The One To Fit My Better Half
"Fucking done!"
Edward peaked into the living room from the kitchen with an amused frown. Jacob had been sitting in the living room for hours, going over the papers his cousin had sent him. He'd been working on those damned papers for almost a week, but at least Edward had been able to distract him with dinner and… and other things.
Edward wasn't quite sure what they were about. From what Jacob had said, they had to do with extension of patrolling areas in Isles and which Pack had to patrol which area that wasn't part of a tribe—or something like that. Again, Edward really wasn't sure what they were about.
Jacob was leaning back against the couch, his head on the backrest, looking at the ceiling. Edward walked over to him, standing behind the couch, his arms rested on either side of Jacob's head. The copper–head smiled brightly at his boyfriend, kissing him gently.
"Hi," the Shifter said with a large smile, blinking lazily up at Edward.
"Hello," Edward replied, he too smiling. He could already feel a blush creeping to his cheeks. He was ridiculous.
Jacob cellphone vibrated loudly on the table and the Shifter sighed. Edward moved away enough for the Prince to sit up and get his cellphone. Edward threw a leg over the couch, then the other and slid down to sit beside Jacob who was sending returning a text. When Edward peaked to see what the text said, he found it wasn't being written in English. Jacob let out a sigh, rolling his phone in his hand impatiently, and waiting for a reply. When it came, the Prince scrubbed at his face before replying.
"What's up?" Edward asked after watching the process three more times. The copper–head could almost hear the Prince's thoughts, whirring in his head as he worried about whatever was being said on the phone. Outwardly, Jacob as almost painfully tense, but Edward could feel the worry, and something close to fear. It was confusing and worrying and Edward wanted Jacob to relax, to talk to him.
Jacob scrubbed at his face again before leaning back on the couch. Edward shifted closer to the Prince, wrapping his arms around Jacob's one arm and leaning his chin against Jacob's shoulder, breathing in the woodsy, musky scent of the Shifter. It seemed to relax Jacob, if only slightly.
"You uh… you know you can tell me anything, right?" Edward asked softly. Jacob turned his head, eyes meeting his Imprints. He smiled, then softly kissed Edward's forehead, leaning his own head against Edwards.
"I know, babe." Jacob sighed, sitting up and glaring at the phone in his hands. "I have to go back to La Push."
"Oh." Edward didn't know what to say. He'd never really asked Jacob about the Prince going back to La Push, and on top of that, he hadn't asked how long Jacob had even been away.
"People are asking questions about my whereabouts and well I don't think you're ready for the cam–spies–from–hell."
"Cam–spies–from–hell?"
"Paparazzi."
"Yeah no, I'm definitely not ready for that." No, Edward defiantly wasn't ready for any of that, not for a long time. He'd probably never be ready for people following him around, taking interest in his life—dissecting his life.
"So yes, I have to go home soon. And then I have a whole lot of meetings with the Elders to get through because they want to know about you, and when we're getting married, and when we're planning on having a child to produce an heir and a whole lot of things that neither of us is ready for."
"Why are they so pushy about the marriage thing?"
"I was supposed to be King like a month after I turned twenty–one, but didn't have an Imprint, wasn't even close to finding a Mate. The Elders agreed to give me a month to find my Mate or else they'd have to Force an Imprint on me. If I denied that, then I'd lose the Throne and someone else would take it."
"But… but you have an Imprint now."
"Yes. But we're not planning on getting married any time soon. It's been almost two months now and Cousin Sol's supporters are getting impatient. They're pushing for him to take the Throne because his son already has an Imprint and a son with an active Shifter gene on the way."
"Wait, how do they know his son has an active— —"
"Shifter gene? They have tests and stuff. I don't know much, mom never let them do it to me. She said I'd Shift when the time was right and if I didn't, then too bad."
"Seriously?"
"She was badass that way." Jacob sighed, scrubbing at his face again. "The guys are already packing back at the house. We're supposed to leave in a few days. I… the Elders want to actually see you, know you're real and I'm not just making you up or anything."
"They'd think that?"
"They probably see me as a desperate Shifter wanting to keep the Throne. They're sure I'd do anything."
"Hmm…" Edward went silent, thinking.
He and Jacob had only known each other for a short while. They'd only gone on like one proper date—though they'd spent so many hours texting and getting to know each other in that way. They got along really, really well, and Edward was as madly in love with Jacob as Jacob was with him—this, Edward was pretty sure of.
Edward was planning on spending the rest of his life with Jacob, he really was. Although they'd only been living together for a week, he really did like it and figured he could do this for the rest of his life, wake up next to Jacob, make him breakfast, cuddle and make–out for hours—although he supposed when they did marry and move to La Push, Jacob would have other responsibilities.
He didn't want Jacob to lose the Throne, not because of him, not because he was scared about marriage life. He loved Jacob, Jacob loved him, he did want to marry Jacob, he felt comfortable with Jacob, so much more so than he had with anyone in his life.
In the week that Edward had stayed with Jacob in this little cabin by the beach, he'd learned a whole lot more about Jacob, and not just the man, but the Wolf. He'd watched Jacob Shift in and out of his Wolf form, had gone on walks with the Wolf, connected with the Wolf.
Jacob said that that was really rare, that only one other person in the history of Shifters and their Imprints had ever connected in that way with their Imprinters Wolf, almost being able to share thoughts with the Wolf. Of course Jacob had freaked out about it at first, had even called his father to make sure there wasn't something wrong, but the King had just laughed joyously and told Jacob that he should be happy that the Wolf accepted Edward in such an intimate way.
Edward sighed, leaning just a little closer to Jacob. God, he really did want to be with Jacob, like this, for the rest of his life. He wanted to give Jacob children, wanted Jacob to keep the Throne because Edward knew how important it was to Jacob. He'd heard Jacob talk about what he wanted, what he wanted La Push to be like, how he planned on ruling La Push. It was something else, watching the Kingliness of Jacob shine as he spoke about his home. Edward didn't want to take that away from Jacob, he wanted to always be able to see it, see that twinkle in the Prince's eyes as he spoke about his People, about his Land, he wanted to always see that smile.
So marrying Jacob sooner than he'd planned wasn't such a bad thing, was it? It's not like Edward didn't want to marry Jacob, it's not like he didn't already love the man unconditionally. It's not like he didn't want to give Jacob children—Jacob didn't care whether he had sons or daughters, he just wanted children he could be proud of and god if Edward didn't love him more for that. He wanted all this and more, he wanted to spent his life beside this man, he wanted to grow old with this man, raise children with him.
And maybe Edward didn't know if he'd be able to handle being 'husband of the King', he still wanted to be by Jacob's side, still wanted to take on the roll and do the best he could do. Jacob didn't expect him to be perfect at it, like he didn't expect Jacob to always getting being King right. They'd make mistakes, probably fight about things, but that was what being married and being in love was about, right?
He'd watched his parents' marriage growing up. Knew there were ups and downs and sometimes there were storms, but he also knew that it was also rainbows and sunshine and sometimes it just was. And Edward really wanted that with Jacob, wanted to go through it all with him. And if they had to do it sooner than Edward had planned, than so be, then let it be done. He'd stick by Jacob's side till the very end and he knew Jacob would stick by him too.
"Maybe getting married sooner wouldn't be such a bad thing," Edward said quietly against Jacob's thick arm. The Shifter was silent, and Edward was almost sure that the Prince hadn't heard him, but then Jacob turned to look at him and Edward looked back.
"Ed…"
"I mean it. It's not like I'm making us wait because I'm not sure if I want to be with you or not. I love you, and I know what the Isles mean to you, what they mean to your uh to K–Kwoli, how close you are to Q'wati." Jacob couldn't help but smile proudly at the use of the words. He'd been telling Edward the Quileute Legends and he was glad to know that Edward was paying so much attention everything Jacob was teaching him.
"So you want to get married?"
"Yes." Jacob tried not to smile but couldn't stop it. He wrapped his arms around Edward and kissed his temple.
"Okay then lover."
"'Okay then lover' what?"
"Okay then lover, nothing. So about meeting the Pack…?"
"Mweep." Jacob laughed.
"What kind of response is that?"
"Mm uh… I don't… What— what if they don't like me?"
"They'll love you."
"Yeah… that's what you say now. But what if I walk in and they're all just like 'ew'."
"They wouldn't."
"You don't know that. You know how easy it is for you to just be like 'they wouldn't do that' but you don't know."
"I promise they won't, okay?"
"I don't believe you, but if we really must meet your Pack, then fine."
"Seriously?"
"Might as well."
"They really won't hate you, I promise."
"Okay, lover." Jacob grinned.
"So when would you like to do this?"
"When are you supposed to leave me?"
"Why are you trying to make me feel bad about leaving?"
"I'm not! I'm just asking."
"Sure, sure." Edward smacked Jacob's arm before leaning back against him. "Okay, so the Pack and I have to leave in a few days. From what I heard, they don't really have much planned till we leave, so."
"Tonight then! I'll meet them tonight."
"You can meet their Mates and Imprints too."
"What?" Edward sat up, looking at Jacob with wide eyes.
"No, you can't back out now. I'm sending the text to the guys." Jacob grabbed his phone and was typing and sending before Edward had enough time to react. "There, done. You're having dinner with the guys tonight!"
Edward pulled an unimpressed face. "Yay." Jacob laughed, pulling his Imprint close to him and kissing his temple. Edward's own phone vibrated. He looked at it for a long moment not wanting to move from Jacob's arms, but the phone just kept going till finally he sighed, extracting himself from Jacob almost as if it was painful.
"You're so dramatic," Jacob accused, chuckling.
"Am not!" Edward unlocked his cellphone and found ten messages from Melody. He rolled his eyes but then read the text.
Melody: Open E!
Melody: You're boyfriend's on!
Melody: Open!
Melody: Have you seen?
Melody: He's so fucking sexy!
Melody: Oh my goodness, he looks good half naked!
Melody: He must look so much better *fully* naked!
Melody: Ignore that
Melody: Have you opened it yet?
Melody: Open fricking E!
Edward rolled his eyes and grabbed the remote, turning the TV on and surfing the channels till he got to E!
"Prince Jacob hasn't been seen for at least two months and people are speculating about his whereabouts." Pictures of Jacob at the beach in nothing but beach shorts flashed through the screen. "According to the official website, 'The Prince has gone on a sacred journey that will allow him to find himself and be a leader that the Isles needs'. But now it seems Princess Rosalie has also disappeared off the face of the earth. Could this mean that the pair are finally getting together?"
"Eew!" Jacob muted the TV and turned to look at Edward's phone which vibrated with a new text.
Melody: But we all know how untrue that statement is. He went hunting for D, more specifically Edward's D *LOLOLOLOLOL*
Jacob burst out laughing reading Melody's text. Edward smacked him before texting his cousin back.
Edward: Seriously? He's looking over my shoulder and laughing at you. He thinks you're insane, I hope you know!
Melody: You're with him?! Why the hell didn't you say something before I texted you all that stuff? Now he's going to think I want in his pants!
Edward: Don't you?
Melody: Beyond the point! And he wouldn't want me anyway; he's all wrapped up with you.
Melody: Ah well, his loss.
Edward: His loss?
Melody: My very big loss )":. I could've been everything for him!
Edward: He's lying on the floor laughing.
Melody: Why are you even showing him this conversation?
Edward: I wasn't! He read it himself and now he's laughing.
Melody: Oh my gosh!
Melody: Oh hey look, they're doing a special on all of Prince Jacob's possible wives and husbands to–be.
Melody: I'm excited to see who your competition would have been. I know the Denali sisters are fan favourites, and the Vampires.
Edward: He's stopped laughing and is pulling a disgusted face. He hates the Vampires.
Melody: Yeah, most people do.
Edward: You wanted to be a Vampire.
Melody: I was younger then, I didn't know any better!
Edward: It was two years ago.
Melody: Exactly! I've changed in those two years.
Melody: Mom's recording the E! Special so you can watch it later.
Edward: What special.
Melody: Of all the people that might've been married to Prince Jacob of La Push.
Melody: Oh lookey, before that they're having one where they talk about what Prince Jacob of La Push's role will be as King and what will be the role of his Consort.
Melody: Mom's going to take notes and e–mail them to you, for when you're ready.
Melody: Watch it with me so we can comment together.
Edward: Okay.
Edward unmuted the TV. Jacob sat up from the floor to see what was happening and scrunched up his nose.
"Ed, why?" he whined, when the next program was advertised.
"I want to know."
"They lie. They'll lie! Ed, no, why?"
"I'm texting with Melody."
"Is there food? I'd rather stuff my face than watch this."
"I made earlier for you." Jacob got up from the floor and disappeared to the kitchen while Edward turned the volume up and got comfortable and ready to 'live text' with his cousin.
"La Push Isles is home to many exotic plants and animals. It is a place rich with culture and vibrating with happy, friendly people. One of the richest places on the planet, the Isles has much going for it, especially with the Heir to the Throne, the dashing Prince Jacob Black."
Jacob made a loud, disgusted noise. Edward chuckled, rolling his eyes at his boyfriend's antics.
"Voted sexiest Royal and topping the list on Forbes richest Royals under 25, the Prince is not lacking in looks and charms."
"Someone make it stop!"
"Shut up, Jacob. I'm actually enjoying this, it's interesting so far. Look at all these pictures of you and the Denali sisters. No wonder they think you might end up with one of them. Oh hey, there's one of you and Princess Rosalie on your birthday. She's really pretty."
"She's into older men apparently," Jacob said, peaking from the kitchen, "men with moustaches." Edward laughed.
"Does that hurt your feelings?"
"Not in the slightest. She's like my sister. I'm so glad she's met someone, maybe now her mother will stop trying to set her up with all these other Royals."
"Aha… Now shh, I want to hear what Vivian Leroé has to say about your relationship with Princess Rosalie and the Denali sisters."
"Who's that?"
"Shh!"
A woman with all shades–of–green hair and equally exotic make–up and clothes—Jacob pulled a horrified face at the entire ensemble, but what did he know about the goings on of fashion—came onto the screen and started talking, hands moving widely while she spoke about La Push and its levels of secrecy. Jacob tuned her out because he actually didn't care what they were talking about, never did.
Edward seemed absorbed in it though, sharing texts with Melody while also commenting out loud—though Jacob wasn't actually listening. Jacob rolled his eyes at his Imprint. With a sigh the Shifter climbed over the couch and sat down beside Edward. His Imprint turned to look at him and smiled brightly.
"What?" the Prince asked.
"Nothing," Edward replied, though a blush crept to his cheeks. Jacob loved how easy it was to make Edward blush, he enjoyed watching the colour rush onto his Imprint's cheeks, colouring his deliciously pale skin. "And you're distracting me, I'm watching."
"Ugh! But it's boring."
"It's actually really interesting. And like… Melody thinks you and Prince Benjamin would make beautiful children."
"Probably… does she know?"
"About?"
"The baby making thing?"
"No, she's just saying."
"And you agree."
"He's gorgeous. And those eyes…"
"Yeah… We dated."
"No!" Edward sounded scandalised, smacking Jacob's arm with one hand while the other went to his heart. He wondered how this had never made the gossip columns—but then he remembered how he actually didn't read those enough to be in the know, so it could be that it was and he just missed it.
"Yeah, it was all over the news. Well speculations, but nothing was ever confirmed and we broke up a while later anyway, so there was no use coming out about it."
"No!"
"Yes."
"So you could've married Prince Benjamin of Egypt but didn't?"
"It didn't feel right, so we just…" Jacob shrugged.
He'd liked Jimmie enough, maybe if push–had–came–to–shove he may have chosen him to be his husband, but it just hadn't felt right, hadn't felt complete. Jimmie had understood that and they'd just mutually broken it off because Jimmie deserved someone who'd love him completely and not spent the rest of his life trying to fill a hole.
"And besides, I think he's dating Nahuel now and from what I hear from the Twins they're pretty damn happy together. I guess Jimmie belongs on the Isles since he's dating another person from there and it seems pretty serious."
"Nahuel the half–Vamp?!" Jacob flinched away at the screech of Edward's scandalized voice.
"Why are you so loud?"
"Sorry, it's just… I don't believe it! And since when is Nahuel a person of the Isles? I thought you said he was a half–Vamp."
"His mother was a Native. His father did some not so savoury things in order for Nahuel to be born. She didn't survive the birth and he's been living with his aunt for years. He bit her and she changed; so…"
"So if he accidently bit you?"
"RIP Jacob."
"Huh…"
"Yeah. Anyway, I think I'm going to completely distract you now."
"Wha— —" Before Edward could finish the question, Jacob was on him, kissing him hungrily. Edward didn't protest at all, fingers curling into Jacob's hair as he brought as much oomph to the kiss as he got, completely forgetting about the TV and 'live texting'.
Yeah, Jacob preferred this to TV anyway…
…TBC…
Mother effing hell! This was a long chapter of absolute fillering. Even though it's a lame chapter I still actually like it, not much happened but a lot happened, so yeah, that… anyway, next chapter Edward's going to meet the Pack *YAY*
Anywhoo…
