My eyes open to the sound of someone talking. The room is bright so it must be atleast 9 in the morning which means I have slept in again. Everyone must be downstairs, no-one stays asleep this long. "How is she?" I hear a female voice ask. I can tell be how far away it is that whoever is talking is downstairs. "Can he go home yet?" Its Mum.
"Its hard to tell at this moment. She's better but you can tell that she is angrier than normal. But anyway the reason that I'm here is to tell you that she isnt here this weekend, she is going to her sisters so Dad asked me to invite you, Katniss and Prim over to dinner tomorrow night. Obviously bring Peet along so that he can finally come home and dad says he should be able to stay until the reaping, its only 4 days away after all and dad wants to be with him." Now that was Leaven. Clearly his father was too busy over at the bakery. Rye is probably at school and so is Prim.
Me and Peeta havent really had to go to school. Every day since his mother lashed out, I have been battling a bad headache and Peeta has got over his concussion but is dealing with his broken arm. He says that he should go back to school but my mother wont let him. He has to go today anyway to clean out his locker. Everyone does it today. Its the last day of the year. Rye and Gale will be finishing shool today and if all goes well at the reaping, they will be able to get on with their life and not worry about it anymore.
"We would be happy to." I hear my mum say as I sit up in my bed. The door goes a couple minutes later and I look over to what is normally my mothers bed to find Peeta still sleeping. He looks peaceful and he's smiling. He must be dreaming about something really nice. The picture of him lying like that makes me want to just curl up next to him and fall asleep.
Now I've never thought of myself as a lucky person but when my mother shouts upstairs I feel pretty lucky. "Katniss, you awake?" I hear her shout and I tear my eyes away from Peeta just incase she is walking up.
"Yeh, what is it?" I ask.
"I'm just going out for a bit. When Peeta wakes up will you make sure that he puts his cream on and make sure you drink your drink please. I've left it on the side. Leave some for him too. I'll see you later!" I smile as I say goodbye and she leaves the house.
Pulling myself out of bed, I notice just how cold it is in here. Peeta must have opened the window whilst we where sleeping because I know he cant sleep unless its open. I quickly slide into Peeta's bed and wrap my arms around him. He stirs slightly and wraps his arms around my waist, pulling my head towards his chest and we both fall back asleep.
"Katniss!" I hear someone shout, bringing me out of my slumber. My eyes dart around the room quickly thinking that they can see us. I must have only been asleep for about an hour. "Katniss, you need to go to school. Come on get up." Prim shouts. Mum must still be out. I dont actually have to go to school, I dont have anything to clear out but I promised Peeta that I would go with him and help him carry everything back. Well back to mine because he still isnt allowed to his house so he has to put all of his stuff here. Its good though, he has drawing stuff in his locker so whilst he is locked up in my house, he atleast has something to do that he likes.
"I'm coming." I shout back, as quick as I can so that she doesnt come upstairs and I wont have to move. I hear her footsteps as she walks away and I turn back to Peeta. "Peeta? I know you're awake." I mumble, stroking my index finger down the side of his face. His eyes peal open and he turns to me, kissing me on the nose. "We have to go to school."
He sighs and I cant help but laugh. "I guess we better get up then." He says and I nod. "I miss this." He hugs me tighter. This is the first time that me and him have had alone time since he lived at his house. "One day, me and you are going to move out and we wont have to deal with anyone else. It will just be me and you." My heart flutters at the image of me and Peeta owning our own house. Being a married couple. Eating meals together, sleeping in the same bed every night, kissing eachother whenever we want.
"I'd like that." I mumble, reaching up and kissing him.
"Katniss!" We both jump apart as quickly as we can but its to late, Prim has seen us. "Peeta! Whats going on?" I turn to her, pulling myself up in the bed, Peeta does the same and we are both just sitting there staring at her, no words being shared between us. "Are you two..."
I nod, not really knowing what to say. "Prim, its not a big deal." Peeta says behind me. "Yes, me and Katniss are dating, we didnt want anyone to know just yet." Prim's face holds nothing but shock.
"Prim, you cant tell anyone. No-one knows." I say loudly.
"How long?" She asks, a smile appearing on her face. "How long have you two been together?"
"Just over 3 months, since the day before my birthday." I say to her.
The smile grows wider across her face and she starts moving towards us, jumping up on the bed and wrapping her arms around me. "I am so happy for you guys." She pulls away from me and hugs Peeta. "So nobody else knows?" I now that this is probably too huge to keep to herself and she isnt very good at keeping secrets which means we will have to tell everyone else soon before she tells them all.
I laugh slightly. "Rye knows but thats it. He's been a big help at making sure no-one else found out." Peeta says to her.
"This is so huge! Does Gale know?" She asks me. I shake my head. Its probably going to be a long time before I tell Gale, I'm not sure how he would take it considering he doesnt like Peeta all that much anyway and how I reacted when I found out about him and Delly. I've been keeping my relationship a secret a lot longer than he did and me and Gale never have secrets.
After a lot of questions from Prim and her eyes on me whilst I get changed, we finally all set off for school, Prim still bustling with excitement. She is constantly staring at our intwined hands, not believing it. Her eyes almost pop out of her head when I kiss him. Its rather funny actually, I have to pull away from Peeta early just to laugh at her. He laughs too and before long we are walking round the corner to the school, I drop Peeta's hand and move to stand beside Prim so it looks less obvious. Peeta walks on the other side of Prim just as we get through the gates.
A couple faces look our way and I have to stifle a laugh, I forgot how much people here hate me right now because of Peeta. Oh if only they knew that I was dating the guy that every girl wants to be with, I would have fists being thrown at me all over the place. "Katniss, I'll see you when I get home tonight." Prim says with a smile and runs off to find Rory and Lilly.
"Shall we go?" Peeta asks from my side and I nod, following him through the doors of the school.
Everyone around seems excited about the fact that its the last day and I cant help but smile. Even though the last day means that its almost the reaping, It also means that I only have 2 years left of school and the reaping. Peeta too. I cant wait untill its all over and follow what Peeta said this morning about me and him moving out. I cant wait to wake up to him every morning, in his arms. I look up at him and I want so much to kiss him right there and I seriously think about doing it, not caring what anyone thinks until I'm startled by the school bell.
The people around us filter quickly into classes and I look up at Peeta. "You dont know how much I have wanted to do this." I say to him and with the confused look on his face, I pull him towards me and kiss him right there in the empty school hallway.
When he pulls away first, he still has his hands on my waist and that far away look in his eyes that he has every single time that we kiss. "What do you say, considering that its our last day, we go to our classes?" He asks and for some reason I dont even have to think about it. I nod with a smile. On the last day, all lessons are fun, a sort of cheer up for the reaping. It normally works though so its good to go to them. Its the only day a year at school that isnt boring.
"Lets go. I dont have any stuff though." I say to him and within seconds, he has reached into his locker and grabbed 2 writing pads and a pack of pencils. I knew he had a lot of stuff in here but wow. "Well lets get to class."
First lesson is Mr White, who we literally only have for this lesson a week. He's alright though, not like Mrs Myers who shouts at us every single lesson. Peeta steps through the door first, using his good arm to open the door whilst I hold his bag. "Ah, Mr Mellark, I wasnt aware that you and Miss Everdeen would be in today." He says and all the eyes in the classroom are on us. Mine rest on Gina though, that smug little grin on her face, I feel like this is a very good time for revenge, so I just smile at her and grab Peeta's hand. He looks down at me, confused and I motion to Gina who is almost a red colour and might aswell have steam coming out of her ears. I guess thats that, everyone in school is going to know about me and Peeta after the day has done.
"Yeh, me and Katniss only came to clean out my locker but we decided to come to class as its the last day." Peeta says to Mr White and I drop his hand again. Only to steady my books though, after that I grab it again.
"Well, take a seat then and we can get started." Mr White says and Peeta walks ahead of me, taking his back and dropping my hand. Luckily our normal desk is untouched so we can sit back there.
As we sit throught that lesson, I cant get rid of the smile that is plastered on my face. Mainly because of Peeta's hand that is constantly on my leg, sending shivers throughout me. Also because of Gina's face. All lesson she has been staring at me and I cant help but feel very triumphant.
When the lesson finishes, Gina runs out of the room so fast I dont even see her leave. I'm just pulling on my small cardigan when Delly appears at the end of our table. "I knew there was something going on between you two." She says with a small smile on her face.
Peeta is the first one to speak up. "Yes Dell. We are dating. I'd say dont tell anyone but now that Gina knows, I bet everyone in the district knows by now. She has probably been screaming it down the halls." He laughs and I cant help but laugh.
"I'm so happy for you." Delly says, giving Peeta a hug. "You finally got the girl you always wanted." He huhs her back. "And Katniss, this guy right here is the most perfect guy ever." He pushes her away and laughs whilst I just stand there and nod. "Anyway, I've got to go and find Gale. I'll see you soon." We both nod and she dissapears.
I look at Peeta and I'm suddenly really scared about how Gale is going to take this whole thing. Peeta takes my hand though and it changes my mood as usual. "Goodbye Mr White." I say to the teacher as we leave.
"Good luck at the reaping Miss Everdeen and have a good holiday you two." We both nod as we leave the door, out into the busy hallway and more eyes are on us than there where before.
The next lesson, is actually history of Panem, but the teacher brings in the art supplies and we all paint for the lesson, which makes Peeta happy as he always has a smile on his face. I however, cant paint at all and mine ends up looking like a big brown smudge, I was going for a dandelion but that didnt happen. Peeta laughs at me drawing and presents me with a nice painting af a dandelion.
About 35 minutes into the lesson, Gina appears. A smile on her face. "I'm happy for you guys." Is all she says, with a hint of sarcasm in her voice. Thats when she 'accidently' spills Peeta's paint all over the painting of the dandelion and his drawing book which he has had for years. She bids us goodbye after 'apoligising' and walks away to stand with Lavender again. Me and Peeta both end up running for the sink but we can only salvage a couple of pictures, the rest of it has to go in the bin.
Finally break appears and we dissapear to our bench outside where we thought we could be alone but then Gale walks out of the school doors and heads our way. I brace myself for whatever abuse he has just as he gets infront of us. "When where you going to tell me?" He asks, a hint of anger in his voice. "How long have you two been together for?" His hands our now on his hips. "Why did I learn about your relationship off Delly?"
I sit forward to look at him properly and I note how he is looking everywhere but at Peeta. "Gale, listen, nobody knew until today. I'm sorry that I didnt tell you earlier but I didnt know how. We have been dating since the day before my birthday."
"3 Months! You've been dating for 3 months and you never told me!" He shouts, drawing the attention of a couple people near by. "And to him! You should have been with me Katniss! That was the way it was supposed to be not Bread Boy!"
Thats when I really lose any sort of control I had. "He is called Peeta!" I pull myself up standing infront of him. "How in the hell could I have been with you. You broke that plan when you started dating Delly and you know what? She deserves someone a whole lot better than you!" I know I stepped over the line but I dont care. "If you think that you can come over here and just insult Peeta like that then you must be messed up in the head or something Gale because I thought my choices mattered to you!" Quite a lot of people are looking at us now.
"They do mean something to me and that why I'm telling you that you made a horrible choice!" He shouts pointing at Peeta.
I think now its my turn to have steam coming out of my ears. "No! Choosing you would have been the worst choice! I cant believe I ever thought that I was gonna marry you someday. I never loved you Gale just deal with that!" He looks like he is about to say something else but then he leaves. I turn to Peeta, calming myself. My head starts pounding. "I think I've had enough of school for the day." I mumble, massaging my head.
"Right, lets go and get my stuff and lets get back to yours. Your mother will be able to conjour up another drink for your headache." He says and leads me inside.
On the way to Peeta's locker, we get a couple of people we know asking us if we are infact dating. River, one of Peeta's friends laughs, not believeing us but still says he's happy for us. Madge all but cries. Just as we make it to his locker, Eric shows up. My hold on Peeta's good hand becomes critical as I try to keep myself up and conscious. "I just heard." Even just his voice brings shivers down my spine. "Good job Mellark, you're gonna have hours of fun with this one. She is reallt good if you know what I mean." Peeta is not squeezing my hand in anger. I think everyone knows what he means. "Anyway I've got to go." He skulks off down the hallways.
"I'm gonna kill that son of a bitch." Peeta says through gritted teeth. I take him by the shoulders and force him to look at me. "Katniss did you hear what he just said?"
I nod. "I know Peeta but if you kill him, you'll go to jail." He sighs and closes his eyes. "Where are you? Are you here with me? Peeta?" His eyes open again and he smiles. "Can we get home, I cant feel my legs at all." He nods. Everytime I run into Eric, I loose the feeling in my both my legs and I get the shakes and Peeta knows this so we leave as quickly as we can. I dont see Prim when we leave the school yard, I guess she is somewhere with Rory and Lilly. They probably know by now because Prim isnt good at keeping secrets from them two.
