying another word and went back to my paperwork. It took me another thirty uninterrupted minutes before I got up and headed to Boden's office.

"I got the reports from last shift chief." I walked into his office.

"Close the door behind you and have a seat." I did as I was told and put my reports on his desk before he spoke again. "Is everything ok?"

"Sure chief, everything is ok. Anything I need to know?"

"Come on Matt. We all heard your argument with Abbey during last shift. Have you talked to her since you left the hospital?"

"I went to see her yesterday as soon as I came back from Lake Carroll with the Darden boys."

"And did the two of you work it out?"

"Almost. We'll be good for next shift if that's what you're wondering."

"I sure hope so because I need my lieutenant's head in the game. How is the leg?"

"I'm seeing the doc tomorrow and I should be back by the end of the week. And my head will be in the game chief."

"It's good to hear. Now get out of here and go spend time with Abbey."

"Thank you chief." I got up and walked out of the firehouse.

Abbey's POV

Once Matt was gone to the station, I took a shower and tidied up the house a little bit because since Matt had been discharged from the hospital, I had barely taken care of it. When I was done, I heard the knock on the door. I went to open it for Matt.

"Hey you're back. What took you so long?" I kissed him gently.

"Well I had three visits and finished off in Boden's office." He removed his coat and hung it in the front closet.

"That bad?" We went and sat on the couch again, my legs curled up under me and me curled up into Matt's side, his arm circling my shoulders.

"First came Kelly surprised we hadn't had make-up sex yet, then a very infuriated Gabby and finally a very pissed off Herrmann. I've never been scared of him like that before." He laughed. "Even as a candidate."

I giggled at the last part. "What about Boden? How mad do I need to expect him to be when I come back next shift?"

"He wasn't mad, just fatherly." He shrugged.

"I hope he's fatherly with me too. Lower ranks tend to get all the wrath."

"It'll be fine I promise."

"So what did Herrmann have to say?" I asked cautiously.

"Said that if I didn't fix it that I'd see a side of him I've never seen before."

"I wouldn't put that theory to test. What about Gabby and Kelly?"

"Well Gabby went all big sister on me and like I said before Kelly came wondering if we had make-up sex."

"The girls were a big help this week-end." I smiled up at him and pulled my legs from under me and straddled his hips. "And I like Kelly's idea about make-up sex." I kissed him slowly at first and then a bit harder. He put his hands on my hips as we deepened the kiss before I felt his body stop and pull away.

"As much as I want this to continue, I think we need to talk more about your week-end first." He put a gentle kiss on my lips.

"Do we really have to?" I pouted.

"Yes. What happened?"

"Before or after you were discharged?" It had started a few days before the week-end.

"All of it." I got off of him and sat on the living room table, hands between my legs and eyes on my feet.

"Well when you got out of surgery, Kelly refused to let me see you. Then the girls gave me a pep talk and I tried again but Kelly wouldn't have it so I ended up coming back here and falling asleep, crying. I knew it was all my fault and I felt so bad for being the reason you got hurt. The next morning, I tried going to see you again and Kelly said you didn't want to see me and he was so mad, he didn't want me anywhere near you so I left and I drank one beer after another until Peter showed up to talk some sense into me. The next morning, we went together so I could try seeing you again but you had already been discharged." I was trying to get everything out before letting him talk but lucky for me, he just let me say everything. "That's when I left you those two messages. Then I tried Shay's place and Kelly turned down my request to talk to you saying you weren't there, that's the night I didn't sleep. The next afternoon, I had already opened a bottle of wine when the girls arrived at my place with three more and some food. They said I drank two bottles to myself but all I know is that it helped me sleep a few hours." There it was. I had told him the whole thing. I was still sitting on the living room table, eyes still to the floor when I felt his fingers bring my head up so he could look at me.

"I'm sorry. That's not I was trying to do. In fact, I didn't know what to do. I was so mad at you at first and yet all you wanted was for me to be happy."

"I know how much you love those boys and I know it's going to kill you when they leave."

"I don't know what i'll do when they leave but I made a promise to Griffin that i'd always be there for them, they just have to call."

"And I'm sure that you'll be able to see them sometimes. Milwaukee is only a few hours away from here."

"You're right, I have to see the good sides in this situation."

"Absolutely." I smiled at him.

"Now come here." He pulled me back on the couch and laid down, pulling me on top of him. "I believe you started something." He put a hand on my cheek and kissed me. It was slow at first but then I wrapped arms around his torso and intensified it. When air became an issue, I pulled away slightly and leaned my forehead against his.

"Are we good?" I can't help but ask.

"We're good, just a small bump." he smiled at me. "Oh and by the way, Heather asked us if we were still on for diner before they left."

"Absolutely. I'll call her later, set a date." I kissed him again. We spent the rest of the day just lounging together in the living room and only separated when it was time to eat. When night came, Matt spent the night with me. Make-up sex wouldn't be for tonight, both of us just content of being back on track.

a/n Finally Matt and Abbey talked more about what happened when they had that argument that resulted in Casey getting injured.

Up Next: Mills returns from his injury and we see where his relationship with Gabby is heading.
