Day 21
"Ted just called, they just got the car and are going to be here in ten." Barney hollered through the apartment.
"Okay, I am almost ready." Robin replied.
Barney grinned, and checked his reflection in the mirror, he was wearing dress pants, and a shirt, sleeves rolled up.
"What do you think?" Robin asked as she entered his bedroom.
Seeing her in such a good mood made him grin, "you look great."
"You do too, by the way." She replied.
"I can't wait to see what you are going to pick out for me."
"It's going to be something casual, that's for sure." She teased him.
…
The ride out to Woodbury Commons was fun, Marshall play Stitchdog pretty much by himself, while Lily, Robin and Barney were sitting in the back, chatting about the stores they were going to go to, and the things they needed.
"So Robin," Ted suddenly interrupted their chatter.
"Yeah?"
"Some more bills came the other day, remind me to give them to you."
"You know if you need money, we can figure something out." Lily suggested.
Barney looked out the window, this wasn't very subtle, but he had expected them to bring the issue back up.
"Thanks, but that won't be necessary." Robin replied while lacing her fingers with Barneys.
"You shouldn't use all your savings," Marshall advised her.
"What savings?" Robin joked, and added, "no seriously, Barney is going to pay for some of the stuff."
Their eyes met, and Barney smiled at her, "just till she gets back on her feet."
"Really? That's really nice of you." Lily noted.
"We can cover some of the expenses too," Ted offered.
"I think we got it, right Robin?" Barney asked.
She nodded, "yep."
…
Barney stayed with Robin, and Lily, which meant that he constantly found himself waiting in front of dressing rooms.
"I will get another size in the jeans, can you watch my stuff?" Robin asked as she walked out of the cabin on socks.
Barney nodded.
"She's really enjoying herself." Lily said as she sat down next to him.
Barney nodded, "she is."
"It's really nice of you to take some of the financial pressure of her."
"It's not a big deal, I mean I got the money." He shrugged.
"Still, she'd not be trying on clothes if you hadn't convinced her to let you pay for some of it. How did you do that by the way?"
"Please."
Both of them grinned.
"Can you do me a favor?" Barney asked.
"Sure, anything."
"Can you hang out with Robin tomorrow morning? Take her out for coffee or something? I don't want her to be in the apartment by herself."
"What do you mean, she's alone all the time."
"Yeah that's going to change." Barney muttered.
"How?" Lily asked.
"I am going to take some time off of work to spend more time with her…" Barney noticed her grin, and quickly added, "it's not what you are thinking."
"Okay, then why do you want to spend more time with her Barney?" She asked.
He didn't want to get into it too much, "what I was saying is that I need to buy her present tomorrow morning, and go into the office to talk to my boss."
"What are you getting her?" Lily asked.
"You'll see. Heads up though; it's the best gift ever!"
"Jewelry?" Lily guessed.
Barney just rolled his eyes at her, "no – much better. She'll love it."
"Well, I can't wait to see what you came up with. We are still doing the movie night tomorrow night, right?"
Barney nodded, "yes, I was thinking six?"
"Sounds good."
…
Robin picked out a jeans, and a plain V-neck t-shirt for him to wear.
"Can we at least get a vest or something with it?" Barney complained as he starred at himself through the mirror.
"I like it. What do you think Lily?" Robin asked.
"It suits you."
"Suits suit me." Barney corrected her.
"I think you look hot."
Both Barney, and Lily looked at Robin in surprise, had she really just said that?
"What? He does, it shows off your biceps."
"I know what you are doing, you are trying to make me wear this outfit more often so you can make fun of me." Barney countered.
"I am not, I really do like it." Robin replied.
"Fine, let's just buy it, and go. Marshall and Ted are waiting for us." Lily interrupted them.
…
Both Marshall, and Ted pulled out their phones to take pictures of Barney as soon as they arrived.
"Boy Robin really made out suit down, huh?" Marshall asked.
"You look like some regular guy." Ted commented.
"Don't listen to them, you look great." Robin interjected, and linked her arm with Barney's.
Barney just shot Ted a grin, he might be suited down, but he was okay with it as long as Robin thought he'd still looked better than Ted.
…
"Lily is going to come over in the morning." Robin told him as he came out of the bathroom.
"Oh yeah?" He asked.
"She wants to get a coffee, or something, but I am hoping that she'd be okay with staying here." Robin shrugged.
"Well, I will be home with your gift around noon." He said as he climbed in the bed with her.
"You don't have to come home early, I will be okay, I promise." She reassured him.
"I know, but I can't wait for you to see what I am getting you, it's going to be legen- wait until tomorrow – dary."
She snuggled up to him, "you really don't need to get me anything Barney."
"I know, but I want to, besides, you are going to love this. I promise."
"Great, now I really want to know what you are getting me." Robin grinned.
"Well, you should be excited." He teased her.
"Stop that."
He laughed, "it'll blow your mind."
She gently hit his chest, and he caught her hand, "hey, stop that. You don't hit the person who is getting you the best birthday present of your life."
"Are you sure it's that great? Cause while I appreciate a fine suit, or cigar, I wouldn't say that either of those things are going to make my top ten birthday gifts list."
"Oh this will, I promise."
"I really can't wait to see it." She grinned.
"I will hurry home." He replied, gently kissing her temple.
"Good night Barney."
"Night Scherbatsky."
