Rory Williams stood outside the Pandorica feeling unbelievably bored. He wished he had taken the Doctor's Vortex Manipulator. He'd passed the first century by talking to Amy but he'd run out of things to talk about. The Roman Empire had fallen. Rory didn't know enough about history to tell which Empire came next.
"Hey, soldier man!" called a voice and a girl, about eleven years old, skipped towards him, smiling brightly. The Pandorica had been moved from Stonehenge to a large hill overlooking a village. The villagers had been curious but wary. This girl was the first person who had actually come to investigate.
"Hello," Rory mumbled, "Who are you?"
"Kara," the girl said happily and curtsied, "What's your name?" Rory hesitated. It had been so long since he had said his name that it took a moment for it to come to him.
"Rory," he said finally.
"Lovely name," Kara said and bounded to the Pandorica. Rory touched his sword and the girl faltered, fear flashing in her brown eyes.
"What are you trying to do?" asked Rory suspiciously.
"I just want to look," Kara said eying his sword nervously. Rory took his hand away from the hilt of his sword and nodded but watched closely as she stroked the Pandorica, examining it closely, "What is this?"
"It's called the Pandorica," Rory said, "My girlfriend's in there."
"Why?" asked Kara.
"Because she's essentially dead," Rory said bitterly, "The Pandorica is keeping her from dying." Kara went all the way around the box.
"Isn't there any way inside?" she asked.
"Yes," Rory said, "but it's very difficult unless you have a Sonic Screwdriver."
"A what?" Kara asked.
"A Sonic Screwdriver," Rory said, "I guess you'd say it's like a magic wand."
"Who has it?" asked Kara, "We could steal it and get your girlfriend out." Rory smiled.
"A friend has it," he said, "And no, we're not going to steal it."
"So you're waiting for him?" asked Kara.
"Sort of," said Rory, "But it's a very long wait."
"How long?" Kara asked.
"About another one thousand, nine hundred years," Rory said. Kara stared in disbelief.
"Are you a god?" she asked looking nervous again. Rory chuckled.
"No," he said, "I'm just…unique. The last of my kind."
"The Last Centurion?" asked Kara. Rory nodded and smiled. He liked the sound of that.
Kara visited Rory often. They got to know each other intimately. Kara kept visiting for years. The years turned into decades. Rory never cheated on Amy, partly because he was made of plastic so he couldn't do so anyway, but he told Kara things that he wouldn't tell anyone else perhaps not even Amy. He felt sad as he watched Kara getting older. She never married or had children. Rory realised that she was in love with him. But his heart belonged to someone else. Kara accepted that.
One day Rory thought he heard the TARDIS. Kara, who was now sixty years old, lay beside him. She was dying.
"Look," she whispered, "Is that the blue box?" She pointed at the sky and when Rory looked up he saw the TARDIS flying overhead.
"Yes," he said, "But it's too early. The Doctor's just passing through."
"Rory," said Kara quietly, "You won't forget me will you?" Rory kissed her forehead. He suddenly realised that it was exactly the sort of thing the Doctor would have done.
"Never," he said.
To his surprise a woman identical to Kara popped up a century later. She kept him company. Then she appeared in another century. And another. And another. Her appearances always coincided with an appearance from the Doctor although normally it was a Doctor Rory hadn't met and most of the time he didn't even realise who he was due to his different incarnations. However Rory did realise he had found someone extraordinary. Kara and her copies were the only reason Rory didn't lose his mind in his two thousand year wait. He had no idea how she kept coming back to life but he was grateful beyond measure that she was there to keep him company.
When he heard Oswin Oswald's voice in the Dalek Asylum, Rory was reminded of Kara and her copies. He asked the Doctor if they would rescue Oswin which was a name she hadn't used in her previous encounters with Rory. The Doctor misinterpreted him and said they didn't have a choice.
Oswin died anyway just like every other version of Kara that Rory had met.
