I don't own Young Justice. Sorry!
I reached the prison and looked around. The rest of the team were there, well everyone except Robin, who had called the team and told them he was on his way.
"There's a gang in Black Gate. They are taking out the guards as they go through but we don't know what they want." Kaldur said.
"Could it be a breakout?" Artemis suggested.
"Most likely." Robin said, swinging in and landing beside me. "How you doing, bro?"
"You're in a good mood." I said.
"So are you."
"I just told someone very close to me about what I do." I smirked.
"You didn't?" Robin exclaimed and we bro-fisted. "Congrats KF."
"If you two are quite done." Kaldur droned, knowing that me and Robin could celebrate the news for hours if we wanted to.
"Yeah, sorry." Robin apologised. "So what's the plan?"
"We split into teams. One of us will go up to the security booth. I think it should be KF."
"What? Why?"
"The corridors of Black Gate are like a maze. They are also very narrow. It will be almost impossible and extremely dangerous for you to use your powers." Kaldur said.
"Shouldn't Rob be in the booth? He will be constantly in danger throughout the whole mission."
Artemis shook her head.
"KF, I think you should just get up to the booth. Use that big mouth of yours to warn us of danger."
.
I super sped up to the booth and watched as the group separated out. Kaldur and Superboy took the bottoms floors, Robin and Artemis the top ones and M'gann was keeping an eye on the doors to make sure the gang can't leave.
Robin nodded up at the camera as he walked down the corridor. He was completely alone but he seemed pretty at home. He smirked.
Jealous much? he telepathically queried.
You have no idea. I'm so bored.
I wanted to be out there, helping them.
Robin pointed towards a door at the end of the corridor.
What's through there?
I looked over the plans and told him that it was another cell block. I read through the list of offenders in that section. One name stood out to me.
Zucco is in there.
Could he be the person the gang is trying to break out?
Possibly. I'll see if anyone has gone in recently.
Robin started to move towards the door as I used a different computer screen to scroll through the other cameras.
What are you doing? I mentally screamed at Robin.
As a reaction, Robin winced and glared up at the camera.
While you check, I'm going to check in person. If Zucco is out then...
When one of the bats threatens you then you know that they won't do it or, if they do, it won't be as bad as what they can do. If they don't say it, if they fall silent mid sentence or just do it without a word, then you know you should worry. It means they have thought of something purely horrific and they don't even want to give anyone time to prepare for it.
Robin!
Robin's hand pressed down on the handle and I raced to bring up the CCTV of the other room, in hope of finding it empty. It wasn't. Robin was greeted by four men and the big boss himself – Zucco. Zucco smiled.
"I was hoping it would be you we found first, Robin. Makes the whole thing easier."
"What?" I breathed as Robin anchored himself into a defensive position.
Then I remembered which hero Zucco had been after through this whole thing: Robin.
Zucco's four men attacked. I had no doubt that Robin could take them. I had seen him take bigger groups. Robin smiled as the men surrounded him.
Then some sort of trap was sprung. Zucco clicked his fingers and the men slipped on a set of gas masks, even Zucco put one on.
"Do you remember when I owned this city, birdie? Some of the guards I owned back then still work here. It was easy to convince them to set up gas canisters in the vents all over the prison."
Robin, put on you gas mask! Your re-breather! I begged.
Robin reached towards his belt as gas began to fill the corridor. The gas had a light colour but it was thick and I just managed to see Robin slip on his re-breather before the camera's view was shrouded by the gas. I could hear the sounds of grunts, yelps and shouts but I couldn't tell who they were coming from of who was winning the fight. I wanted to rush in there but I had no mask to stop the gas and I would just end up being another burden on Robin. There was nothing I could do without Robin's technical wizardry. I just had to hope it was Robin who was going to come out on top.
My hope faded when Robin's re-breather was thrown into the air, close enough for the camera to see it. That was when the coughing started. I could hear my best friend attempting and struggling to breathe.
"Grab the brat!" Zucco ordered.
Slowly the coughing slowed and then silenced. I listened in dread.
"Clear the air." Zucco's barked orders crackled over the speakers.
I watched as the vents slowly sucked in the gas, revealing an unconscious Robin lying on the floor, surrounded by Zucco and his men. I could see my friends chest slowly rising and falling, telling me he was still alive at least. Zucco kicked Robin's limp form and pulled his own gas mask away.
"Come on, the others should be waiting outside." Zucco growled.
Two of the guys began to drag Robin with them and I couldn't take it any more. I had to rescue my friend. I faced from the room on a mission to find Zucco.
.
Zucco's got Robin. I informed the others. I'm going after them.
Zucco!
Yeah, he gassed our boy wonder and now is running off with him. M'gann, can you help me find them?
I'll work on it. M'gann replied telepathically.
I raced down corridor after corridor, a blur to anyone I passed. I couldn't find Robin. I had checked where the fight had taken place but I couldn't find either of them. I tried to think of where they might have gone, running it all through my head.
Zucco said they were heading outside but there are loads of ways of getting to the door from here. Do I have to check every one? I thought desperately.
I zipped down the first corridor but there was no one there. The next one took me through a block of cells. I slowed because the break out and the sounds of fights had made the other criminals violent. I considered doing something to calm them down but then I considered what Zucco might be intending for Robin.
I continued on but still nothing. Suddenly I realised how stupid I had been to make M'gann move away from the door. The men could already have gone with Robin.
The final way I tried had a series of men down it. They didn't have Robin with them so I sipped past, but not very far because I saw Robin being dragged by two men the next corridor down. It was only two men, easy for me to deal with.
"Fellas, I think you'll be staying here for a lot longer than you intended." I quipped, getting their attention.
The two men looked at me and then the boy they were dragging and realised that we had to be friends.
"If you let Robin go, I might not set Batman on you." I told them.
They didn't release Robin so I mental a mental note of their faces so I could point them out to Batman later.
That was when something hard hit against my head from behind. I stumbled forward and hit the ground. Glancing backwards, I saw the men I had raced past standing there.
"Does the boss want another kid hero to add to his collection?" one of the men who had knocked me down asked.
"Just wants the Bat's brat. Knock the other one out and..."
I had been going to react, fight back, but I had expected the blow to come from a different man and there was nothing I could do. The two men holding Robin had already started to leave as I blacked out.
.
I woke up to see Artemis standing over me. Instead of gently helping me to my feet. She kick me in the side. I could tell she was still angry over me leaving her for Diana.
"They've taken Robin." I groaned, rolling over and then getting up.
"What happened?" Superboy demanded, rushing down the corridor with Kaldur and M'gann following him.
"He was just grabbed. I tried to go after him but... They knocked me out and now he's gone."
"KF, we'll find him." M'gann assured me but I still felt a sick feeling in my stomach.
"We better go and tell Batman." Kaldur said.
"I need to make a phone call." I told them.
.
I rushed off to a street in Gotham where I could be alone and pulled out my phone. I put my phone to my ear after dialling Diana. Since I had just told her who I was, I knew she would understand. She would be able to talk through everything with me. However her phone drifted to answer phone. I sighed and hung up. I guessed she would be asleep given the time. It could wait until morning.
.
As soon as it was an acceptable time in the morning. I rushed over to Wayne Manor. I had been out all night hunting down for Zucco but I couldn't find him of Robin. I knocked on the door of the Manor and it was opened by Alfred.
"Hey, Alfred. I'm here to see Diana."
"I'm afraid that Miss Diana is not here."
"Let him in, Alfred." a voice called.
"Are you sure Master Bruce will agree?" Alfred asked.
"I don't think we have much of a choice." the voice said.
I was let in and looked at Barbara.
"Wally, come with me." Barbara said, leading me through the manor.
.
I followed her loyally. At first we walked silently. Barbara didn't even look back at me at first but, when she did, she looked at me with pity in her eyes.
"I don't agree with what Diana did but I'm not showing you this because of that. I'm showing you this because you need to know about it. It should explain everything, why she's not here, why Zucco had such an interest in Robin..."
She looked towards the door in front of us. She frowned and opened it. The door was completely unmarked; a normal person would pass it without giving it a second glance. I looked inside.
"She had to keep it from Bruce. If she had put this anywhere else, he would have found it and she doesn't like to worry him. It's a bit late for that..."
I walked inside. The room looked exactly like a bedroom but the place was littered with pictures and books and letters. I walked over to the desk and looked at the books. They were all history books, all open to the pages on Joan or Arc. Every picture of the historical woman had been drawn on. A domino mask was drawn around her eyes and a small 'R' in a circle was on her chest.
"Why would she do these?" I asked.
"She didn't, they were sent to her like this."
"But..."
"Just like Joan of Arc." she murmured. "It was simply telling Diana that they knew."
I knew what she was implying but I couldn't comprehend it. Maybe it was as simple as I didn't want to comprehend it.
"Knew what?" I asked in denial.
"Who else has stuff like this?" Barbara asked, pointing at all the books.
"Robin." I answered before I even considered that it might give my secret identity away.
"And what is Joan of Arc famous for?"
"Dressing up as a guy to fight the English."
"Dressing up as a guy to fight for what she believed in." Barbara corrected. "Diana did that. She dressed up as a boy so she could fight crime. Diana is Robin."
Wow, look at that! Diana didn't even tell Wally. It was Barbara.
