That video went viral in two days. I was high off the feeling that only being an Internet celebrity could bring. I had a spring in my step and a smile on my face. I thought I was being even more pleasant than usual. So what was her problem with me now?
Katerina was trying her best not to look irritated, which obviously meant she was. Her main problem was she didn't know what to do with her arms. She switched randomly to holding her hands in her lap to crossing her arms to leaning back on her bed. I hoped she would make up her mind soon.
"Julia, I have to ask you something," she finally said, meeting my gaze. Her hands folded together on her lap as she leaned back forward.
"Shoot." Let's get this over with quickly.
"Is Garrett the one who wrote the script for that video?"
I was not expecting that. I was definitely not expecting that. Crap, this was the end of the world, wasn't it? "You read my blog?" I blurted out, not quite believing this situation.
"That's not the problem here," Katerina said, shaking her head. "Was Garrett the one who wrote the script or not?"
This was still pretty bad. "Uh...no?" I wasn't quite sure how to answer.
"Don't lie to me," she said.
"Then, yes. Look Katerina, what do you want?" I said defensively.
"Nothing. I was just making sure," Katerina said, going back to her uncomfortable irritation.
It probably wasn't nothing, but I didn't want any of that drama bringing me down today. Whatever was wrong with her, it wasn't because of me. I went back to my blog when her phone started ringing.
"Your phone's ringing," I said helpfully.
"I know," she said just as helpfully back.
This was really starting to freak me out. I flicked my eyes back and forth then closed my laptop. "I'm going to Chicks," I announced.
"I'll be here," Katerina said disinterestedly.
I got out in the hallway and closed the door behind me. I got out my phone and decided to call Garrett.
Busy signal. Guess he was the one trying to call Katerina. Trouble in paradise?
I put my phone away. Probably best not to get involved. It was their problem, not mine. Things would undoubtedly be best if I stayed out of this. Right. Off to Chicks.
"You know..." I said while chewing my pancakes. "It's probably a good thing that we're both single."
"Why would you say that?" Matt asked.
"Because it'd be a lot harder to do these kinds of things at the drop of a hat if we were dating people," I said.
I drew a card from the middle of the board. It happened to be game night at Chicks. Matt had texted me earlier informing me of this thrilling event. The card read three. The front had provided several board games for guests to play. Matt and I had nearly gone through all of them. I moved my single blue piece out on the board three spaces until it landed on a green arrow. From there I was able to slide a few more spaces.
"Your move," I said feeling a little proud of my luck. My piece was over halfway home.
Matt drew his card. He pressed his lips together to keep himself from laughing.
"Don't you dare..." I warned him.
He flipped his card around to show me. "Sorry," he said. He placed his Sorry card on top of the discard pile. He let a few chuckles escape as he switched his last piece for mine and placed my piece promptly back at the starting point.
"I don't think you're sorry at all." I crossed my arms over my chest. "I think you've got a mean streak to you, Matt."
"I'm just following the rules. It's nothing personal," Matt defended.
I drew another card after giving Matt a glare. 12. Great. That was useless.
When Matt drew his card, he couldn't hold back laughing.
"No..." I said disbelieving.
Matt put down his card, still laughing. 10. He got a ten. That would get him home with his other three pieces. That would make him win.
"I think that's getting pretty personal," I said bitterly.
Matt was still laughing. He just had to rub it in my face. God, I hated losing.
My phone started ringing with a screeching "Dude looks like a lady!" Why was Garrett calling me?
"Hey. What's up?" I said as I answered it.
"Jules, I'm really freaking out here," Garrett said desperately.
I leaned my elbow on the table.
"Gare, calm down," I said.
"Jules, I can't! This is an emergency!" Garrett exclaimed. He was practically hysterical.
"What's going on?" I asked. Someone wasn't hurt, were they?
"I've been trying to reach Katerina all day, and she picked up telling me that she needed to think about things!"
"O...Kay?" I said. "I hardly think that's the end of the world."
"Jules! You know that's not what she means. It means she's thinking about us and that isn't good," Garrett said.
"Well, I'll say. Why in the world would she be thinking about us?" I would have puked, but that would be a waste of pancakes.
"Not us! 'Us!' Her and my relationship! She's thinking about breaking up with me," Garrett concluded.
"No way." Somehow I didn't think that was the case.
"Did she say anything to you?" Garrett said.
"I mean, not really. She asked if you were the one who wrote the script..." I started to say.
"Shit, you told her! Jules!" Garrett said.
"And I said no!" I started to raise my voice. "She didn't believe me."
"Jules, I'm dead. I am so dead," Garrett muttered into the phone.
"You dug this grave for yourself. I told you you should have told her about your stories," I said.
"Jules, you've got to help me! You've got to talk to her."
"Pfff, she doesn't want to hear anything from me. You need to tell her, and you need to do it quick," I said. I sipped on my coffee as I listened.
"Okay, okay, fine! But you've got to sneak me into the dorms," Garrett said.
"Why?" I said.
"Because visiting hours are over! Guys can't just go breaking into dorm rooms late at night!"
Was it really that late already? How long had Matt and I been playing games. I held my phone away from my face to check the time. Yeesh!
"Alright. Meet me at the entrance in five in an oversized t-shirt and a pair of skinny jeans," I said quickly then hung up.
"Sorry, Matt. I've got to bail." I gathered up my stuff.
"What's up?" he asked.
"My roommate and Garrett are fighting, and it might just sort of be my fault," I said with a sigh. I reached for my bag to get to my wallet.
"Hey, don't worry. I can take care of things here. You go and help your friend," Matt offered.
I grinned. "Matt, you are the absolute best. You're so awesome." I grabbed my bag and got up. "I'll make it up to you! I swear!" I said as I waved goodbye.
He smiled as he looked back at me, and I nearly tripped out the door. God, he was gorgeous.
He saw that of course. "Ha! Be careful!" he said as he gave a small wave back.
"Yeah, yeah," I said.
Garrett was fidgeting nervously a little ways away from the front door. It didn't look like the lobby secretary could see him.
"Jules!" he hiss-whispered into the night.
"Gary," I said casually back.
"Thank God, how the hell did she find out?" Garrett continued to whisper.
"She might have read my blog, and I might have given credit for the script to a certain Gare-bear," I confessed.
"Jules, I'm going to kill you." Garrett's whispers strained with seething anger.
"Hey, do you want my help or not!" I said.
"Shh, shh!" he shushed me. "Please, Jules, please!"
I sighed and stepped closer. I reached behind his head and yanked the ponytail out of his hair. I handed it back to him, and he slipped it on his wrist.
I fluffed out his hair so it lay on his chest. Damn, how did he get it so soft? It also helped to downplay how wide his shoulders were.
I quickly pinched his cheeks a few times.
"Ow!"
"Laugh, you big baby," I ordered.
"Ha, ha," he said sarcastically, rubbing his cheek.
"No!" I yanked his arm down and linked his elbow around mine. "Higher pitched! Like a girl!"
"Hee hee hee hee hee," he laughed, finally catching on.
I rolled my eyes and started laughing. I dragged him arm in arm to the front lobby.
"Oh Lizzie, you're so funny!" I said. I walked him quickly over to the stairwell.
"Jules, you're too much!" Garrett said in this really fake, really high pitched voice.
As soon as we got to the stairs, I punched him. "Shut up!" I hissed. "You're a disgrace to my gender!"
"Well, I'm not your gender, so you can just get over it," Garrett said. "And what the hell kind of name is Lizzie? Do I look like a Lizzie to you?"
"Yes! Now go!" I urged.
He knew what to do from there. He ran up the stairs as fast as he could and made his way over to my room. He knocked on the door.
"Katerina, I need to talk to you," he said into the wood of the door.
There was silence. I think she was still in there.
"Please. You deserve to know the truth," he said softly.
The door opened inwardly then. Garrett slipped into my dorm room and closed the door behind him.
Well, shit. Where was I supposed to go. Definitely didn't feel like third wheeling it on that love fest. I instead went next door to Chessie and Olive's room.
I found them both up on Olive's bed, ears pressed to the wall.
"There's a boy next door!" Olive mouthed, pointing to the wall our rooms shared.
I climbed up on her bed as well so I could listen in on their conversation.
"Princess, it's not like I meant to keep it a secret. It's just...there's something that I haven't told you yet."
Garrett paused. You could practically feel the tension oozing into the room.
"Jules asked me to write that script because she knows I really love to write stories. And I'm not talking about the movie reviews for the newspapers. I like to write the most cheesiest, most gooey love stories you can ever imagine. I like to imagine couples whose relationships defy all the odds, who love with more passion than they can possibly express. And I know that's not normal, and I know that's not what normal guys are supposed to do, but I can't help myself. I...I'm sorry. Just say the word, and I'll stop because I love you and our relationship means more to me than any other I can possibly think of in my head."
I gripped Olive's covers tightly. Don't you dare. Don't you dare give up what you love for someone like her.
"Garrett..."
I could hear Katerina sigh.
"Garrett, I thought we trusted each other. How can we have a relationship if you can't tell me something like this? I'm your girlfriend, and you were able to tell Julia and not me. It makes me think that I'm not the one who really matters to you."
"You're the one who matters the most, Katerina. I just didn't want to be disappointed in me."
"Disappointed? Garrett, I love you. I wouldn't be disappointed about what you're passionate about. It's like with me and my music. I want us to be able to share things like this with each other. I don't want to be the last to find out about the things you love. If you want to write scripts and stories, I'll support you one hundred percent."
Another pause. What in the world were they doing in there?
"So, did you like the script?"
His tone was a lot happier now. And slightly breathless.
"It was really good. I felt the actors were able to portray your actors really well."
"Actors?"
Oh crap! I forgot to tell him about that!
"Yeah. For some reason that one guy from the last movie we saw together was playing Caleb. What was his name again?"
"Alfred Jones?!"
Both Olive and Chessie looked at me.
"You know Alfie?" Chessie asked me, disbelieving.
I shrugged my shoulders. "I just, you know, sort of bumped into him and asked if he wanted to be in a video. I didn't know who he was at first."
Well, that was one version of the truth. I took that as my cue to get off the bed and go next door.
"Alright, everybody happy?" I announced loudly as burst into my dorm room.
"Jules!" "Julia!" They both exclaimed loudly. They sure didn't look happy. They both looked rather pissed off to me.
"Garrett, Alfie said to get in contact with him if you want to write any more scripts. Katerina, you can stay at my house during Christmas break. Better?"
"That boy better get out of my hall in five seconds before I turn his ass into Swiss cheese."
I turned around to find Sara standing directly behind. She didn't have any weapon, but I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't tear him apart based on sheer willpower and rage. She was freaking livid!
Garrett kissed Katerina swiftly on the cheek and ran out of there. Katerina's face was blushing madly.
"I swear, if I see either of you sneak another boy in here, you'll get a free butt-kicking with a fine," Sara said before she marched back to her room.
It took a few seconds before we both burst out laughing.
"Swiss cheese!" I managed to say through short, empty breaths.
"Is...is it really okay for me to stay with you?" Katerina asked through refined giggles.
"Y-yeah, I mean, it's not like we don't see each other every day anyway," I said.
"Thank you, Jules," she said sincerely.
I stopped laughing then. She had actually called me Jules. A small smile settled on my face as a satisfied feeling resonated through my chest. Maybe she wasn't quite so horrible after all.
