Chapter 21
Gaby looked up as Scott, Stiles, and Allison sat up in their tubs gasping for air.
"I saw it!" Scott exclaimed "I know where it is."
"Yeah," Stiles agreed "we passed it. There was this stump. This huge tree. Well, it's not huge anymore. It was cut down. But it's still big though, very big."
"It was the night we were looking for the body," Scott said looking at the blonde.
"Yeah, the same night you were bit by Peter."
"I was there too, in the care with my mother. We almost hit someone," Allison added.
"It was me," Scott told her "You almost hit me. We can find it." Gaby, Deaton, Lydia, and Isaac all gave each other a look before looking back at the three. "What?" Scott asked.
"You guys were out a long time," Isaac answered.
"How long is a long time?" Stiles asked.
"Sixteen hours," Deaton sighed.
"We were in the water for sixteen hours?" Scott asked.
"And the full moon rises in less than four."
"I have to go," Gaby sighed.
"What? Why?" Scott asked.
"You remember when I told you Derek was about to do something stupid? I haven't been able to get ahold of him or any of the Hales…I even tried Peter. I need to go see what's going on?"
Scott nodded "You didn't have to stay."
"I needed to make sure all of you got out of this alive."
"You should go."
"I am call me if you need anything." Gaby smiled and sprinted out the door. Nearly ten minutes later the blonde was throwing the loft door open. She noticed Derek sitting by the window and Cora holding a water bottle to his lips. Gaby ran towards the two of them and kneeled next to Derek as Cora tipped water down his throat. He coughed and looked towards Cora "You're okay."
Gaby and Cora smiled and Cora answered "I'm doing much better than you are right now. All because of you."
"Hopefully not all for nothing," Peter sighed looking out the window.
"How long have you been here?" Derek asked Gaby ignoring the older Hale.
The blonde looked at him with a look of shame "Like a minute…I was morally obligated to stay with them. I drowned Scott and nearly killed him…I just had to make sure he didn't actually die." All three Hales looked at the blonde with wide eyes. She looked at all of them "He was on board with it…and he's not dead in case I wasn't clear." After a few moments of silence Gaby cleared her throat "Someone say something please."
"The moon is rising, Derek," Peter said.
"Not exactly what I was looking for, but alright we'll go with it."
Peter shot the blonde a look "You drained your battery all the way to the red and there is a fully charged Alpha on her way to rip you limb from limb."
Gaby squeezed the back of Derek's neck as she rolled her eyes at Peter's words. "I'll be find in a few hours," Derek told him.
"I sincerely hope so, because a few hours is all that you have."
"So you nearly killed Scott?" Cora asked Gaby with a smirk on her face.
The blonde narrowed her eyes "Can you go back to hating me please?"
She laughed "Nope you're stuck with me liking you forever."
"I guess I'll have to live with it," Gaby sighed "Now if you guys will excuse me I'm gonna go take a shower. I'm feeling a little homicidal and need to wash it off me."
Derek shook his head and moved to stand up. "Where are you going?" Cora asked him.
"I need to pull myself together," Derek answered while Gaby steadied him as he stood.
The blonde scoffed "I didn't invite you."
"I don't need an invitation."
Derek began walking and Gaby rolled her eyes and slowly followed Derek up the stairs. The two got into the bathroom and Derek sighed sitting on the edge of the bathtub Gaby could tell the walk exhausted him "You should be resting."
"I know. I can feel it you know," Derek sighed.
Gaby shot him a confused look before moving to take of his shirt "Feel what?"
She pulled him up and went towards the mirror to take her makeup off. Derek stood behind her "Your power."
"It's the full moon Derek, I'm more powerful on the full moon."
"That's not what I'm talking about." His eyes turned into his bright blue beta eyes.
Gaby looked down and sighed, "I don't know why I didn't change." She looked back up and blue eyes met red in the mirror.
"This is a good thing Gab. We still have an Alpha."
"It doesn't feel like a good thing."
"It'll get easier I promise."
Gaby turned around and looked at him "It was easy for you because you knew that I could move up whenever I wanted to. You can't and I don't want…"
"Listen to me," Derek whispered wrapping his arms around her "you are an amazing leader much better than I could ever hope to be. You'll be fine."
"We were supposed to do this together."
"Life doesn't always work out the way we want it to. We know that better than anyone."
"For once I want it to work out for us."
"Eventually it will. Come on, we don't have long until we have company."
Gaby scoffed "Yeah homicidal company."
Gaby stood beside Derek as Lydia and Ethan walked into the loft. The three Hales and their Alpha waited for Ethan to talk. "We know about the lunar eclipse," Ethan started "so don't think Kali's waiting for it to level the playing field. She's coming. My brother's coming with her."
"Good enough for me. Derek?" Peter asked.
"You want me to run?" Derek asked him.
"No. I want you to stay and get slaughtered by an Alpha with a psychotic foot fetish. Of course I want you to run! Sprint, gallop, leap your way the hell out of this town."
"If you wanna fight and die for something, that's fine with me," Cora said "But do it for something meaningful."
"How do you know I'm gonna lose?" Derek asked.
"We don't," Peter answered "But I'll be she has an idea."
Gaby met Lydia's eyes. "I don't know anything," Lydia said.
"But you feel something, don't you?"
"What do you feel?" Derek asked her.
Lydia hesitated and looked back at Gaby. The blonde walked over to her friend. She nodded "It's okay Lyds, just tell us."
The redhead grabbed Gaby's hands "I feel like I'm standing in a graveyard."
Gaby gently rubbed Lydia's arms in an attempt to calm her a bit. "It's your call Gab," Derek said.
"Why is it her call?" Peter asked.
"She's still our Alpha," Cora answered "Her decision's final."
Gaby felt Peter's anger rise and the blonde shot him a look before turning to Derek. She shook her head "I can't risk it." Gaby looked at Cora then back at Derek "You two will get into your car and go as far as you can as fast as you can." She looked at Peter "It's up to you if you want to join them or not. I'm good with either."
"What about you Gaby?"
"I'm staying here. I've brought Kali down once before, I know I can do it again."
"Gab…" Derek started.
Gaby shook her head stopping him "I need you safe."
"And I need you safe."
"Kali's ordered not to kill Gaby," Ethan said "In Deucalion's words she's far too special to be killed."
"How does that make sense to anyone?" Gaby asked "If Derek dies so do I?"
Ethan looked down "He's been looking for ways to break your bond."
"What?"
"And I think he found it. Thanks to Morrell."
Gaby sighed and closed her eyes "I still want you guys to go."
"Gaby," Derek started.
"No I need you out of here." Derek clenched his jaw but nodded and walked upstairs. Gaby followed him and stood in the doorway as he packed a bag. "Please don't be mad at me. I need to stay," she whispered.
"Why?"
The blonde shut the door and helped him with folding his clothes "Scott wants me here."
"You two are going to try and take on Deucalion. It won't work."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence."
Derek stopped folding and looked at her "This is dangerous Gab. Just come with us please."
"I can't." Derek shook his head and continued packing. Gaby moved so she stood in front of him. She looked at him pleadingly "I can't have you mad at me Derek."
He sighed and tucked her blonde hair behind one of her ears. "Promise me something."
"Anything."
"If you feel threatened or in danger, leave…run as fast as you can."
Gaby nodded "Okay." Derek kissed her forehead as she wrapped her arms around him.
Gaby stood between Ethan and Lydia. The alarm blared through the loft and the three watched Kali kick it off the wall. Gaby sighed, "Why would you do that? You know we have to pay to get that fixed right?"
"Where is he?" Kali asked them.
Lydia snapped her fingers, "I think he said he was heading out to do some shopping, run a few errands. The usual werewolf afternoon."
"Who do you think you're talking to?"
"Someone in serious need of a pedicure," Gaby and Lydia answered at the same time.
Gaby smiled and looked at Lydia "I knew it was only a matter of time before our sass synchronized."
Behind Kali Aiden growled as she started to advance towards the three. Kali turned around and looked at him "Oh, really?" She started to circle the younger Alpha "Did someone take their little assignment too seriously?"
Aiden sighed "She's not the problem."
"Maybe the problem is where your loyalties lie."
"Oh god," Lydia whispered "Is this about to get really violent?"
"Probably," Ethan answered.
Before anyone could do anything else a figure dropped through the glass ceiling and dropped between the two groups. Lydia let out a scream and Gaby was quick to pull her out of the way. The blonde looked over as Ethan protected the redhead. Gaby looked back as Jennifer stood up. "So," Jennifer said "who wants to go first?"
As soon as Kali began fighting with Jennifer Gaby ran towards Lydia. They watched as Jennifer threw Kali onto the floor and Aiden stepped up to fight the brunette. Ethan stood up as soon as Aiden was thrown to the floor. The twins began to morph into one, but Jennifer was faster. She grabbed both of their necks and ripped them apart. Lydia stood up pulling the blonde with her, but Gaby held her back from running to the twins. Kali let out another growl and stared at the Darach. "That's right, Kali. Look at me," Jennifer snapped "Look at my face. Do you know what it takes to be able to look like this? To be able to look normal?"
Kali shook her head, "I don't care."
"It takes power. Power like this."
Gaby watched as Jennifer moved her hands and the glass on the floor began to shake and lift off the ground. Lydia began breathing faster and Gaby shut her eyes trying to block the emotions out. She felt Lydia's fear, Kali's anger and sorrow, and she felt Jennifer's pride. It was getting to be too much. "I…" Kali started. The pointed ends of the glass pointed towards the Alpha. "I should've…I SHOULD HAVE RIPPED YOUR HEAD OFF!" Kali yelled right before Jennifer released the glass shards and all of them flew into the Alpha.
Gaby shut her eyes and the smell of blood filled her nose. She opened her eyes as the sound of glass breaking sounded through the room. The blonde watched as Jennifer turned towards the two of them. Gaby moved and stood in front of Lydia. She felt the redhead grab onto her hands as Jennifer moved closer. Gaby caught a glimpse of the twins morphing into one but continued to keep her eyes on the former teacher.
The morphed twins let out a growl drawing Jennifer's attention away from the two girls. They approached the Darach and she quickly dodged them and grabbed their neck from behind. Gaby looked away as a sickening crack sounded through the loft. "What's the line Coach likes to say? The bigger they are…"
"What do you want?" Gaby asked Jennifer as she moved herself and Lydia back.
"I need both of you."
"For what?" Lydia asked her trembling.
"I need Gaby to howl and for you to do what you do best, Lydia. I want you to scream."
"No," Gaby said. Jennifer grabbed the blonde by the throat. "I know why you want this I'm not gonna bring him back." The former teacher glared at the blonde and moved her hand so a piece of glass on the floor flew to her hand. Gaby watched as the teacher moved the shard to her jacket pocket and pull the shard back out. She watched liquid drop from the shard to the floor. The smell of wolfsbane filled her nostrils and Gaby began to cough. "I won't do it," Gaby coughed.
"Fine," Jennifer dropped the blonde. She quickly moved so the shard hit her shoulder rather than her chest.
Against her will Gaby let out a pain filled howl that turned into a whimper as the poison started to move through her system. A few seconds later Lydia let out a scream causing Gaby to flinch from the sound.
A pain shot through Derek's shoulder and the sound of a pain filled howl made him pull the car over. Cora shot him a look "That sounded like Gaby." A scream cut Derek off. "What the hell was that?" Cora asked him.
"Lydia," Derek answered "We have to go back."
"Gaby told us to go and to not come back."
"She just howled, she's in pain, and Lydia screamed…something's wrong and she'll forgive us." Derek turned the car around and sped back towards the loft.
Gaby sat up and moved to pull the glass out of her shoulder but the wolfsbane was working fast. It was becoming harder for her to breathe. She looked over and saw Lydia cowering by a pillar. Gaby crawled over to her friend and sat in front of the redhead. She felt Lydia grab her hand. Gaby looked over as the door flew open. Derek ran towards Gaby and was quick to pull the shard out of her shoulder. He picked her up and started to go upstairs "I wouldn't if I were you," Jennifer spoke as a shard of glass flew in front of his face, "We need to talk before I allow you to heal her."
"I need to do this now or she'll die," Derek growled.
"The longer you're off topic the harder it'll be to heal her. So let's talk."
He looked up at Jennifer "You did this for me?"
"For us. For anyone who's ever been their victim," Jennifer corrected him.
"Then why did you do this to Gaby?"
"She wasn't cooperating and I needed you here. We can stop Deucalion."
"Stop talking to me like a politician. Stop trying to convince me of your cause."
"Fine then I'll convince you of someone else's. Scott. You can save his mother, Stiles' father…your mate's best friend's parents the people who helped raise her."
Gaby started coughing. Derek held her closer "How?"
"I need a Guardian. That's a roll that either be filled by the three parents I was forced to take, or by you."
Gaby grabbed his shirt and shook her head. Derek growled, "I can't help you. I'm not even an Alpha anymore."
"All I need is for you to help me get Deucalion in the right place at the right time."
"You just killed three of 'em on your own. What do you need me for?"
Gaby coughed again and began wheezing. "Soon to be four," Jennifer corrected causing Derek to let out a snarl. "You haven't seen him at his strongest. I have. And if he's got Scott with him, I don't stand a chance. Unless I have you and Gaby."
"Derek don't trust her," Cora snarled "She's killing Gaby by not letting you help her."
"I have the eclipse in my favor," Jennifer stated ignoring Cora "But the moon's only gonna be in the Earth's umbral shadow for fifteen minutes. That's the extent of my window. There's no decision to struggle with. Help me kill him and the others live…including Gabriella."
Derek listened to Gaby's breathing as it became shallow. "You'll let me heal her right now?" he growled out.
"Yes, just help me."
"Fine," he nodded and sprinted up the stairs without a second glance at anyone. Derek set Gaby on the bathroom counter and pulled out a syringe of epinephrine that Deaton gave them. He quickly picked her back up and laid her flat on the floor before injecting it into her thigh. Derek quickly pulled out a lighter and looked at her "This is going to hurt. I'm so sorry."
Gaby let out a scream as Derek started to burn her shoulder. He looked up as a set of hands held the blonde's shoulders down. Derek nodded at his sister and tried to ignore the pain radiating throughout his shoulder. As soon as Gaby calmed down he pulled the lighter away and sat back. Cora gently ran her fingers through Gaby's hair as the blonde started crying. Lydia kneeled beside Cora and rubbed the Alpha's back in a soothing motion. Derek looked at the scene in front of him and wanted nothing more then to go down and rip Jennifer's throat out. He closed his eyes desperately trying to push his anger down. Derek felt a hand grab his. He gently squeezed it and looked back at Gaby. Cora helped the blonde sit up "We'll give you guys some space."
As soon as the door was closed Derek squeezed Gaby's hand and gently kissed it before lightly tugging her closer to him. The blonde moved and sat on his lap. She buried her head in his neck and started crying again "This is all my fault. I'm so sorry."
Derek pushed back a bit and made her look at him "This is not your fault. She did this to you. This is all her fault." Gaby shook her head. "Gaby, stop. I need you to listen to me, we have to help her take Deucalion down in order to save Melissa and the Sheriff."
Gaby nodded "Okay I'll help, but I don't trust her. She's gonna turn on us."
"I know. Let's get you changed so we can go."
As soon as she changed Derek kissed her quickly before walking downstairs with her. "Let's go before I change my mind and try to run you over with a car," Gaby sighed not even looking at the Darach.
