"What do you think they're talking about?"
I decided to lie. "I don't…"
"You say 'I don't know,' I'll send you flying when I become a vampire." Bella said with venom.
I looked at her surprised. She was getting good at detecting when something was wrong. 'Another latent power maybe,' I thought. She was getting good at reading me at least. I sighed, knowing that not telling her would probably just make things worse, rather than better. "Jake said something in his head. Edward heard, and well…this won't be pleasant by any means Bells."
"I don't care. If it helps the baby, I'll do whatever it takes. You of all people should know this."
'Damn, she is getting good.' "All right, all right I give. Jake said that the baby just wanted death and blood, blood and death. Edward's thinking…"
"That the baby is thirsty?"
"That pretty much sums it up. So, yeah."
"Then I'd have to…"
"The words 'I told you so' come to mind right now," I told her sarcastically.
"You're an ass." She said. Sounding like the Bella we used to know.
Just then, Edward, Carlisle, and Rosalie came back in. They were at her side with me, almost surrounding the hospital bed she was on.
"What's going on?" Bella asked in a scratchy voice.
"From the sounds of things, Adrian already told you." Rose said pompously.
I glared at her. "Rose, I told you cut it out. If I tell Emmett what you've really wanted to do, what would you think he'd do, hmm?"
"You wouldn't." She glared back.
I leaned forward a little. "Try me."
"Can you two save it for later?" Edward asked us.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jake look at Rose and I, and Edward gave the slightest of nods, confirming a question he must've had. I watched Jake smirk.
"He did say something, something about me drinking blood?"
He took her hand in his, the one that wasn't over her huge belly. "Bella, love, we're going to ask you to do something monstrous, repulsive."
"If it's going to help the baby, then I'm all for it."
"We know. Your condition—both of your conditions—are deteriorating rapidly. We don't have time to waste, to come up with more palatable ways to do this. The fastest way to test the theory—"
She looked at me, and I nodded. Sealing what she figured out. "I have to drink it." She gave a slight head bob. "I can do that. Practice for the future, right?"
We watched as her colorless lips stretched into a faint grin as she looked at Ed and me. I smiled back. Ed didn't.
The entire time this was going on, Rosalie was tapping her foot impatiently. It was getting irritating. I was contemplating punching her through the wall.
"So who's going to catch me a grizzly bear?"
Edward, Carlisle, and I exchanged a quick glance. Rose stopped tapping her foot.
"What?" Bella said slightly amused at her little joke.
"Um, Bella," I started. "We can't…"
"What Adrian is trying to say Bella, is that it will be a more effective test if we don't cut corners on this," Carlisle explained.
"If the fetus is craving blood," Ed explained, "it's not craving animal blood."
"It won't make a difference to you, Bella. Don't think about it," Rose chimed in.
Bella's eyes went as wide as dinner plates. "Who?" her gaze flickered to Jake.
"I'm not here as a donor, Bells." He grumbled. "Sides, its human blood that things after, and I don't think mine applies here."
"I wouldn't worry about it too much Bella," I told her. "They have blood on hand for you. You know, just in case."
"It's going to be fine. We have a good feeling about this. We think the baby will be so much better."
Bella's hand ran across her stomach. "Well, I'm starving, so I'll bet he is too." She tried her best at making a joke. "Let's go for it. My first vampire act."
Carlisle and Rosalie were off in a flash, darting upstairs. Edward and I stayed. Where everyone else was, I had no clue. I was still silently praying that Bella would get better quicker. She looked so, fragile. She was worse today than she was the first few times I saw her. The first time I saw her was when her and Edward came home. The bump was there, just not as pronounced as it was now.
Then, during their first week home, it grew bigger, and she grew weaker. I honestly wanted to tell them, but I knew, deep down, that I couldn't. If I tried, nothing would've come out the way it should. I don't know how I knew this, but I did none the less. During that week, before Edward became the burning man, he thanked me for the first part of Breaking Dawn. He gave all of the books that I gave him back, and then they just circulated. It was surprising how all of them were just so entranced in the series.
Even though it was about them. Then I had an idea. "Hey Jake," I called.
"What is it rubber man?"
I rolled my eyes at his nickname for me. "I have a few books you just might be interested in."
"I'm not a big reader."
I turned to leave for my old room. "Oh but you'll love these, just sit tight."
"Sure sure."
I went and unlocked the safe. I was surprised that it wasn't tampered with. I took out Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and the first part of Breaking Dawn. I looked at the original, and debated on whether or not to give him Bella's story, and part of his. I turned the thought away since it would probably make him go nuts. Reading about what you were thinking only moments before would make anyone go off the deep end.
I closed it, and handed him the books. "You might like these Jake. I hope you understand."
He looked at the books. I saw his eyes widen at New Moon because he was standing there with Bella, and Edward was in the moon, the shore line behind them.
I smiled. "You might like that one the most. You can get a peek inside her head now. But, I want them back the same way I gave them to you. Alright Jacob?"
"Y-yeah, sure, whatever you say."
"Not clear, Rosalie," Edward said.
Bella looked curious. My brother just shook his head at her. Then Rosalie blew through the room and disappeared again.
"This was your idea?" Bella whispered at Jake. Her voice sounded as rough as sandpaper.
"Don't blame me for this one. Your vampire was just picking snide comments out of my head."
"A comment that very well could save both of their lives," I added.
He looked at me, his face looking similar to Edward's burning man expression.
"I didn't expect to see you again," my sis told him.
It seemed to snap him out of it as he turned and said, "Yeah, me, either."
"Edward told me what you had to do. I'm sorry."
"S'okay. It was only a matter of time till I snapped over something Sam wanted me to do."
"And Seth," she whispered.
"He's actually happy to help. That and the fact that he is able to see Bree is a bonus."
"I hate causing you trouble."
"Ha! Where've I heard that before?"
Bella sighed. "I guess that's nothing new, is it?"
"No, not really."
"You don't have to stay and watch this," she said.
"I don't really have anywhere else to go," he told us. "The wolf thing is a lot less appealing since Leah joined up."
"Leah?" I heard Bree.
"You didn't tell her?" Jake turned to me.
I just shrugged. "I didn't think she needed to worry about her too. She is like a sister after all. Besides, I'm like a father to Seth. I don't know if Leah thinks the same or not. If she does, she hasn't said anything."
"But, why," Bella asked.
"To keep an eye on Seth," Jake said.
"But Leah hates us," she whispered.
"Leah's not going to bug anyone. Besides, she can't stand the fact that Seth and I are in her head; also the fact that Seth thinks about Bree almost all the time slightly bugs her. She's in my pack now," Jake grimaced. "So she follows my lead."
I took a look at Bella, and she didn't appear convinced.
"You're scared of Leah, but you're best buds with the psychopath blonde?"
There was a low hiss coming from the second floor.
"I'd watch it Jake. You might lose something valuable."
"I'd like to see her try," he said getting my innuendo.
"Don't. Rose…understands."
Jake snorted. "She understands that you're gonna die and she doesn't care, s'long as she gets her mutant spawn out of the deal."
I had about enough. So I went and punched Jake in the face. I was satisfied by the nice crunch of his nose. "I've had about enough of this Jake!"
"You understand nothing about Rosalie, and yet you berate her for wanting a child?" I then got an idea. I went over and grabbed Eclipse from the floor, and turned to chapter 7. "Read the chapter, then come and get me. Either that or you can leave. Am I understood?"
"Fine, whatever," he said taking the book. "I sure hope that you have eyes in the back of your head," he threatened.
"Fine by me." I grabbed my keys and went for a drive.
