Chapter 21
Used to be a diamond
You would pan for me
Used to brag about it all the time
"Bella, there's a call for you on Line 2, it's a Dr. Uley."
I hesitated.
I thought about it for a half a second.
Nope. Not today. I am not fucking interested.
"Please tell him that I've already stepped out for lunch and to take a message." I tell Jane, grabbing my purse and jacket. It's 11:45 a.m. but I'll just go ahead and take my lunch right now. It makes me honest, and I could use a break. While P.J. was a delightful little surprise to my day, I could still do with a mood booster.
I ride the elevator down and take out my phone.
Where are you right now babe?
Immediately I get a reply:
Home.
Fantastic.
Don't move.
I flag a cab and give him the address.
Why, what's going on? Are you okay?
I smirk a little to myself. Oh yeah, I'm going to be just fine in about 15 minutes.
"Yes." I breathe.
Edward slides his hands from the backs of my knees up to hitch my hips higher. Then he swirls his tongue before taking a long slow lick from clit to ass. Two fingers push all the way into my core and I fly apart.
I grip my own hair and writhe on his couch.
"Edward!" I don't know where this voice is coming from, but it's needy and blissful and oh so happy to be right where I am.
"More?" He looks at me over his eyelashes and kisses his way up my torso.
"Always more." I grip his waist. He pushes inside of me.
"I love you. Fuck," he grinds and sucks a spot behind my left ear. "You want this?"
He pulls back and slowly slides back in.
"Want a quick fuck for lunch?" he whispers naughtily.
"No…" I arch my back, it's been so long since we've been together like this, too, too long.
"No?" He pauses.
"No, I want a long fuck with you…need you." I barely get the words out.
He groans and pulls me up so that I'm sitting on top of him, straddling his hips.
"Fuck me then, as long and as hard as you need."
He pulls a nipple into his mouth and I can feel another orgasm building lightening fast.
"Love you…." I feel half crazed. "Love your cock."
"Oh shit, you're going to make me come too fast if you say things like that." He stills me at the waist to collect himself.
I tilt my head and look down at him with my hair tousled, and my eyes half-lidded.
I circle my hips slowly.
"You like it when I tell you how much I love your dick?" I whisper. "How I think about licking it, sucking you in my mouth."
"Bella-" His face is strained, and I see sweat pop out on his forehead, and slide down his chiseled cheekbone.
I slide my tongue up and lick it off. His eyes fly open and I tip my head back so he can see me swallow his flavor.
"I want my legs wrapped around you everyday, I want to feel your cock inside me, I want to ride you while you bite my nipples and finger my ass."
"Fuck! Bella!" Edward loses control and pumps into me with all that he has.
I come again as he hits that perfect spot inside me.
"What the fuck baby, what the fuck? Where did that come from?" He kisses me deeply, but is gentle around my still injured lip, and swipes his tongue inside my mouth. I still taste a little of myself along with his addictive flavor.
"It's the truth." I smile, and bury my face in his neck. He rubs my back soothingly, and I'm so thankful for him and this amazing connection that we have. That I could tell him something so intensely personal and revealing.
"Is it okay?" I can't help but ask.
"Okay?" he chokes out. "It's going to be my new favorite thing to jerk off to when you're not around."
Yeah, I'm thankful.
"I love you." I whisper.
"Not as much as I love you, sweetheart." He holds me so tight. "Are you alright?"
I nod against him.
"You sure? You came in and ripped both our clothes off before I could even ask what was going on."
"I'm okay, really, I just … had a call at work that reminded me. I'm not who I used to be and I don't have to pretend anymore."
Edward is silent, and then he lifts me off of him and rolls us both to our sides and pulls the afghan on the back of the couch over us.
"Want to explain that?" He cups my face.
I smile lightly, and touch my forehead to his.
"Dr. Uley called me at work today-"
Edward shoots up, but I pull him back.
"I didn't take it." I tell him. "I told Jane to take a message and I came here to you. That's the point. I would have felt obligated to take his call before. To be polite, do the right thing and hear what he had to say, but I don't feel that way anymore. I don't want to talk to him, because I know whatever he has to say, it's going to be in defense of Jacob, and he's indefensible. So screw him, I'm going to go see my man, and screw him instead." I quirk my eyebrow at Edward, whose muscles finally relax.
"Yeah, okay, I get it." He tells me.
"I needed you, and you were right here for me, gave me what I wanted, just how I wanted it, and didn't even blink. That's a big damn deal, baby. Thank you."
He laughs and pulls me in tight.
"Don't you dare thank me for giving me the best part of my day."
I grin at him.
"I wouldn't say the best, we still have tonight." I lick his bottom lip.
I carry a coffee for myself as well as Jane when I walk back into my office. I already ate the scone that I bought with the coffee on the way in.
"Hey lady, I brought you a Mocha latte with cinnamon on top." I set it down on her desk as she looks up from her computer in surprise.
"What? Thank you!" She grabs it and takes a sip. "It's perfect, how did you know what I drink?"
"I saw you bring one in last week. Glad you like it. I'll here for a few hours before my meeting with Dave down in printing at 3:45, so if you haven't gotten away from your desk since I left, go take a walk if you want."
"A walk…?" She looks flummoxed.
"You know, legs moving, lungs breathing in fresh air, head clearing; that kind of thing." I tease her as I shrug out of my jacket and hang it on the back of my door.
"But….you just got here, don't you want me to …assist you…" Again, she seems absolutely puzzled.
I love this girl.
"I got it for at least 30 minutes. Take a break. I was an assistant not too long ago. I remember needing a gulp of outside air every now and then, plus, you've been doing such a great job for me, which I know hasn't been easy. My schedule has been nuts since I've been gone out of the office so much. I really appreciate how you've taken care of everything here. So go. Go." I smile and wave my fingers at her as I walk into my office and sit down at my desk.
It takes about two minutes for Jane to fully grasp that I have, in fact, told her to go take a break in the middle of the afternoon, but she finally gets up and leaves with her coffee.
I smile after she's gone and start going through my messages. Angela wants to set up a lunch meeting sometime this week and it states that it has nothing to do with work, but all to do with a friendly catch up.
Esme called as well, but there's no message, just a note to call her at her desk when I'm able.
And then there's a message from Dr. Uley. It says to call his office as soon as possible to discuss a personal matter that is of grave importance.
Yeah freaking right. Grave importance, I bet. Jacob is of no importance and I don't need to hear about how I should drop the restraining order and assault charges because they could damage his future. Don't fucking start with me, I seethe, like my future, my life has no importance compared to Jacob's.
Screw you Dr. Uley.
I really wish Carlisle wasn't in practice with that chauvinistic douche canoe.
I also really wish I didn't feel compelled to return his call. I'd really love nothing more than to blow off the message and then forget about it, however, I know me, and it will just eat at me.
I can still be smart about this though right?
I place a call to Officer Murphy, who is currently in court, but will call me a soon as she can.
In the meantime, I do as I said I would to Jane. I cover my own desk and everything is remarkably calm. Jane comes dashing in about 25 minutes later with a look of extreme guilt on her face.
"Did I take too long? Everything okay?" She hurriedly looks over her desk for messages and starts clicking through her computer to see if she's missed any emails.
"Janey," I smile at her. "Relax, you were barely gone. Everything is fine."
I'm about to switch the incoming call line back to her phone when mine rings. She starts forward to answer, but I wave my hand and pick up the receiver.
"Bella Swan's office."
"I demand to talk to Ms. Swan right fucking now."
I know that voice. Oh yeah, do I know it. That is Dr. Uley. I give Jane a reassuring smile and she nods before closing the door behind her as she leaves.
"I'm sorry, could you give the nature of your call please, sir." I ask. I am definitely not taking this call as myself right now. No freaking way.
"It is of a personal, but urgent matter, as I stated when I called this morning. This is Dr. Cameron Uley. Again. What kind of idiot are you that you can't even take a simple message. I specifically said that I needed to be contacted immediately. Are you lazy or stupid, girl?"
Oh, oh hell no.
I cleared my throat.
"Neither. Your message was delivered as you so politely requested, however, you did not take precedence in Ms. Swan's schedule. Now, I am happy to notify her of your call, but she is currently with a client, so again, you will have to wait for her to contact you. Have a nice day, Mr. Uley."
I hung up with a soft click. Oh, yeah, I called him 'Mr.' instead of 'Dr.', because he's one of those jerks that needs everyone to know how important he is by his title. Was that petty of me, absolutely.
I'm good with petty.
I take a breath and open my office door to find Jane working at her desk.
"Jane, when you took Dr. Uley's message this morning, was he rude to you?"
"Um." Jane's face showed that she was quickly trying to decide how to answer that.
"The truth please. Always the truth." I said gently.
"Yes. He was pretty rude."
"I see." I purse my lips and sigh. "I'm sorry about that. Next time he calls, please send him straight to my line, even if I'm in a meeting. I will explain to him that you are not here to take his or anyone's else's abuse, and if he cannot speak to you more respectfully, you have my permission to just hang up."
Jane sits there in stunned silence.
"O-okay. I don't mind, I mean, I mind, but I'm fine, I don't want Baker to lose business because of me."
"Oh no, he's not an author, or client in any capacity. Unfortunately, he is contacting me over a personal matter, so please do not feel obligated to silently suffer through his inability to show human decency."
"Alright, Bella, if you're sure."
"Quite sure."
I turn back to my office as the phone rings again. I look at Jane and again wave her off because it's still going straight to my desk.
This time its Officer Murphy. I explain the nuisance that is Dr. Uley and she suggests coming down to the station so that they can record the conversation when I call back in case he happens to say anything incriminating towards Jacob.
I look at my watch. I still have my 3:45 meeting with Dave, but after that, I can get to the precinct. I make plans to do that and we hang up.
I finish a few odds and ends before heading to the basement where the printing advisors are. Dave has a few questions about font and text size for Jessica's reprint that we're doing.
By 4:10, I'm back up to my office to grab my things and head over to see Murphy. The bullpen smells like human bodies and weird coffee. I weave my way through shrilling phones and metal desks from the 1960's, to where Wilson is typing in the back corner.
"Corner office?" I smirk at her. She rolls her eyes and finishes a sentence on her computer before saving the document.
"Yeah, the view is spectacular." She quirks her mouth while pointing her chin at a prostitute flirting with a young officer as he books her. The poor kid's ears are so red, they might as well be purple.
"What's she saying to him?" I ask because all I can hear is the din of chairs scraping, phones ringing, and people talking.
Murphy snorts. "Uh, she's telling him all the ways that she would reward him if he doesn't book her. I got to hand it to him, he's blushing like a new bride, but he hasn't given in, and a few of her offers sound…..unique."
"Yikes." I scrunch my nose and am now thankful I can't hear the details.
"Alright, so you ready to give Dr. Uley a call?" Murphy stands and starts leading me down a side hall into a room with windows.
"Yep, let's get this over with."
"Okay, Tracey here is going to run the recorder. You just have to call and talk to him like you normally would. We're going to hope he gives us something good, but if he doesn't, he doesn't."
"Sounds good."
"Dial whenever you're ready."
I look at Tracey, who is a petite little blonde with a great pixie haircut. She nods encouragingly at me, and I pick up the phone. I dial the number on the yellow slip of paper Jane left for me and wait while it rings.
"Dr. Uley's office, this is Sharon."
"Hello, this is Bella Swan, I am returning a call from Dr. Uley." I stare at the closed blinds at the window in the room and pretend that I am by myself.
"Of course!" Sharon sounds relieved. "Dr. Uley is just finishing with a patient if you'll give him one moment."
"Sure."
I glance at Murphy, who is nodding, and we all wait in silence for the Great and Powerful Uley to get on the phone.
"Bella!" Dr. Uley's voice booms through the speaker. "Thank you for getting back to me!"
He sounds completely different from the pompous ass who I spoke with earlier.
"Of course, I'm sorry that my schedule didn't permit me to call you sooner." I tell him rolling my eyes.
"Oh, well, things get hectic, that's certainly understandable. You know, as a doctor, I constantly have to adjust as problems or variables arise at work."
"Sure," I agree.
"Yes, and you, have to adapt in what you do…at your job."
It's clear he has little to zero idea what I do.
"Is there something I can do for you, Dr. Uley?" I point blank ask.
"As a matter of fact there is, and it has a little to do with what I was just saying about adjusting, and making decisions to deal with issues as they arrive."
"Uh huh."
"I would like to speak with you about Jacob and this, well, this mess of things. Could I meet you for dinner or even coffee, just get this all cleared up so we can move on; everyone of us."
"I'm sorry, Dr. Uley. I'm confused, what do you have to do with this 'mess of things'?" I try to sound less annoyed than I am and more genuinely confused.
"That's a great question."
I roll my eyes again at his condescension.
"I'm a neutral party, Bella, and I really do think that once we've all gotten together and cleared the air, said our piece as it were, we could forget this little trifle ever was."
I pause for a brief moment.
"You do realize that Jacob has stalked me, sent me aggressive letters, attacked me physically, and quite possibly tampered with my car so that I was injured, don't you Dr. Uley?" I ask trying to stay calm.
"Well, now, allegedly- "
"No, not allegedly, I was right there when he hit me, I was right there when he grabbed me, yelled in my face in a night club, when he left notes, and when my brakes did not work properly. Do not tell me he didn't do those things." My voice rises slightly, and I can see Murphy giving me a staying gesture.
"Now you listen missy, Jacob has a bright, bright future ahead of him, and he does not deserve to lose it because he chose to make time with you, do you understand, he could lose everything he's worked for and even go to prison unless you do the right thing and drop these charges and close this case."
"I won't do that." I tell him stonily. It's the best I can do for calm.
"Do you understand what I could do to you, to your job, to a certain new boyfriend and his father's job?"
The implication hangs in the air.
"What could you do? What could you possibly do, Dr. Uley?" For once in my life, I can say that I am truly flabbergasted by this man's hubris.
"I could make things very difficult, my reach goes much further than you realize, and Carlisle, he's already gone. He just doesn't know it yet." Cameron Uley sounds very confident.
However, he also doesn't realize he's being recorded by the Seattle Police Department. I look at Wilson who is lit up like Christmas.
"Dr. Uley," I go for the gold. "If I make sure this all ends today, would you at least tell me that I'm not wrong about my car? That Jacob did in fact cut my brake lines?"
"Bella, what do you think? You are a very annoying problem that just won't seem to go away, what do you think the easiest thing to do with you was?"
That insane egomaniac smug son of a bitch!
"Well, thank you for clearing that up. I'll see that I talk to the police today."
"I'm glad to see you're doing the correct thing, Jacob really is a good boy, a bit impulsive and hot-headed, but a strong character. He'll make a good doctor, and you're smart enough to allow him to do that."
I shake my head at it all.
"Right, well I do need to go."
"Of course, good bye Bella."
I hang up and wait for Tracey to give us the all clear sign.
"Hell fucking yes, motherfuckers!" Murphy whoops and clenches her fists in the air. "I'm going to take them all down! Did you hear that, did you hear him? Jacob is going down! And Dr. Uley just signed his own fate too!
I cross my arms and smile at her, she's so happy, she's practically giddy.
"So you got everything you needed?" I ask grinning.
"Oh yeah, he didn't out and out confess, but the implication that he knew Jacob had done all those things, as well as his threat to blackmail you to drop the charges; it's great! I'm so going to cook his goose. Okay, the prosecutor is going to cook his goose, but I'm going to hand it over basted and ready to roast!"
I laugh, as does Tracey.
"Nice job, Ms. Swan." She tells me.
"Thanks Tracey, and thanks Murphy, for sticking with me and getting this taken care of, I really…well, yeah, thank you."
"That's my job, and I'm happy to do it, I love getting the bad guys!"
I get home that evening freaking thrilled that the day is over. It was a good day, but a long, tiring one too. I want a long soak in the tub, with a big glass of wine, and if Edward could join me for all of that, I wouldn't be opposed. However, I know that is not going to happen because, he is working late tonight.
Alice and Jasper are here though. And that's okay too, I haven't really gotten to hang out with them like we used to in a very long time.
"Perfect, you're here." Jasper tells me as I drop my bag and keys by the door.
"Yes, Bella, we're deciding on a movie, The Notebook or Last of the Mohicans?" Alice is sitting at the bar while Jasper heaps pasta and meatballs on a platter.
"Ugh, Alice, Last of the Mohicans, always and forever, Last of the Mohicans!" I step out of my heels and my feet sigh in relief.
"Yes, yes, yes! I love you Bella, thank you!" Jasper yells while doing some kind of victory dance in the kitchen.
"No! What? You're supposed to be my best friend, how could you betray me?" Alice pouts.
"Babe, you know I can't do The Notebook, maybe ever again, you made me watch that with you every night for the first two months it was on DVD when we were in high school. If I hear the line, 'if you're a bird, I'm a bird' one more time, I'll straight vomit."
"That is very dramatic." Alice side-eyes me.
"It's your fault." I hold my hands up in defense. "I'm going to take a quick shower because I need some of those meatballs in my very near future." I inhale the spicy beef scent and my mouth waters.
I walk down the hall to grab some underwear and lounge clothes when I hear a scream from the living room.
My heart drops into my stomach as I run back. I lean against the wall clutching my chest as I stare at Alice standing over Jasper who is on one knee with a ring box open in his hand.
"Yes, oh yes, yes YES!" Alice keeps repeating like a mantra. She puts the ring on her left hand and then holds it out to admire before throwing her arms around Jasper and clobbering him to the floor. He's laughing like a loon and I figure I can forgive her for scaring the freaking crap out of me because she's so unbelievably happy.
"I'm getting married!" She screeches at me, scrambling to her feet and jumping on me too.
"I know, I saw you crazy girl!" I laugh as we tumble down.
"We're getting married!" Jasper jokingly imitates Alice's voice and jumps on top of both of us. It's a wild tangle of three idiots, but I don't care, I'm so thrilled for my friends.
"I'm so happy for you guys, I love you both so much." I tell them, squeezing them in our group hug.
"We love you too! I have to call my mother!" Alice jumps up and runs for her cell phone.
"Are you ready for her for the rest of your life?" I ask turning my head to look at Jasper, who is staring after Alice.
"Oh yeah, so fucking ready." He replies.
Jasper tells us that he jumped the gun and was going to propose this weekend at a cabin he'd rented near Carson Ridge, but the ring was burning a hole in his pocket and he couldn't wait any longer and so he asked Alice to marry him over pasta and meatballs instead.
However, Jasper still had the cabin and he invited Edward and me to join him and Alice in the celebration of the their engagement with a weekend getaway.
"Dude," I told him. "No. This is your time with Alice to do couple things. Sexy couple things. You do not want us there." I said before we all went to bed that night. We were standing in the hallway, me in my door way and Jasper in Alice's while she brushed her teeth in the bathroom.
"We'll do sexy couple things tonight, and this weekend too, unless you two planned on bunking in our room." Jasper laughed.
I tried not to dwell too hard on what was going to be happening a few dozen feet away from me tonight and instead focused on this weekend.
"Alice," I called, "Don't you want to be alone with your fiancée?"
"I plan on being alone with my fiancée, and the cabin Jasper got is huge! It's off season, so we got a two story with three bedrooms, there will be plenty of room, and assuming no one plans on making meals naked, it'll will be fine, and great, and I'm so happy, I want everyone to celebrate with me! I'm going to be Mrs. Whitlock!" She said all this over a mouthful of toothpaste, and punctuated it with an impressive spit.
"Alright," I conceded. "I'll talk to Edward, but feel free to back out at anytime before we leave. I fully understand if you guys want to be alone."
"Alone is for losers! We're going to party like it's 1999!" Jasper gave a war whoop and hauled Alice up in a fireman's hold when she stepped out of the bathroom.
She laughed like a mad woman, and the noise level only mildly receded when the door slammed shut and they, I'm guessing, proceeded with the sexy couple time.
I shook my head, but snorted with laughter too. I really loved them.
I closed my door and turned on my laptop to ambient night sounds in hopes of drowning out any unwanted noises that might come from across the hall.
Immediately, I dialed Edward's phone and waited for him to pick up.
"Hey sweetheart, everything okay?" Edward's velvet voice came through the speaker along with the background chatter of the bar.
"It is definitely okay, I've got good news, and great news, which do you want first?" I sat cross-legged on my bed in a pair of navy blue yoga pants and a grey t-shirt that said 'It was me; I let the dogs out.'
"I'll take good news first please." He sounded amused.
I told him about the phone call to Dr. Uley today, as well as what he said about Carlisle's job, which that part sucked, but how it probably wouldn't even come to fruition because Officer Wilson thinks she's got everything she needs to take care of both Jacob and Dr. Uley.
"That's amazing! Baby, that's so great, how could you have news better than that?" He exclaims.
"Well, the best news is that Alice and Jasper are getting married, and we are invited to celebrate with them this weekend at a cabin that Jasper rented. Do you think you'd be interested? We could leave late afternoon/early evening tomorrow and come back Sunday night."
"Wow, they're engaged, that's huge, um, yeah, I think I can swing this weekend, let me make sure everything here is taken care of, but I can give you a definite answer when I come by tonight. Is that okay?" Edward already sounds like he's mentally figuring out all the logistics.
"Of course. That's totally fine. Listen, I'll let you go, I know you're busy. Can't wait to see you and pick up where we left off earlier." I tell him, smiling.
"Oh yeah, what are we going to do?" His voice lowers a register.
"It may involve a Norwegian goat." I say.
"I'll bring the lube," he replies without missing a beat. "And the Michael Bolton cd."
