Chapter 21
"It's nice to see that you actually care about me," Kaito spoke with a hoarse voice as his eyes looked to see the familiar face. Since his injuries weren't major, he didn't have to have any bandages wrapped around his body to hide cuts.
The figure shook his head in reply and turned away from the light, "Nonsense – I only came here for information; it seems that the ryoka got the best of you." He snorted at the vision before he glanced back with hard grey eyes.
"Well, she did catch me off guard – it was completely dirty though," The third seat pushed himself up from the bed to meet the man's gaze again. "Alright Atsushi, what do you want to know?"
The fellow third seat pushed his glasses back on his face and showed a stern glare, "I want to know about the ryoka that put you in the fourth division in the first place." He straightened his posture to take his glare out of the window, "Madarame refused to tell me about his opponent – but the least I could do is go after the one hasn't gone into hiding."
Kaito let out a sigh of exhaustion. None of this would happen if it he hadn't fought; fighting wasn't the kind of things that he did. After all, he preferred to listen to music or read. The only reason why he happened to run into the fight was because of Tosen Taicho's orders to capture any ryoka. Another sigh escaped his lips as he recalled the moment onwards. This case was beginning to get troublesome.
"She is a girl with dark clothing and silver hair in pigtails," Kaito began his explanation and tried remembering her face. "Her weapon was strange – as if it was made out of wood but it was pretty strong so if you are to encounter her, you should be careful." Atsushi's eyes narrowed in determination as the injured man continued. No one will escape from the third seat of the Sixth Division, "And her name is Kobayashi Suki."
-:-
"Man Kei's been gone for ages," Suki growled as she pulled out another sushi from the small tray she was given. With a nod of approval, the silver haired female shoved the food into her mouth to prevent herself from talking. "I wonder what was wrong with her," As Suki thought back she recalled the frightened expression from the girl before she raced off. Suki could've sworn that she heard something about some fukutaicho losing a fight but she didn't get the details. In fact, Suki was literally ordered by Kei to stay put in her room and rest up.
It had been a few hours since Suki had the conversation with Ukitake and despite being the enemy; the guy was pretty laid back. He was willing to let her stay with them for a few days, just until they worked out how Rukia was going to get out of the execution. Now the sun set over Soul Society and Suki was beginning to ponder about the taicho.
As Suki finished her story (evidentially, it was the same story that Yoruichi had given to Kukaku but she left out that she was sent here by Kisuke and guided by Yoruichi) she let out a sigh of relief. It felt like something had squashed her lungs and now they had been released from their suffocation.
"I see," Ukitake nodded with a firm expression in his handsome features. Suki raised an eyebrow in suspicion but the taicho had given her a serious look, "I know it wasn't possible, but you and your friends shouldn't have attempted to rescue Kuchiki Rukia this way." Kei cocked her head in the background as Suki was about to snap at the taicho. The only reason why she was here in this rescue party was because she needed to protect Orihime. But even her reason of being in this place was in some other area. Before Suki could say any more of her problem; Ukitake continued, "I have sent a request to have a discussion with Central Forty-Six but they haven't responded yet."
"Central Forty-Six?" Suki whispered with confusion flashing her features. She didn't understand anything about the shinigami world – for a moment, Suki actually considered that shinigami were just myths and she would wake up back to her old life.
"Yes – they were the ones that put Kuchiki in this situation," Ukitake replied before he flashed a friendly smile, "However I do admire your efforts to save one of my subordinates. For now, you should stay here and avoid trouble – I'll even put Mizushima as your guide so you don't run into anyone serious."
Kei's excitement appeared in her features and Suki inwardly groaned at her cheers. This girl was weird as it was, why did she have to deal with a girl that tripped over her own feet during a fight?
"I'm on it Taicho," Kei announced before the caramel haired female dragged Suki out of the room, "Come on Suki! The food in my room isn't going to eat itself!"
"Nice meeting you Suki-san," Ukitake waved a goodbye as Suki showed a scowl of irritation. Being in an amusement park with screaming kids sounded better than this ridiculous scheme of theirs.
"I wonder why the taicho wants me to stay," Suki pondered to herself before looking at the shihakusho she wore. Even Suki admitted she looked pretty badass as a shinigami – but she wasn't as jerky as them... Then again, Suki did admit she was a jerk to others. Only to the ones that really deserve her jerky attitude.
Again, Suki couldn't help but ponder on the situation with the crew. When Kei had rushed away, Suki had a feeling that Ichigo was badly wounded and weak but she didn't know why. Out of all of the crew, Suki could sense Ichigo the most – she once again didn't understand why she could sense him more than the others but maybe it had to do with the fact that he was a shinigami. Other than Ichigo no one else seemed to having troubles – thankfully.
Yet the thought that never left Suki's mind was the mysterious light that took down Kei's. With confusion, Suki looked at her hands and frowned in suspicion. Yoruichi mentioned that her power was more of a muscle ability, it was much different to what happened earlier. She only had these mysterious powers for a short time so it was no surprise to see that they were showing her different things.
Wow, had it only been a month since Suki had these powers? It had felt like such a long time ago when she was just a cranky silver haired freshman that glared at morons that dared to say 'Bwahaha'. Funny. That had been the first time she encountered with the spirit world, if only she had known about this in the future, then she would've slapped her past self in the face for getting forced to go with her dad.
It was strange – Suki definitely had to ask Kisuke about her new situation.
Surprise flashed Suki's features when she heard the door slide open and saw that Kei had looked like she had seen something scarring. Was it actually possible for shinigami to see something scarring? After all, they fought each other and hollows nearly every day of their lives.
But then again, Kei had mentioned to Suki that humans weren't that different to the shinigami. She didn't think it was possible, but when Suki saw the way that some shinigami acted – it was familiar to the way that human friends acted.
If only they knew about personal space.
Kei let out a sigh of depression and sat on the futon beside Suki, "I'm sorry for leaving you like that Suki..." She whimpered before dropping her head, "One of my friends was critically hurt by yours and his condition was awful. I was lucky to even be able to see him after he got locked up as well."
Wait... what?
"Why was your friend locked up?" Suki asked with a scowl of irritation, "Did he let one of us go to our mission or something?"
"It was because of his taicho," Kei replied rather heatedly which surprised Suki. She wasn't used to seeing this bubbly girl so angered, "Abarai fukutaicho was a close friend of Rukia but his own taicho locked him up because he lost."
There was something about that name that struck a cord in Suki's brain. She knew that she heard the name somewhere before, but dismissed the thoughts for now. Besides, Suki was more annoyed at the fact that Kei's friend got locked up because he lost a fight. More importantly, who was the one that actually fought with this fukutaicho? Maybe it had been Ichigo, because he too was weakened around the time that Kei ran off.
"Don't worry Kei," Suki whispered as she awkwardly patted the girl's shoulder in sympathy. Kei looked back up with surprise in her minty eyes, "Once we save Kuchiki, we'll save your Abarai fukutaicho guy then we can all live as criminals."
Kei stifled a laugh but she nodded in agreement, "We should get some sleep... I know that tomorrow is going to be a big day."
-:-
"Who are you?" Kei asked, shivering after recalling the harsh events. "Why did you protect me?" The stranger lifted his gaze to meet Kei's. His glasses were crooked but the steel coloured eyes remained focused on her.
"My name is Ukeire Atsushi," He said with a wince. Kei looked at the bruises that this man suffered for her sake. This was her fault he was like this at the moment. "I did it because I couldn't bear to see a little girl get hurt."
Kei woke up bright and early after the memory she recollected the night before. Her eyes narrowed when she remembered the details. It had been many years that night, yet Kei still constantly recalled everything that happened.
She had always been the early bird. Back when she and Rukia were in the academy, Kei would always be the first to wake up and end up waking her companion who was still asleep. It still hadn't changed when Kei woke up with messy bed hair to see that Suki was asleep on the futon beside her. The shinigami almost laughed when Suki snorted in her sleep to turn over.
There was something about Suki that made Kei want to know why she was rescuing Rukia. Sure, Kei wasn't complaining or anything – they needed to find a way to rescue her but they had known her only for a few months. It was impossible to have such a connection in a short time. But then again, Suki mentioned earlier that they weren't close and had another mission on her mind.
Then there was the issue about Renji.
As soon as she felt his reiatsu lower, Kei knew that she couldn't hold back so she raced in to find the redheaded fukutaicho. Unfortunately, when Kei arrived on the scene it had already been too late – Kuchiki Taicho had ordered his arrest without any treatment. Even with Kira and Hinamori fukutaicho defending Renji, Kei was disappointed when she saw that the cold taicho dismiss them like they were nothing. The thoughts of the very man angered Kei sometimes – it was like he just kept taking her friends and family away from her.
After he left, Kei then went against the taicho's orders to heal Renji himself. Now he was locked away with his injuries healed in the sixth division barracks. Maybe Suki will be true to her word and rescue him after they had rescued Rukia.
Kei's friendship with Renji began when he came back after his first big mission. The redhead was in the fifth division back then, but even so he had so many injuries that Kei assumed he was from the eleventh. When he told her that he wasn't, Kei had to admit that she was shocked by the amount of injuries but she healed him anyways, assuming that Renji would return less from practise.
Boy was she wrong.
In fact, Renji's injuries only increased every time he went to the fourth. Kei had never been so surprised in her life, seeing that he was a man that really suited in a battle unit. During those days when he would see her, Kei would rant about tiny details of her day as she fixed him. Soon enough, Renji too started having a conversation and their strange friendship was born. However it wasn't long until Renji moved to that the eleventh division as a seated officer. He had his training from Madarame Ikkaku and the injuries were only getting worse. Around that time, Kei had her first promotion as a seated officer and she saw him more often.
It was strange to think that they became friends because Renji was a reckless fighter. With another sigh of worry, Kei looked out of her window to look at the familiar white tower. Poor Renji, he was probably already going through the worst feeling when he found out Rukia's punishment but now he was stuck in a cell for losing against one of the ryoka (since Kei still didn't know their names, she had continued to call them by their current names).
It's time for me to stop worrying, Kei told herself as she stood up to get dressed for the day. She fixed her shihakusho before dealing with her long caramel hair. As she ran her fingers through her locks, Kei wondered if it had been better when it was shorter, like it was in Rukongai. But since she grew it, she knew that it would feel strange if she cut it.
"What the..." Hearing Suki's groggy voice, Kei turned to see her companion (which happened to be the enemy to Soul Society) wake up to look at her surroundings. It wasn't long until Suki's amber orbs met Kei's and the human let out a yawn, "Oh yeah... Morning Kei..."
"Good morning Suki," Kei chimed as she looked back at her new friend, "Well today we're going to go look for your friends, right?"
Surprise flashed Suki's features before she nodded in approval, "I had a hunch last night that one of the guys weren't too far. His presence disappeared since last night, but I think we should look around there to find something out."
Kei stared at Suki in silence for a moment before she spoke with a cheerful grin on her face, "Wow," She sighed with admiration, "Are you some sort of wizard?"
Suki's nerved face turned into one with a scowl, "No I'm not a wizard... though I'm surprised that you know what that is..." She tied her hair up in its familiar high ponytail to disguise herself, "I thought you guys would do the same thing too – you know if you look for someone you usually check around the area they were seen last."
"Nope," Kei spoke up with an innocent stare. Wow, it was strange to see someone with different thoughts and views on how to track someone down. "I wouldn't have done that if I was looking for someone," Suki smacked her own face with her hand before shaking her head in dismissal.
"Whatever," Suki let out a sigh to calm herself down and Kei watched with curiosity as Suki began to dress herself. It was strange to see the silver haired female getting dressed, but it wasn't like Kei could see anything. Instead of getting curious, she turned away with warm cheeks; slightly embarrassed that the human was changing without a care in the world.
When Kei turned around, she saw that Suki was fixing up the obi of her shihakusho. Her amber eyes where in concentration before she finished tying and hung the strap of her unique weapon on her shoulder.
"What is that thing anyways?" Kei wondered curiously as she pointed at Suki's weapon. Suki's brow rose in response before she gave a glance towards the wooden object.
"It's my bat," Suki replied as she picked up the clothing from the night before. "Usually it's used in a game called baseball, but sometimes it can be used as a weapon, my power adds impact to the attacks I make but for some reason I can only use my bat because it was modified to handle my reiryoku."
Kei honestly didn't understand any of it, but she simply smiled to show her companion that she understood, "Cool! Now let's go do some paper-!" A knock interrupted Kei's speaking and an unfamiliar shinigami opened the door. At first the shinigami was surprised and was about to question Suki's appearance but the silver haired female spoke up.
"Sleepover," She quickly said and the shinigami showed a frown of confusion.
"Is something wrong?" Kei wondered gently as the shinigami dismissed the thoughts and continued with a grave expression.
"Ukitake Taicho wants to see you alone Mizushima," Both Kei and Suki spared a glance at each other but it wasn't long until Kei nodded with a smile.
"No problem," As the shinigami left, Kei turned to look at Suki. "Can you stay here for a bit? I think it might be some paperwork that I missed out on." Kei left Suki alone in the room and followed the path towards Ukitake's office and knocked quietly. She wondered what it was about, could it really by important if it was paperwork? "Taicho? It's Mizushima Kei speaking."
"Come in," Kei immediately opened the door to see Ukitake sitting by his desk with a cup of water in his hands. "I'm glad that you could make it Mizushima," He offered a seat for the unseated officer with a hint of concern in his eyes, "Please take a seat."
Kei followed his orders and sat in front of him with an innocent expression, "Is there something wrong Taicho?" When his expression deepened, Kei leaned closer with a hint of concern on her face, "Does it have do with Suki?"
"Not Suki-san herself but it could mean her companions," Ukitake replied as calmly as he could. "There has been an incident, involving Aizen Taicho." The caramel haired female didn't speak, but it didn't stop her from blinking at his words, "Last night he was murdered."
"Aizen Taicho?" Kei's eyes went as wide as saucers as she glanced at her taicho, "That sounds impossible! Does anyone know who did it?"
Ukitake met Kei's gaze gravely, "Unfortunately we have to suspect the ryoka." It only took a moment for Kei to realise what he was implying but her eyes went wide with disbelief. Was it possible that Suki had been lying about rescuing Rukia? But how could Suki kill a Taicho if they were with each other the entire night, "Don't worry – I do not suspect her because I recognise her reiatsu but it doesn't mean that her team didn't do it."
"So what do you want me to do?" Kei spoke up with a hint of seriousness, "It's different if they were rescuing Rukia-san but I can't forgive them if they murdered Aizen Taicho!" Before Ukitake could reply, a reiatsu in the distance made both shinigami widen their eyes. Kei knew who it was from the distance; she could sense the strong presence anywhere.
"It looks like Zaraki Taicho is having a battle," Ukitake muttered in displeasure before looking back at Kei. "Just ask Suki-san if any of her friends would have the ability to murder Aizen Taicho – she's our closest source of this group." He let out a sigh as he got rid of his serious face, "That's all Mizushima and be careful when you're asking Suki-san."
Kei nodded with a small smile, "Thanks Taicho, I will do my best." She pushed herself up and headed back into her room without another word. Was it actually possible for Suki or her friends to commit murder? So far, it appeared that none of the shinigami were murdered from the rumours but still, there had to be the consideration that they did break in.
But what would their intention be? Just as Kei slid open the door to her room, she let out a call, "Suki, there's something I have to tell you-" She stopped when she realised that no one was in the room and Kei felt the surprise flash through her. "Suki?" Suki's human clothes were neatly folded on her desk. Her mint eyes noticed something on top of the clothing and recognised it as a note.
Kei's shaky hand picked up the note with a grim expression and peeked at it, expecting the worst insult to be spat at her.
Thanks for everything Kei, I promise you that I owe you a favour but right now I need to go help one of my friends. Sorry that it had to be a stupid note – Suki.
-:-
The young Suki held her bat with a smile as she headed back towards her house. She was so excited that she had her game to play soon – she was going to show everyone of how much she had improved. Just as Suki was going to turn to head to her familiar street, a flash of orange gained her attention and she had to pause to gave herself a better view.
Her curious nature got the best of her and she slowly strolled to see the familiar face. It had been the boy crying at the funeral, the one that lost his mother. He looked more miserable than he did at the funeral and Suki knew that she didn't understand what the boy was going through. After all, she had her best friend and her dad with her, Suki couldn't be any happier – but this boy lost one of the people that loved him unconditionally. But for some strange reason she felt the pity crawl in her chest and she knew that she had to help.
With a brave face, Suki approached the saddened boy and showed off a determined smile. The orange haired boy looked up with surprise and confusion in his young features.
"Hello there," She spoke with a sweet smile, "Can I sit next to you?"
His reaction was just what she expected, innocent blinking but he slowly nodded and allowed her to take a seat next to him. "Sure."
Kurosaki, you really know how to be a thorn on my side. Suki thought seriously as she dashed towards his location. When she sat in Kei's room, Suki felt the powerful presence as well as Ichigo's and once again she had that feeling that Ichigo was in a situation. Normally, Suki really wasn't concerned about his wellbeing, after all she watched him take out the giant hollow, and knew that the moronic strawberry could take care of himself.
But still – if he died than Orihime would've been depressed for ages then Suki knew that she would be cursing the heavens... or Soul Society.
As she ran, another feeling in the distance suddenly made her halt her tracks to process the current moments. It had been Chad, Suki hadn't noticed his presence since he was thrown into the death city but now that it was fading, she could tell that he was in trouble.
"Chad," She wanted to go rescue him but she knew that she had to focus on his presence if he was really wounded. Suki recalled Uryu calling this presence reiatsu or something along those lame lines. With a look of concentration on her face, Suki tried using her sixth sense to find that Chad's 'reiatsu' hadn't disappeared just yet. "Good, he's still alive," Suki relaxed and she went back to finding Ichigo. Just as she began running again, a cold presence made her stop with dread.
"My, my," The spine chilling voice gained Suki's attention and she turned to see who it was. Ichimaru Gin smiled at her direction but it was the smile that made Suki shudder as the goose bumps crawled up on her skin. As the taicho stepped forward, Suki automatically took a step back since she was unable to stand up to him. There was something about this man that made her attitude wane down, "It seems that we got a lost lil lamb."
Maybe he made the comment because of her white hair, right now Suki didn't care. This was her life that was on the line. She straightened her posture and gave a glance at her uniform. That was right, Suki wasn't wearing her normal clothes and she looked like a shinigami.
There was still a chance that she could slip out of this alive, "Not really Ichimaru Taicho." Suki decided to keep her voice low just in case it squeaked out of fear of being caught, "I sensed the ryoka and I wanted to capture him before anyone else did."
He looked towards the direction of Ichigo and let out a small chuckle, "That ryoka isn't one that a lil lamb like yerself shouldn't toy with – after all he managed to take down Abarai fukutaicho." Gin continued with the irritating smile of his, "I even fought with 'im before they charged in from the fireworks station. But yer would know that already, wouldn't ya?"
Surprise flashed in Suki's expression, determined to find out how he knew but then it hit her. Ukitake mentioned that it was easy for someone of his level to tell the difference. Then there was the case that the taicho actually did meet her before this mess started.
"Alright, you got me," Suki admitted as she stood up to glare at the taicho. She forced the fear out of her mind to fight the spine chilling feeling from his gaze, "So why did you let us go then? Back at the gates when you could've finished us all off in one go."
"I really don't know – I just like to have a bit of fun with my brand new toys," Gin replied easily which stopped Suki. The reason why they were all alive was because of this taicho's amusement?! Anger surged through her as she showed off an annoyed snarl.
"That sounds more stupid than the look on your face," Suki snapped in annoyance which gained the attention of the taicho. He raised an eyebrow in surprise, as Suki clenched her left fist. Her right fist was twitching slowly towards her bat. Maybe she could knock him off his feet by the element of surprise. After all – who would take her seriously if she charged at them with a wooden bat?
"It looks like ya feisty for a lil lamb," His smile darkened as he withdrew his tiny zanpakuto. "I hope that ya prepared for it, because I'll swallow ya whole." Before Suki could do anything, the taicho had already appeared behind Suki to strike her but she let out yelp to dodge the strike. She rolled out of the way and glared back at him as she regained her own breath.
What the hell is with this guy? He's so much faster than anyone I've encountered, Suki had to dodge another strike that he sent and she felt her feet stumble. Before she could trip however, Suki kicked out her leg and her boot connected with his chin. The taicho was surprised, leaning back as the silver haired female smacked into the ground.
"So ya have a little fight left in ya, lil lamb," Suki's eyes narrowed darkly as Gin prepared his blade. "I'm intrigued that ya've managed to make it this far." She pushed herself to her feet and determination flooded through her body.
"I'm in a hurry 'taicho' so you better move out of the way," Suki declared as she pulled out her bat. It was a good thing that she had managed to run into Kei; if she had her injuries Suki knew that she would've stood no chance. Once again, surprise appeared on the taicho's face as he glanced at Suki's weapon of choice.
"That's strange lil lamb," The taicho admitted out loud just as Suki charged towards him. He effortlessly held his blade to protect his face, "How are ya gonna win if ya don't have a blade to cut me with-!" As soon as Suki reached him, her bat glowed to show that her ability was activated and she swung it swiftly against his weapon. They clashed, and Gin was thrown back by the force but he managed to flip himself through the air to land back on his feet.
"Don't underestimate us humans you creep," Suki warned as she raised the glowing bat threateningly towards the taicho. Her eyes widened when she noticed something in the background and it made her stop her current fight.
"Ya know, I only underestimate ya because ya not paying attention," Somehow Gin was right behind her and it made Suki flinch with fright before jumping away. This guy was ridiculous, there was no way that she would definite a guy that was so spine chilling. "It looks like Kurosaki Ichigo managed to defeat Zaraki Taicho," Gin praised with a light smile as he stared in the direction of Ichigo once again, "Wait... it looks like he didn't make it. Such a shame."
Suki's eyes widened at the feeling of Ichigo's reiatsu fading. It was impossible; he had to have it under control – who else was going to be able to save Rukia? First Chad and now him, Suki seriously doubted that she, Uryu, Orihime, Ganju and Yoruichi were able to save Rukia with their separated situation. At least Ichigo had a bit of a chance.
"Ya not paying attention again," Gin whispered from behind her once again. She felt the goose bumps shoot up her body as she prepared to jump away but she heard his voice again, however it was from the front this time. "Shoot to kill," Pain shot through Suki's body as she felt something push her through the air, "Shinso." Suki let out a cry of agony, but she really didn't see the damage until she saw crimson droplets float into the air.
Was that...
Was it her blood?
Her eyes widened when she gazed down to see a ridiculously long blade puncturing through her abdomen. It was gross; Suki wasn't able to even understand on what the taicho had done. He stabbed her... but was this overstretched blade his ability?
"What the hell?" Her voice sounded a lot raspier than it had over a minute ago. She looked up to see Gin holding the long blade with a wide smile on his face and some drops of red on his face. That was her blood; her blood must've splashed on his face when he impaled her.
As the blade pulled out of her body, Suki's remaining strength sapped from where she stood and she collapsed to the ground with a curse. This was how a taicho fought? It was incredibly powerful, yet Suki could tell that this fox faced creeper wasn't even trying to fight. She imagined how strong the other taichos were; it was a miracle that she didn't have to fight Ukitake.
"Ya a lucky lil lamb," Gin's voice echoed as her vision began to darken. Her eyes began to dull as she noticed his back on her and it appeared that he was walking away. "I've gotta go to a meeting, so I'll be back shortly, try not to die."
There was the desperate part of Suki that went along with his orders, she tried catching her breath but it didn't help that blood clogged her throat. Her eyelids drifted heavily and the last thing that she could catch was a dark figure.
"Look at you, all beaten down like that... It's a miracle you're not dead."
Suki forced herself to speak up as her body lifted by the unknown figure, "Who..." Without the strength to keep her awake, her consciousness left her.
A/n: I've wanted to write this part right at the beginning of this story to be honest. Atsushi's objective to find Suki, Kei's suspicion with Team Ryoka, Suki's past interaction with Ichigo and her fight with Gin. With Gin's personality I think a fight between them was inevitable since Suki's Suki. She couldn't take a joke even if it hit her in face. Suki and Gin... they're destined to fight in this story... but Suki only gets her ass owned... In your face Kobayashi!
Suki: ... -_-'
02-09-2014* It's Suki's birthday today. Hurray for Suki for being three years old today! As your present, you shall be stabbed by the legendary Ichimaru Gin! ... okay I suck at giving gifts
Ciao!
