"Dad…?" I asked, walking into the Tardis behind him. "Is something wrong?"
"Sit down," he said. I sat down in my regular chair I always sat in while aboard the Tardis. "Addy…" he began. "I'm going to die."
I laughed. "That's funny," I said. "Really, what's going on?"
He looked at me dead in the eyes and said, "Addy, I'm going to die."
"Why?" I asked in a small voice.
"Because I have too," he said.
"Why do you have to die?" I asked.
"It'll save the universe," he said.
"I don't care if you save the universe or not," I said. "You aren't going to die."
"Yes, I am," he said. He went to get something from the consul. It was four Tardis blue envelopes. "Remember these?"
"Yeah, what about them?" I asked.
"I'm inviting everyone to my death," he said.
"But there was only one me at the time, remember?" I said. "What happens to me?"
"You'll go back to live with Amy and Rory," he said. "You'll live a normal life."
"You know that isn't possible, Dad," I said. "I will never, ever live normally."
"Well, that's where we're going," he said. "I'm going to die. End of story." He started flying the Tardis, going to our destination.
I looked on the monitor. It said Lake Silencio, April 22nd at 4:45 PM.
"Why are you going to die at Lake Silencio?" I asked.
"It's not like I chose the location," he said.
"And on my birthday, too…" I said.
He looked at me with a weird face. "April 22nd is your birthday?" he asked. I nodded. "Since when?!"
"Since I was born…" I said. "Honestly Dad, I traveled with you for three years and each time April 22nd came, I said it was my birthday. Oh, and since when did you wear a cowboy hat?" I grabbed it off of his head and looked at it.
He snatched it back from me and said, "I wear a Stetson now," he said. "They're cool."
"Ok, I'm down with bowties and all that, but fezzes and cowboy hats are not cool," I said.
He gasped and looked offended. "You, sir, are no child of mine."
"There are so many things wrong with that sentence…" I said, putting my hand on my forehead.
We still hadn't landed yet. I sat on the consul, blocking one of the buttons he needed to land it.
"Can you move for a second? I need to press that," he said.
"I'm not letting you die," I said.
He made a noise out of frustration looked angrily at me. "Addy, this is something I have to do!" he yelled. "I have to die!"
"Why did you invite me then?!" I yelled back, starting to cry.
He sighed and said, "Addy, please don't-"
"No," I said. "You don't die." I stormed out of the room and into the hallways of the Tardis.
I experienced a jolt from where I was walking. We landed. I slowly shrank into a ball against the wall and started crying.
Dad just came back for me and now he's saying he's going to die…
I heard footsteps coming from down the corridor and looked up to see Dad's shoes. He knelt down and pulled me up.
"It's really not that bad," he said. "You can live with Amy and Rory! They're fun people, aren't they?"
I didn't reply.
"Addy, please, just listen," he said. "This is a fixed point and time. I always have to die here."
"Time can be rewritten," I said.
"Not this time," he said. He held my shoulders and led me to the consul room. "We're going outside."
"I'm staying in here."
"No, you're not," he said. He started pushing me out the Tardis doors. Defiantly, I tried to resist, but he was too strong. I walked out into the warm sun of April in Utah.
There was an old car parked along the side of the road. We leaned up against it and waited for Amy and Rory.
A bus came by and they both got out of it.
"Howdy," Dad said.
"Doctor!" they both said happily.
He laughed and walked over to them. "It's the Ponds!" He hugged them both. I still leaned on the car with my arms crossed stubbornly.
Amy came up to me and said, "What's gotten you so down in the dumps?" she asked.
Dad met my gaze and he put a finger over his mouth. I looked back to Amy and said, "He wouldn't let me stop somewhere else before coming here."
All of a sudden, a gun sounded. I jumped in fright and looked over to see Mum, blowing the smoke off her gun. "Hello, Sweetie," she said, smirking.
Mum and Dad caught up in their diaries at the diner we'd been in before.
Then, we all went on a picnic and I couldn't hide my grief. Even Rory noticed it.
"Addy…" he said. "Seriously, you seem really depressed."
Dad sighed. "Still hung up over that?" he asked. He held up a bottle of wine and poured some for the adults. They all tinked glasses and he put the bottle to his lips, about to drink it.
"Wine, Doctor?" Amy asked. "Since when do you drink wine?"
"I'm eleven hundred and three, I must've had wine some time," he said. He took a sip and spit it out.
"Eleven hundred and three?" she asked. "You were nine hundred and eight the last time I saw you. And how old are you now, Addy? Eight hundred and six?"
"Hmm?" I said. "I'm exactly fourteen today."
"Today?" she asked. "Oh, congratulations!"
"Happy Birthday," Rory said.
"Happy Birthday," Mum said.
"Oh!" Amy said. "We should sing!"
"No, please don't-"
It was too late. They all started singing to me. I blushed and looked away. I noticed a car pulling up behind us. It must be Canton…
Dad stood up and waved to him.
"Who's he?" Amy asked.
"Oh my God…" Mum said.
And there was the impossible astronaut, rising up from the shores of Lake Silencio.
"Whatever happens, you do not interfere, ok?" he said to all of us.
Dad started walking over to it. It lifted its helmet and they started talking. It raised its hand. I waited for it to strike Dad dead…
But something happened. The astronaut shot five times, but missed him all together.
Then, all of a sudden, I was in a different place. I was in my old apartment with Mrs. Popsin. Felix was sitting in my lap and purring happily. I stood up abruptly, making Felix jump off.
Mrs. Popsin looked confused. "What's the matter dear?"
"Where's Amy and Rory…?" I asked. "Mum and Dad?"
"What on earth are you talking about?" she asked. "Your parents have been dead for years and I have no clue who this Avery and Bobby are!"
"Amy and Rory," I corrected.
"Don't use that tone with me, young lady!" she said. "I don't want to have to punish you on your birthday!"
All of a sudden, people burst through the door. They were wearing military-like uniforms and carrying guns.
Then, Amy walked in with an eye patch. "We need to take Adeline Song in for a few questions," she said.
Mrs. Popsin looked at me like I was the devil himself. "What did you do?!" she asked.
"I haven't done anything," I said, my hands up in the air.
"Please come with us," she said. She put her hand on my back and led me out the door and into a black car. She opened the door and told me to go in. I climbed in the car and she did the same after me. I buckled up.
"Sorry about that!" she said. "Nice way to make an entrance, yeah?"
The car started driving.
"I guess…" I said.
"This is you, right?" she asked, holding up a drawing. It was a girl looking in the mirror, but the reflection wasn't mirroring her. "You're the Doctor's daughter, yeah?"
I nodded. "It's me," I said.
She smiled and said, "Oh, thank God! That would've been really weird if I had messed up…"
"Why are you wearing an eye patch, Amy?" I asked.
"It's an eye drive," she corrected. "Times gone wrong and some of us have noticed. The Doctor's coming. We're going to get him after this."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah, but we're dropping you off at the main base. We've got reports of Silence in the area," she said. "You'll meet the second in command there."
"Who is it?"
"River Song," she said. "Not sure if you know her or not, though."
"The name rings a bell, yeah," I said. I chuckled.
"Something funny?" she asked.
"No," I said. "Just… Never thought I'd see you wearing a funny eye patch!"
"It's an eye-"
"Drive, yeah, I know," I said. "Just messing with you."
She smiled. "It was always like this, wasn't it?" she asked. "I don't really remember. I keep drawing and writing everything down that I do remember."
"What about Rory?" I asked. "Remember him, right?"
"I haven't found him yet, but I know I love him very much," she said.
"Yeah, you did," I said.
"Oh, we're here!" she said. "Welcome to Area 52."
"Area 52?" I asked.
"Yep," she said. "Cairo, Egypt."
"Wait, what?" I asked. "We just went from London to Cairo in, like, five minutes."
"We drove onto the train," she said. "Doesn't take long if you travel by train."
"Ok, then," I said. "Train… Sure."
Someone opened the door and I unbuckled my seat belt. "Go with Captain Williams. He's the best of the best," she said.
The man outside the door tipped his hat. "Come with me, Miss," he said.
I got out of the car. I looked at his face and squinted. "Rory…?" I asked.
"I'd prefer if you call me Captain Williams, but that is my name," he said. "You're Miss Adeline Song, right?"
"Yeah," I said.
"Well then, Miss," he said. "Follow me and refrain from touching anything. We'll get you an eye drive soon." We started walking.
"Why would I need one of them?" I asked.
"To see the Silence, Miss," he said. "Only way you'll be able to remember them."
"Oh, I don't need one, then," I said. "I can see them, look away and still remember what they look like."
"Sorry Miss, but that's impossible," I said.
"No, it's not," I said. "I remember them even now. They're white, pale creatures with a weird nose, suits, gross fingers, weird eyes, and very wrinkly. They use the electricity around them to kill people."
He stopped in the middle of a narrow hallway. I accidently bumped into him. "Sorry…" I said.
"How'd you do that?" he asked. "You don't have an eye drive on."
"I know," I said. "I don't need one. I've been saying that."
"But that's… impossible…"
"Only one ever to remember them in the whole history of the Silence," I said. "You could say I'm not an ordinary girl."
"Certainly," he said as he started walking again. "It's just through here." He opened the door.
We walked through a creepy place were Silence members were being kept in tubes. They seemed to notice me as I walked by.
"That's weird…" he said. "They're normally not active for anyone."
"I'm not just anyone…" I whispered to myself.
He opened another door and a workplace of some sort was before me. High-tech computers and scanners, among other things, filled the room.
"Excuse me," Rory said, tapping on someone's shoulder. "We've found her, ma'am."
I was too busy looking around to see who it was. "Perfect," she said. "Hello, Addy."
Hearing my name, I turned to see who was talking to me. It was Mum dressed in all black and wearing an eye drive.
"Hi!" I said.
She looked confused and turned to Rory. "Captain Williams, why doesn't she have an eye drive?"
"I don't need one," I said.
"Oh, that's funny. You really do. How else are you going to remember the Silence?" she asked. "No living mind can remember them."
"There's one exception to that rule," I said. "Me."
Mum rolled her eyes and turned to Rory again. "I've heard her describe them without an eye drive, ma'am," he said. "She really is the only exception."
Mum raised an eyebrow and said, "Really? Describe them to me-"
I sighed. "They're tale, white things wearing suits with a funky-looking nose, four extra-creepy fingers, weird eyes, and wrinkly. They use the electricity around them to kill people."
Mum looked impressed. "Wow," she said. "I guess you are the only exception. Oh, and Happy Birthday."
"My birthday?" I asked.
"It's always your birthday here," she said. "Time's stuck on April 22nd until something happens and either the Doctor dies, or I touch him."
"You're the two epicenters of the hypothetical explosion, right?" I asked.
"Exactly," she said. "I like you! You're very clever for your age."
"Thank you," I said.
I was told to stay out of trouble, not touch anything that looked fun, and not make any wild movements. So, without any other things to do, I sat in a chair across the room that was horribly uncomfortable.
There was a lady tied to a chair that was staring at me menacingly the entire time. Mum told her to stop, but she never did.
Dad, Amy, and Rory walked in not long after.
"Addy!" he said. He came over to me and hugged me.
"Dad!" I whispered so Mum couldn't hear me.
After we hugged, Mum started scolding Dad about how he left time the way it was. Then, the tied up lady started spouting useless nonsense about how this was the death of time itself. Dad asked how they managed to do all this with the pyramids. Mum started explaining her manipulative powers when she has on her hallucinogenic lipstick. Pretty quickly, she started flirting with Dad. The lady in the chair started gaging and complaining about having to watch them. I thought it was kind of cute, seeing Mum and Dad being all lovey-dovey.
"Take a child, raise her into the perfect psychopath," she said. "Introduce her to the Doctor… Who else was I supposed to fall in love with?"
"Not funny, River," Dad said. "Reality's fading away. You understand that?"
"Dinner?" she asked.
"Haven't got the time," he said. "In fact, no one does. Because of you."
"Because I refuse to kill the man I love," she said.
"Oh, you love me do you?" he asked, walking towards her.
Some of the military people grabbed Dad before he could touch her.
"I'm not a fool, Sweetie," she said. "I know what happens if we touch."
Dad broke free and grabbed her wrist. "Stop!" she said. "Get him off!"
Time started moving on the clock. A second actually happened. The military men pried Dad's hand off of Mum and they handcuffed him.
"River!" he said. "It's the only way time can begin again!"
"And if that happens, I'll be by a lakeside killing you," she said.
"Yes, but time won't fall apart. The clocks will tick!" he said. "Reality will continue! It's the only way, River."
"I didn't say there was another way, Sweetie," she said.
Her expression was one that I'd seen plenty before. It was full of love beyond comprehension and enough sadness to fill the oceans. She looked at me that way whenever she had to go on another adventure when she was alive. She made me start tearing up.
I felt a drop of water fall on my head.
"There are so many theories about you and me," she said. "Am I the man who murders the Doctor, or marries him?"
"I don't want to marry you," he said.
"And I don't want to murder you," she said, standing in front of his face.
I just wanted to yell, 'Kiss her!' but that would be really weird so I didn't.
I felt another drop of water on my head. I looked up to see what it was that was making it drip. Through a seam in the ceiling, water was dripping through. At least, I thought it was water.
"Doctor…?" Amy asked, looking at it too. "What's that?"
Dad gazed up and then to the woman who was tied up. "How many Silence do you have trapped here?"
"None," she said. "They've been waiting for this, Doctor. They've been waiting for you."
Rory burst through the doors. "They're out!" he said. "All of them!"
I heard the machine guns firing outside. I felt my hearts beating even faster than normal… I ran over next to Dad.
"No one gets in," Rory said to the military men in the room. They all crowded the door and held their guns towards it, waiting for the Silence.
"And you're all wearing eye drives," said the woman tied up. "Based off of mine, I think. Oops." She didn't seem very sorry.
"What do you mean…?" Dad demanded.
A girl in the room started screaming in pain. She fell to the ground, dead. More people started screaming. I didn't know what to do. People started dropping like flies and I was the only one that didn't need an eye drive.
I ran up to Mum and helped her get her eye drive off. Dad was next. Mum helped Amy get her own off.
"The Silence wouldn't allow an advantage without taking one themselves," said the woman tied up. "The effects on the person vary from either death or agonizing pain." She smiled evilly. But then, her eye drive started shocking her. "What…? No… No. It's me. No! Stop this! Stop it!"
Suddenly, Mum grabbed my hand and said that she needed to show the Doctor and everyone whatever they had at the top of the pyramid. Amy went back to the room we just left to get Rory. Dad followed us up there. It was a long climb, but we all made it up there within seconds. Adrenaline and fear kept us fast.
"Ooh," Dad said. "It's a timey-wimey distress beacon. What good is that?"
"I've been sending out a message to the starts. To the past and the future, saying: The Doctor is dying, please, please help."
"River, that is ridiculous!" Dad said. "That message means nothing to everyone! It's stupid! You embarrass me."
Amy and Rory came up. "We barricaded the door, got a few minutes now. Just tell him," Amy said.
"The reports of the sun spots and solar flares are false. It's you. The sky's full of a million voices saying: Yes, yes, of course. We'll help." She paused. "You've touched so many lives, so many people. Did you really think when the time came when you needed help, you couldn't just ask for it? You've decided that the universe is better off without you, but the universe doesn't agree."
"River," he said. "This is a fixed point."
"I can't let you die-"
"River-"
"Shut up!" she said. "I can't let you die without knowing that you are loved. You are loved by so many people. And no one more than me."
"We are ground zero for the biggest explosion in reality!" he said. "You know what will happen. Millions and millions will suffer."
"I'll suffer much worse if I have to kill you," she said, tearing up.
"More than anyone else in the universe?!" he asked.
She nodded. "Yes."
Dad looked extremely flustered. "Amy uncuff me now," he said. She did. He took off his bow tie and gave one end to Mum. "Tie that around your hand." Mum obeyed, not knowing what was going on. "Captain Williams, please say this: I consent and gladly give."
"Why?" he asked.
"Just say it," he said.
"I consent and gladly give," he said.
"You too, Amy," he said. "Mother of the bride."
"I consent and gladly give," she said.
"Now, River," he said. "I'm about to whisper something in your ear. You must never tell anyone." He leaned in and whispered it. Mum's face lit up and she met his gaze. "I just told you my name," he said. "River Song, Melody Pond… You're the woman who married me. Now, wife, I have a request. This world is dying and it's my fault. You're the only one who can help me."
She looked sad as she said, "Then you may kiss the bride."
And he did.
Their kiss made the universe go back to normal.
I was back at Amy and Rory's house when it all ended. Amy and I were sitting outside in the backyard wrapped in blankets. We were both watery eyed and somber. Dad just died. Amy got another drink from her wine glass and swallowed hard. She actually let me have soda after nine that night.
"He's gone…" she said.
"And on my birthday…" I said. "Woah, my parent's wedding anniversary, and the day my Dad died is on my birthday… Best and worst day ever."
Amy laughed. "Tell me about it."
"Is it weird that I was at my parents wedding?" I asked her. "Without them being divorced before or anything?" I took my first sip of my soda.
"Yeah," she said. "But we're time travelers, so what can you do?"
There was a flash of light behind us. We both turned to see who it was. I was surprised to see Mum in the outfit she wore while we were dealing with the weeping angel army.
"So," Amy said. "Where are we?"
"I just climbed out of the Byzantium and earned my pardon," she said. "You were there. Didn't have a clue who I was, Amy. Where are you two?"
Amy took another sip of her wine glass. "The Doctor's dead…" she said.
"How're you doing…?" she asked.
"How do you think?" Amy asked.
"Well, I wouldn't know unless you tell me," she said.
"I killed someone…" she said.
"In a time and place that doesn't exist anymore," Mum said.
"Yeah, well, I remember it, so it happened," Amy said.
Mum smiled at me and patted my leg. "How're you doing 'Amy's cousin'?" she asked. "You really didn't have to say that. I knew who you were, daughter-dearest."
I laughed, taking another sip, and said, "I didn't know you knew," I said. "Well, Dad's dead and I'm all alone in a house living with my grandparents."
Amy looked a little offended. "Mum's not that bad, is she?" she asked.
"Nah, I love you guys," I said. "It's just lonely…"
Mum hugged me. "It'll get better, I promise." She kissed my forehead.
"Oh, and I found out that your wedding anniversary is-"
"The day your father died and your birthday?" she asked. "Yeah, sorry about that! Didn't exactly plan it, you know."
All three of us laughed.
"I don't think it's really hit me yet…" I said. "Dad dying and all…"
"Oh, but Sweetie, he isn't dead," she said.
"Maybe not to you, River," Amy said. "You can travel in time. You probably see him all the time."
"That's not what I mean," she said.
"Then what do you mean?" I asked.
"Ok," she said. "I'm going to tell you what I probably shouldn't. The Doctor's last secret."
"What he whispered in your ear?" I asked. "His name, right?"
She shook her head. "Not his name, no," she said. "Rule 1. The Doctor lies. So do I. I have to. Spoilers! Like how I lied about not knowing you're my Mum or that Addy's my daughter."
"What did he say?" Amy asked.
"Oh, that man…" she said. "Always one step ahead of everyone."
"What did he say, River?" Amy asked again.
"Look into my eyes, that's what he said," she said. "And you know what I saw? A little version of him, he was a robot with the tiny people inside of him."
Amy and I started jumping up and down and squealing together in glee. Mum joined our cheering. Eventually, Rory came out, wondering why we were being so loud at nine o'clock at night. We told him and his face lit up with a smile.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"Of course I'm sure!" she said. "I'm his wife!"
"And I'm his…" Amy said in realization, "mother in law…"
"Oh, Father dear," Mum said. "I think Mummy's gonna need another drink."
"Yeah…" he said.
Amy and Rory went back inside to get another bottle of wine for the adults. I was sitting with Mum.
"Addy," she said. "I've been wondering..."
"Yeah?" I asked.
"How come you live with Amy and Rory right now instead of me or Mrs. Popsin?" she asked.
And that broke my heart.
I could feel myself start to tear up. I took a deep breath and said, "Spoilers, Mummy."
