Olivia woke up when she heard a noise coming from the living room. She heard it again and swung her feet out, putting on her slippers. Elliot groaned softly behind her. "What time is it?"
"It's two." Olivia stated standing up.
"Where are you going?" Elliot asked rubbing his eyes.
Olivia pointed towards the living room. "I heard a noise." She covered his mouth when she heard the noise again.
"No." Jamie said from the other room.
"It's Jamie." Olivia breathed before hurrying out to the living room. She turned on the light and saw Jamie twisting in her sleep. She was drenched in sweat and whimpering. "Jamie!" She said hurrying over to her. She sat on the edge of the couch and put a hand on her forehead. "Jamie, baby, wake up."
Jamie's eyes opened and she looked around quickly before tears started rolling down her face. She wrapped her arms around Olivia. "I love you, Mommy."
Olivia cupped the back of Jamie's head. "I love you too, sweetie, but what's wrong?"
Elliot walked out then and his eyes widened. "Liv, Jamie's shoulder is bleeding!" He said hurrying over and sitting behind Jamie.
"What?" Olivia asked before moving Jamie's hair to look at her shoulder. "Oh my God! Jamie, what happened?"
"It hurts." Jamie cried.
"El, she is burning up." Olivia told him feeling her forehead again.
Elliot pointed to her shirt. "Help me take this off. Let's take a look at it." Jamie whined when the fabric moved against her skin. "I'm sorry, sweetie." He put the shirt down and moved her tang top strap aside. "Oh my God! Liv, she has a cut going from her shoulder to halfway down her back. This is infected. It's red and there's more red marks around it."
Olivia's eyes widened as she took a look at the cut. "We need to get her to a hospital." She looked back at Jamie's face and noticed that her eyes were drooping. "We need to go now!"
"How the hell did she get it?" Elliot asked before lifting her up. "Jamie, baby, stay awake, honey. You need to stay awake."
"I don't know. She just said that it hurt." Olivia said before grabbing the car keys. They hurried down to the garage and got into Elliot's car. "I'll call the hospital."
"Hurry!" Elliot said before turning his attention back to Jamie. Her eyes were closed. "No! No! Jamie, you have to stay awake!" He said bringing her into his arms and rubbed her arms.
Jamie moaned. "I'm tired."
Olivia glanced at Jamie through the rear view mirror. "Jamie, stay awake! Please, please, please stay awake."
Olivia ran into the hospital with Elliot carrying Jamie behind her. She slammed against the front desk. "Please help us." She almost sobbed before hurrying over to Elliot and Jamie. "She had a fever, a cut on her back that's infected, and now she won't wake up now matter how hard we try."
Two nurses came over with a doctor. The doctor took out a flashlight and opened Jamie's eyes to look in them. "Let's take her upstairs." He said before they hurried off with Jamie laying on a rolling bed.
Olivia wrapped her arms around Elliot's torso before burying her face in his chest. Elliot wrapped his arms around her tightly and buried his face in her hair. "She'll be okay. She has to be okay."
"El, we couldn't wake her up." Olivia said sobbing this time.
"The doctors will wake her up. She'll be good as new in no time." Elliot breathed tangling his hand in her hair.
"How can you be so sure?" Olivia asked sniffling.
Elliot shook his head. "I'm not. I just know, if I don't think this way, I'll be drowning in a bottle of rum."
Olivia held him tighter. "I'd join you." She felt his lips against her temple and closed her eyes.
Elliot and Olivia were told they could wait in the waiting room on the same floor they were keeping Jamie. It had been two hours since they had heard anything and they were both going crazy. "It was just an infection. Shouldn't we have heard something by now?" Elliot asked, the nerve in his forehead clearly visible.
Olivia shook her head. "I don't know. The only thing keeping me from strangling the doctor is the fact that he's helping Jamie." The doctor walked in then. "It's about time! How is Jamie?" She asked standing up with Elliot behind her.
"Jamie is much better. She is resting now. We ran some tests and I think there's some things we should talk about." The doctor said gesturing to the seats they were just in.
They both sat down and watched as the doctor pulled up a seat. "Now, I recognized your daughter from the news, so I doubt this was any of your doing. The infection was from an untreated cut as you two probably figured out. The cut is about three or four days old. I'd say it was caused by a blunt object. The impact was so hard that it broke the skin. She has a chipped rip and her immune system was weakened from consuming something she was allergic to. She isn't highly allergic to it, but we found that she has so much of it that her immune system was solely protecting itself from it. That's why she was so tired when you brought her in. Is there anything that she had a lot of in the past five to six hours?"
Elliot ran a hand down his face. "She had four glasses of apple juice. Other than that, she had a bowl of soup, but she's had that tons of times before."
"Well, then she's probably allergic to something in the apple juice she is drinking. I don't think it was the actual apple part of the drink, but they put artificial stuff in those drinks that can trigger this kind of reaction. She can still have it, just not as much." The doctor explained.
"Okay, now about the injury and infection?" Olivia asked biting her thumb nail.
The doctor cleared his throat and nodded once. "The rib will heal in time. Just keep her from doing anything physical for the next three weeks. The infection on the other hand was very serious. We have an IV in now so it won't go any further. The infection almost went to her spine, but it'll be fine. We want to keep her here for the morning to keep the antibiotics going through her blood stream. We will send you home with some medication she'll need to take every twelve hours. Depending on when we take out the IV, we will be able to tell you when to start them."
"So, why did the cut start bleeding? She was just sleeping on the couch." Elliot asked.
"Well, I'm going to guess she had a nightmare about whatever happened to her for her to get that cut. Her blood pressure probably skyrocketed enough to where it started to seep from the cut." The doctor guessed. "She will be just fine."
Olivia nodded and sent a prayer up to God even if she didn't believe in him. Elliot put a hand on her back and rubbed soothingly. "Can we go see our daughter?"
The doctor smiled lightly. "Yeah, just don't wake her up. I'll show you to her room." He stood up and walked with them down the hallway and to Jamie's room. There was a single lamp on in the corner by the couch. Jamie was sleeping soundly with an IV in her arm, a band on her wrist, and a clip on her finger to monitor her heartbeat.
"Thanks." Olivia whispered to the doctor before he walked away. She walked over to Jamie, with Elliot, and sat down in the chair next to the bed before taking Jamie's hand into her own.
Elliot smiled down at Jamie and kissed her head. He looked at Olivia and noticed how tired she looked. "I'm going to go get some coffee. You want any?"
Olivia looked up at him before smiling lightly. "Sure, thanks." She looked back at Jamie and moved her hair out of her face.
"The doctor said she was going to be okay, Liv." Elliot repeated for her.
"I know." Olivia nodded.
