'Neve, you've really gotta try and get some sleep at some point.'
Matt looked at his friend with deep concern. Chris had been AWOL for over two months now and nobody had heard from him. Not only that; but Neve with all her skills couldn't even locate him anywhere. Matt stared at Neve sat at her desk frantically hammering away on her keyboard, stopping one of her hands every so often to take a huge swig of the large carry-out coffee she had beside her. Neve's eyes had been continually bloodshot for a while now from lack of sleep and dark, puffy bags had formed underneath making her look even more tired. Chris's disappearance had left Neve an absolute mess.
She never even got dressed up anymore when she was working in the office. For weeks now she had been wearing the same pair of old, heavily worn skinny jeans that really needed washing or throwing out, along with a battered pair of boots that were falling to bits, a t-shirt that was stretched beyond recognition and a faded zip up hoodie whose zip was broken and was full of cigarette burns. Neve practically lived in these clothes; she practically lived in her office most of the time now. Matt had managed to get her out of the office and back home a few times where she would shower if she could be bothered or take a nap on the sofa.
Matt had however somehow managed to coax Neve back home that night. As soon as she walked in to her house, she headed straight for her sofa and threw herself down face first. Matt set about cleaning Neve's house for her as it was in an absolute state. There was a huge pile of letters on the floor at the front door that Neve hadn't even bothered to pick up, there were pizza boxes and takeaway cartons strewn about on almost every surface, a thick layer of dust pretty much covered everything and she hadn't vacuumed her floors at all. In fact Matt was the last one to do it and that was weeks ago. He soon got most of the rubbish bagged up and thrown in to the wheelie bin that lived in Neve's back garden. Even after only doing that, Neve's house looked better already. Matt even vacuumed most of the house without waking Neve up who was passed out on the sofa.
Neve eventually started to stir and was mumbling away when Matt had wandered back downstairs with a basket full of laundry that needed doing consisting of bed linen and the very few clothes that Neve was wearing these days. He placed the basket in front of the washing machine in Neve's kitchen then made his way through to the living room to wake Neve up properly. He soon ordered her to go upstairs to have a shower and change, to which she complied with no fuss. At least then it gave Matt enough time to put the laundry in the machine and order something for dinner.
By the time Neve had returned from her shower, Matt pretty much had all of downstairs clean. He even managed to have a sit down and turn the TV on. He was busy flicking through the channels as Neve took her usual place on the sofa; wearing her favourite pyjamas that were thankfully clean and her hair wrapped up in a towel. Matt had barely been sat down for five minutes when the doorbell rang. He left the TV on some comedy channel then went to answer the door. Half a minute later; he came back through with a bag full of food that he ordered from the Italian restaurant down the road. Matt placed the takeaway box containing lasagne her ordered for Neve on the coffee table in front of her, along with a plastic fork he fished out of the bag. He sat down with his own box of pasta and began munching away as he carefully watched Neve slowly eat.
Neve got about halfway through her lasagne before she suddenly decided to speak. Something she hadn't really done much recently.
'I'm being a huge arsehole, aren't I Matt?' Neve mumbled as she stared down at her food.
'What makes you say that?'
'Because I've not been a very good person to be around recently.' Neve sighed. 'I should really get a grip.'
Matt knew that Neve must have been having a moment of clarity.
'I'm fairly sure Chris isn't coming back any time soon, or at all.' Neve started. 'I need to just get on with it.'
Matt stood up and made his way over to Neve and sat beside her, taking his food with him. He gently wrapped an arm around her and squeezed slightly.
'This moping around, being all scruffy and miserable doesn't suit you Neve. You've never been one to be thrown out of your groove by anyone or anything.'
'I know it's not like me at all. It's obvious Chris doesn't want to be found. I can't keep going at it like I have been doing. It'll just end up driving myself crazy.' Neve sighed.
'You can only do so much on your own Neve. But remember there's a worldwide APB out on Chris, if any one of our agents sees him, we'll know about it.'
'You're right, I can't be everywhere at once.'
'Feel a bit better now?' Matt asked his friend.
'Yeah I do a bit. Oh and um… thanks for looking after me Matt, y'know the cleaning and everything.' Neve sunk her head a little, she was a bit embarrassed.
'Hey we're best buds right? Anything to help.'
The two friends gave each other a quick hug before the got back to eating and watching TV. Matt spoke up again though.
'Neve just do me a favour.'
'What's that?'
'Brush your Goddamn teeth.'
