Over a year later...
As Dean and Sam disappeared into the hall, she took a breath.
Jo hoped Dean's plan A to de-possess his brother from the renegade angel would work, and she wouldn't have to step in with B.
But when did anything ever go according to plan?
Not a few minutes after they left, Jo heard the deep exchange of voices, then the audible thump of someone hitting the floor.
Her bet was on the Angel walking out of that room instead of her man.
She turned behind a pillar, hoping for surprise.
Cursing when Kevin walked out from the kitchen, to place a book down on the table, and skim through it, just as Sam rushed into the room.
Fuck.
Jo hoped her surprise tactic would still work.
"Hey Sam."
Her eye peeked out to clock him. He walked slowly in, with deliberation, staring Kevin.
"Hey, do you notice anything a bit off about Dean lately? Between you and me, I'm a little bit worried about him."
He stopped in front of Kevin, her arms and legs twitched in fear.
She had to step in before the angel did anything.
Now.
"Don't worry about Dean. Dean will be fine."
Sam's hand reached out to Kevin's head, and she rounded the pillar, jerking Kevin's shirt back, out of reach.
"Let's just stay away from Kevin, 'kay Sammy?"
Placing herself between the two, she forced her partner to back up.
"Jo-" Kevin's voice started, confused.
"Run, Kev."
"What is going on?!"
"Nothing new."
Jo started down the angel in the younger Winchester's body.
"That's not Sam in there."
The angel tilted his head, playing at Sam, "Jo, what are you talking about?"
"Drop it. Dean told me everything. And man, was he was an idiot to let Ezekiel or whoever the hell you are in. But at least he's an idiot with a back-up plan."
"Which would be?"
She made the angel blade in her hand glint along the bunker's shining lights.
"Me."
Ezekiel or whoever, deadpan-ed; "You kill Sam if you kill me."
"Holy shit." Kevin spoke, shocked.
She ignored Kevin's exclamation, hoping he would be smart and make the run while he could.
"See, that's pretty much a non-issue for me. Dean wouldn't be able to do it, but, uh...I know what the real Sam would've wanted. I don't want to get into it, but I'm kinda stoked I get to beat on his body for a bit, there's still some unresolved issues here."
Jo gestured between them.
"Plus, anyone looking to get to Kevin pretty much always has to go through me first."
He gave her the once over, "I am an Angel, Joanna. You are only a human hunter. You cannot believe you will walk away from this fight."
"Mistake two, for you, bud. You really don't know what I'm capable of."
She slid out a second Angel sword then, pointing it at him as she spoke. Gathering strength from her stones to give her another, magicked boost against him. there was no way Jo was going in unprepared.
His arm straightened out quickly, throwing some Angel energy her way.
She turned and deflected it with a blast from the side, skimming off to wind down the hall and shatter a few bulbs behind them.
Jo quickly mapped strategy; take the fight up and personal so he couldn't pull that angel force shit. It would definitely trump over her own magic in a direct opposition.
If she even had a chance at taking down an angel, it had to be fast and hard, and with every bit of magic she had.
She ran at him, low and snaking.
He threw out energy to grip her in telekinesis, but she was close enough fro it to miss. Fast, she hit his arm away with a hard forearm, swinging her other to pludge the blade into his side.
The angel blocked it, and Jo swung around to smash her free-bladed fist to his face.
He rounded right back to lay a palm on her head, which she ducked and avoided, aiming another stab for his side.
He wormed out of its way and she leveled hard, flat foot-ed hitch-kick to his chest instead.
She sharply avoided another one of his fists; if he hit her without her magical shields consciously up; it was a definite K.O. If he laid his palm on her at anytime her brain would be reduced to juice.
My most interesting fight yet.
She twirled to face her back to him, striking up to his face with some supernatural force.
He blocked.
Jo whirled again and slashed low at his other side abdomen.
A sizzle told her she got him, and she didn't waste time to spin back up and jump simultaneously to get in a magic-enhanced elbow to his side neck.
It connected.
The angel grunted in mild pain and laid his hands on her exposed side.
He pushed her away mightily, and she flew, spinning in the air and crashed to the wooden stands of books. The leather bound novels and wooden shelves clattered down to burry her deeper.
Among the pain throbbing through her bones and skin, she realized he was holding back...and one of her blades dropped somewhere in flight.
"Only one needs to die, do not make me take you too!" He shouted at her in the debris.
She got to her feet as the Angel moved Sam's body pass and toward a terror-stricken Kevin.
Ignoring the protest of her aching body, Jo took three lunging steps and got enough momentum and force to jump and tackle him.
She hit him at an angle, on his shoulders, climbing up to wrap her arms under his pits and twine her fingers together behind his head, forcing his arms up and his hands unable to touch her.
He pounded on the floor, chest-first, and Jo kept her hold, her knees and elbows smacking wood painfully with all his weight.
"Kevin! GO!" she shouted, strained.
Kevin hesitated, dumfounded and watching his partner struggle with the strongest of all God's creatures. If only he had read the angel tablet.
One blade still in hand, Jo tried to crane her wrist around to sink into his temple, the point nicking the skin-
Sam's arms gave one violent shake and it wrenched from her fingers unexpectedly.
Now she was really fucked.
No swords equals no kill, and no kill meant he could kill them without much effort.
She couldn't let that happen.
Before the Angel could move again, Jo wrapped her leg from behind his upper thigh and hooked her foot under his kneecap.
Rocking forward and putting some magic behind it, she released his arms and rolled to her bottom, the bunker spun.
He flipped, his back to her front; upper-torso repositioned between her thighs.
Quickly, she hooked her left under his left armpit, then swung her same leg up over his head to straighten behind it, both heels catching under his shoulder, his left and right arms now completely constricted by the length of entire body, palms stretched carefully out of grabbing reach.
His face lay sideways and pressed into the floor by her weight, and he grunted his annoyance.
As Kevin watched her literally body-bar the arm span of an angel, he shook his brain from shock and frantically went for the triangular-shaped blade he saw drop from her hand in the fight.
"Jo the sword! I can kill him, hold him steady!"
The Angel was contracting Sam's muscles, and Jo was having a harder time to keeping the hold.
"NO. Kev."
She could feel his back straightening behind her to get to his knees.
"No, forget it, just get out of here!" She couldn't see Kevin, but she needed him out before the Angel got to his feet and her hold was lost.
Too late.
Sam's tall body was rising, and her weight was now shifted entirely on his back shoulders as he rose. Jo clung to his arms for Kevin's life.
Kevin, had the blade in hand, and held it up to stab him.
"Enough!" his arms hauled Jo up, over his head.
"NO!" Kevin moved forward to end it, but the angel threw her down heartily on the wooden table, her leg hitting Kevin and clattering the sword to the floor again.
Jo's spine hit it, and cashed through the center, cracking the wood and sticking all sorts of polished jagged splinters protruding into her back. The air was taken from her lungs, and she gasped, tears immediately welled and fell over, her skin burned, blood was leaking, her head was pounding and she was groaning in agony.
Kevin, blade lost, was backtracking and running away from the angel.
"JO!"
Her ears fell deaf to the surroundings, but she knew the Angel was already on Kevin.
Blinking blood from her eyes, she got herself up and found the sword lying just beside the table. She forced herself to get to it.
Her feet and legs unfeeling, she grabbed it.
Jo didn't hesitate to launch herself at Sam's striding back, blade down and ready to kill.
Somehow, he dodged.
She landed harshly between them, but kept her balance with a wobble. She slashed left, right, then with both hands ran the blade down again in one hopeful, final plunge.
Before she knew what was happening, she felt Sam's massive hands clasp over hers, guiding the momentum. Together, their hands directed the blade into her stomach, sinking all the way in.
Kevin turned at the wrenching sound of Jo's breath sucking his harshly. Again, the sight rendered him in shock. He had never seen her take a wound so greavious. Blood was already pattering lightly to the floor.
He felt as if it were his own blood draining, as everything slowed.
Jo felt her fingers grip the supernatural steel tighter, and saw her knuckles grow white around it, and saw the red immediately soak up her shirt, drip down her jeans.
"Through you it is." Sam's voice sounded in her ear, almost sadly, "I'm sorry, Joanna Beth Harvelle."
"NO!" Two voices screamed as one.
Dean.
Kevin.
She looked up, tears still falling.
A blurred Dean was running up to meet them, but Kevin knew it would be too late. He was so far...
Sam stepped in front of Kevin's view to Jo, "I'm sorry Kevin Tran."
"KEVIN!" Dean's voice echoed.
Jo felt nothing but the sword intruding her body, shock covering for most of the agony.
She dropped to her knees, just as Kevin's shout of death reached her ears.
Dean was almost to her, to catch her falling shell of a body-
The Angel slammed him with a force-full of energy and held him against the wall behind her.
Deaf to Dean's cries and Sam's serious voice, she fell to her side, and Kevin was there...lying a few feet parallel to her, his eyes burnt out and body unmoving.
No...
Feeling her body start to go limp, Jo stared at her partner, her brother laying dead on the floor, too far for her to say a last good-bye.
She hoped she would see him soon.
The draining blood was spreading to the wood floor, and she felt it trickle past her fingers.
She was dying.
This was it for her.
The blood was oozing out her mouth now, and the high-pitched resting silence was in her ear, her eyes focusing away from the body in her sight.
Shock.
Something reined Jo back from it, causing her to feel everything again. A splitting torment that she could only gurgle out her mouth.
"Jo! Jo, no - CAS! CAS I NEED YOU! Baby, c'mon, you got this, you got it, you're good, just hold on."
He never calls me that.
Her eyes focused again, and she could barely whisper out his name.
Head in his hands now...they were so warm...felt so nice...to sleep -
"HEY! C'mon, stay with me!"
He wrenched her back, her eyes open again and the pain returning vengefully.
"Jo..."
She wanted to stay for him.
The pull of peace was too great.
There was too much pain on this side of open eyelids.
But she stayed, and she stared, grueling through the agony until the pull gave her no more choice.
Her favorite set of green eyes was the last thing she saw in this world.
