CHAPTER 21

Knife and gun at the ready Sydney and Derek gingerly entered the hidden room hoping to find Ferreira. Having immediately realised it was empty, apart from a table and a couple of chairs; they began to feel around the walls for a hidden exit; there just had to be one somewhere. Although the light was on, and had reflected enough light to show through the cracks of the secret doorway, it was actually still quite dark inside. However, as her eyes adjusted to the dimness, Sydney was able make out the shape of two large mugs which had been left on the table. Moving a little closer to examine them, she gave Derek a surprised look "they're still warm! That scuffling we heard must have been two men! My guess is they were waiting for the agents to leave, so they could return to the house for something; although I bet Ferreira's long gone."

Feeling a little annoyed that they'd escaped again; Sydney began checking the walls, hoping that if they found the exit quickly enough, they'd be able to catch them.

However, having only searched for three minutes Sydney decided to try the same trick they used to find this room and hurriedly began looking for the light switch. To her surprise, instead of finding that, she suddenly noticed a button near the door that they'd just come through. Giving Derek a knowing look, she pressed it and to her relief it opened up a cleverly disguised door, exactly opposite the first one!

Cautiously creeping through, in case the beasts were still there, they noticed right in front of them a long and dimly lit corridor. Having looked around quickly and taken about twenty steps, Sydney suddenly stopped in her tracks "so that's how he did it!" she said, looking angrily at two metal poles coming through the ceiling of the passageway.

"Who did what?" Derek asked, looking towards the top of the poles, which he noted descended from the centre of two large circular holes.

"Ferreira...he got out of his bedroom during the raid by sliding down a fireman's pole! It must have been very cleverly hidden, as the agents didn't find the top when they searched his room. There're two poles, so I suppose the second one leads to another bedroom" Sydney said, looking quite impressed by the ingenuity of the thug "I guess he knew he'd be discovered one day and took precautions to ensure he'd escape!"

"Yeah…I bet the other pole leads to Manuel's bedroom; but at least we know he didn't get away" Derek said, feeling his anger rise at the very thought of that brute's name!

"Come on, let's follow the corridor" Sydney said, giving the poles just one more look.

Having walked about 30 feet they eventually reached a dark staircase which they warily descended all the way to the basement. Derek, naturally, believed that once they reached the bottom, they'd be roughly where he and Nigel were held prisoner. However, to his surprise, they weren't, as this part of the basement didn't appear to be connected to where they were kept at all.

"What was that!?" Derek said, as they both heard more scuffling a short distance away.

"It could be rats, but my gut instinct tells me it's not" Sydney said, feeling quite anxious. Realising it could be Ferreira, or some of his men, they quickened their pace and followed what appeared to be a long and very damp tunnel. Brushing the cobwebs out of their hair as they walked really quickly, they eventually came to another door, which was amazingly simple to open. Just one press of a very visible button and, to their utter astonishment, they found themselves inside a massive church!

"What the!" Derek said, looking quite flabbergasted.

Totally stunned by their surroundings, Sydney took a deep breath and immediately sped towards some huge open doors which led out to the street "Darn it! There're too many people out there; I've no idea who to follow!" she said, looking very frustrated as she walked back to Derek.

"Surely the priest's not involved in all this!" Derek said, looking quite puzzled as Sydney closed the door to the passageway.

"It's quite possible he's not" she replied, having immediately noticed that now the door was shut it looked exactly like a large religious plaque and was totally unrecognizable as a door! "I think Cate should check him out anyway...you never know these days!"

Having had a good look around the church, and finding nothing, not even the priest himself, they left through a side door and discovered, much to their surprise, they were right next door to the hospital!

Feeling annoyed and frustrated, believing they'd just missed Ferreira, or some other important gang members; they decided to make the best of it and visit Nigel, even though they were rather dusty and didn't have good news.

Walking into the hospital, hoping Nigel was feeling better, they immediately noticed Preston sitting in the waiting room, looking very depressed; although he always seemed like that just lately.

Realising she looked quite untidy, Sydney pulled back her hair and patted down the front of her outfit before standing in front of Preston "Hey...any news on Nigel?...You didn't call me" she said, noticing he looked quite startled as he gazed up at her.

"Oh...oh... Sydney I'm so sorry...I totally forgot! I was so lost in my thoughts when I was with him….he was asleep the whole time you see" Preston said, looking a little embarrassed that he'd been so inconsiderate.

"What about the results of all those tests?" she said, looking hopeful, but dreading his reply.

"Unfortunately, they're not all back yet….although Doctor Menzie has apologised and chased them up; they were supposed to have been rushed through, but they weren't! Anyway the good news is, from the results that he has already, he believes Nigel will make a good recovery" Preston said, trying to smile.

"Oh my goodness, that's great news!" she said, secretly wishing the full results were all back, but trying to appear positive for Preston's benefit.

"So um...did you find anything in the mansion?" he asked, looking at Sydney and then at Derek, wondering if it was just a coincidence that the agent was there at the same time as her.

Sydney explained everything, including the fact that they'd found Nigel's file again and that the trail ended in the church next door.

Feeling downhearted that they didn't have better news, Preston suddenly remembered, as he took out his camera, that he had some news for them "I was um permitted to visit the twins earlier...they looked a little tired but seem to be recovering quite well...they um... even asked to see Nigel" he said, showing Sydney and Derek couple of digital photos he'd taken during the visit. "When I was with them their parents arrived...they looked so happy to see them...it was quite an emotional reunion. Naturally, they were very grateful to you Derek and, of course, to Nigel for helping their sons."

"It was Nigel that got them to freedom, not me...I just lifted them over the wall" Derek said, feeling pleased that the little boys were OK.

Noticing how modest Derek was being, Sydney smiled "the twins told me how they got out of the house Derek...but you still helped! Nigel was too sick to go any further so they'd have been caught if you'd not been there!...I'd like to see them again myself actually" Sydney said, looking rather pleased.

Looking a little thoughtful, Preston hesitated for a second "Um...there is just…well…one thing that's not so good...they're um...having psychological problems; a bit like Nigel did when he was a little boy. Apparently a counsellor visited them and discovered they'd been treated appallingly at the mansion! I don't think any of us realised just how badly they'd suffered when they were with us in the van... they seemed...well... hungry, but alright really" Preston said, looking a little uneasy.

"Do you know what happened to them?" Sydney asked, wondering nervously what he'd say.

"Um….apparently that witch, Maria, taunted them with food... but never gave them any! She also put them in a cold bath and pushed them under the water...just like she did to Nigel when he was a child! She hit them too but...but they weren't...you know...ra...raped, thank God!" Preston said very sorrowfully; memories of the younger Nigel running through his mind.

"Oh my God! That's why they reacted so strangely when Juliet Tombs and I offered them food...and when I tried to bathe them... they must have been terrified!" Sydney said, feeling quite sickened as she recalled her visit.

Just at that moment Doctor Menzie returned to give them Nigel's final test results "Hey everyone... I have some good news...Nigel's optic nerve is completely undamaged. Of course, his eyes will still be very swollen and bloodshot for a little while longer, but his eyesight will be as good as new pretty soon."

Oh thank God!" Preston said, as everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Looking a little less cheerful, but not exactly worried, the doctor then continued "of course, you know...he does have a couple of broken ribs, a broken big toe and a fractured ankle but...well...amazingly, there's no internal bleeding or anything physical that can't be fixed; I think he must be a lot stronger than he looks!"

Taking in the good news Sydney, Preston and Derek hugged each other tightly. However, as pleased as they were that Nigel would recover from his horrible injuries, they were still a little concerned about his face "do you think he'll need plastic surgery after the swelling goes down Doctor?" Sydney asked, handing him a photo of Nigel.

"Oh my goodness, he's a handsome young man!" The doctor said, looking at the picture "but no, I'm pleased to say he won't; the swelling and bruising will have completely disappeared in a few weeks...and since he's no deep cuts, there'll be no scarring. He'll have some minor scars on his torso, shoulders, butt and back, but nothing too unsightly."

Sydney was delighted, although even if he wasn't going to be as adorable as he was before, she knew she'd still love him!

Not wanting to put a damper on things, but feeling the need to be up front, Doctor Menzie asked them to sit down for a minute as he gathered his thoughts "Look although physically Nigel's going to be just fine, just like with the twins, I'm a little concerned about his state of mind. You see, during the times he's been awake, he's barely spoken a word...but there's nothing physical causing his silence. He's acting like he doesn't care about anything, particularly himself!"

Of course, all three of them secretly believed it was their fault that Nigel was behaving so oddly, which was why they so desperately wanted to see him. However, regardless of that, as the doctor was worried about Nigel's mental stability, they felt he should be made fully aware of the horrors Nigel had suffered just recently and, more importantly, in the past!

The doctor was horrified, as he knew nothing of the original abduction and had only been given brief details of what occurred at the mansion by Mr Tombs.

"Heavens above! That's just terrible!" he shouted "I thought there was a possibility he'd need some counselling when I was told that he and the twins were attacked by the same brutes...I'm definitely going arrange for a therapist to see him in a day or two."

"Doctor, before you do that...perhaps Preston, Derek and I could try talking to him; he's quite shy and doesn't always open up to strangers" Sydney said, hoping he'd agree, because she longed to talk to him.

"That's true doctor" Preston said, feeling exactly the same.

"Yeah" Derek said, nodding at the doctor, even though he was convinced Nigel would ignore him.

The doctor looked a little surprised by their responses and was about to quiz them when Sydney spoke again "Of course, we're not ruling out getting a counsellor after we've spoken to him doctor...it would just be better if one of us explained about the therapist first" she said, hoping that once they'd done that, and she'd confessed her love for him, Nigel would be happy and more responsive to everyone, including a counsellor.

"Oh I see...yes I understand now, however it'll be pointless you seeing him right now… I decided to keep him sedated. I only let Preston in to see him because he was alone and didn't mind just sitting there. Right now, sleep is the best thing for Nigel, especially since he doesn't want to talk to anyone. Look you'll be able to speak to him tomorrow…..although I'm afraid he still has those tubes attached to him, which isn't very pleasant."

"Actually, I meant to ask you about them doctor; what are they for?" Preston asked, looking quite embarrassed, as he realised he should have asked yesterday.

"Oh….they're just to keep him hydrated and as pain free as possible for a while...his ribs and neck are quite painful if he moves, you know, so he really needs to rest; that's the main reason I want him sedated" the doctor said, hoping they'd understand. They didn't speak but he could clearly see they were unhappy about the situation and that Preston was getting quite emotional "look I'm really sorry….but I have to think of Nigel first; he really needs to sleep. In fact, I think you could all do with some rest; you look exhausted! As I said, why don't you come back tomorrow, late morning…hopefully, by then, he'll have had a proper bath, rather than a quick sponge over and be in a much better frame of mind; especially if he's eaten; albeit in liquid form... OK?"

Sydney gave him a sad look "Oh...I guess so doctor, but if he asks for any of us, please call" she said, reluctantly handing over a piece of papers with hers and Preston's cell phone numbers on it "you know we're only at the Copacabana Palace; it's not far, we can be here in ten minutes if he needs us."

"Alright...now you go and get some rest; I'll see you tomorrow" the doctor said, glad they were taking his advice.

Walking back to the hotel feeling a little low, Sydney decided to call Cate to up-date her on Nigel, having already left a voicemail earlier advising what happened at the mansion.

Trying to keep up with the administration side of the case and dozens of other things, Cate was swamped with work. However, she'd made time, as soon as she got Sydney's voicemail, to interrogate Jon and Manuel, hoping they'd betray Ferreira and tell her where he was. That having failed, she was, at least, pleased hear some good news about Nigel's injuries, although she felt rather sad, yet not surprised, that he may need some counselling.

Returning to the hotel feeling really down, their thoughts intermittently drifting back to what they'd like to say to Nigel, the three of them spent the rest of the day helping Cate. Exhausted or not, they tried to piece together the information she'd already obtained from the brutes, which seemed far more important right then, than sleep.

Coming to a dead end with some of the statements and with Nigel still playing on his mind, Derek became frustrated, as just like Cate and Sydney, he was not at all used to failure. Therefore, feeling the need to do something constructive, and with paper and pen in his hand, he made his way to the police station, hoping to get some answers. As soon as he arrived he ensured that the thugs' who'd beaten him, and possibly Nigel, were separated. He then cleverly made them talk by pretending each one of them had betrayed the other; which was something he and Cate were particularly good at! Of course, once he'd provided Cate with this new information, which tied up a few loose ends, it made him feel better about himself, so he thought he be able to sleep. However, having led in his bed tossing and turning for the best part of three hours, he realised that the true cause of his insomnia was back at the hospital and that until he'd resolved the problem with Nigel, he wouldn't be able to rest peacefully.

2nd Jan

The next morning, after a late breakfast, Sydney and Preston met up with Cate and Derek to go over, once again, the information obtained during the interrogations. Having hoped that Derek and the other agents would have forced at least one thug to reveal Ferreira's whereabouts, they were all still frustrated that they hadn't.

Cate hated the lack of progress regarding that brute; however, there was something else, almost as worrying, that she'd been putting off telling everyone. Sitting in the lounge, laptop on the table, Cate took a deep breath "guys… remember that woman Nigel recognised? You know…. the one with the birth mark on her face?" Cate asked, clicking through the photographs of the female detainees on her computer.

"Yes, of course…. why?...You did catch her didn't you!?" Sydney asked, looking quite anxious.

"You know I really don't think we did, none of these photos shows a woman like that; have a look, you might recognise her; she could have turned her head so that the marks weren't visible" Cate said, twisting her laptop around towards Sydney.

Sydney clicked through the pictures twice, while Preston stood behind her checking them too "No, damn it, she's not there!" she said; feeling quite exasperated. Reaching inside her pocket she located her camera and refreshed Cate's memory of exactly what Maria looked like.

"I'm really sorry Sydney, as you can see, there's no one that comes close to that; those marks are quite distinctive….. look…. why don't you and Preston go and see Nigel now; Derek…. you too; I know you're desperate to talk to him…. I'm going back to the station to question Jon and Manuel again. I can't believe nobody knows where Ferreira, or that evil woman, are!" Cate said, sounding really annoyed yet, at the same time, trying to be considerate to Derek; particularly as, in truth, he'd probably be better at forcing the detainees to spill the beans, than she would!

"Thanks Cate!...I'll be back as soon as I can" Derek said, surprised that his boss was being so thoughtful.

"Cate…. look" Sydney said, realising how the agent must be feeling "I was at the mansion and I know you did everything possible to try and apprehend the gang...but you know what...I think the other pole in the passageway must lead to Maria's bedroom... that's how she escaped the net; just like her brother! It wasn't because you or your agents were negligent, it just couldn't be helped."

"Thanks Sydney, it's just that I'm so frustrated by the situation...they were the very reason I held off raiding for so long...you know...to make absolutely certain I'd be able to catch them!" Cate said, shaking her head and wishing really hard that things were different.

Sydney patted Cate on the back "I'll ring you to let you know how Nigel is as soon as I can. I doubt we'll be permitted to stay very long anyway….see you later" Sydney said, as she started walking in the general direction of the hospital with Derek and Preston by her side.

Having thought of what Nigel might need, Preston had packed a small bag with some pyjamas, day clothes and toiletries and then, on the way to the hospital, he bought some grapes and peaches; hoping the nurses would liquidise them, as he recalled his brother was unable to eat solids. Remembering that problem too, Sydney purchased some flowers to brighten his room and three bars of chocolate; one for Nigel, when he was able to eat and the other two for the twins.

Derek, having no clue what Nigel would like, picked up two six packs of beer, one for himself, which he put in the bottom of a bag and the other he wrapped up really well and placed on top; realising, of course, that alcohol would be banned from the hospital. His hope, however, was that in a few days time, Nigel might be in a better frame of mind to talk to him; especially if he'd had a beer or two first!

Reaching the hospital at 10.45 a.m. they all felt a little anxious as they recalled the details of the previous day. As soon as they entered the reception they looked around for someone who knew them as, obviously, for reasons of security, they couldn't just pop up and see Nigel without having some sort of escort.

Noticing Nurse Garcia, whom they'd seen with Doctor Menzie on a few occasions, Sydney called her over and explained why they were there. Having instantly recognised them and showing them where to wait, she telephoned Nurse Sanchez, who was the nurse in charge of the top floor that day, who advised she'd be down in a minute.

Arriving in reception ten minutes later, Nurse Sanchez looked a little unhappy as she greeted them "Nigel's feeling a bit down I'm afraid… I've done what I can to try and cheer him up; but it's not really working. I guess he's been through such a lot… you can go in to see him, but don't expect too much...I think he might have been crying... it's hard to tell when his eyes so swollen...he's spoken a few words though, so that's better than yesterday."

"Thanks, which room is he in?" Sydney asked, feeling really nervous but glad that he'd started to speak.

"It's Room 601, she whispered, it's a lovely room, but those flowers will make it more cheerful for him…. follow me, I'm on my way back up there now" the nurse said, walking towards the elevator.

A couple of minutes later they arrived at Nigel's room and soon got past the guard once Nurse Sanchez explained who they were. Nigel was, as they expected, still hooked up to all manner of tubes and machines and looked terribly fragile. Sydney just wanted to take him in her arms and tell him everything would be alright and that she loved him! However, the moment Nigel saw them through his swollen black eyes, as difficult as it was for him, he turned his head away!

Hoping he was just embarrassed about his appearance, Preston was the first to speak "Podge, how're you feeling old man? I've brought you some fruit...but um...just let me know if you'd like something else….anything at all, alright?"

When he didn't respond Preston felt awful, not only because it was heartbreaking to see his little brother so bruised and battered, but because he was so guilt-ridden about leaving him at the mansion and so desperate for his forgiveness. Hoping he'd get another chance to speak to Nigel, Preston moved away from the bed and let Sydney speak to him.

Kissing him on top of his head Sydney blinked away her so rarely seen tears "Hi sweetie…...you're looking much better than yesterday.…the swelling's gone down a little, I think. Hey you're soon gonna be the cutest guy in the hospital" she said, smiling lovingly at him in the hope of getting a good reaction. However, he didn't even attempt to smile, or even look at her!

Thinking, at first, the pain was just too much, she suddenly recalled the doctor's comment about pain relief. Realising then that he should be, more or less, pain free; she felt she'd been right all along...he was angry with her!

Feeling like her heart had been wrenched from her chest; she looked over at Derek, who'd now moved to the other side of the bed. Wondering then if Nigel would be cross with him too, Sydney sat down by the door and watched, hoping at least to hear Nigel speak.

Looking genuinely upset by Nigel's initial reaction, Derek tried to be as friendly as possible, although, deep down, he felt that he was the real problem! "Hey buddy….. I guess a little relic hunting mission to Outer Mongolia is out of the question, aye!? You definitely look like you've fallen out of a big tree this time!" he joked.

Nigel didn't verbally respond at all, but he did try to, unsuccessfully, turn his head away again.

"Hey…. I'm sorry! I'm sorry!...I tried to stop the bastard from hurting you, I really did!" Derek said, looking really anxious and unhappy.

Nigel still made no attempt to respond and none of them knew what to do...it was just awful!

Feeling completely convinced by then that he hated all three of them, Sydney moved back to his bedside "Sweetie, Preston and I had no choice but leave you… we were so heavily outnumbered by those thugs...once they'd grabbed you there was nothing we could do but run or be captured ourselves! We had to get away so we could rescue you! Nigel, you know I'd never deliberately let anything happen to you, you know that!" Sydney said, looking very concerned as she stared at him.

"I… I know Syd, I… don't blame you or Pre…Preston" Nigel said very quietly, obviously finding it difficult to speak.

"You don't?" Sydney said; feeling very confused.

"N…no… I was there re…remember" he said, very croakily.

Feeling very unsure if Nigel truly meant it, Preston pulled his chair closer to the bed and gently took his brother's hand "Podge, I'm so sorry… I didn't want to leave you, I really didn't….it broke my heart seeing you carried off like that… I love you; please don't hate me again…. please!"

"I do…don't ha...hate you Pres" Nigel said, trying hard to move his head to look at his brother.

Realising Nigel was being sincere, Preston felt relieved, although he knew that the guilt from leaving him at the mansion and in the car at the supermarket all those years ago, would never leave him.

Thinking about Nigel's earlier reactions, Preston became completely convinced that something other than his physical condition was deeply bothering his brother. Thinking really hard as to what it could be, it suddenly occurred to him that someone might have told him about Ferreira's escape! However, not wanting to let the cat out of the bag, if he actually didn't know, he stroked Nigel's head and looked into his swollen and very sad face "Podge, if you're not angry with Sydney or me, please tell me what's wrong! I know you've been though a terrible time, but you're safe now, tell me what it is….please!"

Nigel touched Preston's hand, gently patted it and then looked over at Derek who'd been watching him and Preston very intently.

"Pres; le… leave it… f…for now…. please" Nigel said, his voice almost inaudible. Preston's heart almost broke as he realised Nigel was suffering some awful mental anguish which he was finding too difficult to express.

"Is it me Nigel? Are you mad at me?" Derek suddenly blurted out, looking at him from the end of the bed.

"No" Nigel replied very quietly, trying to look away.

Derek moved closer by gently pushing Preston out of the way so that he could look his friend in the face "if you're not angry with me, then what's up? Tell me...I need to know!"

Nigel didn't reply, although he looked like he was about to, causing Derek to believe, even more so, that he was the cause of the problem "Nigel…. look I'm sorry; I guess if I'd have been more alert they'd never have taken us by surprise like that...but like I said, I really tried to stop the brute from hurting you….I guess I just didn't try hard enough!"

Nigel still kept silent, but he was unable to prevent a couple of tears seeping through his painful, almost closed, eyes.

Trying not to be outwardly affected by Nigel's show of emotion, Derek felt compelled to continue "You put up an amazing fight buddy; Manuel's probably speaking in a very high pitched voice right now!"

"Yes Der… Derek, I fo….fought him th...then, b…but if it was y….you, you'd have ki….killed him the f...first time... you w...wouldn't have let him try ag….again!" Nigel said, unable to stop the tears from running down his bruised face.

"Oh my God! Is that it, is that why you're so distraught!" Preston blurted out, as he suddenly realised that the brutal disgusting assault they'd witnessed during the raid, wasn't the first of its kind "but Podge…how on earth do you think you could have defended yourself against a brute like that?" he asked, pushing in front of Derek to wipe his brother's sore eyes and wondering how far the brute had actually gotten! "Did you know he'd been assaulted like that before, Derek?"

"No! Not like that anyway!" the agent replied, feeling deeply shocked "You should've told me buddy; I'd have thought of something to prevent it!" Derek said, wondering, like Preston, if Manuel had completed the awful deed at any time.

"Yes Nige...you should have told Derek what was happening to you…if he'd known, he'd have kicked Manuel's penis until it bled! I know he would!" Sydney said, feeling very distressed but not feeling she could ask him for details "Derek did everything he could to try and stop him that last time sweetie... we all heard what went on!" She took Nigel's hand and pressed it to her face "I guess it all happened in the basement...but I bet you still put up a good fight."

Nigel didn't reply and tried to turn away from her.

"Hey bud, see these" Derek said, pointing to his large biceps "if Manuel tried to do that to me, you're right, I'd have killed him; but you're not me…. you're Nigel Bailey! You're simply not equipped to prevent a man that size from doing whatever he wants; but look...in everyone's eyes, including mine, you're a hero and a damn brave one at that! Jeez! I can't believe you're bothered about what we think of the way you defended yourself! Look, no matter what you think, I've never thought of you as a coward… not ever! I know I kidded around a lot, but only because you're so naïve and gullible… the fact is, you always do what needs to be done, even jumping out of planes! You're the one who saved the twins, it wasn't me Nigel! By the way, they're in this hospital right now and they're doing fine. Honestly, you're, quite frankly, amazing little guy; most people wouldn't be capable of doing half the things you do!" Derek said, smiling widely believing, basically, he'd discovered Nigel's problem.

"Tha….thanks Derek" Nigel said, feeling a little better but still trying to turn away.

"Nige, it's not just what Manuel did that's bothering you…is it? Or the fact that you couldn't defend yourself against him" Sydney said, taking his hand again and looking a little suspicious "Look...do you want to talk to one of us alone about it? Would that help?"

"You Syd" Nigel said, trying to turn his head towards Preston and Derek to see if they'd mind.

Realising that what Nigel had to say was going to be difficult for him, not only because his speech was so slurred but because something was, obviously, troubling him deeply...Derek grabbed hold of Preston's arm and led him out to the corridor.

Sydney had seen Nigel badly hurt several times whilst on relic hunts and he'd always coped well with the pain, and recovered quite quickly, never once holding a grudge against her for being unable to protect him. However, this time, having taken so long to rescue him and because he might have been raped again, she was terrified that, even if he didn't hate her, he'd lost his faith in her and was going to resign!

Wow...this was a really difficult chapter for me, so I hope you enjoyed it! Thanks to everyone who reviewed.
