Marcus woke up to Chase shaking him. "Marcus what happened?" he asked a little panicked.
"The robot exploded" he said groggily. You survived and I took us to safety. Now I'm tired." Marcus mumbled.
"No one's hurt. How did we survive a explosion without any scratches?" Bree asked. Marcus shot to his feet, almost collapsing. He grabbed onto Chase and waited till the dizziness passed.
"Another android" He gasped. "I couldn't get to you. I thought you were dead but when I got there, there was an android holding a forcefield."
"Another android" Bree asked confused. "But I thought you were the only one." Marcus nodded.
"I have no idea who made it. Only Mr. Davenport of dad... I mean Douglas could make an android with a forcefield like that. It's just like mine and Chase's." It was then that he noticed the stars. "It's night and we haven't moved" He shouted at them. Did you see the trail I left? We need to move now." Marcus released Chase but immediately fell to his knees.
"No you're in no condition to move" Chase said getting on his knees next to Marcus.
"No" Marcus groaned. Don't you understand? Someone sent that thing after us and we barely survived. Now we left an obvious trail for them to follow. Who knows what they could send next? And that time we might not live." Bree and Adam shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot.
"Marcus your health" Chase tried to say.
"Chase he's right" Adam piped up. "We need to go."
"I'm sorry but I agree" Bree added.
"Chase I know you care about me and my wellbeing but to think of all of our safety first." Marcus said calmly, placing his hand on the other boy's cheek. Reluctantly Chase nodded, not forgetting to glare at his siblings.
"That way's north" Chase pointed. "We're still pretty far from the border but we can find a train or another car in the next town. Adam you have to carry Marcus" Chase said, glaring at the boy.
"Fine but we need to go now" Marcus growled. It took them five minutes to start off to the next town.
"Marcus you said you were safe from the blast" Chase commented, a confused look on his face. "So how did you get this bad? You didn't run far enough to exhaust you to this extent." Marcus's cheeks turned red.
"I had to use my strength and speed at once." He whispered trying to hide the emotions flowing through him, guilt that he almost killed himself but proud that he could do something of that magnitude. Everyone stopped dead in their tracks.
"That's impossible" Chase gasped.
"No it just took a lot out of me. I wouldn't recommend it" he chuckled. "Now let's get going, we're barley a mile from where I dropped you. They walked in an awkward silence the rest of the night. The sun was just breaking the horizon when a town's light shone in the distance.
"Let's get some food and find somewhere for Marcus to lie down" Chase said.
Back at home Davenport was screaming into the phone. It was like his brother had disappeared. There was no security footage or sign of broke entry. The guards didn't even see him. Slamming down the phone he called to Leo.
"What do you need" Leo asked. He had to play this helpful son role. Ever since Donald had escaped Mr. Davenport was at the edge of his rope. He had Leo running around doing everything from dishes to putting together a lazar array system. Even Edie was behaving. There had been no word from the others since the first time they contacted Edie and it was driving him crazy.
"Leo go upstairs and grab me my toolbox. It's next to the TV." Leo nodded and rushed to the elevator. He walked to the TV. His mother had left the news on again. It was like she thought she'd find the others on some news report. He glanced up at the screen.
"Mr. Davenport" he screamed. The man arrived in the room looking angry.
"What" he growled. Leo pointed at the screen. A picture of a giant robot was on the screen. Leo turned up the volume.
"Earlier today there was mass panic on interstate 57 in Idaho just off a small city called Glenwood. There has been only a few photos but countless eye witness reports. They claim the monster fell out of the sky and landed right on the road. It then proceeded to smash its way up the road. There were countless crashes blocking any escape by vehicle. Almost everyone had been trapped in their car or barley made it out. The shocking thing was they say they were saved by four teenagers with superpowers. A young man freed the victims from their cars with super strength. They reported two other men and a woman all younger than 18 fighting off the robot. We spoke to the last two to escape." The screen switched to an interview with a man and woman outside in a small town.
"It was horrible" the woman said. "We didn't know what happened. One moment we were fine and the next the world closed in around us." She began to cry. The man held her and started talking.
"We heard screaming outside and loud bangs. There were guns firing too. It felt like hours until I herd the metal around us pulling apart."
"He was just a boy" the woman gasped. "He was so young, no older then my own son who is now in the hospital" she began to cry again.
"How is the boy" The reporter asked.
"The doctors say he's lucky" the dad said. He only has a broken arm and leg but they say if he was in the car any longer they wouldn't have been able to save the leg. It would have to be amputated." The women sniffled into her husband's coat.
"What did you see after this boy freed you?" the reporter asked.
"There was this giant robot. It terrified me" The man said. "I'll admit I was frozen for a few seconds until the boy told us to run. But what shocked me the most was the other kids. There was this boy with a forcefield or something deflecting all the bullets shooting out of the monster, and a girl ripping of the guns and some big guy throwing cars at it. Whole cars! Not just a door or something but an entire car. That was all we saw because I grabbed my son and wife and ran." The screen flipped back to the news lady.
"There you have it focus. I wouldn't believe it myself if we didn't see the damage." In the corner it showed a video of the damage seen from a helicopter. "We don't know where those kids are but if they're watching this I want them to know they're heroes. Now let's go to Todd with the weather." Davenport flipped through three more news channels until they were talking about it again.
A child was sitting outside a building talking to the reporter, in the middle of a conversation. "I shook them but they wouldn't wake up. There was so much blood." His voice was emotionless. "I was crying so much but then this boy comes with glowing green eyes. He picked me up and handed me to a man and told him to run. That was all." They switched to another eye witness. "We would be dead if it weren't for them. Thank you so much." "Saved us" Another man yelled stomping up to the camera. What do you think happened, a giant robot attacks us and there just happens to be superhero kids. No it was after them. They didn't save us. They condemned us. No mater how many people they 'saved' every person who died did because of them." Leo switched the TV off.
"We have to get them away from that boy" Davenport spat. "At least now I know where they are." Leo tried to talk but was pushed out of the way. The two walked down to the lab. "If he wants to use robots then I will too. Douglas won't know what hit him." The man began to hit his fingers down on the keyboard growling.
"Mr. Davenport what are you doing?" Leo asked, worried.
"I'm getting my kids back. Now leave. You're getting in my way." Leo gaped at his stepfather.
"They'll never come willingly" he spat back at the man. "You can try all you want but there a four of them and one of you. They took down a giant robot. Do you really think they'll be trapped by anything you throw at them?" Leo turned and marched away. Davenport toped his typing momentarily. There was a flash of emotion, only for a second, no one would have known but him.
"I'm saving my kids" he said again, feeling he was trying to convince himself not Leo."
