Rizzoli & Isles:
Chapter 21
"TGIF (Thank God, It's Friday)"
A/N: Woo, this chapter took FOREVER. Rewrites – 7 or 8, Proof read – 2. I would consider this 2 Chapters-in-1. So, enjoy.
Also, this chapter continues on where the previous chapter left off, with Jane heading to Maura's house for dinner…
MAURA'S HOUSE – DAWN (Monday)
Jane goes walking up towards the front door, carrying a small round birthday cake on top of a pizza box.
Jane softly knocks on Maura's front door, secretly hoping that Maura doesn't answer it. She doesn't want Maura to see the birthday cake that she got for her; since it's still a surprise.
The door opens, and it's James behind it. Looking quite surprised to see Jane there.
JANE: (Smiles) "Hey, Jamie."
James just says hi back, unenthusiastically; and goes back to playing on his portable PSP, that he has in his hand. Jane follows him into the house, as he makes his way into the living room, and plumps down on the couch.
JANE: (Wary) "Hey, James? Is your mother around?"
Jane asks as she makes her way to Maura's kitchen.
JAMES: "She's in her office."
JANE: "Ah."
Jane heads straight into the kitchen with the food.
Jane sets the pizza box down on the kitchen island, and takes the birthday cake, and places it inside the fridge. Trying to hide it in the back of the fridge, behind everything else in there, hoping for it not to be seen.
JANE: (To herself) "Okay."
Jane closes the refrigerator door, and leaves the kitchen. She heads back to James in the living room. She finds him still engulfed with his video game.
JANE: "So, do you want some pizza?"
James puts his PSP down on the couch, and answers an exciting, 'yeah' to Jane. He leaps off the couch and heads straight into the kitchen to serve himself. Which leaves Jane baffled.
JANE: "Wh-what about your mom? Are you going to—"
JAMES: (Shouts) "MOM! JANE'S HERE!"
James shouts out, as he's heading towards the kitchen. Which startled Jane.
JANE: (Under her breath) "Okay. That's one way of doing it."
Maura appears in the room shortly after, looking cheerful and happy to see Jane.
MAURA: "Jane."
JANE: (Smiles back) "Hey, Maura. I brought pizza…"
Just then, James makes an appearance into the living room. He's carrying a plate with two pizza slices, and a glass of punch in the other hand. He just walks right by, in-between them, as he's making his way to the couch.
MAURA: (To James, Sternly) "James Isles."
James looks up at his mother, questioningly. He knows he's in trouble for something. Every time, he hears his mother use his last name at him, he knows he's about to be scolded for something.
And all that Maura does, is tilt her head towards the dining table, and he knows what that means.
JAMES: (Scoffs and whines) "Fine."
James heads over towards the dining room table, and sits down at his designated seat; where he proceeds to eat his dinner.
Jane just looks at this interaction in amazement. James never acted this way, when he was with her. She found James' behavior a bit intriguing now. Is he always like this? Jane wondered, Or is he only like this in Maura's presence?
Jane looks over towards Maura, questioningly. As Maura puts on a smile, as if everything is okay.
MAURA: (To Jane) "So, shall we eat."
Jane's not sure how to proceed. Should she address the awkwardness, or should she leave it alone. Jane decides to drop it, for now.
JANE: "Uh, yeah. I'll go get the pizza, and bring it out here."
Jane proceeds to walk towards the kitchen, but stops herself, when she sees Maura proceeding to follow her.
JANE: (Towards Maura) "Uh. No, no."
Jane puts up her hand towards Maura, getting her to stop.
JANE: (Cont.) "I'll get the food, and drinks…What do you wanna drink?"
Maura's a bit taken aback.
MAURA: "Jane, it's okay. I can get it."
Jane was nervous, that Maura was going to find her secret birthday cake in the fridge. So, she held her breathe nervously as she followed Maura into the kitchen, to retrieve the pizza.
As they went into the kitchen together, with Jane following closely behind, Jane picked up the pizza off the counter, and held it in her hands. Jane stayed put in her spot, looking at Maura open the fridge door, and retrieved her wine, without much effort, and closes the refrigerator door, without much thought.
Jane breathed a sigh of relief, when she saw that Maura didn't notice the cake. The two exit the kitchen, and head towards the dining room table, where James is about finished with his dinner.
MAURA: (To Jane) "Do you want something to drink, Jane?"
Jane places the pizza on the table.
JANE: "Uh, I'll go get it." [Opens the pizza box] "I hope pepperoni is okay? I wasn't sure, what toppings you'd liked."
MAURA: (Smiles) "Its fine, Jane. Thank you."
Maura sits at the end of the table, as Jane makes her way back to the kitchen.
MAURA: "Jane, can you get me a plate, while you're in there?"
JANE: (O.S.) "Yeah. Sure."
Jane returns, with a beer in one hand, and 2 plates in the other. Jane hands one plate to Maura, as she goes and sits down, across from James.
Both Jane and Maura grab a pizza slice from the box.
JANE: (To James) "So, Jimmy, how was your day?"
James just shrugs and continues eating.
JANE: (Cont.) "What did you do all day?"
JAMES: (Shrugs again) "Nothing."
Jane doesn't know what to say, since her attempt at small talk, wasn't going anywhere.
JANE: (Cont.) "So, you just stay here, at home all day?" [Looks over at Maura] "By yourself?"
MAURA: (To Jane) "No, he goes to a Recreation Center in Charlestown. And this week, he's been learning how to play soccer."
Jane puts on an impressed look.
JANE: "Soccer. Wow, how cool."
JAMES: (Down) "I'm not good at it."
JANE: "It's alright, bud. I wasn't good at soccer either. Maybe you're just not good at it—"
Just then, Maura kicked Jane under the table.
JANE: (Winces) "Ow."
Jane looks over at Maura, wondering why she kicked her, and see's that Maura is glaring at her. Showing her disapproval of her words.
JANE: "I didn't mean it as an insult. What I meant to say was…" [Trying to choose her words wisely] "…that, you're not going to be good at every sport. And that's okay. Because the truth is, nobody is. So, what other sports do you like? That you could be good at."
MAURA: "Well, he's good at swimming."
JANE: (Upbeat) "See, there you go. You could go on, and become an Olympic swimmer."
James feels a little bit better.
JANE: (Cont.) "You know, I was good at swimming too. I couldn't compete though."
Jane said sadly.
JAMES: "Why not?"
Now it was Jane's turn to be silent. She hated how her condition had taken her out of so many opportunities growing up.
JANE: "The school wouldn't let me. Because of…" [Jane looks down at her lap] "…well, you know."
Even though, Jane didn't spell it out, that it was her condition that kept her from competing, but James knew that that was the reason.
JAMES: "Oh."
Jane didn't want to be the Debbie Downer of this dinner, so she decided to turn the attention to Maura's birthday.
JANE: (Upbeat) "So, I hope everyone is hungry for dessert."
MAURA: (Surprised) "You brought dessert?"
JANE: "Well…It's really supposed to be a surprise. Hang on, let me go get it. Wait here."
Jane gets up and heads towards the kitchen. A couple of short minutes later, Jane emerges from the kitchen. She is carrying a small round birthday cake, which has one single candle burning in the center of it.
Maura has a shocked look on her face. And the sight of Jane's birthday gesture, melted Maura's heart. She found it as one of the sweetest things, anyone has ever done for her.
JANE: "Happy birthday, Maura."
Jane puts the cake down next to Maura's dinner plate, in front of her.
JANE: "Or I should say, happy 'LATE' birthday, Maura."
They both let out a laugh.
MAURA: (Smiles up towards Jane) "Thank you."
JAMES: "But, we celebrated your birthday last week."
Both Jane and Maura look at James blankly.
JANE: "Um... Actually, I wanted to celebrate it with you two. You know, just us three, like a family."
JAMES: (Sad) "But, we're not a family."
Now James was the Debbie Downer. Both Jane and Maura didn't know how to respond to this. This was the most depressing, sadist thing they ever heard come from James.
MAURA: "That's not true, we're just a different type of family."
Maura tried to brighten the mood. And Jane is still left speechless.
Meanwhile, James is looking at this situation confusingly. He couldn't understand how they were a family. In his mind, a family equaled a mother and father living with their children under one roof. That was the only image he received from movies, TV, books, and from society in general. And since, Jane said that she wouldn't be moving in, he took that to mean, that they're not a family.
Jane went and sat in a chair next to James at the table.
JANE: (Calmly) "Your mother's right, we are a family, James. Just a different kind of family. Just because your mother and I aren't married, and I'm not living here with you guys, doesn't mean, we're not a family. I mean, I don't live with my parents, and my brothers, and we're still family. Okay?"
James nods his understanding.
Jane reaches out with her left hand, and ruffles his hair, to which he squirms away, not liking it. Which causes Jane to chuckle loudly.
JANE: "God, You're just like me."
James looks over towards Jane, and smiles. He likes hearing that he has somethings in common with his dad. Even though, his father is a woman.
JANE: (Gesturing at Maura) "So…Make your birthday wish, mama."
Maura looks down at the cake, and decided to change things up. She scoots the cake closer towards James.
MAURA: (To James) "You know what, how about, you make a wish for me."
James looks up at his mother, speechless and surprised. And a bit honored. He then looks towards Jane, and she gives him the go ahead.
James closes his eyes, and proudly wishes for something. And he opens his eyes, and gladly blows the candle out. Both Jane and Maura clap and cheer happily.
Jane gets up from her chair, and leans down and kisses the top of her son's head.
JANE: "I love you, son." [Towards Maura] "I'll go get a knife for ya."
BPD DRUG UNIT – MORNING (Tuesday)
Dan enters the drug unit, and makes a beeline towards Jane's desk.
DAN: (Towards Jane) "Hey."
Jane looks up at Dan from her seat, as he drops an opened file onto her desk, where there's a stack of surveillance photos, to which, Jane looks at questioningly.
DAN: "This is Roberto Sanchez."
Jane knows who he is. He was the drug dealer who she and Martinez were scoping out. She was hoping to bring him down, with the help of her CI, until everything went terribly wrong that night; when her CI, Yolanda was killed.
Jane shakes her head, as she goes through the photos.
DAN: (Cont.)"Korsak says he knows where, he and his posse are hiding out. We're going to go out tonight, and check this place out. And we were hoping, you could come with us—"
JANE: (Shakes her head) "No."
Jane gathered up the photo contents, and placed them back into the file, and hands it back to Dan.
DAN: (Determined) "C'mon, Jane. Don't you wanna get this asshole!?"
Jane doesn't respond, but goes back to her paper work; as if, she's ignoring him.
DAN: (Cont.) "He killed your CI, Jane. Don't you think Yolanda deserves justice? Don't you even fuckin' care anymore?"
JANE: (Snaps) "I'm not getting involved in another drug sting, with you Dan! I'm done with going undercover. I told you this. I'm done with all of this."
Dan crouches down to Jane's level, and looks straight at her face.
DAN: "This is not another drug sting. If you want to make Detective, you'll do this. We cannot choose our cases, Jane. No matter how much we dislike them."
With that, Dan gets up and walks away. Leaving Jane with conflicting thoughts. She wanted so badly to catch these guys, but she really didn't want to go back out on a drug bust. She knew how dangerous those drug busts could get. But Dan was right, you cannot choose your cases.
KORSAK'S CAR – NIGHT
Jane and Korsak are sitting in Korsak's car, that's parked some ways, across the street from this abandon warehouse; which is where, they think their suspect is selling drugs out of.
Jane is sitting shotgun, looking through some binoculars, scoping the place around the warehouse, hoping to spot Sanchez and his posse.
KORSAK: "Do you see anything?"
JANE: (Through her binoculars) "Just a group of teenagers, hanging around the entrance. There's no way to tell, if they're part of Sanchez's crew or not."
Jane puts her binoculars down, and just stares right out the windshield.
JANE: (Cont.) "God, it's so dark out here. How are we going to be able to tell, who's who?"
KORSAK: (Defensive) "Well, this is the only lead I could find. Dan's trying to find his home address, but this guy keeps moving around."
JANE: "Yeah. We didn't have any luck, with locating him either. Yolanda was the only one, who could get a hold of him."
KORSAK: "Is that why Martinez resigned?"
Jane looks at Korsak and shrugs. Jane really didn't know what happened to Martinez. They hadn't spoken since that whole blowout at the precinct.
JANE: (Re: Martinez) "He resigned?"
KORSAK: (Nods) "He's now working with the federal task force…"
JANE: (Distain) "Good for him."
Korsak rises his eyebrows at Jane's response. Getting the hint that this topic should end. So, Korsak tries to change the subject.
KORSAK: "So…you and the Doc…"
Jane looks at him wary.
KORSAK: "Are you two…together?"
JANE: (Calmly) "No. We're just friends."
KORSAK: "Close friends?"
JANE: (Shrugs) "Yeah, I guess." [Pause] "Why?"
KORSAK: "Oh, its just that, Crowe is going around spreading rumors, that you and Dr. Isles are dating and such."
JANE: "What?" [Shakes her head] "No. We're not. God, I wish he'd mind his own fucking business."
Jane goes back to looking through the windshield with her binoculars.
KORSAK: "So, that kid you brought to the Park…isn't yours?"
Jane looks over at Korsak, and lowers her binoculars. Feeling like she's just been found out. She looks down, unsure how to answer Korsak's question.
Meanwhile, Korsak feels he's overstepped his boundaries with the questioning, and tries to correct the situation.
KORSAK: "Look, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pried into your personal life—"
JANE: (Snaps) "No, you shouldn't have." [Thinking, then…] "It's complicated. I'm trying to help Maura out with…James. And I guess that makes some people think, that there's something going on."
Korsak nods.
KORSAK: "I can understand that. A working single mother…it cannot be easy for her. She could use all the help she can get. She's lucky to have a friend like you, looking out for her son."
JANE: (Sad) "Yeah. A friend like me."
The two go back to surveilling the place. When, Korsak thinks of something.
KORSAK: "How old is Dr. Isles' son?"
JANE: "10, why?"
KORSAK: (chuckles) "Heh, He's the same age as Josh. You know, the two of them, should have a play date sometime. They got along so well at the park."
JANE: "A 'play date?'"
KORSAK: "Well, that's what Melody calls them. We usually schedule them around Josh's little league games. It's actually pretty beneficial. It builds great team work. And gives time for all the players, to get to know one another better."
As Korsak is explaining all of this, Jane starts to think that this could be very beneficial for James. He could build long lasting friendships with other kids his own age. Not to mention, this would be a great bonding experience for him and Jane. Jane was loving this idea.
JANE: "So, this little league team…is there still room for James to join?"
KORSAK: "Well, maybe not this year, since the season's half way over. But I'm sure, next season, I'm sure we could fit him in. Is there a position in mind?"
JANE: "Actually, he's barley learning. It's hard to say, what position he's good at."
KORSAK: (Surprised) "He's never played baseball before?" [Jane shakes her head] "Not even softball?" [Jane shakes her head again] "Not even t-ball?"
Jane can't help but laugh.
JANE: "I know, it's shocking, right? A kid in Boston, who doesn't know baseball. But, he's more of a 'brain' type of kid…"
Korsak nods.
KORSAK: "You mean, he's not a Jock?"
JANE: "Exactly. Sports weren't his thing."
KORSAK: "I guess it makes sense, though. Dr. Isles doesn't look like, the sports type either. So, I take it, that James' father was never around?"
JANE: "When he was growing up, no."
KORSAK: "Yeah, the same with Josh too. His father took off when he was 2. I've been the only father, he's ever known."
JANE: (Impressed) "Wow. So you taught him everything."
KORSAK: (Nods) "Yeah, I suppose. Taught him how to ride a bike, play sports, fish…I was there, when he lost his first tooth…"
JANE: "When he was scared of the dark?"
KORSAK: "Yup. Even when he first learned how to use the toilet." [Remembering…] "His first day of school; He started crying. And then, we started crying too."
Jane smiles as she hears Korsak's memories of Josh growing up. At the same time, Jane feels sad and heartbroken, at the fact that she didn't have those memories of James. She wished she could have been there to see his 'first' moments. To be there to comfort him when he was having his bad ones too.
Korsak stops smiling and talking, when he sees Jane's demeanor change to pure sadness.
KORSAK: "Are you okay?"
JANE: "Hmm? Yeah. Just really tired, is all."
Korsak agrees.
KORSAK: "Yeah, maybe we should call it a night. I don't think these people are going to show."
Jane places her binoculars away, and picks up her radio…
JANE: (On the radio) "Dan…"
DAN: (V.O) "Yeah?"
JANE: (On the radio) "You got anything on your end?"
DAN: (V.O) "No. You?"
JANE: (On the radio) "No. Korsak and I, are thinking of pulling in for the night."
DAN: (V.O) "Alright. See ya back at the precinct."
Korsak starts up the engine, and he and Jane put their seat belts back on.
KORSAK: "You know, I didn't mean to pry back there. If you don't want to talk about it, I do understand."
Jane listens closely.
KORSAK: (Cont.) "But, if you're still interested, I could talk to Melody and Josh, and see if we could arrange a play date for them…If you want."
Jane smiles.
JANE: "I'll talk to Maura about that."
KORSAK: "Of course."
JANE: "But, thank you, though. I really appreciate it."
KORSAK: (Smiles back) "No problem."
Korsak puts the car in drive, and heads off down the street.
JANE'S APARTMENT – BEDROOM – EARLY MORNING (Thursday)
Today was the big day. Jane was going to be interviewed, for a spot in the Homicide Unit. Korsak got interviewed yesterday, but she didn't hear any news on how it went.
Jane was so nervous about the interview, she made sure to look as sharp and professional as she could. So, she made an appointment with a hair stylist at her local salon, to help her fix her hair for the interview.
But, by the time, that Jane had gotten back to her apartment, after her hair appointment, it was another story…
Jane enters her apartment door, wearing her casual clothes, of faded jeans, and an oversized hoodie, that she had zipped up all the way, with the hood over her head, obviously hiding her hair from the public.
Jane immediately stops dead in her tracks, as she walks inside her apartment; as she finds Frankie in there, waiting for her by the kitchen counter.
JANE: (Startled) "Frankie? What are you doing here?"
FRANKIE: (Gestures at the 2 coffee cups, and paper bag that are on the counter) "I got you breakfast. And I also came by to wish you good luck, on your interview today."
JANE: (Smiles) "Thank you. I'm really going to need the coffee, after that hair appointment disaster."
Jane approaches the counter for her cup of coffee. Frankie continues sipping out of his.
FRANKIE: "What hair disaster?" [Looks over what Jane has on] "Why are you covered up, it's nearly 90 degrees outside?"
JANE: (Motions towards her head) "The hair stylist, fucked up my hair."
FRANKIE: (Huffs) "Oh, C'mon, it can't be that bad—"
Jane removes her hood, revealing her very straight, flat hair. Which causes Frankie to choke on his coffee.
FRANKIE: (Shocked) "What the hell happened? Did you tell them to do that?"
JANE: (Frustrated) "NO! I told her, that I had a VERY important job interview to go to. And that I need to get my hair to look professional, and neat." [Pointing at her hair] "And she did this to me."
Frankie just stares at his sister's hair, wide-eyed, and speechless. Which is causing Jane to feel insecure.
JANE: (Runs her hand through her hair) "It looks bad, doesn't it?" [Frankie remains speechless] "God, I fucked up. Maybe if I put some mousse in it, or something…"
Frankie places his hands on Jane's shoulders, getting her to stop ranting and freaking out.
FRANKIE: (Sincere) "You look good, sis."
JANE: "Then why are you giving me those looks…"
FRANKIE: "I've just…I've just never seen you like this before. It just took me by surprise, that's all. But, you do look great sis. And you're going to nail this interview."
Jane smiles at Frankie, finally feeling confident about her hair.
FRANKIE: "I got to head in soon. Call me when it's over, alright?"
JANE: (Nods) "I will."
Frankie takes his coffee cup, and head towards the door.
JANE: (Cont.) "Thanks Frankie."
FRANKIE: "Sure thing."
Frankie exits the apartment.
Jane had gone off towards her bedroom to get ready. She had taken her casual clothes off, and she put on her new black pant suit, she went out and bought for this interview.
She stood in front of her full length mirror, and tucked in her plain white collar shirt into her pants. She ran her hand smoothly down the front of her pants, looking very pleased in the mirror, that she's able to hide her penis very well. She continued on, getting dressed.
BPD HEADQUARTERS – LOBBY – MORNING
Jane cautioned herself, as she entered the building. Hoping not to be seen. She made her way quickly towards the elevators, and pushed the elevator button, repeatedly.
As Jane stood there waiting for the elevator, she noticed people looking at her, as they walked by. When they smiled at her, and said hello, she did the same back. But, she couldn't help but feel judged. She couldn't wait to be done with this interview. So she could go straight home, since she took the day off, for this interview.
When Jane got called in by the lieutenant in Homicide for the interview, he look at her surprisingly.
LT. MARQUETTE: (Smiling) "Hello, Jane. Good to see you."
Jane puts on a smile, as she enters the room.
LT. MARQUETTE: "Please, come, sit."
Jane sat down across from him.
JANE: (Smiling back) "Thank you, Sir."
The lieutenant looks down at Jane's file.
LT. MARQUETTE: "I see you came out number 8 on the written exam." [Impressed] "Good job!"
JANE: (Proud) "Thank you, Sir."
LT. MARQUETTE: "You were tied with 4 other applicants."
Marquette nods his head, as he goes over her file. He then leans back in his chair and proceeds…
LT. MARQUETTE: "So, Rizzoli, I understand you're doing a great job working in the Drug Unit. How do you like it there so far?"
Oh, here we go. Lie Rizzoli!
JANE: "I like it a lot, Lieutenant. I really enjoy working the streets. And working with the people in the community, to keep the streets safe."
LT. MARQUETTE: "I understand, you got into an incident a few weeks back, where your CI was killed, and you quit the force?"
SHIT!
LT. MARQUETTE: "…Am I understanding this correctly?"
JANE: (Fumbling her words) "Well, Sir…I…I didn't quit the force. I was having a disagreement, with my partner at the time, and—"
LT. MARQUETTE: "You mean, Sargent Martinez?"
JANE: "Yes." [Paused] "I uh, I lost my CI, and I took it badly. But, I came back to work, and I've been here ever since."
LT. MARQUETTE: "And, I'm sorry to have to ask this, but, what is your relationship to Dr. Maura Isles?"
DOUBLE SHIT!
Jane looks on, in total shock. She feels like she's just been blind-sided.
JANE: "We're friends."
LT. MARQUETTE: (Surprised) "Friends?"
JANE: "Yes, sir."
LT. MARQUETTE: "You know, we've been doing interviews throughout the week, and for some reason or another, your name, and Dr. Isles' name, keeps coming up."
DAMMIT CROWE, AND YOUR FUCKIN RUMORS!
JANE: "If this is about the rumors, which are going around, they're not true. Dr. Isles and I, are not dating. We're just friends."
The lieutenant sits back nodding.
LT. MARQUETTE: "Mm. Yeah, I can't stand for rumors." [Looks down at Jane's file] "Looks like people will say just about anything to get ahead."
Jane just looks on confused. Wondering what the lieutenant meant by that.
LT. MARQUETTE: "But, like you said, there's nothing going on. So, enough with that."
JANE: (Forces a smile) "Yup, nothing going on."
Jane and the Lieutenant talked for another 10 minutes or so. Finally, the interview was over. Jane stood up to leave, and Lt. Marquette reached over and shook Jane's hand.
LT. MARQUETTE: "Good luck, Detective Rizzoli. We'll let you know, in due time."
JANE: "Thank you, Sir."
Jane left the room.
Jane drove over to Maura's house, after her interview. She drove there, replaying everything that had gone on during the interview. She couldn't escape what the lieutenant said and asked. What were the other applicants saying about her and Maura? Could her past relationship with Maura hurt her chances of making it into homicide? No that's crazy, Jane thought. But there was still something bugging Jane.
What the hell does everyone think, they know about Maura and I? Korsak's questioning me about it? Crowe and Grant think they know something, and now the head of Homicide is questioning me about it. What the fuck is going on? Jane was really having a bad feeling about this.
As Jane arrived at Maura's place, she found an extra car parked in the driveway. Melody and Josh must be here already, Jane thought. She pulled out a small bag from the back seat of her car, and walked up the driveway. Jane decided to forget about everything at work, and just try and enjoy the rest of the day.
Jane had talked to Maura during the week, about setting up a "play date," as Korsak put it, with Josh and James. After Jane informed her, that James and Josh got along so well at the park. Maura kindly agreed to it. So they decided to schedule a small pool party for them. Maura didn't have a big pool, but a decent sized one.
Jane rang the doorbell. Moments later, Maura answered it. She's wearing a see-through blue floral Kaftan, over her black one-piece bikini, with a pair sunglasses on her head.
Jane is in complete shock when she sees her, she couldn't help, but admire at how gorgeous Maura looked.
Meanwhile, Maura herself was shocked at the way Jane looked.
MAURA: (Distracted) "Jane…Wow…Your hair…"
JANE: (Caught off guard) "Oh, yeah." [Runs her hand through her hair] "I forgot about it—Do you like it?"
Jane asked nervously.
MAURA: "Of course. I'm just…"
Maura couldn't stop staring at her hair. Maura continued to look Jane, up and down, and she couldn't help at how stunning she looked.
Meanwhile, Jane was trying to take in how stunning Maura looked as well.
MAURA: (Amazed) "Wow…Um. Come in."
Maura moved back from the doorway, as Jane enters.
MAURA: "I just got done making some iced tea, and some lemonade for the boys."
JANE: "Ah." [Motioning her bag in hand] "I brought my bathing suit, and some changing clothes."
MAURA: "Oh, yes, of course." [Motions towards the guest bedroom nearby] "You can change in the guest bedroom, there."
Jane looks in the direction that Maura's pointing at.
JANE: "Oh, Okay."
MAURA: "And the restroom is right next door. In case, you need to use it." [Jane nods] "And you can come out by the pool, when you're ready."
JANE: (Smiles) "Alright."
MAURA: "Oh, yeah. Also, there's some pizza and snacks in the kitchen, if you're hungry. So, help yourself."
JANE: "Okay, thanks."
MAURA: "Sure. See you out there."
Jane proceeds into the guest room, to change into her bathing suit, as Maura walks off.
MAURA'S HOUSE – BACKYARD/POOL AREA – DAY
When Jane emerges into the backyard, she finds James and Josh playing in the pool, along with another boy, she's not familiar with.
Jane spots Melody and Maura lounged out by the pool, on lounge chairs, just sitting together, sipping iced tea, and in deep conversation, as they lie there enjoying the sun.
Jane walks over towards them, wearing a faded navy t-shirt, and short black swim trunks, along with sunglasses and flip flops.
Maura spots Jane walking towards her, and so does the kids in the pool.
JAMES: (Shouts from the pool) "HEY JANE!"
JANE: (To James) "Hey, buddy. You having fun?"
JAMES: (Swimming towards Jane) "Yeah."
Jane crutches down, next to the pool, to greet James.
JANE: (Re: Unknown boy) "Whose your friend there?"
JAMES: (Looks over to the unknown boy) "Oh, that's Mark. He's Josh's friend. He plays in his little league team."
JANE: "Ah." [Stands up, and waves to Mark] "NICE TO MEET YOU, MARK!"
Mark just waves back, as the three of them continue playing in the pool, splashing around.
Jane heads over towards where Melody and Maura are seated. Jane goes towards the first empty lounge chair, closes towards her, which is next to Maura's.
JANE: "Hey."
MAURA: (Smiles) "Hi, Jane. You remember Melody, right?"
JANE: "Of course. How are you doing, Melody?"
MELODY: "Great. Thanks for setting up this play date with Josh."
JANE: "No problem. It's great that they're all getting along."
Jane tosses her beach towel on the chair, and sits down.
MAURA: (To Jane) "So, how did the interview go today?"
Here we go.
JANE: (Shrugs) "Uh, It went…alright. I don't want to jinx it."
MELODY: (To Jane) "Oh, you went in for the interview, in Homicide too?"
JANE: (Nods) "Yeah."
MELODY: "Vince did his yesterday."
JANE: "Oh, yeah. How did it go? Did he get it?"
MELODY: "He didn't say. He just said that, it may be a while till he hears anything. I guess they're interviewing a lot of people for those spots."
I wouldn't doubt it.
JAMES: "JANE, COME AND PLAY WITH US!"
The other two in the pool, encourage Jane to join them.
JANE: (Gives in) "Alright!"
Jane rises, and grabs her towel, and heads to the edge of the pool. She drops her towel on the ground, slips off her flip flops, and pulls her shirt off, revealing a simple black bikini top. She grabs the loose elastic hair band from her wrist, and ties up her hair into a ponytail, and gets into the pool slowly.
JANE: (Gasps) "Oh, wow. This water's cold."
Meanwhile, both Melody and Maura watch on, at all 4 of them, playing around in the pool.
MELODY: (To Maura) "You're lucky to have a friend like Jane. You know, someone to help you out."
Maura looks on at Jane and James tossing a beach ball around, and laughing together, having a great time.
MAURA: (Proud) "Yeah, I am lucky."
MELODY: "So, Vince told me that James' father is not in the picture."
Maura didn't know what to say about that. So she took her time, to choose her words carefully.
MAURA: (Re: James' father) "He's involved." [Thinking] "But, we're not living together."
Melody nods, finding this topic close to home for her.
MELODY: "Yeah, Josh's father took off, when Josh was a baby. And Vince has been a Godsend. He took to Josh right away. And he treats him, like he's his own son."
MAURA: "Wow, Vince sounds like an amazing man."
MELODY: "He is." [Pause] "I probably shouldn't be telling you this, but…Josh's father and I, have been talking. And he wants to get to know Josh. Vince doesn't know. I don't know what to do…I mean, should I let him meet Josh? Should I ask Josh, what he wants to do? I don't know what to do. I mean, what would you do?"
MAURA: "What do you mean?"
MELODY: "I mean, what would you do, if James' father wanted to get to know his son, and wants to spend time with him, and raise him. Would you let him?"
Maura didn't know how to answer that. All she knew was that, that was the situation. James' father is doing those things that Melody asked.
But Maura being the person, who cannot tell a lie. Decided to say…
MAURA: "I would let him. I mean, from my own experience, James deserves to know his father. And it would be wrong to deny James that opportunity. I mean, that's his father. And the same goes for his father: James is his son."
Melody nods sternly and satisfied with Maura's answer.
Maura's attention is soon distracted, by the splashing sounds of Jane and James swimming across the length of the pool. Obviously racing each other, as Mark sits on the edge of the pool, cheering them on, as the two continue doing laps.
Jane finishes on top.
JANE: (Smiling, out of breath) "Whoo, I won."
James doesn't take to losing very well.
JAMES: (Angry, whines) "That's not fair! You're taller than me!"
James argues, out of breathe. While, he angrily splashes the water around him, in protest.
JANE: (Shocked at James' reaction) "Oh, C'mon. You're younger than me, you should have the stamina."
JAMES: "No. That's not fair! You cheated."
Jane looks over towards Maura, who has a disappointing look on her face. Jane knows she should suck up her pride, and let James win.
JANE: (Defeated) "Okay. You know what, you're right. My height is an advantage. So…" [Looks at Maura] "I'm should be disqualified. You win, James."
James feels a little bit better.
Jane lifts her hand towards James for a high five, which he returns.
JANE: (Proudly) "Good job, Junior. You'll be earning gold medals in no time."
Jane looks over at Maura, and sees her disappointment change to happiness.
JANE: (Playfully) "But, I bet I could beat your mom, though."
Everyone looks over towards Maura, whose rolling her eyes at Jane's taunt.
MAURA: "I am not racing you, Jane."
JANE: (Confident) "See what I mean."
MAURA: (Playful) "No. It's just that, I don't want to spend the rest of the night, nursing your wounded ego, after I beat you."
Maura smirks.
The others woo and laugh at Maura comeback. Jane couldn't help but laugh, she knew it was true. Maura most likely could take her down.
JANE: "Alright, I'll give ya that one!"
Maura smiled at Jane, as she put her sunglasses back on. The kids went back to playing around in the pool.
Maura got up from her lounge chair, and took off her kaftan, revealing her plain black 1 piece bikini. Which hugged her body very well.
Jane was memorized. She could not stop staring at Maura. Maura leaned down and picked up a bottle of sunscreen, and started to apply it on her legs and arms. Meanwhile, Jane's eyes followed Maura's hands, as she spread the sunscreen around. Jane was in awe of Maura's perfect body. How her hands glided over every curve of her body. Jane was glad she was a victim of "shrinkage," or else getting out of this pool right now, would be embarrassing.
Jane's daydreaming was interrupted, when Mark swam in front of her, to get to the edge of the pool, to climb out.
Jane decided to climb out too, and head off to get something to eat and drink.
As Jane pulled herself out of the pool, Maura stopped applying sunscreen on her arms, as she just sat there, in her lounge chair, checking Jane out, through her sunglasses.
Maura jaw nearly dropped, when she saw Jane pull herself out of the pool. Jane's swim trunks were bunched up, pretty high up her left leg. Maura looked straight at her crotch area, wondering if she can spot "it." But Jane quickly pulled the wet fabric down. As Jane bent over to retrieve her towel, she stood up and started to dry off her body. Maura noticed as the sunlight bounced off the front of Jane's wet swim trunk, she could spot a small bulge there.
Maura continued to stare at Jane, as the way Jane had stared at her. Maura couldn't help but look over Jane's well-toned arms and abdomen, and those long legs. She couldn't help but shake her head. This is not the same Jane Rizzoli, she had on Prom Night. This was the more advance version.
Maura's gaze soon returned to herself, when she saw Jane disappear into the house.
The pool party in itself, was successful. The kids all had fun and enjoyed themselves. Jane, Maura and Melody had gotten along, and enjoyed themselves as well. Well, Jane and Maura enjoyed each other, a little bit too much.
Melody took off around 4pm, with Josh and Mark, hoping to get home soon, before Korsak gets off work.
Jane, James, and Maura had a nice small dinner together, before retreating to a movie together in the living room.
As the evening was coming to a close, Jane was getting ready to leave.
Jane and Maura are sitting in the living room. When Jane rises from the couch.
JANE: (Tired) "I should be going."
MAURA: "You don't have to leave. You could sleep in the guest room."
Jane is taken aback.
JAMES: "Yeah, you can sleep here!"
James says as he jumps up excitedly, from his spot on the floor, in front of the TV.
Jane really didn't want to overstay her welcome. She feels that spending the night there, is an inconvenience.
JANE: "Na, it's alright. I don't want to be a bother…"
Maura goes up to Jane, and places a loving hand on Jane's shoulder.
MAURA: (Sincere) "It's not Jane. Look, you're exhausted. And it's not safe for you to be driving. In fact, The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute estimates that fatigue, is the cause of 20 percent of car accidents."
Jane really didn't want to hear statistics. But, she knew Maura was right. She had a long day, and driving home was something that she wasn't in the mood for either.
JANE: "Alright."
MAURA: "Great."
After saying her goodnights to James and Maura, she retreated to her bedroom. She didn't have any overnight clothes, unfortunately. So Jane just went to bed in her faded t-shirt, and underwear briefs.
Jane had no idea how tired she was, until her head hit her pillow, and she knocked out.
The following morning…
JAMES: (Whispers) "Jane…"
Jane stirs and groans, as she hears her name being called. She doesn't want to wake up yet.
JAMES: (Whispers louder) "Jane."
Jane opens her sleepy eyes, and rolls over onto her back. She sees James standing there next to her bed, wearing his pajamas, with his hair all messed up.
JANE: (Sleepy voice) "Hey…Morning."
JAMES: "Mom told me, to wake you up."
Jane starts to rub the sleep out of her eyes.
JANE: "Okay. I'm up."
James starts to walk out of the bedroom.
JAMES: (O.S.) "SHE'S AWAKE, MOM!"
Jane hears her son shout out, from outside her bedroom. Jane lies back down on her bed, shaking her head.
Uh, this kid. Who needs an alarm clock, when you have a kid shouting throughout the house.
Jane enters the dining room after finishing up in the restroom. She's wearing a navy BPD athletic shirt, and a pair of black cargo pants. She sees James sitting at the table, enjoying his breakfast of scramble eggs and bacon.
Maura enters the room, fully dressed for work, carrying a small pitcher of orange juice to the table.
MAURA: (Chipper) "Morning, Jane."
Jane approaches the table.
JANE: "Morning."
MAURA: "I made you some scrambled eggs and bacon, as well. I hope that's okay."
JANE: (Smiles) "It's perfect. Thank you."
Jane says as she sits down at the table, across from James.
MAURA: "Would you like some coffee?"
JANE: "Yes, please."
Maura heads back into the kitchen, while Jane starts eating her breakfast.
Maura returns with Jane's coffee mug, and a plate of her own breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast.
JANE: (Re: The coffee) "Thank you."
MAURA: "Do you want creamer?"
JANE: "No, I'm good. Thanks."
Maura sits down at the end of the table, and begins to enjoy her breakfast.
MAURA: (To Jane) "So, did you sleep well?"
Jane nods, unable to answer with her mouth full.
JANE: "Yeah. That mattress in there, is extremely comfortable. Way better than mine. I should sleep here often."
Jane chuckles out.
MAURA: "I'm glad. And for the record, you can sleep here anytime you like."
Jane wasn't so sure about that.
JANE: (To James) "So, James, what are you going to do today?"
JAMES: (Shrugs) "Probably go to the Rec center."
JANE: "That sounds like fun."
James just shrugs again. Not really finding it all that interesting.
MAURA: (Jumping in) "Are you going into work today, Jane?"
JANE: "Uh, maybe for a little while. I just have to check in with Korsak and Dan, and see what's up with this 'Sanchez' situation."
Jane looks at James, and gets an idea.
JANE: "You know, if I don't have anything to do today, than," [Looks over at Maura] "…Maybe, I could spend the day with James."
James' face lights up with excitement. Maura's not so sure.
MAURA: (Hesitant) "I don't…Jane, you don't have to do that."
JANE: "But, I want to." [Worried] "I mean, unless, you don't want me to."
MAURA: "No. No, that's not it." [Choosing her words] "I don't want you to feel, like it's an obligation…to spend time with him."
Jane sees Maura's train of thought.
JANE: "OH." [Chuckles] "No, I'm…I want to spend time with him. James and I, could go to the park, and throw the ball around." [To James] "How about that, would you like to do that?"
James nods excitingly.
MAURA: "Okay." [To James] "If Jane has time today, she'll spend the day with you, so you don't have to go to the Rec center today, okay?"
James smiles widely and nods.
JANE: "In fact. I'll call Dan right now, and see if we have anything plan today."
Jane steps away from the dining room, towards the living room to make her call.
Jane found out that they didn't have anything plan today. So Jane decided to take the day off. Sadly Maura couldn't, since she took the day off yesterday.
So Jane and James had packed some lunches for their trip to the park. Jane had taken some of her baseball items, such as bats, gloves, and a couple of baseballs. They had spent the afternoon, tossing the ball around, and even got to spend some time in the batting cage. She even taught him how to throw a curve ball. Although, James didn't have much success with it. That was something, he needed more practice on, in order to execute properly.
The two even managed to take a trip to Jane's parents' house, where they spent at least an hour visiting Nona Angela. To which, Angela managed to embarrassed Jane, by showing James pictures of her when she was little. All in all, it was a great day for both of them.
