"If you're planning on rebuilding Overmind and linking yourself back in, you are making a very serious mistake," Jennifer warned Taggart.
"I am rebuilding Overmind to see where we went wrong. Stuart and I must have made a miscalculation along the way. If I can understand what happened, if I can fix things, then Overmind can be what he was meant to be- the foundation to creating a peaceful utopia. If I can set things right, then the people will see me as the great leader that I was meant to be."
"Great leader?" she spat out. She briskly walked over to where he sat on his cot as he was drying his tears. Since he was currently in such a vulnerable state, Jennifer felt she had the control now and was no longer afraid to say what she really needed to say. "Let me be very clear- you will NEVER be known as a great leader. This plan of yours WILL fail. And I'll tell you why. Before you were linked with Overmind, you were a very greedy man who didn't care about anyone but yourself. You wanted fame and you wanted to have supreme authority over everyone and everything, and you didn't care who you had to kill on your way to get to the top. Overmind became evil because of YOU, Taggart. You taught Overmind that the only way to build a utopian society was to turn everyone into machines and take away our humanity! And look what happened! But Overmind took it a step further and decided that the only way to create a true utopia was to delete the entire human race! Don't you see? A utopian society is not possible! But one way to help make things better, one way to work towards creating peace is to start right here…" Jennifer held her hand over her heart. "It is up to each and every one of us to have love in our hearts. To give of ourselves and to share. To live as peaceably as we can with one another."
"NO!" he screamed, as he stood up and ran over to his workbench. "Overmind can be fixed for the good of humanity, and I will make it work!" He grabbed a long piece of wire and threw Jennifer down in the chair and tied her up. "And I can't have you getting in my way."
"Taggart, just listen to me!" she pleaded.
But it was no use. He went over to the chalkboard and frantically started scrawling out another equation like a madman scientist.
"So how much longer is this going to take?" Jonathan asked Scout impatiently.
"I know, I get it, Captain. We don't have a lot of time…but you hovering over me and asking me every five minutes isn't helping. Tank, how are you coming on getting that old computer to reboot?"
Jonathan was glad that they decided not to throw out any of the old equipment that was in place when they first came to North Star. They were able to find a computer that would work with the old technology they were recreating.
"It's up, but there's nothing on it. The hard drive is clean."
"Rats. I was hoping it would save us some time if it already had the right programming installed. Have Mentor recreate a data cartridge for the old satellite imaging program."
"On it," Tank replied.
"Well, my part's done," Hawk walked in, back from his flight. He used the rocket boosters on his power suit to propel himself into the thermosphere to set the newly built satellite into orbit. "Are you sure that tiny thing is going to be able to pick up a signal?"
"Hope so. Given that we're in a hurry and the fact that we just didn't have all the materials, I had to improvise and scale it down a bit," Scout explained.
"A bit? Tank is bigger than that satellite," Hawk joked.
Jonathan didn't find the joke the least bit funny as he sat in his chair in front of Mentor, waiting for this haphazard plan to come together. Hawk noticed the look of despair in his face.
"We'll find her, Jon," Hawk said as he as down sat next to him. "You have to believe she's safe. She's got true grit."
"It's driving me crazy, Matt. What is Taggart up to?"
"We're going to find out real soon," Scout said.
Everyone gathered around the console as Mentor finished downloading the programming onto the old computer system. A few seconds later, a green screen popped up on the monitor.
"And…Voila!" Scout shouted as he pushed a few more buttons that brought the system online. "Come out come out wherever you are, Taggart!"
All eyes were glued to the monitor as the radar's sweeping arm made its way around the entire circumference of the geographical map. No blips appeared.
"It's not working," Tank complained.
"Just give it a chance. The system has to get in sync first," Scout replied.
Another minute passed. "There!" Jonathan shouted as he pointed to the green dot that appeared. "Old Colorado Springs?" he asked in shock.
Hawk shook his head in amazement. "Of course. The last place we would look…"
"Can you get more specific coordinates?" Jonathan asked Scout.
"Yep." Scout zoomed in on the map.
Jonathan gasped. "That's my dad's old laboratory. That's where he and Taggart built Overmind."
"You don't think…" Hawk started but was too enthralled to say it.
Jonathan nodded. "That part he needed from Nigel…what if he's working on restoring his link with Overmind? Prep the Jumpship. We leave immediately."
"So what's the plan, Captain? Shoot to kill?" Tank asked as he was just about ready to board the Jumpship.
"We'll have to assess the situation when we get there. We need to make sure Pilot is safe first. Unfortunately we can't just go in with guns blazing."
"Maybe this guy can help," Scout announced, as he walked into the hangar with Blastarr tagging along behind him.
"Whoah," Hawk blurted out. "Does anyone else find that creepy?"
Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared in amazement at the Biodread that previously almost killed Jennifer and wreaked havoc on Resistance forces for years.
"I thought he wasn't finished?" Jonathan asked.
"He's not," Scout replied. "He's missing his intelligence, speech, and a few other bells and whistles that Jen and I wanted to add, but for now he's programmed to walk, fly, and shoot his lasers at The Silencers. He's essentially another set of big guns for us at this point."
"Good," Jonathan said. "We'll bring him along as added security just in case we need him. Who knows how many Silencers we're going to meet along the way. Have him fly close behind the Jumpship."
"Roger that."
"Alright, let's head out," Jonathan commanded.
