Masquerade

Few days later, Cross Academy

'I can't save Sara-san…or stop Kaname at least…all I could do was just watching like a dump…what a shame of me…'

"Hikari…?"

'The parent suddenly went berserk and consumed almost all of anti vampire weapons we have. Now, the association's headquarter had fallen apart. If I had become more useful back then, may be…'

"Hikari?"

Hikari turn with no enthusiasm on her face. She looks at Kaien's face directly.

"What?" she asked.

Kaien sweat dropped behind his table when he saw some gloomy aura spread out of Hikari's body. That girl's body now surrounded by dark aura, she is full of confusion and despair.

'I wander why does she choose my working room to spend her despair time? Isn't there any room left for her?' Kaien wandered inside his heart.

"You mind if I'm here?" she asked again.

Kaien wants to say 'no', but the dark aura that surrounding Hikari looks frighten and intimidate him, so he choose the better way.

"Not at all," he answered. "But…shouldn't you go to school today?"

"I have no intention to do that," Hikari answered, and then she turns her gaze away.

'Also, I'm sure you won't do nothing but daze and keep thinking about the problem,' Kaien added silently.

"I know what you're thinking about right now, Kaien," Hikari shouted.

"Y-yes," Kaien stopped thinking about anything instead. Then he coughed, "Hikari, don't think about it too much. Our most priority is solve the problems nowadays, let go the previous problem,"

"You can say such things easily despite of you still owe me the words 'sorry'," Hikari said.

"Sorry for what…?" Kaien asked confusedly.

"Sorry for feel uncertain about Kaname, Hikari. You're right, I'm false. I won't hesitate about him anymore. Don't you remember?" Hikari remained.

Kaien is laughing in sweat dropped, "What a great memory you possess,"

"So…?" Hikari asked for answered immediately.

Kaien takes a deep breath, "You're right," he said. "Sorry for argued you that times,"

"Where is Arashi?" she asked.

"Oh, he is in headquarters right now, clean up the mess with the others," he answered. "He is so curious about your relation with Kaname,"

"I'll explain to him later," Hikari said. "He looks much objected about it, doesn't he?"

"Nope, he just curious," Kaien shouted.

"Sou ka…"

"Anyway, Hikari…" Kaien said. "Would you please accompany Yuuki and Zero to Isaya san's masquerade ball?"

Hikari turned again, "Masquerade ball? You remember I've been prohibited to attend any ball for vampires, don't you?"

"Yeah, that's right," Kaien fixes his glasses position. "But I believe the situation has different now. Now I can rely on you. I'm sure you can control your power and your emotion now,"

"What is your true purpose?" she asked.

"I'm sure he will attend too, illegally may be," he answered.

Hikari's enthusiasm increased when she heard the word 'he'.

"'He' you talked just now is…"

Kaien nodded, "Kaname, of course," he answered. "We knew he will be the new parent but he still intends to kill all purebloods, doesn't he? Isaya-san holds the party to get his attention, of course. That's why; do you want to use this chance?"

"Ares…" Hikari murmured. She will never forget that her weapon has taken by Kaname few days ago within the chaos in Association's headquarter.

Wait a second…!

"But that problem has nothing to do with me," Hikari shouted.

"Well…let's just say…you have to talk with him, right?" Kaien replied.

'Talk…with him…?' Hikari thought confusedly. 'I never thought about it…'

Kaien coughed, "I heard some rumours that your brother is with Kaname now, is that true?"

"Yes," Hikari answered.

"Don't you curious why he disappeared so sudden and now he is with Kaname?"

"Not really," Hikari answered. "When the ball would be held?"

Kaien just gives her smile.

Shoutou Isaya's place, in wardrobe

"I won't wear something like that ever!" Hikari snapped.

By the time Hikari, Yuuki, and Zero arrived at Isaya's place, Hikari made some noise with her scream, fortunately the ball has not begun yet.

"Hikari-san, don't say that you will wear that cloak at the ball," Yuuki asked unbelievably.

"If I say yes, what you will do?" Hikari replied.

"Be professional, Hikari! You must adapt with the others at the ball," Zero added. "You must choose one of these dresses,"

"I won't," Hikari said firmly.

"What's wrong?"

Everyone's attention has moved to someone new in the room. There is a guy with dark coat appears in front of them; it's Shoutou Isaya.

"Is there anything wrong, miss huntress?" Isaya asked.

"I don't want to wear any of these dresses,"

"Do they not suit for you or there isn't any dress that matches on your taste?" Isaya asked.

"It's not like that. All of your dress are so elegant and beauty," Hikari shouted. "It's just…I was never wearing something like…gown,"

"Aa…naru hodo,"

"I'd be just watching, then," Hikari concluded. "I won't attend the ball,"

Isaya sighed, "Inspection, huh?" he said. "Very well, then. But at least…make up yourself, miss huntress. A woman should not attend the party without any make up on herself,"

"I'll consider it,"

"Ah…one more thing…" Isaya added.

In Bathroom

Hikari look at her own reflection on giant mirror in Isaya's bathroom. She looks like a vampire hunter who would hunt level E instead of a girl who will attend a ball party. She wears her dark cloak, boots, trouser and clothes. She looks at her own pocket inside her cloak, the place where Ares used to be.

Kaien's words echoing inside her head, "He made you have some reason to meet each other, at least…"

'Reason…? It might be true…' Hikari admitted.

She looks her reflection once more. Then she caresses her own long-black hair.

"Make up, huh…" she murmured.

She has made her decision. Then, she releases her soft lens; shows a pair of emerald eye.

At the balcony

The Vienna waltz music was heard playing in slow rhythm inside the ballroom. Hikari hears and enjoy the music quietly from outside, from the balcony. She is standing alone there, waiting trouble to appear soon.

All of Hikari's senses feel the presence of all the vampires who attending the ball. She feels how many vampires there and trembles in Goosebumps.

"What a number…" she murmured. She has made her decision to not get in there except live-death situation. She is not sure she won't kill any vampires there.

Then Hikari watch her own golden hair with weird gaze. She is no longer used to appear in her true appearance with her golden hair and emerald eyes like this, and now when she appear in this appearance again, she got some nervous.

"Honestly, why did I make up like this? Who's for?" she asked herself.

Suddenly, Hikari sense another presence appears near her. The presence is very strong and ancient…and the presence she is waiting for since the beginning. She turns around and sees a black hooded person wears black mask on his face. His dark hair cannot lies from her.

The guy walks towards her. Hikari doesn't step backward, she stands on her place.

He stopped when Hikari and he are facing each other closely, "Why you're here alone, ojou-san?" he asked.

Hikari distracted at the beginning, but then she remembered what Isaya said back then,

"One more thing," Isaya said. "Please obey the masquerade's etiquette; you don't know anyone here,"

Hikari sighed, "I can't get used to such crowd,"

"Why don't you wear mask? This is masquerade," he asked again.

"I hate mask. It's full of lies," she answered. "I want to show that this is me. I don't want to hide anything from anyone,"

"If you show your true self that easily, everyone might see your weakness point," he advised.

"I never feel like I'm a strong girl," Hikari ignored. "I just an ordinary weak girl who full of weakness,"

"Its' funny," he said, even he is not laughing at all.

"What was so funny?"

"I feel like we used to meet each other somewhere place," he said.

"No," Hikari answered calmly. "I don't know who you are,"

"Then," Suddenly Kaname holds Hikari's hand and raises it up, "If we don't know each other, it won't be a trouble if we dance, right?"

"Dance…?" Hikari winked her eyes unbelievably.

"Shall we dance?"

"I-I can't dance, sir," Hikari refused.

"Easy," he calmed her. "We'll dance slowly. You'll learn soon, I believe,"

"All right, but…watch your feet, sir," Hikari warned with frighten, she afraid she would step on this man's foot.

"I will," he said and then, with elegant moving, he led Hikari into Vienna waltz's rhythm.

Hikari still can't believe that she is dancing with him now. Even she never imagined it in dream. He was right, Hikari learn fast, she never made any wrong steps. They both dance in unbreakable unity.

"I'm sorry, sir…I don't wear proper clothes to dance with you," she said. "Why don't you dance with one of women there? They look more beautiful and elegant,"

"You mind if you dance with me?" he asked.

Hikari shook her head.

"Besides…you still look beauty and I can see your face clearly," he explained.

Hikari frowns, "It reminds me, why you wore hood here? You look like hiding from someone," she asked, "…and I can't see your face with that mask on you,"

"You're saying what's on your mind spontaneously," he comments. "You are similar to someone I knew,"

"Really…? Who is it?"

It took several minutes until he talks, "She was the girl I met eleven years ago; the girl with same emerald eyes and golden hair just like you. She also hates lies and bluntly. But you're not her,"

"She is vampire hunter now, she won't dance with a pureblood like me," he explained. "But that girl…is someone dear to me,"

"You sounds love her," Hikari comments.

"I do," he said.

Hikari surprised for a while, but then she laughed, "You also similar to someone I knew. He was my first friend. He has same face like you; a tired expression as if you've been through ten thousands years of endless journey. He was always carries all pain alone, he always close himself from anyone. He hurt people he dear but actually, it hurts him more and yet…he never cried. He took all those pain alone and still…tried to be tough. How stupid. He is the most stupid person I've ever met,"

"You care about him so much," he said. "Is he someone important to you?"

"Yes," Hikari admitted, her voice goes weaker become whisper. "But he already had someone he loved the most. He already engaged with someone. I don't want to stand between them both and break them,"

Suddenly, they stop dancing and face each other, but he doesn't let go of Hikari's hand.

"Then, where is that girl? The girl you told me…" Hikari asked.

"She is…is standing in front of me right now," he said.

Hikari is very surprise when she accepts those answers of him.

"…and where is the guy you love now?" he asked further.

Hikari stopped surprised and smiles for a second, "That guy was always hiding, but wherever he went, I'll find him, because I know he always protect me, even now…"

Hikari raises her hand and touches his face gently. Slowly, she removes his mask from his face; shows her his true face. Those dark eyes stare at Hikari as calm as usual, but there is something more inside. There is a little piece of gentleness inside him now.

"Kaname…" Hikari called him.

They gaze each other for several minutes in silence. No one talks. Kaname let go of Hikari's hand now and then Hikari step back from him, make a distance between them.

"Why did you appear before me in plainness like that? Why you let me revealed your mask?" Hikari asked loudly.

"I'm sure you can kill me even without your weapon," he said.

Hikari admitted that it was true, but…

"If I kill you here, you don't need to be the new parent. I can take over your place. I'm also an ancestor," she said. "But…how could I kill…someone important to me?"

Hikari's tears burst, "Why you always carry those pains all alone with that calm face as if it was nothing? You made everyone hated you; you made yourself lonely all this time and now…you want to be the new parent…you want to be the weapons of us, the hunters, dirtied by vampire's blood for centuries…alone?"

"It hurts you more than anyone else and yet…you stay still…" she added. "Ten thousands years alone and suffering and you want live longer in suffer again?"

Hikari feels Kaname's gentle hand wipes away her tears.

"You always think about someone else's happiness, but you never put any care about your own self," she continued. "There are many people will hurt out there if you die; people who love you, believe you, and care about you,"

"You also…never care about yourself," he stated and makes Hikari surprised. Then without warning, he drags himself closer to her. "I won't let you do something stupid for me,"

Hikari looks up and she sees Kaname leans down and suddenly the pureblood prince places a gentle kiss on her forehead. Hikari's eyes widened in surprise, she can't believe Kaname do something like this. Before she could conscious, Kaname had gone already, left her alone in the balcony.

"Kaname…" she whispered.

Hikari sure Yuuki and Zero will take the rest. They both are inside. She sure they can stop Kaname. Meanwhile Hikari still at the balcony, let the wind wiped her hair.

Hikari frowns narrow when she felt something heavy in her clothes. She checks it out and surprised when she find Ares is lying in its holster.

"He…gave it back…" she murmured. "But…when…?"

Then she remembered when Kaname drag himself closer and then kiss her. Hikari blushed as red as strawberry when she remembered that Kaname had kissed her forehead.

Hikari takes a deep breath and slowly she draws Ares from its holster, she can touch Ares. Then she looks at Ares carefully. It doesn't refuse her again this time.

"What a weird night…" she murmured.
