New 2015 Summary: What if you woke up to a role so completely unfitting and with a future already made? With a contrasting mindset, knowledge in a convoluted mess and ambitions steered a different direction, this only completed the odd assembly that was the new Haruno Sakura. Welcome to her life. OC Self Insert.

Previous Summary: What if you open your eyes and find yourself in the Naruto world? What would happen with a Sakura with a different mindset and knowledge of the future? Stay and read. :)

Authors note: Basically, things happened, and I'm going to explain the reasons for the delay at the end. I appreciate the patience though! You're all wonderful!

And so, chapter 21 is finally up. That means that every other chapter has been under the microscope and a lot of content has been added. You don't need to go back and read the whole thing though. Plot-wise this story hasn't changed, and that's all that really matters. Sakura's childhood has been fleshed out though. Like, extremely why-is-this-chapter-more-than-twice-the-length-now fleshed out. For the curious but lazy, I recommend at least reading the first three chapters since they're the most changed. The rest basically stays the same. And don't worry, I will tell you if you really need to know something for future chapters.

You can just continue reading this long awaited chapter. Go on, I won't stop you. Enjoy!

Chapter 21

Her backseat jolted uncomfortably and she glanced back, frowning. She could hear voices shouting. A man, yelling. Two other men pushing him out of the door. Something the man said must have scared them, because they began rushing about, shouting in frightened voices to evacuate.

She stood up reluctantly. What was going on?

Then the images flashed by, impressions and sounds mashed together in one jumbled mess.

"–on't know! We must – NO!"

"Stay calm everybody, there's no need to worry. We have the situation under cont–"

The tangy taste of blood erupted in her mouth. The deafeningly loud and grinding noise echoed inside her head. Constricting fingers dug into her arm, cutting off the blood flow to her hand. The maniacal laughter abruptly stopped by a screech that shook the floor, and the world began to spin.

Glass erupted all around them, an impact, pain shooting though her body and, and –

I awoke with a gasp, chest heaving and sweat on my brow.

The breeze playfully picked up my hair and waved it about while the sun peeked through the clouds. The balmy heat that had come to be expected this time of year was nowhere to be found, and all in all, it was a very calm day in Konohagakure.

Letting my feet lead the way, I kept half my attention on the familiar bright chakra of my teammates. We were quite a distance from each other. Naruto was in the derelict part of Konoha to the south while Sasuke lived by the western part in his Uchiha Compound. I was currently in the east, and I wondered absently if it was worth tracking them down today. It was our cool-down day, so we were free to do whatever now. We were scheduled to meet again tomorrow, so it wasn't like I would never meet them. Ino was technically closer, so I could just...

No. I mentally shook my head.

I had to do this. I couldn't go running back to my safe childhood friend whenever I encountered something new and scary. I said it yesterday already, and now was the time for me to hold my words. Ignorance was not an option. Not anymore.

I was going to have to sit down and have a proper conversation with my teammates. They deserved that much at least. Honesty would be the key word.

So with determination and reluctance, I continued doggedly forward. I almost forgot to veer around a civilian more than once, being too used to Wave where practically everyone knew who I was. It was quite a contrast to Konoha where I might get a grateful nod once a blue moon when they saw the headband peeking out from my hair. They were simply too used to Shinobi over here. And in any case, if my eyes weren't fooling me, some recognized me as Naruto's teammate and gladly 'happened' to bump into me.

I sighed.

I was avoiding the real issue, even in my head.

It was the business of, well, everything that needed to be said out loud between us three. We were too used to secrecy, really. Add that with the Zabuza incident and blatantly lying to everyone with our mission report, I think it would be all too easy to continue that way. But the pattern had to be broken for us move anywhere.

To take a step forward. Together.

Being the older one, and the chakra sensor, I took upon the duty to gather us.

… Of course it wouldn't go smooth.

I turned around with only a small amount of trepidation to find a shinobi standing there, chakra flaring subtly, spine straight and ANBU mask covering his face. If I wasn't entirely mistaken, a bird motive had painstakingly been drawn onto it.

What could he want with me?

Hiding my unease, I nodded in acknowledgment. "Bird-san?"

I sensed a ripple of amusement in his chakra. His voice, however, was as dead as it was flat. "You have been summoned to Konoha Intelligence division." He handed me a scroll, which I accepted with some confusion.

He didn't say anything else, nor did he move, so I glanced at him once more before I opened the scroll. The information inside was very bland and formal, the cursive of the letters almost blending into each other by its flourish. The message it gave was on the other hand something else entirely.

I've been transferred to the Chakra Sensor Department?

I closed my eyes and counted to ten. Then I looked down at the text, searching for any discrepancy, but it wasn't any good. I had been transferred, and quite quickly too I might add since I was with Yamanaka Inoichi only yesterday. It didn't make any sense though. I was on a genin team. My missions would be filtered through Kakashi for at least three more years before he could move us to a different department if he so wished. Either that or we would individually become chūnin, and Kakashi's duty would have been fulfilled.

I couldn't be transferred... Could I?

"It's effective immediately," Bird-san helpfully filled in. "I'm here to escort you."

And to make sure I wouldn't run away. And to report on my reaction. And to show the validity of the Hokage Seal at the bottom. And, of course, to delay the inevitable talk with my teammates.

I resisted the urge to rub my face tiredly. I hadn't gotten a good night's sleep since it had been haunted by nightmares, and I kind of wanted everything to be done and dealt with already. I was so tired and not only from exhaustion. It was my situation overall. I could still feel the blood crust my hands, the dead gaze of Sasuke and its other haunted form as he said he didn't want to go back, Naruto's enraged snarl as he lunged for Haku at the bridge and his trembling limbs as he shoved a kunai into a felled man...

I was so, so tired.

´One thing at a time, alright? One thing at a time.´

Allowing the soothing murmur to wash over me, I gave one tight nod to the ANBU operative, rolling the scroll and putting it in my back pouch. Uzu-nai Haru would have to wait. Again, I let my feet lead the way, lacing chakra around my soles so that I could jump on top of the houses together with Bird-san.

It was difficult to surmise beforehand where we were going, but it would have to be somewhere near the middle. Most if not all official Shinobi sanctioned buildings clustered together under the watchful gaze of the Hokage mountain. It was anybody's guess what the architects of old had been thinking considering that they were more vulnerable to a large scale attach where they laid. Though I suppose they were more easily defended, too.

I mentally shrugged. Either way, I used to avoid that place when I was younger. My chakra sense had been too uncontrolled at the earlier years, and it had been much easier to go the long way around instead of stopping to hyperventilate right next to the place where over half of the active shinobi on duty were. I still avoided the place, but it was more of a habit at this point than any difficulty in managing it.

The ANBU I had been following stopped right above one of those building that was only two stories high. It was much deeper underground though.

"Is this it?" I asked.

He was halfway into his nod when he abruptly turned his head to the side, coughing harshly behind his mask. I watched with puzzled concern. "... Are you alright?"

The ANBU waved his hand dismissively, still coughing so hard his whole frame shook from the force. When it finally tapered down, I counted that the fit had lasted well over thirty seconds. That was over half a minute. I frowned. That wasn't good at all. Especially since this was ANBU and they practically defined the meaning of 'keeping it inside', so it must be really bad if he couldn't stop it from pouring out.

"Can you handle yourself from here?"

Despite the coughing, his voice came out in the same monotone as before. I dragged my nod out, observing the languid yet rigid form of the man. Did I know him from somewhere? "Yes, Bird-san. Thank you."

I sensed a flicker of amusement in his chakra before he nodded and flash stepped away, leaving me on top of a building that apparently would be my new base.

Huh.

I jumped down and entered the building unceremoniously. I had no reason to dawdle, really.

The previously muted chakra signals of the personnel inside brightened when I stepped foot beyond the threshold. It was like walking inside an invisible barrier, but my eyes were immediately drawn towards inky spirals above the door where faint roots of chakra stretched out to encompass the whole structure.

Fūinjutsu? Didn't know they could block my sensitivity. Perhaps it would be worth to invest in a few of those...

"Oi!" The voice startled me out of my musing, and I turned to see an older woman banking on the wall behind her. She sat behind the only desk in what looked like the reception hall, papers and pens orderly sorted in her work area. Her chakra glowed to my eyes, the image of a light reflected off a window. "You lazy bastards taking a break? I should be the one on a break! Get out here!"

A signature that felt a little like the rising dawn shuffled outside the adjourning door, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly as he ducked inside. He was tall enough to easily brush across the roof if he wanted to. "Comin', comin', Obaasan! Sorry to keep you waiting."

The woman of 'light' snorted, eyeing him with irritation. Her hair was black and short-cropped, evenly interspersed with white hair strands that briefly touched her cheek when she eventually dipped her head.

Apparently she didn't need to say anything further, for he nodded back and approached me. The man in traditional shinobi garb peered down at me with a polite smile. "Now what do we have here?"

Well, there was no need to beat around any bushes here.

"Evidently I was transferred here."

"Oh!" He gasped out in delight. "Really? Then I only need to see your document..." I handed over the scroll, and he unrolled it, a genuine smile spreading the further he read, until with a snap, he closed the scroll and gave it back. "Happy to have you onboard then. Welcome to Konoha Intelligence; the Sensory division! Our cousin and main Intelligence office is right next to ours, while our brother Torture squad is located further up the street. So," he winked jovially, "if somebody asks, you know where to point them."

"... Ah, sure."

He clapped his hands, straightening to his full impressive height as he grinned. "Well then, let's begin with the tour, shall we? Come on then."

The man of 'dawn' beckoned me, and bemusedly, I followed. The old woman ignored us as we passed through the door, not even sparing us a glance while jotting something down onto paper.

Immediately crossing the threshold, I noticed another fūinjutsu scrawled above the door. The chakra inside sorted itself out in a way I hadn't even noticed felt wrong, and suddenly, it was like a missing puzzle piece had appeared. The details I was usually so quick to notice reversed from fuzzy to sharp and bright. Several floors I had barely seen before appeared underneath us, at least twenty different chakra signals moving through the hallways or sitting stationary.

I blinked, startled.

… Now I had to get one of those.

An amused whistle broke through the air, and I saw the man smiling down at me. "So you're that sensitive, eh? A passive sensor... hm..." He trailed off, tapping the stubble of his chin in thought. Then he shook his head pleasantly. "Nah, don't mind me. We're going to test you later on for all that stuff. I was thinking that getting yourself acquainted with all of us would be more fun for a start. What do you think? We're usually transferred here only once, and then we kind of stay here. So old faces isn't peculiar, but new one's like yours?" He grinned.

He barely waited for me to nod before he was already walking forward, arms waving to encompass the whole room. It was easily the size of our old classroom, desks evenly spaced out and large windows facing to my left. "This is the Ground room, and we just walked through the Reception room where Obaasan normally sits at. That's where clients go in and general information is given for whatever reason it's needed." He shrugged. "I've never been shuffled there, so I don't really know."

Out of the three other people in the room, one woman snickered at his expense. He made a funny face back at her.

I frowned in confusion. "How did she know that I needed to talk to you then? I might have been lost, for how much she knew."

"Hm," he tapped his cheek in thought. "Good question. I think she just saw you reacting to the Sensor Block though. And besides, it's not like we get young transfers everyday. We knew you were coming today, so, " he shrugged, "she's good at assuming things and getting them right."

Well, it had been news for me. I would have liked a forewarning, too.

"What rank are you anyway?" He looked searchingly down at me, eyes lingering on my shinobi tools. "Chūnin? Wait," he held up a hand, taking long strides toward a desk and picking up a stack of papers, "I have your file right here."

He hummed, frowned and grimaced as he rapidly flipped through the papers. I gave him an odd look. When he began murmuring, "I know I had it somewhere," I rolled my eyes.

"No," I drawled, sounding eerily like my sensei at that moment. "I'm a genin."

"What?" His head shot up. "Really?"

I nodded. "Yes."

He frowned. "Oh. How old are you then? Fourteen?"

I raised my eyebrow. "I'm twelve."

"Wait, wait, wait," he held up his hands, "that doesn't add up. When did you graduate? It must have been when you were like ten or –"

I think I was sensing a pattern with his questions, so I interrupted him before he could guess wrong again. "I'm part of the recently graduated class. I became a genin this spring."

He looked more surprised than he really had any right to be. "Really?"

The woman that had chakra that tasted faintly of something wet and cold, snow perhaps, looked up again. "Heh, give him a break. You don't need to look so exasperated," she said, lightly teasing. "You must be really talented to get a transfer so early. You're still in your genin team, right?"

I nodded.

Her smile softened, though her eyes still glittered in mischief. "I got here when I was fifteen and well after I had graduated. It's not often we get geniuses, since they tend to become extraordinary in things other than chakra sensing." She rolled her eyes.

'Dawn' nodded agreeably. "Yes, yes, thank you! Someone understands!" He turned to me then. "Like I said, it's not everyday we get a sudden transfer."

"It's not everyday I get a sudden transfer," I muttered.

Really, it was like the moment I said I should change the way my life was going, I get thrown into the deep end.

From the frying pan into the fire, as the saying goes.

"Eh," he flapped a hand dismissively, "don't bother thinking too much. Since you're still on your genin team, you will proceed with your missions like usual. I guess you're going to start with C-ranks any moment now? The only real difference with getting transferred here is in emergencies and that we get a monopoly on your time if we request a mission. Otherwise, everything's normal."

Oh. I smiled, shoulders relaxing. That was good to hear. For a moment there, I thought that Uzu-nai Haru was no more.

That would have been a disaster.

"Anyway," he started again, "this is people."

Two 'people' gave disinterested waves, scowling down heavily at some paperwork. The 'snow' woman nodded, flashing me a smile.

"Above," he vaguely waved at the only floor higher up, the staircase just behind a door to the far left, "is the sleeping quarters. You can choose to crash here after a long day at work if you want, but they're mainly there for chakra exhaustion. It's a remnant from the wars, you know. A comfy and fluffy remnant mind you, but a remnant all the same."

I glanced to the above floor and saw it empty, but just as he had said, something vaguely formed like beds were lined up in even rows. Good to have, I guess?

"This on the other hand is something much more interesting." 'Dawn' stepped up to the door on the far right. He showed me a staircase that led straight down, smiling as if it was the most beautiful thing ever.

"... That's great?"

He nodded in agreement. "Yes, now it's – Oh! I almost forgot." He turned to point behind me, and I followed the direction to the windows. "When you ever get called in for work, you can jump in from the windows. Don't worry about having to knock or something. They're always unlocked since someone's usually here on shift. The reception is there mostly for non-sensors, and I think Obaasan's grumpiness can deter anyone's mood after awhile."

Jump through the windows like Kakashi does to the Hokage's office. Alright. I think I can remember that.

"What's this though?" I asked curiously. I knocked at the right wall inside the staircase room. Faint lines could be seen outlining a double door, almost like it had been carved from the cement.

"Oh, right, that. If you press here," he fumbled a little, but quickly found some sort of touch sensitive response system at the corner, "the cement will easily cave in and you can drop down here," he nodded down at the elevator-shaft-lookalike he had revealed, three different openings most likely going to other stories of this building. "It's used in emergencies if we have to quickly get to our stations. It's more easier this way, right?"

Almost like a fireman pole. But shinobi style. "That's smart."

"Yeah, almost every official building has one. The upside to being a sensor is that you can easily find clever shortcuts like these." He tapped the corner again, and the doors to the shaft closed once more. "Anyway, where was I? Right! Follow me!"

We walked down the staircase as he began to enthusiastically talk about the place. "The first floor will be the general meeting room. It's where we do the more sensitive paperwork. A locked door with a hallway to the left leads to our cousin Intelligence division when we quickly have to relay reports or when they quickly need to snag a sensor. Don't tell anyone I've told you this, but the Sensor division mainly exists so that they can more easily organize and dole out missions. There's a lot of permanently inactive members though, mainly because they're from clans that focuses on something else than chakra sensing. Like the Hyuuga, Yamanaka and Aburame. We all know they're good sensors, but their specialty lies in other things than just chakra."

Huh, that was actually good to know.

I let the information melt as I mulled it over. "What kind of missions do you mean?" I eventually inquired.

"All sorts really," he shrugged. "A lot of missions goes smoother with a sensor in their team, so don't get surprised when you're in a lull and another team borrows you. And some missions only consist of sensors, so you will be seeing much more of our faces in the far future. Look forward to it," he winked.

I stared at him, unimpressed. "The second floor?" I prompted.

He chuckled. "A lot of things. We have like three hallways down there, and a lot of different doors. Archives, cafeteria, equipment room, emergency gear, emergency food and chakra pills. Stuff like that. The third floor is entirely dedicated to the defense system though." He grinned. "You will see when we get there. First we have to pass this floor."

We stepped inside a room larger than the one above. It had more or less the same structure, though where the windows had hung there was instead paintings and one door right in the middle. It probably lead to the Intelligence. On my right, one hallway that seemed to lead away to bathrooms and a different staircase that went downwards.

"This is people," he introduced again.

A lot more 'people' than before looked up and gave friendly smiles. "New girl, huh?"

"Hello," I waved.

'Dawn' went around and pointed at different things, like his personal desk and another emergency exit, bantering in good humor with his coworkers all the while.

I noted with some bemusement that not even once did he offer any names.

"And this is an ANBU entrance," he explained, stepping forward and knocking against a barren wall. It looked incredibly ordinary if not for the slight shimmer of a cross in the outlined rectangle. If I had closed my eyes so that the sight of walls would have been blocked out, I would just have assumed it was an old fashioned window with my chakra sense and thought nothing more of it.

"Are you supposed to say that?" I asked dubiously.

He laughed heartily. "More like precautionary matters," he clarified. "It's not like we will be able to open it anytime soon, but we have to know where it is so that we don't block it or tear it down in a fit of curiosity."

An older man across the room grumbled inaudibly. His raised voice, however, was perfectly heard. "I do it once. Once I tell you, and no one will ever let me live it down!"

"You tore down a wall. Of course we won't let you live it down!"

"It was driving me crazy!" He argued, huffing in exasperation. "Every painting we spiked onto that wall was mysteriously gone the next day. Furniture and trash cans was similarly moved. And chakra was clustered just right behind it. Don't tell me you wouldn't have done the same!"

He smirked. "I probably would have," he admitted. The man growled when he continued flippantly, "But it was already done before my time, so thanks for that, old man!"

More grumblings ensued. "Youngsters these days..."

'Dawn' turned back to me with a careless shrug. "So now you know, at least. Like I already said, you won't be able to open the hidden door anyway since it's at a different frequency, but better to know than to stare at it all day."

I nodded slowly. "Aha." I traced my fingers against the smooth wall, stopping at the cross-point in the middle. "Frequency?"

"Oh right, you're still just a firstie genin." Something about his face looked very sympathizing and condescending, which was an interesting mix to be seen on anyone. He ruffled my hair. "Frequencies are advanced chakra methods which you won't be learning for awhile. Just be satisfied with that some chakra can vibrate in a tempo that you would have to either learn beforehand to copy or be extremely skilled in manipulating it."

He gave another glance at the wall before he beckoned me away. "Now this, on the other hand–..." he began to prattle on about the cafeteria which he personally found to be the most interesting thing on the entire base as I began to tune him out. I let the information sink in, but I resigned myself to an entirely dull day.

The Chakra Sensor Department looked promising, in a way. It certainly fit me despite my status as a genin. But sadly enough, it seemed that wherever one was, even if it was in a militarized state, the first day would always compromise of show and tell.

… I kind of missed doing missions with my team already.

I sighed, nodding dutifully when he turned around to ask if I had gotten it, before he moved on with me following a step behind.

A piercing scream shattered the air alongside the rumbling of an incoming disaster. The rhythm of stampeding feet shook the seats, the desperate clawing at exits joining the symphony.

I gulped in air, fingers shaking uncontrollably on the sheets that suddenly felt constricting. I could feel Inner rushing about inside me, smoothing down jagged ends that had been upturned.

At this point, Yamanaka Inoichi's visit had done more harm than good. He had been poking in places better left forgotten, disturbing the careful balance I had achieved. Like a ripple of a disease, it spread until it brought forward that to the surface. It made me queasy and so, so tired.

I would not get a good night's sleep this day either.

"Oh, Sakura dear, come here will you?"

Halfway to putting on my second shoe, I stopped in an awkward pose. "Why?"

"Please?" My mom called from the kitchen. "Before you leave."

I sighed, but did as told. Taking off my shinobi sandal again, I neatly lined them up in the hallway before going to sit down across my mom. I noted with some amusement that she was cheerily munching at iced plum-confetti again. The candy had recently become her favorite, and it seemed like she would even eat it at the crack of dawn. My dad had told me horror stories that while I was away, she would raise her knuckles threateningly and demand that 'if she didn't get them now, there will be no else'. Apparently she had gotten enough to make a decent stash.

"Do you want some?" She offered.

"No, thank you," I declined politely. "What is it you wanted?"

She sighed, looking deeply depressed as she took a bite from her candy. "Can't a mother spend some time with her only daughter?"

"... Not when the sun is rising and I have work," I reminded her slowly. She heaved another sigh, and I eyed her suspiciously. "No. Really. What is it you wanted?"

"Be that way then," she smiled, all of a sudden calm again. "Dad forgot to say this, but he will need your help soon."

I frowned. "Something important coming up at the bank?"

"Yes, that's right. We have a lot of very important clients that will be coming to see us this week, and our superior will be checking up on us shortly. Depending on the circumstances, things might clash. We will be needing your help then, as a representative of Haruno."

"Are you sure?" My frown grew heavier. I would help them when they needed it, but that was mostly on checking up on the accounting or jumping in when there was a sudden call for sick leave. I usually weren't present for actual business meetings, even less holding them myself. And besides, "I do have my duties, too."

The chūnin exam was coming up soon, for an example.

She nodded in understanding, frowning slightly in worry. "I know, but when needs must. Hopefully we won't have to resort to this and you can continue on with your missions."

Ah, right, about that... I hedged mentally.

I flipped a coin.

"About my latest mission," I began, and mom gave me her complete attention, "you know when I told you it had been hard?" She nodded, smile dimming. I hurried to continue. "Well it was noticed in the aftermath that I had developed my burgeoning sensor skills. I've been transferred to another department and while I will still go on missions with my team, I might get called out more often to accompany another one too. You weren't here when I got home, so I couldn't tell you then."

"Oh." She blinked. Then she smiled widely, offering me another candy that I declined. "Congratulations, dear! You're becoming more and more skilled every time I look away."

I smiled in relief. That had been a good reaction. "Thank you."

She sighed dreamily. "Ah, such pleasant news. It makes me almost..." She trailed off.

I eyed her again. She was acting odder than usual. It might be something in that candy, but I doubted it. "What is it?" I prompted again.

"Oh, but I promised myself to tell him first..." She smiled mischievously. "It will be such pleasant news. He might get a bit shocked though..."

I had a bad feeling about this.

Glancing quickly at my wristwatch that had thankfully not gone with me to Wave, because it would certainly had either been stolen or destroyed, I counted ten minutes before I would be late to the time Kakashi had set. Which means that I technically had three hours and ten minutes at the very least, but I liked being on time.

When I looked up again, mom was watching me with a secret smile playing about her lips. Her eyes were lit up from behind and her cheeks looked more rosy than before I had left. Was she sick?

"Are you alright...?"

She hummed, dropping a whole candy into her mouth. "I'm perfectly fine."

I frowned in consternation. Why was she being so difficult? She's put up a bit of weight since I last saw her, but –

I realized with horror that I might know.

My mom outright laughed at my reaction. She nodded in confirmation.

"Dear." She smiled a smile so bright that songs could be written about it. "I'm pregnant."

Oh.

That was certainly... news. She was right about dad becoming shocked. She was pregnant. I was going to become an older sister. The child will be born in about six months at most... and we live in Konoha, the one place that attracts invasions like no place other at this time of the generation.

"... Oh," I echoed.

Things will definitely change.

A/N That's it for chapter 21. The whole writing business had been delayed by my holiday, two different full-time jobs (one I quit on my own for better salary, and the other because they fired me for an incredibly silly bullshit reason), studying, becoming an Aunt (!), and generally life. Going over two hundred Word pages on my lonesome didn't actually benefit from all that. Oh well. It took the time it needed, and that's that. But thanks for the patience!

About this chapter, don't you think we're off to a great start? Nightmares, chakra sensor people, and a pregnant mom that really should have been on the chapter before but I couldn't fit inside anywhere. I find it slightly hilarious that Sakura's mom had always been planned on revealing her pregnancy here, right when my own sister revealed she got pregnant herself (though the baby is almost two months old now).

So please tell me what you think, and I will see you all at the next update! And have an artsome day!
