Klaus's POV

I entered my mansion, accompanied by my afternoon 'meal', Claudia.

Ever since I saw Caroline die, right in front of my eyes, I vowed to never love again. I had broken that promise I had made before and it turned out being the biggest mistake of my life.

I had spent 2 weeks out, terrorizing villages. At first I decided to turn, because the feeling of the immense pain of becoming a wolf, made me feel better for not being able to help Caroline stay alive. I feel great guilt for just standing there like a fool with the sole thought of her having an affair.

That was it, that was my last thought of her. 'She's a harlot. I'm a fool for thinking otherwise; I'm a fool for loving her.' And then…Mikael snapped her neck and my whole world came crumbling down on me. I didn't have enough time to tell her that I still love her even though she was with child and she claimed it was mine. Her eyes told me the truth, but my stubborn mind did nothing to help her case. Deep down inside, I felt the need to believe her, I wanted to think that she was telling me the truth. She hardly ever left my sight, but in that moment all I could think of was her and some bloke making love.

Her beautiful eyes, closing as she fell to the ground, still haunts me. I fear I will never get that image out of my mind. For brief seconds, I contemplate on turning it all off and just live without this guilt. I want to live without the flood of emotions I feel at the moment. I never wanted this; I knew it would destroy me.

And then...I enter my bedroom and there she is. Those glowing blue orbs that have haunted me in my sleep were staring at me. For a second, I thought that my mind was playing games once more; I am hallucinating her again. But then...

"Who is she!?" She but all screams out in fury. My body freezes and I stare at her with bloodshot eyes. This couldn't be, in all my hallucinations, she has never spoken to me about what is happening around me. She is always happy and telling me how much she loves me and how everything will turn out being alright. Now….now she is yelling and glaring at me because of the women I bring behind me.

"Caroline?" I breath out. I take in a breath as I watch her place her hands on her hips. "You're...you're alive?" She knits her eyebrows down, looking quite confused.

"Of course I'm alive!" She answers in fact.

"But…" I release the woman's hand and I take a tentative step towards her. "I watched you die. Mikael snapped your neck...and you are not a vampire, it's impossible that you survived this."

"I might...be able to explain that." I suddenly hear Bonnie's voice from behind.

"Explain what, exactly?" Caroline questioned, with fear clear in her voice.

"Welcome back Nik." Kol greeted me bitterly. "I see you wasted no time to find yourself some company."

"It's not what it seems." I started, moving towards Claudia. "Leave." I compelled. "She was nothing more than food to me." I then heard Caroline breath out a sigh of relieve at my words. I wanted to smile, but I knew it wasn't the correct time.

"Alright...so if you could explain as to why Niklaus thought I had been killed, it would be great." Ouch, that hurt.

"Nik, Caroline." Kol called. "Please, take a seat because this will not be the only explanation that is going to be told today."

No one's pov

Klaus and Caroline did as they were told, and they both took a seat on the bed. Of course, Caroline made sure they sat with enough distance. She knew how he was, she wasn't to keen into believing that the woman he brought was just for a meal. He's a man for god's sake, he was surely going to have his pleasurable time with her before killing her.

"Ok, I will begin with Caroline's 'death'." Bonnie started, "See, when you all left for battle, I still felt uneasy for Caroline...and the baby growing inside her." She took a short pause. "I knew I had to do something to at least settle my racing mind, so I looked into my grimoire. What I found pleased me and I casted the spell as fast as I could. What the spell did was give Caroline protection from any death. She and the baby were secured from any threats or damage she might have gone through." Caroline's mind was racing from memories of that event. "When Mikael-"

"That is why my leg had healed from out of the blue!" Caroline exclaimed, interrupting Bonnie.

"Pardon?" She questioned.

"Well, in the course of being kidnapped, Mikael tortured me violently. He stabbed his knife into my leg various times until I finally passed out. Once I woke up, I noticed that I had no hole in my leg, I didn't know what that meant, but now I have the explanation. I thought I was going insane." Caroline explained. "Thank you Bon!" She quickly stood up, racing to give her best friend a hug.

"It was nothing Carebear, you know I would do anything for you." Bonnie responded, hugging her back.

"I am forever in your debt Ms. Bennett." Klaus stated, standing up as well, making his way towards Bonnie. He extended his hand and Bonnie took it politely.

"Why would you be in her debt?" Caroline asked, since, hello!, it was her that 'died' and has been brought back to life.

"Because you are my mate and I am eternally grateful for her saving your life." He replied.

"Well, if I can recall correctly, you were accusing me of having an affair with some other guy from the village right before my demise!" She yelled, glaring at him. Klaus looked down, looking guilty as ever.

"I know of my mistake now. If you say that the child growing inside your womb is mine, then... I will not think otherwise." He stated not so certain. "I was a fool to think that you would have had an affair." Klaus said. He looked up, meeting her eyes. "Will you forgive me?"

Caroline stared at him for what seemed for an eternity but was actually only 30 seconds. She inhaled a deep breath as her eyes fluttered close.

"I will have to think about this." She answered. "But for now, I will leave to live with Bonnie at her hut. I do not wish to see you until I am ready. I have lots of things to figure out and I think you have things to think about as well."

"No, I'm done thinking. I had over 2 weeks for it and now I'm done." Klaus stated. "I want you here and by my side."

"You weren't so sure of that when you thought of me as a harlot." She spat back. "I'm not fully certain that you believe that this child is yours. I know deep inside my heart that it is because you are the only one I have made love to, but I also know that you have your doubts. I sincerely have no explanation for how this has occurred but one thing I am sure about is that the child is yours." Caroline added.

"Um...I have the explanation as to how you two were able to procreate, as well." Bonnie said with a quiet voice. Caroline and Klaus quickly turned to look at her.

"Come again?" Caroline questioned.

"Explain it." Klaus urged. Bonnie quickly explained it to them before the room went silent.

"Now, I'm sure this is more than proof for you Nik." Kol tried to ease the unsettling mood. Klaus glared at Kol before his eyes softened. He slowly turned to look at Caroline, processing what he just had found out.

He will be a father, and to be honest that terrified him. "I will...I will be a father?"

"Yes, that is what I have tried to make you understand." Caroline replied while crossing her arms against her chest. "Now do you believe that you need time to think?"

"I-I...I must leave." He replied before flashing away.

"I'll go speak with him." Kol stated, making the attempt to leave.

"No." Caroline spoke, holding a hand up. "I will. I must admit that this might be a little too overwhelming for a five hundred hybrid. The thought of knowing that he won't be able to procreate ever, always in his mind and now, it was all a lie. I will speak with him and try to help him the best I can. If I fail, I will leave at dawn." She added before she walked out of the bedroom.

"I thought the Lord Niklaus would have been happy at such news." Bonnie commented. "I never thought he would leave in a hurry and with a frightened look."

"That's my brother to you." Kol started. "He's unpredictable."

Klaus entered his study, shutting the door behind him. He felt like the world was moving fast around him, making him walk in an unsteady step. He's an original hybrid for heaven's sakes! He supposed to be able to control these kinds of emotions.

But if he could be honest with himself at least, he was...scared. Niklaus Mikaelson, the all mighty hybrid, is afraid of a baby that hasn't even been born yet. And why may that be? Oh yes, he's afraid because he doesn't want to end up like Mikael. He doesn't want to be a horrible father, he has no clue to what a father does. Mikael gave him no good sides of him and he's lost on to what to do.

Once he had become a vampire, he was certain that having a child was impossible and he felt some relief come out of that. Now that he's a hybrid, he is able to procreate. What are the odds?

He was having a child, that's a deal done. The real question now is...does he want to be a part of the child's life?

Well, he wants to be with Caroline and he does not want to lose her, but if by being with Caroline means he must be a father, he is not so sure anymore. Caroline is a clear pathway, but the baby thoughts just fogs it.

"Klaus?" Caroline's soft voice echoed through his study as the door cracked opened.

"I wish to be alone at the time, my love." Klaus replied, grabbing the bottle of alcohol, drinking straight from it.

"Well, by the time you wish to speak to me, it will be too late." She stated with a strong voice. "Now, will you speak or will you sulk?" They stayed quiet for a while.

"What is it that you need to speak of?" He asked, breaking the silence. Caroline walked towards him, taking a seat in front of his desk.

"The child." She replied.

"I'm afraid I can't, maybe another question is in order?"

"No. We need to speak about this Niklaus! Because if you want or do not want to be a part of this baby's life, then I need to know this moment!" She exclaimed, standing up. And once again he stood in silence, taking a swing of his alcohol.

Caroline's jaw clenched at his reaction. She shook her head as fresh tears began to fall from her eyes. "Will you even try to speak?" She yelled.

Nothing.

"Niklaus Mikaelson I am speaking to you!" She called in fury.

"No! I do not wish to be a part of that child's life!" He explodes, pointing towards her stomach. "Ever since I heard you were with child, part of me wanted to believe you had an affair to be certain it wasn't mine, but another part didn't want that. I'm just not meant to be a father Caroline! And it is best for you to know now then for you to become angry towards me the day that child is born and I leave and never return."

Caroline stood quiet as she stared at him with teary eyes. She couldn't believe what he had just said.

"I'm...I'm not father material Caroline. I am certain that I will be able to damage the child's life within seconds of it's birth, and I do not wish to have that burden. I just want to live my life as to how I was living it when you were not around." He added.

Caroline took in a deep breath. "How are you so sure you are not father material, if you haven't even tried?"

"That is my point exactly. Listen carefully as to what I am going to say next." He replied. "Before you, I slept with women every night, I could not pass a day without having the thought of killing someone and doing so. I am sure I have killed easily millions of people and as to the reason? Well...it was just plain old boredom, love. I'm no father, I'm not a person a child should be looking up to..." He paused. "..I'm a monster." He whispered.

"You have said it. It was before me, but now you have changed for the better. You are the man I love and the father to our child. The past is in the past, you should live in the present and the present is me." She said. "I love you with all my heart Niklaus Mikaelson and I want to be with you forever." She added, offering him a loving smile.

"I'm sorry Caroline but..." He looked away. "but...I just don't love you the same way you do."

And with that phrase, Caroline's heart shattered into a million pieces. Just minutes ago, he was begging her to take him back; he was begging to be together and now he is saying that he doesn't love her!?

"I don't believe you." She whispered. "I know you love me Klaus. Please don't say that."

"I only speak the truth." He replied. "Now...if that was all, you are dismissed."

She stared at Klaus for a second longer before she turned around and she walked towards the door. She opened it at a normal pace, stopping just when she placed a foot outside the room. "I leave at dawn." She stated as her voice broke, not looking back, before leaving.

Just when she closed the door to his study, she ran to her old bedroom, letting herself break down. She was almost sure that he would want to be with her, but this was not what she expected. He had said that he had thought about it, and that made her think that he also thought about the child. She was wrong.

Now, her child will have to grow with no father figure.

What a tragedy.

Once Caroline had left, Klaus clenched the bottle in his hands, breaking it with the immense strength he was placing on it. He allowed a few tears escape his eyes before he wiped them away, furiously. He then stood up and he began to pace around the room, fuming from anger and sadness.

He has managed to lose Caroline twice and for his own foolishness. He wasn't made to be this person that has a family and lives happily ever after; no. He was made to suffer and make people suffer, that was just how it was with him. He believed that he didn't deserve happiness, and he was ok with that. He had come to terms with that a few years after becoming a vampire and then, Caroline comes to change and mix his thoughts and goals. It was amazing how much he had come to fancy this mortal, so much as to change for her.

But now it has come to an end. He couldn't do what she was asking for. He can't talk about being a father, he couldn't be a father, he does not believe that he could be father. He wouldn't want to torture his daughter or son just like his father did to him. He did not want to be a father just to become his own worst enemy.

Maybe her leaving is a good thing to him. After she is gone, he can go back to how he was and she can live her normal human life. He goes back to being the most feared being on Earth and she gives birth to her child, grows old and dies from natural causes, simple as that.

The only problem he sees in that scenario is that he will live a life without Caroline. He will live a life without seeing her radiant smile, without hearing her infectious laugh, without seeing her beautiful blue eyes and without being able to touch her. He will lose the most precious person he has ever had in his long life because of his paranoia.

Later that evening

"Niklaus?" Elijah called as he knocked at the door of the study. "I need to speak with you."

"I wish to be left alone, brother." He answered.

"Well I'm afraid I can not allow you privacy at the moment. I need to speak to you and drive some sense into your brain because clearly your brain is not functioning correctly for the choices you have recently made." Elijah stated, twisting the door knob to open the door before he entered.

"Came here to scold your favorite brother?" Klaus teased. He sat, facing him with his back as he drank from a brand new bottle.

"I am only here to check and be sure that what you have decided is the correct thing." He replied. "You do know that Ms. Forbes will be leaving at dawn?"

"Yes." Klaus simply answered, not even turning his head to look at Elijah.

"Are you sure you want this?" He asked. "Do you want to live a boring and loveless life? It's eternal Niklaus and she will not live for ever."

"I've told you once again that love is a vampire's greatest weakness Elijah. She was making me weak and now she must leave." Klaus answered.

"Clearly that is what you wish." Elijah replied in a sarcastic tone, receiving a glare from Klaus. "Don't you see that you will be miserable without her?! Don't even care that the child she is carrying is your own flesh and blood? Have you even thought what that might take of her?"

"What do you mean?" Klaus asked, now, giving Elijah his full attention.

"Niklaus, the child that is growing inside her is not normal to my understandings." He replied. "You're a hybrid procreating with a mortal, what good could that come?" He took a breath. "Of course a child, but to what cost? What if Caroline dies in the process of giving birth because if normal human mother's die when giving birth, what makes you think that Caroline will survive to see her own child grow? I'm most certain that this child will take almost all of her energy and that is the end for her."

"What would you suggest I do?!" Klaus exclaimed as he stood up. "You want me to be a part of her and the baby's life just to watch her die again?! You would like for me to take care of a child that is mine but I do not wish to have? Do you honestly think that I will actually be a father after what I passed through in my childhood?"

"Niklaus, the only thing I ask of you is to reconsider your decisions. Caroline is a bright young woman and I am almost certain that she will be a wonderful mother...that is if she survives." Elijah responds. "What I also suggest is that you be a part of her life and try to convince her to turn into a vampire. I believe that will be the only way for us to be sure that she will survive and she will be a mother to her child. You have to thoroughly think everything through because you might regret your decisions later in life." He adds. "I'll leave you with your thoughts and remember, she is leaving at dawn. You have a limited amount of time to change your mind and I do hope that you make the correct choice." And with that, Elijah left the room.

"Are you ready Care?" Kol asked her as he entered her bedroom. She looked at him with a sad smile while she nodded.

"Is everything in the carriage?" She asked, walking towards the opened door.

"Yes." He answered. "Are you fairly certain that you want to leave?"

Her eyes began to water as she nodded once again. "It's for the best."

"Maybe that's what you think is the best but in reality it's not." Kol stated.

"Well, that might be true, but for now, I think this is the correct pathway." She responded. "And remember you can always go and visit us when you wish to. You are family to me, the child and Bonnie."

"Oh hun, I believe Ms. Bennett and I are far from being family." He replied with a teasing smile. Caroline giggled softly just as they crossed the front door. They spotted Elijah, Stefan, Damon and Bonnie waited beside the carriage. But Klaus was nowhere to be found.

Somewhere inside her, she thought that maybe, just maybe, he would stop her from leaving and he would tell her that he wants her and the baby to stay. That he loves her and that he wishes to marry her someday.

Sadly, that was something that will only happen in her thoughts.

"I hope I receive a letter the day my niece or nephew is to be born." Elijah stated with a grin before bringing her in for a hug. "I wish you the best of all luck. You will be greatly missed to this mansion and to me."

"Of course you will receive a letter Elijah. And I will certainly miss you." Caroline replied, hugging him a lot tighter. "I will miss you." She whispered. Throughout the months, she had grown very close to the other Mikaelson as well. He was great for advice and for a good mature talk.

"Caroline." Stefan stated. "You have just come back to life and now you are leaving again?" He asked, giving her a hug as well. Caroline giggled.

"I'm sorry Stefan. I just have to leave this place, it has too many unwanted memories." She replied. "But you are always welcomed to come and visit me at Bonnie's hut."

"You know I will be there." He replied with a grin.

"Blondie." Damon stated, pulling her into a hug. "You gave us a great scare when we thought you died. I am glad that you are alive." He added. "You're alright to be around with."

"I will also miss you Damon." She replied with a low chuckle. He smirked while giving her a wink.

"Well, I think it is time." Bonnie informed.

"Let's leave ladies." Kol called out, already helping Bonnie inside the carriage. Caroline looked back at the mansion, hoping that at least he will come out to stop her from leaving, but he didn't. "Caroline?" Kol urged.

"Yeah." She said, turning back to look at the carriage. "Here I come."

If only she had looked up at the window to notice that he was watching her with teary eyes. Maybe if they had made eye contact something else would've happened. But of course she didn't look up and Klaus didn't stop her.

His chances to be with her now, were slim to none. He had chosen the wrong path and he knew it. The only eyes he saw now were of Elijah's, and they weren't too happy. He knew that he was disappointed with him and maybe even a little mad. But now he doesn't even care, he just wants to forget everything that happened with Caroline and start to live his life like he was supposed to.

He needs to begin his process of making his hybrids.

A/N: So? What do you think? Good? Bad? Please I need feedback!
