Disclaimer- Well, look what we have here the final chapter to Sweet Surrender. This chapter is kind of short, but eh it's only here to tied things up between Gail and Regina. But I'll let you guys see for yourself. AS you very well know I only own the plot. Everything else belongs to Capcom. As you well know if I owned Dinocrisis the eyesore that is Dinocrisis would be far different... AS in we would have a game that takes place after DC 2 and we would have had some closure.
Bit I'm rambling again without further ado I present to you Chapter 21 of Sweet Surrender.
There's no rest for the wicked. Regina thought as she messaged her throbbing wrist as she eyed the never ending pile of paper that sat before her. It had been nearly a week since her and Gail's adventure trying to get that asshole Kirk back after he had escaped. It was a mission that she would never forget. Tearing her eyes away from the paper work to the framed photo that sat next to her computer.
It was a picture of her and Rick that someone had taken at the last Christmas party. It showed just the two of them, Rick laughing happily as Regina draped her arms around his neck. Sighing she allowed her fingers to trail across the glass before turning back to the paperwork. She knew she didn't have to get this all finished today, her superiors had made that clear after after she had been discharged from the hospital with a broken wrist, and a few stitches here and there. On top of it all she would have a few scars, especially on her face. From when that damned oviraptor had ripped a chunk out of her face.
Hell, for all the bumps and scrapes she had suffered during that mission, she was out of the hospital far sooner than she had expected, while Gail... Regina's heart skipped a beat as she thought back to him. And upon thinking of him she realized that since they had returned from their mission and Kirk was back in custody she had not seen him since they were both admitted to the hospital.
She knew the older man had been in rough shape, but never less she heard he was making a full recovery, but still she hadn't visited him. Maybe it was because she knew that if she went there she would break down, and tell him everything. About how she felt.
Was that really a bad thing? A voice whispered in the back of her head. You two almost died during that last mission. Don't you think you should stop pussyfooting and tell him? The worst he could possibly do is reprimand you for unprofessional behavior. Regina blinked, that was a good point. Tapping her pen against her desk she quickly tossed the file she was working on back onto of the pile, and stood up. Grabbing her worn leather jacket, and headed for the door.
She always hated hospitals, something about them always made her feel uncomfortable. Running a hand through her hair she headed to where the Nurse had told her where Gail was. The curtains were drawn, obscuring Gail from view. Gathering her courage she pulled back the curtains, guilt gripped her heart as her eyes settled on him, laying prone on the bed with all sorts of machines hooked up to him.
Grunting Gail opened his unbandaged eye and fixed it on her. "Regina," he sighed, as he struggled to sit up.
Placing a hand on his chest once more Regina forced him back down. "Relax, old man." She said softly, taking a seat in the only chair in the room. "I've been meaning to come visit you." She told him, crossing her ankle over her knee as she looked over at him, never had she seen him like that before. Hell she had been surprise that he even made it off the island in the state he was in. It just went to show how tough the old bastard was.
"You going to say something? Or just sit there gaping?" Gail croaked.
Blinking in surprise Regina got to her feet once more, seeing the glass of water on the small table in front of him. She picked it up and offered it to him. Taking a sip Gail nodded his thanks to her as she placed it back on the table.
"So I take it the Big Wigs are rather upset over the loss of the Third Energy research?" he asked, as he lay back down.
"AS you can imagine, but I stand by my word." Regina said, moving back to her seat.
"I figured as much. I also thought you'd leave me behind when I was so severely wounded as well." Gail said, turning his gaze to the ceiling.
"And why would I do that?" Regina asked, she already knew the answer to that, over the years she had worked under him she knew that Gail was rather adamant about the missions always coming first before all else, that also meant that peoples lives were not always priority.
"The mission-"
"Came first, yeah, yeah." Regina cut in with a roll of her eyes. "You should know by now that I never abide by that BS so do start-"
"They're retiring me, Regina." Gail cut in, there was an edge in his voice, stopping her in her tracks as she looked down at Gail with wide eyes.
"W-what?"
"You heard me loud and clear." Gail said.
"T-they can't do that?" she stammered feeling the blood draining from her face.
"They can and they did." He said, as Regina moved to his side.
"W-why?" she asked.
"Take a look at me." Gail told her, gesturing to himself, to his bandaged eye. "I'm never going to fully recover from this. I'm blind in this eye among other things. And...I hate to admit it but I'm getting old." He sighed.
This couldn't be happening. Regina thought as she looked down at him, the man who taught her everything, the man she had subsequently fall in love with during all those years working under him, and now here he was torn, tattered but unbroken. She was so certain he would make a quick recovery ans get back in the saddle. And yet, they were tossing him out like he was yesterdays trash.
"That's bullshit." Regina spat, anger tinting her words as he hands balled into fists. "After all you've done for them they're just going to let you go, just like that?"
Gail sighed, of course she would act this way, Regina was stubborn and strong among other things that made him love her dearly. However those were also her downfalls she never did know when to let things go.
"Regina..." he sighed, raising his uninjured hand to place it on her trembling shoulder. "Enough." He said sternly. Regina's mouth snapped shut. "I know you're upset. Honestly I can't blame you. But never less what's done is done. There's no use getting upset over it. In due time you'll come to get over my loss, especially since they are considering you to take my place."
"What?"
"Stop saying that I know you heard me." Regina's eyes widened again, as she struggled to find the right words to say.
"What if I don't want it?" she asked.
"You'll take it, after all you deserve it. If not for you none of us would have gotten out of this alive, even that bastard Kirk." Gail said. "I know despite all this bullheadedness you're pulling you'll eventually swallow your pride, and take the position. After all you love the job just as much as me. And I'll know you'll be a good leader." He told her.
Feeling her throat tighten Regina swallowed the lump in her throat, and nodded. "I understand I-I think I should be heading home, I've got a lot to process." She told him.
"Before you do that I think you and I need to stop pussyfooting around a certain topic." Gail called out to her. Making her stop in her tracks, and turn fully towards him once more.
"What are you talking about?" she asked.
Gail rolled his eyes, and sighed. "Please don't tell me I have to spell it out for you." Gail groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Brow furrowed Regina moved to his side once more. Rolling his eyes Gail looked to the ceiling once more before looking to her. "I got to do it first, huh?" he said. "Very well. Regina I have feelings..." God this had to be the most difficult thing he ever had to do. There was no way she would take him seriously or believe him even if he did tell her.
"Feelings?" Regina inquired.
"No smart ass remarks I know everyone has feelings. What I am trying to tell you is...I...I love...you." Silence. Gail felt his face flush at that as he looked away from her. Maybe Rick had been wrong about what he had told Gail.
Maybe Regina didn't have any romantic feelings for him. "Wow," Regina spoke. "It must have hurt for you to say that." She joked, making Gail scowl.
"If you're just going to joke about it then just forget I said anything." Gail spat, looking away from her. Only to have Regina force him to look at her, a soft smile on her lips.
"I must say I am very happy you were ballsy enough to admit it. Even thought you acted like saying that hurt or something." Regina leaned closer to him, until their foreheads touched. "But I am happy you did." Her voice lowered to a whisper, as if not wanting anyone else to over hear them. "Because I love you too, you big oaf." She said, her smile widening at the shocked look on Gail's face.
"Don't look so surprised, I've loved you for god knows how long, probably since all these years ago or something like that. But never less now that we got that out of the way." Regina's eyes slowly slid shut as she cupped Gail's face and gently pressed her lips to his, and kissed him briefly.
Gail was more than happy to return the kiss, as he placed a hand on the back of her head, and pulled her closer before they pulled away rather reluctantly. "But what will we do now?" Regina asked, brushing a few strands of bright red hair from her flushed face.
"What do you mean?" Gail asked.
"Like I said we won't be working together. So I don't think we need to worry about getting reprimanded for dating. So I think we're safe. Though I got to admit I'm not too experienced in stuff like this." Gail admitted, scratching the back of his head sheepishly.
Regina chuckled and stroked his cheek gently. "Don't worry," she told him. "I'm not too experienced in this whole relationship stuff either. But together we'll make it work." She assured him, placing another kiss on his lips.
Smiling at her Gail was about to say something else, when-
"Excuse me." A voice spoke up, making them both jump, and turn around. Seeing a nurse standing there, clipboard clutched to her chest. "But visiting hours will soon be over." She told them, before moving on.
Glancing over to Gail, Regina smiled. "I think I should be heading home, I'll try and come by tomorrow, you just try and get some sleep."
Nodding Gail watched as Regina left before laying back down and slowly drifting off to sleep. He didn't know what would happen to him now, but he knew one thing though. No matter what life threw at him Regina would always be by his side. And he wouldn't have it any other way...
Good goooood my back is killing meeeee. But whining aside this is the final chapter of Sweet Surrender. I hope you enjoyed it. And let it be known that this wil NOT be my last Dinocrisis story. I got plenty more planned. And with that this is Black Jack signing off. Goodnight.
