Bunnymund looked about in a panic. He searched every exhibit, bathroom, food stand and even the gift shop trying to find Jack, but the boy was nowhere to be found. In hind sight he probably didn't want to be. When they agreed to divide up Jack was quick to realize that he was being paired with a babysitter. The vicious game of rock, paper, scissors (Best of five) mostly likely game it away but Sandy and North's celebrating didn't help. Needless to say upon making this discovery Jack became set on having fun at the expense of his companion. Bunny cursed himself for picking rock and continued to search.
Though the zoo was fairly large it wasn't as if there were many places Jack could hide. In fact North had chosen the Los Angeles Zoo for the sole reason that the butterfly house was under repairs and the zoo was closed, thus making it a prime spot for their vacation. Not to mention North had made Jack where his pure white hoodie saying that it would keep the sunlight off him and make him cooler. North had neglected to mention the fact that it had the added bonus making the pale child extremely easy to spot.
To avoid fighting Bunny suggested they all split up for the second half hour of their trip (A bad idea in hind sight considering the small amount of chaos they experienced together), take in all their need-to-see sights and then meet up to look at larger exhibits again. After a short bit of spying North learned the dolphin trainers would be running their entire routine for the grand re-opening next week and told Bunny specifically that they had to meet up at exactly noon. Nearing a quarter till the hour and with no idea where Jack was or the meeting place Bunny quickened his pace.
He nearly passed the enclosed petting zoo when a cold chill in the humid air caused him to turn inside. Bunny tried his hardest not to breath too deeply as the air reeked of spoiled straw and tasteless animal pellets. All the penned up animals stared him down, some even growled or spat in his direction. As he explored the den he wondered how he got wrangled into this vacation. Despite, technically, being a rabbit Bunnymund wasn't all too fond of animals. Or rather animals weren't too fond of him. Animals barely tolerated each other at times, keeping very close knit groups to avoid predators, sometimes they would allow interaction with other species and even share a watering hole but Bunny was an exception. He was an alien creature to them. Something strange, new and that automatically made him dangerous. As he pressed on he tried to pay the less intelligent creatures no mind.
"Hey stop that!"
Bunny's ears shot up hearing Jack's laughter. With a growl he race in the direction of the sound. After spending half his time searching for the brat he was less than please.
"Frostbite! Come o-"
Bunny left out a gasp as a full grown sheep with curly horns smashed into his gut. With the wind knocked out of him the Easter Bunny crumbled to the ground. Before the ram could mount another attack a crook grabbed it around then neck and forcefully pulled it back into its pen. Jack shut the gate and sat on the fencing.
"Oh…you okay Kangaroo?"
Bunny shot a sharp glare at him.
"What in the bloody world do ya think yer doin'?" He sneered.
"Playing with the sheep. Sheep really like me. Bet you wish you could say the same."
A half a dozen sheep behind the fencing jumped up and nudged at Jack's back. They nuzzled against him like cats and bleated loudly as if they wanted to be petted. When Jack satisfied one by scratching behind its horns two more began to push and shove trying to get under his hand. More frustrated than curious Bunnymund grabbed Jack by the back of the hood and ripped his staff out of his hand.
"Hey give that back!"
"Not a chance. We have ten minutes to meet North and I'm not losing ya again because ya want to fly off!" Bunny snapped. "Now say bye-bye to your goat friends-"
"Sheep." Jack corrected forgetting his was still hanging by his hood.
"We're leaving." Bunny finished with a hiss.
Bunny kept a firm hand on Jack's hood as he dragged him off to find a sign post. North had said the place was called the dolphin pool, or area, or something like that. He couldn't bring the exact name to mind but he was sure the sign would have pictures. Bunny was pleasantly pleased to find there were, but not enough to release Jack who was now complaining.
"I can walk by myself." Jack said finally pulling out of his grip.
"Fine, but your not getting this back." Bunny said shaking the staff at him.
Jack folded his arms and walked a step behind Bunny as he lead the way. Not wanting to let Jack out of his sight Bunny took a step back and they walked together.
Bunnymund supposed this vacation wasn't all bad. Before losing Jack Bunny had enjoyed seeing all the animals but more so the look on Jack's face. Every time he encountered a new animal the winter spirit's eyes would fill with a wondrous light unique to only him. It was amazing and Bunny felt something warm inside every time he saw the genuine smile come across Jack's face. Perhaps if he remembered they were going to see dolphin Jack would have been dragging Bunny instead of his feet. However Jack suddenly came to a halt.
"Wait!"
"What?" Bunny asked stopping.
"This is the Outback Way." Jack said reading a sign post.
"So we're goin' ta Water Way, straight a head. Ya can even see the building." Bunny said pointing at the giant aquarium with Jack's staff.
"But there are kangaroos this way Kangaroo!"
Bunny rolled his eyes Jack was bouncing on his heels with excitement.
"We have eight minutes or we'll be late."
"We only need two and you said it yourself the building is right there."
Bunny looked back to just to find The Stare had returned to his face. For the love of the moon that look was evil. It was as if he was going to crush the boy's entire world if he didn't let him see the marsupials. Bunny growled.
"Fine, two minutes but only to show you I look nothin' like 'em."
"Yes!" Jack said throwing his hands up in victory.
"But I keep this. Now let's go the two minute clock starts tickin' now."
Jack ran off down the orange brick path leaving the blue one to disappear behind him. Shoving the staff in his boomerang holster Bunny rushed to catch up with him. There must have only been a two second instance where Bunny was not looking directly at Jack and now he was, once again, gone. Bunny twisted his head about finding only the sign that read 'Kangaroo Pen'.
"Hey Snowflake where'd ya go?!" Bunny called out.
"Bunny! Look we match!"
Bunny didn't want to turn around, but unfortunately he had to. He grabbed his head where a headache bloomed as he found Jack sitting down in the pen with an albino Joey in his lap. He sat in the middle of a small group of three young kangaroos. The parents looked at him once or twice, but left the boy alone as he didn't appear to be, by any means, dangerous. The little, snow-white, roo twisted and turned in the spirit's lap before settling down comfortably. The baby laid its head down as it yawned and went to sleep.
"Frostbite!" Bunny yelled regardless. "How did ya even get down there? It's a ten foot drop!"
Before Jack could answer Bunny changed his mind. He didn't want to know. Whether or not Jack was out of time they were leaving now.
"Never mind just get out of there!" He called down.
"Getting down's easy. It need my staff to get back up." Jack said petting the sleeping roo. "Come on your cousin wants to say 'hi'."
Jack laughed, but Bunny didn't understand it was just a joke. He leapt over the railing and down into the exhibit. The albino's ear shot up seeing the frightful creature and immediately bolted to the other side of the pen along with the other youngsters. Bunny ceased Jack by the hood again.
"That's it!" Bunny snapped lifting him up off the ground.
"Bunny." Jack said folding his arms unafraid.
"No not more Bunny this or but Bunny that!"
"Bunny."
"No! When we find the others we're going home!"
"Bunny."
"WHAT!"
"It think you made the boss man mad." Jack said pointing.
Bunny sighed, today was one of those days where it was bad to look behind you. Still he turned around and his ears dropped seeing a massive eastern kangaroo standing over him. The creature was already balanced on its tail with it's feet raised in the air. With a swift kick Bunny was thrown to the ground for the second time to today, dropping Jack in the process. Jack stood between him and the mob boss with his hands up defensively.
"Hey easy there big fella. He didn't mean nothin' by it." Jack cooed. "We're very sorry."
The daddy kangaroo leaned in and sniffed the boy. Seeing no threat between the boy and the downed stranger the creature nuzzled Jack's cheek and then hopped off to join his family of five that was hiding across the way. Jack pulled Bunny up from the ground.
"Anything broken?" Jack asked, almost scared of the answer.
"Just my pride." Bunny groaned.
"If it helps you don't look that much alike. Their ears are shorter and their muzzles are longer." Jack said trying to win back the Easter Bunny's favor. "Let's go."
Jack grabbed his staff from Bunny and had the wind pull them both out of the pen. Setting down on the ground pulled up his hood and hung his head.
"I'm sorry, let's find the others and go home."
Bunny huffed and straightened up his ribs still aching a bit.
"Nah, I'll get ya back later."
"Really?" Jack asked tilting his head. "Are you sure you don't have a concussion?"
"Ya were just excited, having a bit of fun…We'll figure it out later on. Let's just go."
Jack nodded his head. Bunny was being understanding and compassionate; yeah right.
"You don't want me to tell the others you got your rear handed to you by a kangaroo, do ya Kangaroo?"
"Ya say a word and I'll tell Tooth ya got into the cages after she told ya not to. Eight times I might add." Bunny threatened taking a different approach. "Now get goin' or we'll miss the dolphins."
"Dolphins!" Jack said lifting off the ground. "Why didn't you say that in the first place? Come on!"
Jack grabbed Bunnymund by the arm as the wind took hold of them. Bunny screamed as they were once again ripped up into the air. This had to be the most terrifying experience of his life, even worse than the sleigh as there was absolutely nothing between him and the ground and he was being held in a stick figure's grip. When they landed out in front of the area Bunny kissed the ground, thankful to be alive.
"Never do that again!" Bunny shouted.
"Fine, whatever, come on!" Jack said dragging him into the area.
Bunny sighed and followed now anxious to sit down. After this was over he would need a vacation from the vacation.
