The Ruins Part 5

Blue Team

"So want to explain to me why exactly we are going back to a place we watched crumble to the ground in ruins?" Carter leaned over and whispered to his co-pilot Carson. He didn't want anyone to overhear him. Everyone else seemed to have forgotten about this fact.

Carson shrugged and shook his blonde fringe out of his eyes, "Who knows, there might be something salvageable."

However much his friend thought he hid it, Carter had still caught the glance he sent in his sister's direction. Remembering Brooke's powers it suddenly dawned on him that Carson was hoping she would have a vision while sifting through the wreckage.

The plane touched down and Jake bounded down the ramp in his beloved golden retriever form, he was hoping to sniff out something helpful.

"Come on guys," Alex encouraged everyone else to exit the plane. Tyler grumbled and reluctantly followed his brother, not really seeing the point of this excursion.

Brenda picked up an ornamental statue that had once been on the mantelpiece in the living room. A souvenir from one of her Dad's many travels. Then, it crumbled to dust in her hands the damage from the fire too great.

Well at least no bodies were found, Dylan thought morosely.

Brittany shivered, not from the cold, her thoughts paralleled Dylan's. A poem suddenly came to mind that she had read, well been forced to read for class. It had to do with death by fire and ice and which was better. She definitely had to side with ice, not that ice could really kill her, but she couldn't begin to imagine what it would be like to burn to death, suffocating in your own skin, your insides melting.

"You alright," she jumped as Kelsey put a hand on her shoulder.

"Yeah," she nodded, not wanting to share her thoughts.

Brooke suddenly gave a little gasp and lurched.

A well-built man with shaggy blonde hair flew around the room. When he landed, she could see the electrodes attached to his bare chest and the doctors around the room monitoring him, armed guards at the door warily watching him.

The man gasped for breath, obviously drained and tired.

"Get up mutie," a man in army fatigues whacked him across the back with his nightstick and when he still wouldn't get up he pulled out some odd looking device and pressed a button on it. Once the button was pressed the mutant jolted as an electric shock pulsed through him, originating from the garishly orange collar around his neck.

He unsteadily got to his feet and pushed off the ground, yet he didn't make it that far before flopping back down to the ground.

"Take him back to his cell," the guards converged on him and hauled him out of the room.

"Dad!" Brooke all but shouted drawing everyone's attention.

"What is it?" Carson ran over to his younger sister, "What did you see?"

"It was Dad…" she had tears running down her face, "they-they were experimenting on him, tor-torturing him," she sobbed.

Carson pulled her to him in a hug and rubbed her back soothingly, "Shh, we'll get him back."

"Did you see where they were?" Rachel asked, but Carson shot her a look and shook his head, not now.

"Lets go," Carter led the way back to the jet, there was nothing there.

Jake howled in mourning.
