Thump.
Wally quietly cursed at the offending counter the back of his head came in contact with. The red-head rubbed the sore spot slowly developing into a knot. He cringed at the pain he brought upon himself. Like usual. Ignoring the now numbing throb, he reached for the wrench across the bathroom tiles and went back to the sink with extra precaution of the top of the cabinet. With a furrowed brow and twisted lips in full concentration, Wally went back to work on the pipes for the sink in the kids bathroom.
"Not finished yet?" A voice lightly teased. Wally looked up to see Artemis leaning against the counter while propped on an elbow, peering down at him with a smirk. "I thought you said it should be easy to fix… like pie."
Wally groaned at her reply. "Why did you have to mention food? And no I never said that. Pie can actually be complicated to make if you don't know the specific arts it takes to make a perfectly crusted and filled marvelous piece of work—" He groaned again as his stomach rumbled in betrayal. "And fixing a leaking pipe is not that difficult." He mumbled to himself, "At least it shouldn't be."
Artemis shrugged, amused. "You're the one who went on a rant about needing the right qualities to make pie and confident to be Mr. Fix It with anything." She pointed out with a smug look. Wally ignored her, going back to his examination of the pipe.
After a moment of silence besides the clink of the wrench on the floor, Artemis added, "Well then, I'll fix dinner while you take your time to finish."
Wally perked up intrigued, narrowly avoiding hitting his head again. He ducked out from the cabinet, speaking before the thought could completely process in his mind. "Babe, you had me at dinner."
Artemis pressed her hands against the counter, pushing herself up while refraining from rolling her eyes at the obvious answer she should have expected. Wally watched for a moment as his wife left the room before begrudgingly going back to work on the loose pipe.
With a final turn of the wrench, Wally gave a sigh of achievement as he sat back on his heels. "And now for the finale," He replied to himself, reaching to turn on the sink. He watched with anticipation, listening to the water begin to filter down through the pipe. A large grin was plastered across his face. He fist pumped his victory. "And the Wallman is—"
His cheer was cut short due to the sudden thin spray of water directed at him from the connecting pipes. Quick as lightning, the speedster turned off the sink, discontinuing the assault of water. Wally groaned, letting his forehead hit the front of the cabinet in frustration. There went all his current hopes of being a decent handyman, at least around his own home.
Not willing to give up yet and call for assistance, he pushed himself to attempt to fix it one last time. Using a flashlight, Wally examined the pipe for any possible damages. The connecting pipes were indeed ever so slightly put back together crooked. The red head wiped down the pipes of the remaining dripping water. Before he could begin untwisting once more, Wally heard indistinct yells coming from the backyard. He dropped the towel and tools to lean back and listen carefully.
Jai rushed in, standing right in the doorway of the bathroom. Sheer panic was etched across the nine year old's face. "Diana's in trouble,"
Instantly picking up on his expression and tone, Wally darted up and out the door as soon as the words left his son's mouth. He barely had the notion to open the sliding glass door wider to fit through in his speedy trek to the backyard. Jai couldn't quite keep up with his father.
Irey watched from the side, biting her lip in worry as she intently watched her mother cradle her little sister in her arms. "She was running and collapsed," The red-headed girl briskly explained. Apollo quietly whimpered near the elder girl's side, sensing the alarm around his owners.
While on her knees, Artemis rocked Diana back and forth as she searched her over for any physical possibility to her reactions. The three year old heavily heaved, her eyelids nearly closed as she clutched her fists together. Diana naturally arched her back in attempts to breathe better.
The mother looked up, her brows together in desperation. "There's no darts or wounds I can see… I don't—" Her voice caught in her throat in a crossover between a hiccup and an uncontrollable sob.
Wally scooped his baby girl in his arms. Her dark gray eyes looked blearily at him through pieces of her dark hair. The father pushed the thick strands out of her face as she continued to struggle for air, her face beginning to pale. Without another moment's hesitation, he shifted her in his arms to have a better grip.
"I'm taking her to the hospital."
Artemis gently patted back her youngest hair as she gave a quick nod. "Hurry,"
Wally grabbed up a blanket to wrap around Diana and took off out the door. The speedster held her close as he ran, his only focus on getting his daughter to safety.
Artemis wiped her watery eyes and sniffled as she hurried inside, Irey and Jai following closely behind her. She paced around the house in search of her car keys. The golden retriever continued to whimper in worry as he watched. Artemis whispered to herself that everything was going to be okay.
As soon as the keys and phone were in hand, she prepared to call out directions to get in the car when a whoosh entered in through the front door. The blonde instantly whipped her head around at the familiar sound. Wally wouldn't have come back so quickly. She felt a minor surge of relief as she recognized the blonde man standing in the front foyer. Barry was soon joined by a blur materializing into a fairly tall brunette young man.
The former Flash was quick to speak. "Wally said there was an emergency with Diana." He gestured to his future grandson. "Bart can stay here with the twins and I take you."
Artemis instantly nodded in agreement to the plan as she walked over towards him. Barry wasted no time in picking up his nephew's wife. Artemis naturally wrapped her arms loosely around his neck. Once Barry took off out the door, she turned her face inward towards him to avoid the wind blowing past her. The mother clutched a fistful of the man's shirt as she closed her eyes.
She quietly repeated in pleas to anyone listening above, "Please let my little girl be okay." Barry said nothing as he continued on.
Everything seemed to move in a haze as her feet walked through the building to their own accord. She found herself in the main lobby, intently looking around for any sign of the direction her husband and daughter could have gone. Luckily, Barry was there to gently coax her along to the desk nurse and do the talking where words failed her.
After what felt like countless hours of waiting when it was around twenty minutes or so, the anxious mother was finally called back. Artemis sighed in relief when she saw Diana sitting on the examination table. The three year old sat still, slowly taking in calm breaths as her eyes were closed. Nearby, Wally gently rubbed her arm in comfort. It took all of the blonde's willpower not to rush over and embrace her youngest daughter who seemed to be doing fine compared to not long before. Artemis took her daughter's tiny hand in hers as she visually examined her carefully.
"So what happened?" She eventually asked in a soft voice, turning toward the red-head.
Wally continued his gentle gesture. "Doctor Welch immediately took her in and was able to calm her breathing with a nebulizer."
"She had an asthma attack." A doctor with a few strands of dark graying hair walked in, folder tucked in his arm. He gave Artemis a nod as he continued his explanation. "Her lungs swelled up, narrowing the passageways for air and resulting in her difficulty to breathe. The cause could be from a heavy reaction to generally things like pollen, dust, or other tiny pollutants."
Dr. Nathan Welch gave a glance at the still composed youngster. "You have a remarkable little girl." Welch paused as he neared the parents continuing in a soft tone, "Diana's struggles in her breathing may have been an added combination with her trying to run faster than she could, heightening the risk of her contracting lungs."
He gave Wally a pointed look and the speedster understood immediately. Nathan Welch had been a doctor at Keystone Regional for years. In fact, he was the main doctor who had examined Wally when he had that accident that gave him his superspeed at age fourteen. When first learning the secret while studying his blood work and confronting the family as Wally was on rapid recovery, the doctor was trusted to keep the secret. Since then, Welch made it his duty to check on the West and Allen families as their personal doctor.
Wally was lucky that Welch had been on his shift at the time he arrived at the hospital, immediately volunteering to take the speedster and his child in as soon as he recognized him.
Artemis stayed silent, letting the doctor's words sink in. She was well aware that having asthma was a long term thing that can flare up and cause problems if one was not careful. She looked tenderly at her daughter. Diana blinked slowly to look around and look at her parents with brightening eyes.
Welch gave a small smile, watching the little girl with wonder. "Diana has already taken the intuition to remain moderately calm after getting over her attack to regulate her breathing patterns." He turned back to the parents, his expression serious. "Although she is learning quickly at such a young age, I would highly recommend refraining from placing her in potential stressful situations if possible."
And I'll end it there. Dr. Welch is a random OC conducted while writing just for reference.
