Chapter 21: Lightning in the sky.
"VHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU FAILED TO DEFEAT ZE AMERICANS!?" Samantha Maxis roared down the radio to General Shepherd, her blue eyes turning a deadly red.
"Temper, temper..." Queen Elizabeth muttered in the background, a faint smile tugging at her thinned lips.
"Get her out of here! Samantha hissed viciously to one of her guards. The soldier walked over to the Queen and escorted her out.
-"I am sorry Samantha, the Americans received unexpected help from the Canadians, there was nothing we coul-..." Shepherd began to explain over the radio.
"You had one of the biggest invasion forces ze world has ever seen at your command Shepherd, UND YOU DIDN'T EVEN MANAGE TO GET OFF THE COAST!" Samantha interrupted.
-"With all due respect Samantha, firstly we didn't know the defence capability of the Americans so we were going In blind, and secondly, concerning Boston city, if you hadn't of left one of your Mystery boxes around, then perhaps the Americans wouldn't have gained a Scavenger sniper rifle, which decimated our forces there" Shepherd tried to defend himself.
"ONE MAN VITH A SNIPER RIFLE SOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO STOP YOU IN YOUR TRACKS GENERAL. AS FOR THEIR DEFENSES, I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED ZHEM TO FALL LIKE THE COUNTRIES IN EUROPE!" Samantha screamed; "BUT NO! YOU COULDN'T EVEN GET OFF THE COAST LINE!" the girl gave a long sigh; "Bring what's left of the fleet back here and we'll see where we go from there. But Shepherd don't expect to get off this failure easily. Samantha out"
The demonic child sighed again and walked over her new bed room. Living in Buckingham Palace had its perks she found.
"You, read me a story!" She ordered one of the soldiers standing guard outside the door. The two walked into the room and Sam grabbed a book off the shelf; The Wizard of Oz. She handed it to the soldier, who sat in a chair beside her bed.
"Mister Monkey, hello" Sam greeted cheerfully to a zombified monkey that had climbed up to her window.
As the soldier read the book, Sam began drawing pictures of scenes from the book. The soldier came to the part where the flying monkeys were introduced, and as he read, Sam got a very devious idea.
"Ooooohhhh Mister Mooooonkey, come to Sam, she has big plans for you, hahahaha" the little girl sang, eyes turning a devilish red as she went to grab the undead ape, who gave a cry of horror.
It had been two days since Evan had woken from his mini-coma, and Doctor Ludvig Maxis had revealed himself to the team. Not much had happened over that time, other than that Price and the German President were making plans for the Heroes to move on in the next day or two. President Gauck had agreed that a German escort unit will fly the Heroes the rest of the way to Russia, he just needed to inform Poland and Belarus that there will be a German transport aircraft carrying high value individuals to Russia. They would use a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, which the Americans had lent the Germans.
As this was happening Doctor Maxis told the group more about himself and Samantha, much to Richtofen's disdain and chagrin, who secluded himself in his room, tinkering with the Wunderwaffe DG-2.
The team mainly stayed at the army barracks, but occasionally explored the city. However on the afternoon of the second day most of the team were sitting in the cafeteria having lunch. Rosie walked in tapping away at her tech buddy.
"Okay so here's the news on what's happening in the world" the brunette stated, placing her reading glasses over her eyes; "Things aren't going well in the south, France is under Sam's control, and her forces have begun to invade Spain and Italy. However the good news is that the Americans have been able to beat back the invasion fleet, finally a victory against the little bitch..."
"Zhey are faring better than us..." Luitennent General Emmerich Braun sighed, walking into the room, with Captain Price behind him.
"Why what's happening?" Soap asked.
"Belgium has fallen, und Samantha's armies have begun moving into Germany" Braun told them.
"Which means were going to have to get moving soon" Price added.
"Ve are arranging transport for you now as ve speak" Braun told them.
"Kind of a dick move don't you think? I mean us running away while you guys fight Samantha" Daniel said, leaning back and crossing his arms, brow furrowed.
"Ze President believes zhat you vill be more of a threat away from Samantha than here in Germany" Braun explained, a hint of annoyance in his gray eyes, as if he didn't agree with the German President's decision.
"How long do we have until Sam's armies reach Berlin?" Evan asked aloud.
"By my calculations, ve have four days until Samantha's forces reach us here, if zhey continue at their current pace" Doctor Maxis told the group through the tech buddy.
"Hopefully everything will be sorted and we'll have at least a two day lead against the girl?" Price stated, rubbing under his blue eyes, which had bags upon bags under them from many sleepless nights. Evan had to give it to the British Captain; the man was made of iron. He could easily walk into hell, play a game of cards against the devil himself and walk out as twice as rich.
The teenager looked out of the window and could see far off in the distances dark clouds in contrast to the sunlight. He knew that those clouds would reach Berlin soon and with them would bring death and destruction. Suddenly he felt despair, hopelessness, and his heart breaking as he thought about all that had already happened and what was going to happen. He, Daniel, Rosie, Lara, and Sadie had all been driven from their home and lives, their families split apart, running from the fury of a little girl of all things. Their country taken within hours. Evan had seen death and killed, using weapons he never thought he would ever need to use. For the first time in his life Evan realised the very true danger on his life and the lives of those he cared about.
He then looked around at the team, their rag tag team, from different times and places, and all of them game characters. Would they all have to keep running until there was now where left to go?
"Will we ever be able to stop Samantha?" The blue eyed teenager thought aloud. He felt a hand on his shoulder, looking up he saw Price looking at him.
"Or die trying" Price assured, fire in his eyes.
The rest of the day consisted of preparations for the coming journey. Food and drink was packed enough for the team to share over a few days, Nikolai was adamant that they packed at least five bottles of vodka. Ammo, grenades, and other equipment was provided for the team, and a squad of ten German soldiers were ordered to give military escort into Russia.
Evening came, and while some stayed up and talked, others turned in for the night. Lara lay on her bed staring up at the plain ceiling, thoughts speeding through her head as to what is going to happen next.
"Rosie, you awake?" She asked the young hacker, who was in a bed opposite hers.
"Mmm...? Yeah..." came Rosie's reply, sounding not tired but more distracted, however she sat up and looked at Lara, big blue eyes reflecting the faint moon light that was seeping into their room.
"What do you think is going to happen?" Lara asked, sitting up herself.
Rosie gave a small laugh of exasperation; "Probably more of the same stuff we've already been through: running for our lives, fighting Sam's army, more weird shit etcetera etcetera" Rosie shrugged nonchalantly.
"Do I come under ze weird shit'?" Doctor Maxis asked sounding amused, making the tech buddy light up.
"Oh Maxis you are the epitome of weirdness, especially since you've installed yourself on my tech buddy somehow" Rosie smirked, picking up the device.
"Hmph I'll take zhat as a compliment" Maxis laughed.
"Maxis, why do you and Edward have such a hatred for each other?" Lara asked, shifting her weight onto her elbow.
"It vasn't always like zhat" Maxis sighed; "zhere vas one time vhen I thought him as a son. But zhen Northern France happened, und after Group 935 disbanded ze first time ve became distant. Vhen I reformed 935, I invited Richtofen back to ze team, but time had changed both of us. A bitterness developed between us, und after he discovered zhat device on ze moon zhat vas vhen things truly broke down..."
"What happened in Northern France?" Rosie asked curiously.
"A disaster..." Maxis stated simply, but in a tone that said he didn't want to talk about it.
Rosie sighed, slightly disappointed. She had heard Dempsey, Richtofen, Takeo, and even Nikolai mention Northern France at some point, but each said that they couldn't remember what happened there. She had concluded that the four had some experience there in WW1, but they had forgotten the event. She looked at Lara who shrugged.
"Come now, you two should get some sleep. I sense zhat ve all have a tough few days coming up" Maxis told the two teenage girls.
"As if we've had it easy so far" Rosie said sarcastically, laying down and allowing sleep to envelop her. Lara too fell into unconsciousness.
Maxis sighed to himself. The two girls reminded him of how he wished Samantha would have grown. It was a cruel life she had lived and now the result of it all was hunting them down with an army from hell, rage, hate, and darkness filling her every fibre in her tiny being and her dark powers had driven her mad. The Samantha he once knew had transformed into something that he no longer recognised.
Maxis sighed again, leaving Lara and Rosie to sleep while he used the night to travel the electronics of the world to see what his former daughter was up too.
The next day was uneventful for the most part, other than that the team received news that everything would be ready for them to travel to Russia by the next evening and that they would leave the following morning.
Evan and Daniel spent most of their time in the firing range, sharpening their aim to a tee.
"Yes Evan! Well done!" Sgt. Foley clapped a hand on the boy's back.
Evan smiled as he looked at the targets on the range, each with head and vital chest shots from the Sniper rifle he had been training with.
"Now it's one thing to have good aim on a firing range, but it is another thing when you're out on the battlefield with unpredictable targets who fight back against you" Foley told him; "however from what I can see, I don't think that's gonna be an issue. You're a damn good shot kiddo"
The Ranger Sergeant walked over to Daniel, who was burst firing an LMG he borrowed from the range, not missing a single shot.
"Excellent Daniel, if you two keep this up then Samantha will learn to fear the Piper boys" Foley laughed, kneeling down to give Sadie, who was laying down, a pat on the head.
"Samantha has already taken notice of you, Rosie's und Lara's actions, und is determined to get you in her custody" Maxis told them all over the radio.
"Good, means we're not as weak as she thinks we are" Daniel grinned to his little brother.
"Too right Dan, wouldn't want her to think we're going soft on her" Evan smiled widely, fist pounding his older brother. The two placed their practice weapons back on the table and walked out of the building, Sadie at their heel.
"Please don't underestimate Samantha, she can be tenacious. Her forces are making quicker progress through Germany than I originally thought" Maxis told them.
"What do you mean Maxis? That we don't have as much time as we thought?" Evan asked the German scientist.
"Possible, I'm not sure yet. But as Sergeant Foley said, ze enemy can be unpredictable, so keep on your guard" Maxis answered warily.
"Will do, but Sam shouldn't underestimate us either" Daniel threw his arm over Evan's shoulder, wide grins on both of their faces.
As the day faded into evening, the team could sense a tension in the German army barracks. News was stating that Samantha's forces was moving across Germany like a tidal wave, taking every city, town and village in its path. The Netherlands too had been invaded and was quickly falling. Berlin itself was preparing for a fight, for the evil army was moving at a far more rapid pace than expected. When Belgium fell, so did NATO and the chain of command collapsed. Sam took advantage of the chaos and hit western Europe hard. Germany did not have the forces to stop the huge legions at Samantha's disposal. The President had ordered all available troops to prepare to defend Berlin.
Evan went to bed with all that in his head. As he fell into sleep, nightmares plagued his dreams.
He dreamt that Sam's army had reached Berlin and that battle was raging, screams of innocent people running in terror from the onslaught, streets turning into rivers of blood, sirens blaring, explosions booming through the violent air. He could see all his friends, Daniel, Rosie, Lara being executed right in front of his eyes, and then he felt the gun on his head and he looked death in the face.
The blue eyed young man was shaken awake by a frantic looking Daniel.
"Evan wake up! Get up we need to go, now!" The training soldier yelled.
As he got out of bed, and became more aware Evan realised with horror that part of his nightmares had come true.
Sirens were shrieking, and explosions were blasting in the city. Flashes of light pierced the dark as a barrage fired at the enemy planes in the sky and bombs tore into buildings.
Getting quickly dressed, and grabbing what he needed, Evan ran out into the corridor. People were rushing up and down it, worried or stern looks on their faces. Evan spotted Soap walking towards him.
"C'mon we're meeting in the courtyard" the Scotsman told him, grabbing his shoulder.
"What's happening? Where's Daniel, Rosie, Lara and Sadie?" Evan asked confused as they pushed their way through the crowded hallway.
"Samantha's forces have arrived earlier than expected. Daniel went on ahead with Sadie, and the girls are with the others!" Soap shouted over the deafening noise that was sounding outside.
"Shit! They weren't meant to get to Berlin for another day or two" Evan grimaced. As they made their way to the courtyard, they spotted Richtofen bursting out of his room, face looking livid. It was the first time that Evan had seen the Nazi scientist since Doctor Maxis had revealed himself.
"Argh all zhis noise is distracting me from mein vork!" The insane man moaned.
"Shut it Doc, get your kit together, Samantha's armies have reached Berlin, we're leaving!" Soap snapped, walking over to the Doctor.
"Ohohoho I am ready for Samantha, don't you vorry, for I have mein Bathilda here" Richtofen grinned wickedly, raising his Wunderwaffe DG-2 up and kissing it tenderly.
"We're not fighting, Richtofen, we're leaving" Soap told Edward with a glare.
"Fine, fine, let me just grab my diary" Richtofen pouted, walking into hia room and picking up a small book. He rejoined the other two and they continued their way to the courtyard, Richtofen holding the Wunderwaffe like his newborn baby.
They eventually arrived at the courtyard. Evan rushes over to his family, who were relieved to see him. Evan then walked over to Price who looked like he was conversing with Lt. General Emerich Braun.
"General, what in bloody hell is going on? I thought the enemy wasn't going to arrive for another few days!?" Price shouted over the noise.
"Zhey veren't, Captain, but zhey pushed through at a faster pace than expected!" Braun shouted back; "Ze President has order zhat ve evacuate you immediately. Hans here vill lead ze convoy to ze plane zhat vill take you to Russia!" The German gestured to a young soldier, who nodded.
"Alright, everyone, follow this soldier, we're getting out of here!" Price shouted to the group, before turning back to Braun; "We won't forget this. Thank you for everything you've done, and I promise we will come back" the British Captain shook the German General's hand, before following the rest of the group. Evan too began to follow Price, but was stopped by Braun who called him back. The German knelt down, a sad, but serious look in his eyes.
"Boy, live vell by zhese people. Don't forget ze real world though. Remember me vhen you come back, und remember zhat I told you I love Germany, und vould do anything to protect her" Braun told him.
"We will come back, I promise" was all Evan could bring himself to say. Shaking the General's hand, he turned and ran to catch up with the rest of the group who were getting into various military trucks.
"Evan you're in with me" Price called over to the young man. Evan ran over to the truck at the head of the group of vehicles, and climbed in the front with Price.
"How far away is the plane?" Price asked Sergeant Hans, who was in the driver's seat.
"About fifteen/twenty minutes' drive from here if ze road is smooth" Hans answered, stepping on the accelerator, and leading the convoy out of the barracks.
"Under my calculations you should have enough time to lift off before my daughter's forces arrive at ze airport" Maxis told them.
"Is the C-17 Globemaster equipped with weaponry?" Evan asked Hans.
"Ja, but ze men who vill take you to Russia are under strict command not to use zhem against any hostiles unless absolutely needed" Hans answered.
Evan sighed and clicked on his radio; "Rosie, Daniel, Lara you guys ok?" He asked the other three.
-"Yeah, all good here" Rosie answered sounding tired.
-"I'm fine sweetie, thank you" Lara also responded.
-"Man this whole thing has really hit the shit hasn't it?" Daniel growled.
"There's only so far Samantha can spread herself" Price told the older Piper brother.
After fifteen tense minutes of driving they finally arrived at the airport where the C-17 was waiting for them. Hans led the group to the German squad who were both piloting the plane and giving the team military escort.
"I'll leave you in these men's capable hands Captain!" Hans shouted over the noise.
"Why don't you come with us?" Price asked the soldier.
"I'm afraid I can't. I von't abandon my post sir, plus I have find my sister" Hans declined, beginning to walk back to the convoy.
"What's your sister's name?" Price asked as the Heroes began to board the giant aircraft.
"Gretta!" Hans called. The German soldier then turned and jogged to the convoy.
When the team had boarded the plane, and after doing a quick headcount, the C-17 Globemasters engines kicked into life. The plane sped down the runway, and lifted off, leaving the battle behind it.
Evan looked out of the window next to his seat and could see fierce fighting happening in the distant city. They had, had a close call there, but Evan couldn't stop himself from thinking about what General Bruan had told him.
After flying for a while, and learning that they were now flying over Poland and nearing Belarus, the tension eased, and the team began talking amongst themselves.
"Samantha is going to pay for this" Takeo growled as he, Lara, Rosie, Dempsey, and Ghost talked about Samantha's European take over.
"How the hell did she get so much power?" Ghost asked, astounded as they looked at Rosie's tech buddy, which the young hacker was using to keep and eye on updates.
"Little bitch has always been a bit OP, but since she brought us all here she's become even stronger" Dempsey tried to explain.
"I guess it's because she was designed that way as a game character" Lara mused.
"Yeah, well if ever I get to meet our 'creators' I'll kill 'em" Dempsey snarled.
"You're gonna have to get in line mate, because I'm having a crack at the bastards first" Ghost told the American, scratching his chin through his skull patterned balaclava.
"You will be cleaning up whatever I have left behind then" Takeo gave a small dark smile, drawing his katana and admiring the sheen of the samurai sword.
"Urgh all this talk of killing and death. Hasn't there been enough of it already?" Lara asked sadly.
"Yeah guys to be honest I'm a little tired of hearing about it too" Rosie added.
"Ah well, at least it's going to be smooth riding to Russia now" Dempsey sighed contentedly, leaning back in his chair and folding his arms behind his head.
"Uh, I don't mean to alarm anyone but it may not be as smooth as you think Dempsey" Dr. Maxis warned through the tech buddy.
Before Dempsey could ask what Maxis meant, he was distracted by a light thud on the outside of the plane window next to his seat. Jerking round to have a look, the Marine was stunned to see a zombified monkey plastered on the window, yellow eyes wide, mouth wide and drooling, and slowly sliding across the glass pane.
"What the fuck?" Dempsey asked, completely dumbfounded.
"Oh shit! Uh guys you might wanna look outside the fucking windows!" they heard Billy Handsome yell.
Dempsey peered out the window into the dark sky outside and could make out hundreds of glowing yellow dots. Then the true horror hit him. Zombie monkeys! Flying zombie monkeys with wings.
"You are fucking kidding me! Flying zombie fleabags!" The soldier cried out as the undead chimps began assaulting the plane. The German crew who were escorting the Heroes began shouting to one another and started manning the C-17s weapons.
"I always knew Samantha was a witch, but she didn't have to go as far as flying monkeys!" Evan yelled over the thumps of the monkeys attacking them and the machine gun fire of the plans guns.
Most of the team were standing up and staying away from the windows, except for Richtofen who was staring intently outside, amusement on his face.
"Oh how extraordinary! Zhis is a new one on me!" He cried out in happiness.
It was then at that moment that a monkey slammed into a window parallel to Nikolai, who was taking a swig of vodka. The Russia looked drunkenly at the ape on the window, and without thinking aimed his Olympia shotgun at the glass pane.
"Nikolai nooooooo!" Michael Rooker shouted, trying to make a grab for the shotgun, but too late. It was like it was all happening in slow motion. Nikolai pulled the trigger and sent shotgun pellets tearing into the window, shattering it, and killing the zombie monkey. Then everything sped up again.
"Oh shit! Everyone hold on!" Misty screamed as she and the others grabbed onto something solid, as the shattered window frame and part of the fuselage tore away from the plane as the aircraft de-pressurised creating a large hole in the plane. One of the German soldiers was unfortunate enough not to be holding onto something and was pulled out of the plane.
"Argh fuck!" Dempsey grunted, as the plane got used to the sudden change in atmosphere. Evan could see the plane wings from outside the hole and the undead monkeys attacking the aircrafts engines.
"Uh guys they're attacking the plane wings!" He yelled at the team.
"Bollocks they're trying to bring the plane down!" Price shouted.
"I have un idea!" Richtofen cried out with joy. He tossed the end of a rope to Nikolai the pilot and Rooker; "Don't let go of ze rope!" The Nazi ordered them, tying the other end of the rope around his waist. He then proceeded to goose step towards the breach in the plane, his hat blowing off behind him.
"Ladies und gentleman, I present to you, ze Wunderwaffe DG-2!" The insane man yelled, raising the wonder weapon and firing an electric ball into the monkey swarmed sky. A couple of seconds later and the sky was lit up with lightning as the Wunderwaffes electricity jumped from undead ape to undead ape.
"Ahahahahaha ZAP!" Richtofen cried in delight, a mad glint crawling into his emerald eyes. Another blast from the tremendous weapon saw another group of zombie monkeys fall from the sky.
"It's raining monkeys, hallelujah, it's raining monkeys! Hahahaha!" Richtofen sang, slick black hair blowing about in the wind, his face full of ecstasy; "Samantha zhis one is for you!" He yelled firing another burst into the sky, frying the swarm of zombified chimps. The Doctor reloaded the Wunderwaffe with incredible speed thanks to the effects of Speed cola. He then aimed back into the monkey choked sky and unleashed another powerful blast from his creation.
"THUNDERBOLTS UND LIGHTNING, VERY, VERY FRIGHTENING AHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Richtofen bellowed, looking like he had reached the peak of madness and insanity, a wide rictus grin almost splitting his face in half, green eyes sparking as they watched each zombie monkey's demise at the hands of the most powerful weapon in his hands.
So preoccupied with his own entertainment was Richtofen he failed to realise the monkey that had landed on the roof of the plane and had crawled to the breach and peered at the Nazi from above.
It was just about as Richtofen was about to send more electricity into the sky that the monkey dropped down onto the barrel of the Wunderwaffe, gave a loud screech and launched itself at the German's face. Richtofen gave a scream and fell back, dropping the Wunderwaffe on the floor.
"Argh get off me filthy little beast! Ohhh Eddie is going to make a nice fur purse out of you!" Richtofen spat, tearing the rotting ape of his face and inserting his scalpel into it's brain, killing it. Throwing the lifeless corpse to the floor, Richtofen frantically looked around for his beloved Wunderwaffe. He spotted it teetering precariously on the edge of the plane breach, held there only by a weak bent metal pipe.
"Argh, nein nein nein NEIN!" he screamed, crawling for the weapon like his life depended on it. However just as he was about to grab it, a monkey landed on the device, knocking it off the plane.
"Nooooooooooooooo!" Richtofen cried out in despair, as he watched his darling creation falling down to the earth below. Suddenly there was an explosion on one of the wings, and the entire plane jerked. Richtofen nearly fell out but regained his balance and stumbled back into the plane. Another explosion tore into the other wing.
"Fuck the little shits have taken out the engines!" The team heard Weasel shout.
"Everyone hold on, ve're going down!" One of the German pilots shouted.
"Aww here we go again!" Evan yelled as the plane fell out of the sky.

Keep reading and keep reviewing!
Reviews are like Cups of Tea. I like Cups of Tea.
OH, and one other thing. To Gen Edward Richtofen; it's always warming to the soul when a Reviewer mentions ME! It's lovely! Of Course, Richtofenking's does the majority of writing, but I'd like to think that I contribute in my own ways.
Richtofenking95: Uh more like all of the writing!
TsukiBooks: Fek off, and get creating, My Writing Slave! Do I have to sing the damn procrastination song again! "Your Procrastinating! Your Readers sit there waiting! For the next chapter to update!" – Literally, all I have sung to him in the last few weeks :D
