Chapter 21

Spencer and Helen (because Helen it was) were finally forced to break their gaze and get up phone Diana's phone began to ring shrilly. As it blasted Maroon 5's It Was Always You, Diana gave a sheepish smile at all the people who had turned around to look at the source of the high volume and picked it up, "Hello?"

"Sis, where the hell have you been?" came a most irritated answer.

Diana gestured to Jennifer and Giselle to go and find a table while she moved out of the restaurant to hear what her sister had to say.

"Viola?" Diana asked happily.

"Duh," Viola replied. "Have you forgotten about your family?"

Diana began, "N-"

"Uh uh, let me finish," Viola said. "We have been waiting for you to call and Mom and Dad have been trying to get hold of you ever since you've gone to Brazil. Why do you even have a phone if you never charge it?"

"I charged it today," Diana defended herself, "and before that I couldn't find my phone."

A string of highly colourful words came through the phone making Diana shake her head in pity at her sister's vocabulary.

Diana brought her to a stop, "Are you all fine?"

"Yes!" shouted Viola. "Except for the fact that our parents and all your friends have been driving me crazy, asking me to get hold of you when I can't."

"Sorry," Diana said. "You know how I am with phones. We just don't get along. Anyway anything important?"

"Yeah," Viola replied. "Mariam called ten minutes ago to say that she's pregnant."

"What!?" Diana screeched in delight. "No way! And you tell that now?"

Viola hmm-ed.

"Oh my God," Diana said, smiling from ear to ear. "I am so happy. I'm going to call her now, okay? Bye! I love ya."

"Whatever," Viola replied.

Diana smiled at her sister's attitude. Viola Greene, nineteen years old and currently in College, was Diana's younger sister. Both of them had dark brown and green eyes but that's where the similarities ended. They were polar opposites but had over the years become really close even though anybody who saw them would never believe it.

Diana dialled Mariam's number.

Mariam had been sitting beside the phone talking with different friends and relatives in turns. Max was sitting beside her on the sofa pestering her to let go of the phone.

Max had never imagined the kind of happiness he felt right. To think that he was going to be a father was the best feeling in the world. All he wanted to hug and kiss Mariam right now and Mariam's long talks with everybody in the world were not amusing him at all. When Mariam finally said bye to Hilary, Max heaved a sigh of relief, "Finally!"

He leaned towards Mariam and smiled, "I thought you'd never stop talking."

"You did?" Mariam smiled back.

Max nodded and brought his lips closer to Mariam's when the phone rang. Mariam gave him an apologetic peck and picked up the phone, "Hi Diana! You heard the news?"

Max groaned loudly.

"Yeah I heard," Diana's happy voice came through. "Congratulations! I'm so happy but wait, what's that horrible noise?"

Mariam looked at Max who was groaning loudly and shook her head, smiling, "Its Max. He-er-fell down and hurt his knee."

They talked for some time while Max drew circles on Mariam's arm trying his best to distract her. Then he started tickling her.

"-yeah, it's the third month…hahahahahah…stop it! Hahahaha…ow…stop!" Mariam tried to push away Max.

Diana wondered what was going on in Mariam's house. "Are you okay?"

Max put his mouth to Mariam's phone and said laughingly, "Hello, Diana? Yeah, it's me, Max. Get off the phone and let me kiss Mariam. Bye!"

Diana couldn't help laughing aloud at Max's goodbye. Well, she'd better go and tell the rest of them about the news. She wondered if Max had called Kai.

When she pushed open the glass door of the restaurant, she gasped. Giselle was holding Ian's collar roughly and, as Diana watched, Giselle slapped Ian across his face.
