Boy, can this thing move.
We've been driving around all of Seattle for about a half hour now. Christian has relaxed a little and even reclined his leather seat back some. We're circling around downtown and looking around at all the people and buildings while the windows are rolled down and the soft, warm breeze blows through the car.
"I really love this." I speak loudly over the wind. Christian takes my hand that he's holding and presses it against his lips in a soft kiss.
"Good. I'm glad." He says and places our intertwined hands back down between our seats. "I just want to make you happy, Anastasia." I feel his eyes on my face and gently ease the car into a stoplight. When the car is fully stopped, I look over at him.
"You do make me happy, Christian." I say and lean over to kiss his cheek. "You always have."
His mouth turns up in a giant grin that even shows his beautifully white teeth. The light changes and the car quickly takes off through the intersection.
"Why don't we say we go out again tonight? I know this amazing Chinese restaurant that I'm sure you'll love." Christian says.
He wants to go out again? I have to admit that I'm not too opposed to the idea. I think getting out more will help me get over what happened. Get over? As if I can ever forget what those men did to me. Every time I close my eyes I still feet their slimy hands roaming all over my body, his tongue still traces invisible paths over my neck, hands still-
"Ana, watch the road!" Christian's booming voice startles me out of my inner rant and back to reality. As I'm holding the wheel an oncoming black sedan makes its way into my lane and almost manages to run me off the road. Pure adrenaline courses through my body and I quickly jolt the steering wheel to the right and just barely avoid the tinted car. I swerve back into my lane and let out the breath that I was holding.
"Jackass." Christian mumbles under his breath. "You weren't paying attention, Ana." He scolds me. I know I should say something back, but I can't seem to find my voice. The adrenaline is now cooled, but this strange feeling remains and leaves my skin crawling. My stomach feels queasy and I can barely keep focus on the road.
"Ana?" Christina runs his hand over my forearm. "Are you alright?" I shake my head no and glance over at his worried face.
"I'm not feeling very well." My voice shakes a little on the way out. After we ease past another intersection I pull the car over to the side of the road next to a Starbucks. I look out the window to see all the pedestrians' eye fuck the car. Some even stop what they're doing altogether to take pictures with their phones.
"Ana, what's wrong? You're starting to worry me." Christian unbuckles his seatbelt and turns his whole body towards me.
"It's nothing." I whisper. "Just got a little queasy." I unbuckle my own seatbelt and reach for the handle. "Do you mind driving back home? I need some Advil or something."
Christian hesitates slightly before opening up his door. We both get out of the car and switch sides. I slide into the passenger seat and he takes control of the driver's side. Once we're all buckled up and the car is started, Christian's cell phone starts vibrating in his pocket. I practically hear his eyes rolling as he reaches in and puts it to his ear.
"Grey." His barks. "Yes, of course she's with me." He glances over at me. "What do you mean?" His eyebrows become bunched up in the middle of his forehead. I hear murmuring on the other end. It sounds like Taylor. I leave them to their business and look around at the outside world. I glance over across the street and watch all the pedestrians walk buy just going on about their day. I watch them move for a minute before the crowd breaks apart and only leaves me staring at one darkly dressed individual. The person is dressed in all black and is clearly male by the looks of his body structure. He's wearing a dark hat that covers his hair and part of his face. And his body is facing directly toward us. That same uneasy feeling hits me hard. I start to squirm in my seat, but can't manage to take my eyes off this man. I take a breath to say something to Christian, but it's lost as the man's head lifts up and his eyes meet mine.
They're completely black.
My scream is lost on its way out. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't look away. The eyes stare straight at me and hold my gaze like those of a predator hunting in the wild.
"WHAT!" Christian snarls over the phone. His loud voice makes me jump in my seat and my head snaps over to look at him. "Look, I don't care what you do just find him and get this over with!" He hangs up and slams his phone down into the cup holder.
"Christian, Christian, Christian." I fire off at rapid speed. I grab his arms and start shaking him like crazy. "Christian I-I-I." I can't get any words out.
"Ana, Ana, calm down. What? What is it?" He takes a hold of my hand and traps it in both of his.
"I saw him. I saw him." I look at him dead in the eyes. My crazy blue to his confused gray.
"Saw who, Ana?" He asks while looking at me like I've lost my mind.
I break eye contact and look back over at where I saw Black Eyes.
He's nowhere to be found.
I lean away from Christian and press my face up against the windows and search through the crowds.
Nothing.
"No, no, no, no, no, no." I mummer over and over. This cannot be happening. "I know I saw him, I know it." I feel the moisture collect in my eyes and finally fall over onto my cheeks. "He was there I swear!" I press my hand against the tinted window and point in the general direction of where he was standing.
"Ana, calm down." Christian tugs at my arm and spins me around to face him. He grips my shoulders in his strong hands and leans down to look me directly in the eyes. He uses his lips to brush away my tears and kisses the corner of my lips.
"I believe you." He says calmly. "I believe you. Just calm down and let's get out of here." I can tell he's trying to remain as calm as possible. He's not telling me something I can feel it.
"What did Taylor say to you on the phone?" I ask quietly. Do I really want to know?
Christian doesn't say anything. He releases me back into my own seat and turns his own body towards the front. He still doesn't say anything as he puts the car into gear and pulls out into traffic with ease.
"Christian…" I try again.
"He got out." He says without any trace of emotion. My heart stops cold in my chest. What the hell does that mean? It can't mean what I think it means? What if it's true? He's back and he's coming for me. And this time I'm with Christian…
I feel my chest heave up and down as I try to catch my breath. I can't even wrap my mind around this. I have no control of my emotions at the present moment. Sobs take control and more tears rush down my face and onto my neck.
"Ana. Ana…" I feel his hard hand grab mine and squeeze it tightly. "Look at me, sweetheart."
I refuse to open my eyes and just shake my head back and forth.
"Ana, now. Look at me." He says. I take a deep breath and face him. We're sitting at another stoplight and Christian leans over to grasp my face in both of his hands. I continue to shake my head until he practically forces me to stay still.
"Ana," He says. I slowly open my burning eyes and look at his. "Listen to me. I will not let anything happen to you. Okay? You're with me now. You're mine and I protect what's mine. Got it?"
I nod my head in slow motions. Tears still rush out of my eyes and I begin to shake with what I'm assuming is only fear.
"Oh, baby." He sighs and takes me into his arms. He hugs me tightly to his chest and breaths into my hair. "I'll keep you safe." He kisses my hair once before the light changes and he speeds off towards Escala.
Yeah, okay. But who is going to keep Christian safe?
