"I looked everywhere."
"What, you think someone stole it?" Stefan asked over the phone.
"Yeah, someone definitely took my stuff."
"Want me to pick you up?"
"I'm just gonna check on Jeremy before I go to the hospital, can you meet me there?"
"You bet," he answered enthusiastically.
"Okay, I'll see you later, Stefan." Elena hung up the phone before unlocking her front door. Caroline had gotten into a car accident with Matt and Tyler and was hospitalized, but the other two were completely fine, minus a few bruises on Matt.
She stepped inside and closed the door behind her, stepping below the stairs. "Jeremy? Are you up?" A noise from the kitchen caught her attention, a noise like bowls and plates being shuffled about.
She walked curiously into the kitchen when she heard grunts of pain. When she scanned the kitchen and looked down, she saw John lying on the floor, covered in blood. Elena gasped and ran to his side. She grabbed a cloth from the counter and pressed it into his wound; panic washed over her. She quickly grabbed the phone and dialed the emergency number. "911, what's your emergency?"
"I-I-I need an ambulance, to uh, 2104 Maple Street," she stuttered out. She glanced down at John, who was looking panicked and staring beyond her. He was trying to breathe out words but she couldn't make it out. "What?"
"Behind you," he stammered.
Elena gasped and dropped the phone, spinning around quickly to scan the kitchen. There was no one there. She took the bloody knife used to harm John and got up to investigate. She walked cautiously, her senses on high alert and adrenaline pumping through her veins. She peered into each room and stepped quietly through the house.
A noise sounded from behind her, like a fast moving gust of wind. She swung quickly around and saw nothing. She knew this was a vampire, no human could move this fast, this quietly. She held the knife up, taking a few more cautious steps forward. Another gust of wind sounded from her left and she spun around quickly, seeing nothing, before another gust came from behind her. When she turned around, she saw a figure standing in front of her and stabbed the knife forward as a defensive reflex.
Her heart was pounding in her ears and she had trouble focusing for a moment. When she truly saw that the person standing in front of her was Katherine, she quickly retreated backwards.
"Oh my god, what are you doing here?" Elena asked, alarm sounded in her voice and confusion in her eyes. The vampire just stood, a look of annoyance in her features. Katherine glanced down at her own stomach and Elena's eyes followed. She gasped when she saw that she had pierced the knife into the vampire's body. "Shit," Elena mumbled. Elena let go of the knife and Katherine wrapped her fingers around the hilt and pulled it out, with barely a wince. "I'm sorry, I didn't- what are you doing here?" she asked again.
Katherine glanced down at her attire and touched the wound curiously, blood coming up on her fingers. She was wearing a black top and a black leather jacket that goes to her elbows, her hair falling in light curls and she was wearing black jeans with boots. The blood didn't show on the black, but she still looked disgusted. "I really liked this top," she frowned.
"What are you doing here?" Elena asked, more forcibly.
A mischievous glint appeared in the vampire's eyes as a smirk spread across her face. "I'm here on a house call," she said. "You know, after making out with one of your vampire boyfriends; well, my ex-boyfriend to be exact."
"You… You kissed Damon?" A wave of jealousy crashed over Elena, but she tried to push it back down, but she couldn't mask it in time.
Katherine's smirk widened. "You're jealous. Good."
Elena bit the inside of her cheek. "A house call. You stabbed John," she stated matter-of-factly. Elena took another step back, putting more distance between herself and the vampire.
"I did. Cut off his fingers too."
"He's my father! You stabbed my father!" Elena yelled out. She didn't feel any daughterly bond with John, but the thought of losing another father just didn't rub her the right way. Katherine shrugged in response. "You knew? You knew he was my father and knowingly stabbed him?" Anger boiled over within the human.
"Of course I knew. He's pretty douchey though. You're welcome," she responded happily. Elena roughly shoved the vampire, even though she didn't move more than an inch.
Katherine let out a dry laugh; "you're hot when you're mad. I like this look on you." Elena couldn't help the rush of heat to her face in response. The vampire took a step forward, but Elena didn't move. Katherine cocked her head and narrowed her eyes. "Maybe I shouldn't have compelled you to forget," she mumbled, mostly to herself.
"Forget what?" Elena asked, panicked.
Katherine's smirk fell, leaving a blank expression in its place. The two stared at each other for a long moment. John has been all but forgotten in Elena's mind; she knew the ambulances would be here soon anyway. It seemed like every time Katherine and Elena began to get close, Katherine would do something extreme to push her away, keeping her at arms length. Elena felt a sense of déjà vu with those thoughts but ignored it. She searched the vampire's eyes and only noticed the zoned out look in them. Katherine was looking through her, rather than at her.
Elena felt her anger slightly subside.
"Why'd you do it?" Elena whispered.
Katherine snapped back to her current situation. "Do what?"
"Stab John, kiss Damon."
"I'm a vampire," she replied, as if that were all the explanation needed.
"Stefan's a vampire, Damon's a vampire; you don't see them stabbing people at random."
"No, they just flat out eat people. I'm far classier than that," Katherine said. She looked towards the door and back to Elena with a sly smile. "Seems like we have a guest."
The door swung open and Stefan rushed in, "Elena, I saw the ambulances coming towards your street so I-," Stefan paused, frantically glancing between the two girls. Elena was surprised Katherine hadn't sped away. "Katherine," he snarled. He rushed forward and grabbed Katherine by the neck, throwing her against the wall with his fangs elongated and his grip tight.
"Feel better?" Katherine asked nonchalantly.
Stefan threw her across to the other wall with his hand grappling her neck. "Stefan, stop!" Elena yelled.
Stefan looked over at Elena with confusion. "Wha-"
Katherine grabbed his wrist and twisted it behind is back and kicked him to the ground. "Katherine!" Elena ran over to Stefan who was lying on the ground and he pushed himself up and realigned his bones in his wrist. The human helped him up to his feet. "What are you doing?" She asked angrily.
"What? He attacked me," she shrugged.
Stefan stood and glanced around looking cautious, "why do I smell blood? Are you okay, Elena?" He scanned Elena quickly, looking for any signs of an injury and saw blood on her hands.
"It's John," Elena started.
"I stabbed him," Katherine finished, with a proud smile.
Stefan stood in front of Elena protectively. "I told you not to trust her, Elena. She's deadly and she will kill you the second she doesn't need you anymore."
"You hold me in such high regards." Katherine stepped forward and placed a hand against his chest, caressing him. "I would never do something like that. You should know that, Stefan," she said innocently.
Stefan stood his ground, not giving into the vampire's touch. "What are you doing here, Katherine?"
"For you, of course," she smiled up at him, leaning in closer to him. "I missed you, what else?"
Elena turned away from the scene, not wanting to witness it. Between Katherine's actions with Damon and now Stefan, she would much rather leave than stand here. She saw in the corner of her eye that Katherine glanced towards her and her smile faltered. Katherine stepped back from Stefan, removing her hand from his chest.
"Well, this has been fun," Katherine said, moving around Stefan.
Elena kept her eyes averted towards the floor, biting her lip to ease the annoyance and jealousy swirling within her. She heard footsteps and risked a glance up; Katherine was walking past her and as she was walking past, Katherine subtly looked over at Elena. The vampire held a brief moment of eye contact before she sped out of the house.
Katherine's emotions were clearly displayed in her eyes, emotions that Elena didn't think she'd see in the vampire: Sadness and a silent apology.
