Chapter 21
Sophie's POV
I sit there a little stunned. Well this isn't how I saw the evening going, I think to myself. I look from the key to Spencer and realise he's still waiting for an answer.
"Okay" is all I can manage to get out. I watch as Spencer lets out the breath he'd been holding.
"I was a little worried then" He chuckles. I piled a few spoonful's of food into my mouth giving me some time to think about everything. I was happy, really happy actually with how things were right now, did we really need to complicate things by moving in together? I guess we pretty much lived together now didn't we? This was all a little too much after the day I'd had.
"If you think it's a little fast you can say" Spencer says watching me. Damn profilers.
"No it's fine …" I pause and actually connect my brain to the conversation. "Sorry … I should be more excited … just had a really weird day … I'm happy though really happy" I smile.
"We can go and have a look if you want?" He asks. I nod my head. "We'll go after dinner then" he smiles.
I sit in the car as Spencer drives, he fills the silence with ideal chit chat about the area as I stare out the window at the passing streets. I couldn't shake the conversation I'd had with Nick, what was up with him, I wondered more and more.
"Sophie" at the sound of my name I'm knocked from my thoughts.
"Hmm"
"Your phones ringing" Spencer says looking a little concerned. I fish the cell from my pocket and check the caller id.
"Hey Amy … what's up?" I answer.
"Where are you?" Is all she asks.
"Near Spencer's apartment why?" I was feeling uneasy, my gut was screaming something was wrong. I could see Spencer watching me from the corner of his eye picking up on my tense body language.
"You need to meet me at Nick's apartment … now" Amy states urgency thick in her voice. I pull the phone from my ear and give Spencer directions to where we now needed to go.
"What's happened?" I ask returning to the call. I can hear commotion in the background the type you'd hear at a crime scene.
"I'll explain when you're here" and with that she ends of call and I'm left wondering what the hell is going on.
We pull up outside Nick's place 10 minutes later. I was still dressed in trousers and blouse, id, badge and gun still at my side. The officers in charge of crowd control waved me through quickly. My heart was in my throat, this wasn't good. Police tape cornered off the house, there was crime scene techs and flashing lights everywhere I looked.
My focus narrowed as I made my way into the house. He'll be okay, was all I could repeat to myself.
As I entered my living room I found who I'd been looking for.
"Amy" I shouted over the other voices.
"Sophie … I wanted to tell you on the phone" she was talking fast trying to explain and when I saw who was behind her I understood why.
"Agent Herring was ordered not to tell you anything" Keen stated, Amy looked to the floor not wanting to meet my gaze.
"What's going on … Where's Nick?" I asked but I couldn't decide if I really wanted to know. Before Keen had a chance to answer, I heard shouts from the front porch.
"Hey let them through" I ordered hearing Tony's booming voice arguing with the officers.
Tony and Conor joined me and I turned back to Keen still waiting for my answer.
"I can't explain everything here … I have a meeting I need to keep but then I will be able to answer all your questions … I'll see you all at the officer at 6am" and with that Keen left. I was seriously losing my patience.
"Tell me everything you know" I ordered Amy who was still looking rather sheepish.
"I don't know much" she started. "I came by to see Nick … he seemed really skittish after talking to you, left just after five which is weird for him … I wanted to make sure he was okay so I dropped by … I found the place like this" she gestured to the chaos that surrounded us. Broken furniture and glass littered the carpet, there was spatters of blood on the walls not enough to be serious but there had obviously been a struggle.
"Why didn't you call me … why did you call Keen?" I asked trying to keep calm, the last thing the team or Spencer needed to see was me fall apart.
"I didn't call him" she paused and looked around moving in closer. "He was already here … inside … when I came in … he was with a few other agents, he told me to call the police and crime techs and then call you and the rest of the team" She finished and all I could do was rub my hand over my face.
"What had Nick gotten himself into" I half whispered to myself. My training and leadership started to kick in.
"Right we work this like any other case … I need you guys to search the house try and figure out what happened here … has anyone called Scott?" I waited for everyone to shake their heads. "I'll call Scott, get him to meet us at the office for six … our main priority is finding Nick" I watched as everyone dispersed and turned to Spencer who had stood quietly by my side the whole time.
"I'm sorry" is all I could really say. He shook his head.
"Don't be, this is important … do you need me to stay?" he asked.
I sighed "No … I'll call and let you know what's happening" I said. Spencer lent in and kissed my cheek.
"You know where I am if you need to talk … I love you" and with that I watched him walk out the door and to the car.
