Constance held the canister of whipped cream in one hand, the other was clutched around the bottle of massage oil.

"Let me guess girls. The two of you have lowered your standards to partake in some early morning orgy with some unknown local islander that hires himself out for pleasure. I have no doubt what the trolley full of tropical fruit delights are for!" She placed the oil and cream down. "My goodness, even a chocolate fountain! This is outrageous Maura, no daughter of mine with a social status like yours should be involved in such devious behavior!"

Jane and Maura stared at one another, both looking horrified and rendered speechless.

Jane smiled at Maura, then turned to face Constance and her mother. "So not a good idea then Constance, what the chocolate fountain a little too much.?"

"Janie" Angela groaned.

"Mother." Maura gently placed her hand around Jane's arm. "It's not what you think, well not entirely what you think."

Constance stood staring at her daughter waiting for an explanation.

Jane broke the silence. "Ma, Constance, please forget about the dam trolley, more importantly what are you guys doing here?"

"Oh Jane, I'm sorry honey but Sean was keeping us up to date with what was happening here, and well I just couldn't sit by and watch my baby get into trouble."

"And Ma,...what you called Constance?"

"Yes she did Jane, and I was just about to call your mother because I was concerned as well. So as my private jet was destroyed, I called a friend and borrowed theirs. So we're here to take you home."

Jane stood slack jawed listening, shaking her head. "You have got to be kidding Ma. What, Cavanaugh just let you both hop on a jet and come here! I don't believe that for a second...he doesn't know you're here does he?"

"Yes honey he does."

"Bullshit Ma!"

Maura rubbed the length of Jane's arm. "Jane honey, language."

"Sorry sweetheart." Jane gazed at her.

Angela continued. "He does know Jane." she smiled coyly "cause he's here too." Jane raised her eyebrows. "Janie, he's on the boat briefing Barry and Paddy. He actually asked if you could give him a call sometime today, anytime would be good."

Jane's eyebrows scrunched. "Really Ma, are you serious!"

"Yes perfectly Jane, he said anytime today would be fine to call." Angela looked over at Constance who was busy eyeing her daughter with suspicion. "Isn't that right Connie, Sean said anytime today."

Constance just shook her head in agreement, not really listening to what Angela was saying as she began to slowly walk towards her daughter and Jane. She pointed her index finger at Maura. "You said 'Jane honey, language'." Her eyes wandered to Jane, "and you said 'sorry sweetheart'!" She circled around the back of them noticing Maura had her hand on the small of Jane's back rubbing gently, she continued to walk around them until she was in front staring at both women, her eyes glistening and her bottom lip trembling.

Jane looked down at Maura. "You okay?"

"Yes Jane." She smiled taking her eyes from her lover and focusing on her mother.

"Mother, um I'm sorry you had to find out this way." She reached for Jane's hand and held it.

Constance's eyes followed her daughters hand as tears began to well in her eyes. Shaking her head she whispered "No".

"She is beneath you Maura, she is so far beneath you it is disgusting to think about it!" She pushed past Jane and headed for the door. She turned, the tears in her eyes were now replaced with rage. "Maura. I'll be flying off this island in half an hour. Pack your bags and meet me at the airport!"

The door slammed. The room was filled with a deathly silence except for the trickling noise from the chocolate fountain.

"My God Jane, I am so sorry. My mother didn't mean what she said. She's just in shock that's all."

Jane kissed Maura's hand. "Bullshit, she meant every word." She smiled sadly. "It's okay babe, I kinda expected a reaction like that from your mother."

Angela was outraged, "Who does she think she is Maura? My Janie and you are not disgusting. You both love each other so what is wrong with that?" Angela was breathing so hard and fast she almost hyperventilated.

"Angela please calm down. I'll go after her and explain the situation and hopefully she'll come around." Maura sighed "How do you convince someone that you know what you're doing is right, when all you seem to have been in their life, is a bitter disappointment."

"Oh Maura honey, no." Jane pulled her in for a hug. She glanced at her mother. "Ma, you stay here and look after Maura, while I go and have a little chat with Connie."

The two women were away from prying eyes down at the lagoon to have their private conversation, where Jane had dragged Connie instead of letting her head for the airport.

She had found a park bench facing the water to sit Connie down on, while she stood, to restless to relax, trying to control her anger towards this woman.

"Do you have any idea how much you hurt your own daughter? Do you have any idea, by you hurting her, how angry that makes me?" Jane was almost growling at her.

"She deserves better Jane!" Connie almost yelled.

"What! Because I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth does not make me any less of a person."

"You are not in her social class Jane and you never will be." Constance was almost pleading. "Surely both of you can see that."

"Really, so that's it? Social class? Or is it more than that, like maybe we're both women and you would feel embarrassed having a lesbian for a daughter."

"Do not insult me Jane, I am not homophobic!"

Jane sighed, turning her back to the older woman and running her hand thru her hair. Silence lingered in the air for a few minutes as both women gathered their thoughts.

Jane turned around, she was hurting inside and wanted to scream at the older woman, she wanted her to understand just what Maura and herself meant to each other, however she knew she couldn't. This was Maura's mother and she deserved respect.

Jane smiled weakly. "Fine Connie, I can see what you're saying, I thought the same when I first realized I was in love with her. I had convinced myself I wasn't good enough for her, that she deserved someone better."

Jane sat down next to Connie, taking her hand. "Maura helped me to see that I am good enough for her. Hell, Maura thought she wasn't good enough for me!" This bought a smile to both their faces. "Connie, I cannot give your daughter the crown jewels or a life of luxury that money can buy, but I can give her the most important thing of all….. my love and that no matter what, I shall always be there for her."

"Oh Jane, do you realize what would be expected of you? Maura is very much in the public eye and is required to attend a great deal of social functions. Would you honestly allow her to attend with someone else?"

The detective smiled faded slightly, she wasn't sure whether to be insulted by the comment or whether Connie really didn't get it at all. Jane cleared her throat. "Connie, I already attend the functions with Maura, she always asks me to go."

"Oh, really dear? I just assumed..."

"Well you assumed wrong." Jane started laughing. "Oh Connie, you are too much." She stood pulling her up by the elbow. "Come on let's go back to the room." They walked arm in arm.

"Well I'm still not sure Jane, I mean if I had followed my heart, who knows where I would have ended up."

"What?" The two women came to an abrupt halt as Jane stepped around and in front of the older woman.

Connie looked Jane in the eye, feeling a twinge of hurt in her heart. "I was in love once, however my mother told me no, I was to marry another. A mother always knows best she used to say." A sad smile played on her lips.

"So you married someone else where love played no part."

"Yes."

"Do you regret it?"

"Every day." She whispered.

"Then don't do what your mother did to you. Connie, Maura loves you very much and I know you love her too." Tears began to stream down Connie's face as she stood listening to Jane.

"I do love her Jane, I really do. I just want what's best for her."

"Oh Connie, really am I that bad?" Jane's eye's looked sad as she spoke, Constance noticing the hurt in her eyes.

"Jane, I'm sorry that came out completely wrong. I didn't mean to insult you. I suppose I'm just constantly worrying about her, my only child."

"Please don't worry about her. Maura is not a child anymore and has accomplished so much in her life. She is an exceptional woman, a highly respected professional in the medical industry. She is a genius and yes, I'll admit she can be a little awkward around others." Jane chuckled. "But that's what I love about her. She is a beautiful human being with a kind and loving soul, and for the life of me, I have no idea why she chose me to fall in love with, but I am so very glad she did."

Jane decided to be blunt, she really didn't know how else to say it. "Connie amongst all the success, your daughter deserves to be loved and she wants to be loved, and I'm sorry to say but I'm it. We love each other and that is not going to change, nor would I want it to change."

A smile appeared on Connie's face, her head tilted to the side as she began to laugh. "I'm jealous Jane."

"What?"

Connie smiled "I can see now that's mostly why I'm having trouble accepting the relationship. I'm jealous that the two of you have chosen to stay together, as for me well I chose wrongly and didn't follow my heart. I'm jealous."

Connie held Jane's hand looking her in the eye. "I'm glad too Jane that Maura has chosen you, I really am. I can see you love my daughter with all your heart and that you would protect her and always be there for her, you would never hurt her. I knew this the first time I met you at the gallery. The way you shielded her from harm... from me."

Tears began to threaten to fall again from Connie. "Jane I never intend to hurt Maura, I just know I do. I don't know what she wants from me, what I can do for her...every time I try to give advice or help her out, I seem to hurt her."

"Connie, all she wants is to be loved by you, not judged. She feels she is a disappointment to you and that's all she's ever really been. You call it giving advice, well you're not, you're judging her and Maura feels she doesn't measure up to your expectations."

Jane placed her hands gently on her shoulders. "So Connie, give some motherly advice when asked, or maybe when not asked, but don't judge her. There's a huge difference, you need to learn what that is." Jane pulled her in for a hug and held her close as she spoke. "You know, it wouldn't hurt to praise her now and then. I know you're very proud of Maura just as I am. She looks to you for approval and acceptance and for you to love her as a mother should, that's all she wants Connie."

Jane wiped away a few of the shed tears, gently cupping the older woman's cheek. "Give her the greatest gift you could possibly give her Connie to show her that you love her."

"and what would that be Jane?"

"Well do you still have a problem with me being Maura's girlfriend?"

"No of course not Jane, I've been a fool and I can see you are well suited for my daughter."

"Good, then tell me, would you have a problem if Maura became my wife?"

Connie smiled up at the detective. "No of course not." She whispered

"Then that Connie, is a great way to show your approval and acceptance. You're blessing Connie, give Maura your blessing for us to be married."

Connie smirked trying to hold her emotions together. "Is this blackmail?"

"What!, No, I just know that Maura, like most people would want their parent's approval. If you approve of me taking your daughters hand in marriage, then tell her it's okay. If you don't approve, then say nothing, but don't lie to her and give your blessing if you don't mean it. That would hurt her even more."

"I understand, well it seems I'm going to be the talk of the town. I'll have a daughter-in-law instead of a son-in-law." She smiled at Jane, "All jokes aside Jane, Maura will have my blessing, as do you and I hope you both live a long and happy life together." Tears began to fall down Connie's face again.

"Oh God what's wrong, what's the matter?" Jane was confused.

"My baby's getting married!" she wailed.

With that said Connie broke down in tears and sobbed while Jane held her in her arms, a huge smile spreading across the brunette's face. "Yep your baby's getting married."
