Chapter 21
Today was the day; the day her life was over. The only thing Alex had to be happy about was the fact that Jack was safe. She loved that little boy, more than she would have ever thought she could and his father, Brian, with those wonderful blue eyes. She hadn't known if she loved him for so long and then everything hit her all at once, like a tidal wave, knocking off your feet and swirling you around in its embrace. A tear slid down her cheek as she thought of the heartbreak Brian might have. He had already lost Mia and now she had been taken from him. She prayed that he would survive and be strong. She hoped desperately that he would find love again. She wished she could have been that love but she knew Gaven and his rage. She knew she would be stuck there forever and if she tried to escape, she'd be punished. Gaven would never kill her, at least not on purpose, because that would be too easy. Why released her to the sanctity of the afterlife when he could simply have her kept just healthy enough to make use of her.
She shivered as they rounded the corner. The familiar buildings of St. Paul in her sight and Minneapolis in the distance. Oscar hadn't talked to her aside from their two breaks at rest stations where he reminded her that if she tried to run he would go back to California and personal strangle the life out of Jack. The first time he had threatened her she nearly broke down. She didn't want anything to happen to that wonderful child. He was wide eyed and innocent and shouldn't ever have reason to be afraid.
They pulled up to a club, formerly known as First Ave. She trembled. They were in the center of the city, surely someone would notice Oscar escorting her inside, with her hands bound. That was not the case. The city had changed and Gaven had cops in his pocket. As she was pulled from the car she felt horribly naked from how the eyes of the men lined up at the door stared at her. Oscar pulled her to the side and through a separate entrance. The club had been changed significantly. She remembered being able to walk inside and go straight to the dancefloor, now there were rooms shapes much like cubicles, girls dancing in glass boxes near the bar, others servicing men in the corner booths behind and thin curtain. Her skin crawled as she was brought upstairs. He shoved her into a larger room. There was red short shag carpet and a circular bed with red satin sheets, wings hung on the post of the bed. She pounded on the door, begging to be let out but no one came. Alex wandered around the room, desperately trying to find another exit, a phone or a weapon but there was nothing. The only thing she found was a drawer full of multicolored and flavored condoms. She nearly vomited. Crumpling to the floor she cried, this was it, this was the end.
Alex wasn't sure how long she had slept for when she woke on the red shag floor. She recognized the room and knew she was still in hell. Her head whipped around when the door finally opened, she headed towards it quickly, only to be frozen midstep. The manifestation of her fears stepped through the door and grinned at her. "Gaven." Her voice came out as a soft and terrified whisper, it was like she was unable to speak. "Good. You remember my name. Now let's see if you remember a few other things." He said, taking a step towards her. She stepped back but his hand shot out like lightning and pulled her closer. His grip was like hot iron. "Come here." He said, his free hand roughly cupping her face and forcing it against his. Gaven's lips were the same, cold and firm and lethal against hers. He demanded entrance and when she whimpered and shoved at him in protest he broke in and took. Gasping loudly he released her with a shoved, allowing her to fall back onto the floor, watching her as she wiped her mouth, feeling disgusted. "That wasn't so hard." He told her with another grin. He patted the front of his pants and told her, "I'm not quite there yet. I've got a few business dealings to attend to, but when I am done. You're going to be reminded why I made such a good lover." He promised before leaving the room.
Alex crawled into the corner of the room and curled into a ball. She wished Gaven hand never found her. She wished she was back in California with Jack and Brian, falling in love and enjoying freedom and life. Now she could only think about how any hopes and dreams she might have had were being ripped away and soon enough, she would have no dignity left.
