Chapter 20
Sabine stood arms folded leaning against the back wall if the cockpit. Zeb stood behind Hera's chair as she piloted the ghost around the Imperial building, admiring the large structure as they flew. Sabine sighed impatiently before pushing of from the wall.
"Hera... do you or Kanan have any idea who that person is?" She asked
Hera shook her head slightly "No... He doesn't seem familiar... and the Inquisitor is the only other lightsaber bearer Kanan has fought in a long time"
"Well... what if it is the Inquisitor?" Zeb asked folding his large Lasot arms
"I don't think so" Hera said as they flew over the two figures again, the purplish glow of the two sabres mixed on the wet ground "Why would the Inquisitor change his style of battle? Two lightsabers... a cloak... nothing we've seen the Inquisitor do before"
"Maybe he just wanted be different? So Kanan wouldn't recognise him?" Sabine suggested
"No... The Inquisitor is taller" Hera explained
"You don't think it would be another Inquisitor?" Zeb asked
Hera looked down at the figure before looking back up at the rain pouring onto the window. She shook her head gently before sighing
"I don't know..."
Sabine looked at her be then back down at Kanan before the ship flew over them, once again circling the building. Hera piloted the ship carefully as Zeb, Sabine and Chopper waited close to her for Kanan to give the go ahead. Sabine looked down at the building and saw as a small cannon aimed in the ships direction. She quickly opened her mouth to say something but the cannon shot, and caused the ship to judder, almost knocking Sabine and Zeb over.
"Looks like they've figured out we're here" Hera said irritated as she began to press a few buttons on the dashboard
Sabine watched as they continued to be fired at before turning and quickly heading toward the ladder leading to the gun turret
"Sabine don't!" Hera said, almost shouting as she turned her head
"What? Shouldn't be firing back?" Sabine asked her hands on either side of the top of the ladder
"No..." Hera said as she turned back to the wet window "If we fire back, there's a risk we could shoot something important, and I don't want an explosion... Ezra is still inside remember"
Zeb and Sabine looked at each other before the madaloriane pushed herself of from the railing
"So what now?" Zeb asked as a cannon shot the side of the ghost
Hera said nothing as she looked through the window, continually being blocked by the amount of rain sliding down the glass; she shook her head before cannon fire hit the back of the ghost
"...The Shields are lasting, but they won't hold long if this carries on"
She looked around before looking up at the clouds above her. She thought for a minute before pulling hard on the controls, pulling the ship upward. The ghost quickly flew above the stormy clouds and away from the sight of fire. She and the others let out a small sigh in relief before Hera leant back against the seat
"Didn't Kanan tell us to circle the building?" Zeb asked folding his large arms again
"Yes... but doing that will only get us shot. And I can't get around that with all that rain" Hera said gesturing the clouds below her
"All we can do is leave and wait for Kanan to tell us it's safe..."
"What if he needs our help?" Sabine asked sitting in the co-pilot seat
"I've seen Kanan fight against..." Hera began. She shifted her head slightly and saw the other two staring at her "Well... tougher foes"
Sabine raised a brow slightly before sighing and falling back onto the large chair. She was going to argue, but she could tell Hera wasn't in any mood. She had Ezra and now Kanan in danger. She looked out at the clouds below them and sighed to herself.
Kanan and Ezra pushed hard on their lightsabers, throwing either of them backward, skidding to a stop. Kanan looked up and glared at the mysterious person
"Who are you?" He asked through the slight panting
Ezra wasn't interested in talking, he ran toward the Jedi again with both lightsabers behind him as he ran, as he reached him, he swung both but was quickly blocked by the bright blue blade. Kanan pushed back on both lightsabers, but Ezra pushed harder. The strength the Inquisitor was able to bring out became stronger as the teen fought. He pushed hard back onto the Jedi and within moments, Kanan slowly began to move backwards. His feet kept still tightly in place as they were pushed. Kanan gritted his teeth as he continued to push back on the figures sabres as they grew closer to his body and neck. He closed his eyes, holding them together tightly as he pushed using the force, throwing back the figure a little way backwards. Ezra skidded to a stop before turning around to the Jedi, he master was right that he was strong in both the force and battle. He glared at the him before seeing a variety of large rocks behind him. He grinned, now was the time to put his masters training to work. He looked back down at the Jedi, and waited for him to again charge at the teen, holding his lightsaber in hand. Just as Kanan almost reached him, he jumped high over him landing on a pointed rock. He withdrew the duel blades almost surrounding him in the pitch darkness. He watched the Jedi as he turned and looked in the direction the figure jumped to, but with the dark and rain mixed, it was almost impossible to see. Growing impatient Kanan breathed in and focused to where his foe was. Only a few seconds past before he slammed open his eyes and jumped for the rock the blue blade in hand. He landed, but with no one else around him. He shifted around looking for the hooded figure, but had no luck. He raised a brow as he continued to search, until he was forced backwards back onto the training area he and Ezra fought before. He landed on his back dropping his lightsaber, letting it role slightly away from him. He quickly sat up squinting as he put his hand on his side where he hit the ground; he pushed himself up and looked at the rocks as if waiting for the figure to emerge from the darkness. But as he waited his Jedi instincts quickly picked up something from behind him. Kanan swiftly and immediately turned as a crimson red lightsaber aimed for his chest passed him. He turned around before grabbing his own arm; the sabre had missed its target, instead hitting his un-armed arm burning slightly into the skin cutting through the green long shirt. He squinted painfully before reaching for his lightsaber, it flew into his hand and he ignited it, still shielding his arm. He took a short breath before moving his hand away, and joining it with holding his lightsaber, he glared angrily at the figure who had moved further away once he attempted to strike at the Jedi. He had ignited both lightsabers once again, shining behind him in the pouring rain.
"Gotta say... I'm impressed" Kanan said with a small grin
"Looks as though the empires finally got people worthy of a good fight"
Ezra stood straight but still with the sabres in hand glaring at the Jedi from under the hood watching as the Jedi withdrew his lightsaber as rolled it between his gloved hands continuing to smile. He looked down at it before looking back to Ezra
"Now, I'll ask again..." He began
Kanan quickly lifted a hand and threw back the figure hard against the wall causing him to drop both lightsabers as he was forced backwards, he groaned in pain as Kanan moved toward him still with his hand held up
"Where. Is the kid?"
His voice changed to worry, covered with the amount of anger the Jedi felt, the pressure he held onto Ezra grew stronger as he walked toward the teen. He reached the twin lightsabers and kicked them gently before looking down, then looked back at Ezra. The teen remained quiet, he honestly didn't know Kanan was talking about, but still refused to say anything anyway. He watched as Kanan shock his head before attaching his lightsaber onto his belt.
"I don't have time for this..."
He held up his other hand and began to tighten the grip around the teen's neck. Ezra now began to struggle slightly. His master had already punished him by doing this already, and he couldn't take it happening to him again. He opened his eyes and eyed the two lightsabers by the Jedi, but he still couldn't move his hands or arms, there was no chance he could get them. Closing his eyes painfully again, the grip became tighter. Then un-intently he called out name without even realizing
"KANAN!" His voice was filled with desperation for his 'master' to stop hurting him.
The Jedi's eyes widened instantly dropping both hands letting Ezra drop to his knees, taking deep breaths. Kanan confusingly steps backwards. He recognised the voice, but it couldn't... As he moved backwards his foot hits something metal. He looked down and saw the lightsaber blaster that belonged to his padawan. Still slightly shocked, he bent down and picked up the lightsaber, he stared before looking back at the figure. Kanan looked harder before the person moves there head toward him, the hood had slipped backwards as they fell. The rain poured onto Ezra face as it showed through the dark hood. Kanan stepped backward, seeing that the person he fought was his padawan.
"Ezra..." He mumbled nervously as he held onto the lightsaber
Ezra glared at him with his bright yellow eyes before raising a brow slightly. Why had he called out that name, he didn't recognise it. But the Jedi did as it was obviously 'his' name, but why would that cause him to stop trying to fighting him? His master had told him Jedi do not back down, so why had he stopped so quickly? He continued to stare at the Jedi from his knees who continued to look at the blaster lightsaber, why was it he looked so... sad all of a sudden. As he stared, it was like he began to feel this strange connection with the Jedi. Kanan didn't speak; he just stared at the lightsaber before running his hand along it. It almost broke him seeing his padawan the way he was. It scared him even more that he could have hurt... or possibly even killed him without knowing. He turned back toward Ezra and watched as the teen quickly turned away as if pretending not to have been staring at him. He was about to ask him a question when he felt something big from behind him. He turned and looked up at the clouds, and saw as an Imperial Star Destroyer slowly began to make its way down; Ezra followed his movement and looked up at the ship. Kanan quickly turned to Ezra and looked at him through his narrowed eyes, desperate he tries to talk to him
"Ezra... whatever the Inquisitor did... you know that's not you"
"You're stronger than that Ezra... stronger than him. Remember who you are"
Though Ezra could hear the desperation in the Jedi's voice, he said nothing. He glared once again at the Jedi and stands. He quickly held out both hands and pulled the lightsabers toward him, igniting the crimson blades. Kanan turned his head from the sky and faced Ezra once again
"I'm not going to fight you Ezra..."
"I'm not going to hurt you again" he said as he cocked his head slightly.
Ezra stopped frowning but kept staring at the Jedi. Why was it he seemed so sincere, why wasn't he willing to attack? Ezra didn't understand, his master said the Jedi would fight him until either of them... died. But he wasn't. The teen looked up at the star destroyer as it grew closer joined by Kanan. He looked down at his Padawans lightsaber before back up to Ezra
"I'm sorry kid"
With that, he jumped over a large crack separating the building from the rest of the planet, Ezra ran to the edge withdrawing his lightsabers as he ran. He watched as Kanan ran through the rain, and into the darkness. He stared curiously before looking down to the sabres
"Kid..." He mumbled, as if this meant something to him
He turned away from the cliff side and looked up at the star destroyer as it slowly flew over the building. Tie fighters soon began to fly out from underneath, heading in all directions. Ezra looked at the building and quickly ran for it, pulling his hood back over his head completely.
Kanan ran through the harsh rain and foggy landscapes as he pulled out his com. He held Ezra's lightsaber in his hand as he ran
"This is Spectre 1... Spectre 2, I'm gonna need a lift"
Hera sat up from her chair surprised to hear Kanan followed by Sabine and Zeb.
"Kanan? What happened? Have you got Ezra?"
"No. Not exactly" Kanan said as he slowed down and began to walk through the rain, being far enough away from the building
"What? What about the plan? Aren't we going to try and find him?" Sabine asked raising a brow
"Plans change Sabine" The Jedi said slightly out of breath
"...Kanan where are you?" Hera asked as she heard the rain and the slightly panting from her fellow crew member
"North of the imperial building" Kanan explained
"What? Why are you there?" Zeb asked standing from his chair and leaning on Hera's
"It doesn't matter why I'm here" Kanan said
"What about Ezra? Is he not still inside?" Hera asked curiously
It went silent; Kanan stopped and looked straight as he held the com. He couldn't tell them what he saw, so he kept it to himself
"Kanan?" Hera asked as the Jedi still did not reply
"Look, just head to my location. I'll tell you everything once I'm aboard" Kanan lied as he slowly began to walk again
Hera sighed irritated before she pulled on the ships controls and headed back for the building she circled not long before
"Wait, we're actually going through with this? Hera. Ezra's still inside and we can't just leave him" Sabine said looking at the Twil-ek
"I'm aware of that" Hera said turning to Sabine
"But if Kanan had a good reason to leave, then we need to trust him"
Hera flew through the clouds and saw the star destroyer hovering over the building, she almost immediately pulled the ghost to fly away surprised to see the ship there. She quickly turned the ship and headed north carefully managing to keep the ghost out of sight of the large ship
"A little heads up on the imperial ship would have been nice dear" Hera said into the com
Kanan smirked a little before shrugging
"Not my fault you left"
"We were being shot at love... Seems as though you're plans aren't going so well today are they?" Hera asked as she piloting the ship north
Kanan shock his head with a small laugh before he began to sense the ghost coming toward him, he looked up at the grey cloudy sky and waited for the lights from the ship to appear. And it didn't take long; the large ship came through the rainy sky and carefully lowered close to Kanan. The ramp opened and Sabine stood holding onto the side waiting for Kanan to board. The Jedi attached his com onto his belt before leaping into the entrance of the ship. Sabine stood back and closed the ramp as Kanan shook the rain from his shirt; he then sighed and leant back onto the side of the ship. Sabine waited for the ramp to close then folded her arms staring at the Jedi
"Before you ask Sabine. I left for good reason" Kanan said continuing to face away from her
"Care to explain that reason?" The mandaloriane asked
Kanan stood silently before he felt as the ship slowed then watched as Hera and Zeb made their way down the ladder
"You're soaked" Hera said looking at Kanan a little surprised
"It's a wet planet" Kanan said shrugging
Hera walked toward him before seeing the red stain coming from his shirt sleeve he tried to hide; she grabbed it and pulled it toward her
"Kanan! What did..." She began
"It's fine, it's just a graze" Kanan said attempting to pull his hand away from the Twil-ek
Hera rolled her eyes as she pulled up the sleeve of Kanan's shirt so she could look at it better
"See. A graze" Kanan said looking down at it, showing no sign of pain as Hera ran her hands along the wound
"It still needs to be cleaned" The Twil-ek said looking up at Kanan's face
"And I'll clean it" Kanan said once again trying to get his arm away
"No. I'll clean it, last time you tried to clean a wound it just got worse" Hera said rolling her eyes
Kanan was about to talk back when Sabine saw the Lightsaber Kanan was holding behind his back. She quickly reached for it and pulled it away catching the attention of the Jedi
"Ezra's lightsaber?" She asked
"Where'd you find this?"
"Did that person you were fighting have it?"
Kanan was silent for a second before sighing
"No... I found it not long before I contacted you"
Sabine stared at it before raising a brow and looked at Kanan once again
"What happened to who you were fighting?"
Kanan hesitated, but saw as everyone stared at him, waiting for him to answer.
"I handled it..."
Everyone stared, But Hera didn't believe him. She knew he was lying but before she could even try to confront him the sound of tie fighters slowly began to be heard
"We better start moving" Kanan said as he sighed
"Right..." Hera agreed
Everyone walked to ladder except from Kanan who had taken back the lightsaber from Sabine. Hera walked to the ladder and put her hand on the bottom. She briefly turned over her shoulder and looked at Kanan who was looking down at his Padawans lightsaber, still leaning against the wall. She choose not to say anything as she climbed the ladder and joined the others in the cockpit.
