Chapter 21: Hallway of Jealousy
Weeks passed after that night at the Dirty Robber. Maura and Jane were happier than ever, they couldn't stay away from each other very long, and they were totally in love. The tall brunette took her beautiful girlfriend to different places around Boston, since Maura was relatively new in town and didn't know that many places. Maura loved when they went to the New England Aquarium, Jane kept giving the sea turtles funny names and telling how they missed their cousin Bass. Maura laughed at the names, but gave Jane a thirty minute talk on how Bass was a tortoise and therefore very different from sea turtles. Jane refrained from rolling her eyes during that lecture. It made it easier to do seeing as Maura was really cute when she was like that.
It was a normal day at school, Jane was leaving her very boring math class and was texting Frost asking him if he wanted to meet after school, when she bumped into someone. Jane immediately bend down to collected the other person's books that she accidentally dropped. She hadn't seen who she bumped into yet.
"I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking were I was going-" Jane was apologizing getting up, but the other person interrupted her.
"It's okay, Jane."
"Oh… it's you." Jane said giving the books back to Addison. She just wanted to get away from there as quickly as possible.
"You used to be so happy when you saw me." Addison took the books from Jane and put a hand on her chest.
-R&I-
Maura was across the hallway when she saw Jane giving the other girl her books and then watched as she put her hand on Jane's chest. Maura just turned and left, pretending she was never there. She knew Jane would never cheat on her, but she couldn't help the pang of jealousy that stabbed her right in her heart.
-R&I-
"Don't touch me, you bitch." Jane said, forcefully removing Addison's hand from her chest and stepping back. She stared Addison down, balling her hands into fists.
"And you used to call me Addie, I remember when you screamed my name, do you Jane?" Addison smirked, trying to get a rise out of Jane.
"Shut up Addison, get away from me". Jane turned on her heel and left Addison standing there, trying to calm herself down. She was sure she wouldn't be able to concentrate on the next class.
-R&I-
At lunch Maura was quiet. She kissed Jane when they meet at the cafeteria, but just a peck on the lips, nothing more. Jane noticed that she didn't rest her hand on her thigh like the blonde always did, or did anything to get closer to Jane. It worried her, but the other girl could just be imagining things.
Frost was telling a story about how he got rid of a detention earlier that morning, but Jane couldn't concentrate, she was too worried about Maura. She had to know what was wrong.
"What happened, did I do something wrong?" She whispered so only Maura could hear. Her voice was filled with worry and Maura immediately regretted her thoughts. Jane loved her too much to cheat on her.
"I'm sorry, it's nothing." She answered with a half-smile, trying to play it off as nothing.
"You know I love you, right?" Jane said quietly, and Maura put her hand on her thigh like always. It made Jane less worried, but Maura's behavior still concerned her.
"Oh look who it is, Jane Dyke Rizzoli." Said some boy. Maura couldn't figure out who he was, but she knew him from somewhere.
"Get lost bastard, I don't want to deal with you today." Jane said bitterly, anger evident in her voice. Maura looked between the two of them, wondering what was going on.
"Am I really the bastard Jane? At least I'm not afraid to go home, I don't have a daddy that beats me." The boy spoke with a baby voice, making fun of Jane. The girl could feel her anger rise, but she didn't want to scare Maura.
"I said get out, Tommy." She said through her teeth, balling her hand into a fist to try and calm her down. Maura felt Jane's muscles tighten under her hand.
'Tommy! That's it! I remember him now, he was the boy who forced himself on me at that party I saw Jane at again' Maura thought, finally figuring out who he was.
"How does daddy think about your new girlfriend? I bet he likes it, he always wanted a boy anyway and since your brother can't bring a girl home I guess you're more a man than him, right dyke?" He crossed his arms, smirking. Jane knew what was coming next wouldn't be good. For Tommy. "I gotta say sis, she got a hot piece of as…"
Before Tommy could finish Jane was on him. She pushed him to the floor and started throwing punches at him. Maura gasped in horror when she heard the sound of a bone breaking and watched as blood poured out of Tommy's nose.
"Don't you dare talk about them!" She kept on him, until she heard Maura's gasp. She stopped and turned around, seeing Maura look down at them in horror. Jane swallowed and got up. Taking one last look at a bleeding Tommy and a horrified Maura, she turned and fled the cafeteria. She couldn't believe Maura had just seen her like this.
Frost went running after Jane, but Maura couldn't move. She didn't know this Jane, she didn't know she could be this violent. Even if it was because Tommy was disrespecting the people she cares about. And why did he call her sis? Jane had one brother. That she knew of. She hadn't realized she had asked that out loud.
"He's her half-brother." A voice answered. Maura turned, coming face to face with Addison.
"She only tells that to people she really trusts and cares for." Addison put a hand on her shoulder, which Maura shook off. "You're only a distraction to her Maura, everybody knows she loves me. She wants us to get together again, didn't you know? She's just passing the time with you."
Maura couldn't take this anymore. So she had been right all along. Tears filled her eyes and she ran out of the cafeteria. She didn't want people seeing her cry. Especially not Addison. The only thing she kept thinking about as she ran was Jane. It turned out that she wasn't the person Maura knew or loved. The blonde just didn't know what to believe anymore at this point.
-R&I-
Hours passed and Jane found herself at Maura's front door. She'd texted before coming not knowing if Maura wanted to see her, but she didn't get an answer from the blonde. Jane was worried that Maura was scared of her. What happened in the cafeteria wasn't something Jane was proud of. On the contrary, she was deeply ashamed. Not that she hit Tommy, but that Maura had seen it. She couldn't believe she let the guy get to her like that.
Her maid, Maria opened the door for her, giving her a small smile and letting her in. She told her Jane could find the blonde in her room. And that's where Jane found her. She was lying on her bed with her hands folded on her stomach looking at the ceiling. The door was slightly ajar and Jane knocked before entering.
"Can I come in?" She spoke with a small voice.
Maura nodded but didn't look at the other girl or made a move to stand up. Jane sat in the chair across the bed and sighed, wringing her hands together. She had no idea where to start.
"I know saying I'm sorry isn't enough. But I am." Jane started, looking at Maura who still hadn't moved an inch. Jane licked her lips before continuing. "Before we met, I was a totally different person. I used to get into fights a lot. About anything, it didn't matter what it was about. I guess I did it because I couldn't fight at home. I can't actually do anything to make my life better… easier." She took a breath "But since you came along I got better, my life did. I had somebody that truly loved me. And cared for me." Maura turned her head to look at her, but Jane was facing down at her shoes. "I'm ashamed by my behavior today at school, that was not who I am any more, but I couldn't let him get away with everything he said. I just couldn't."
"When were you going to tell me he is your half-brother?" Maura sat up "Let me rephrase that, were you going to tell me about him?" She raised her voice slightly, making Jane look up. "Because I had to find out about it through another person that wasn't you. And the worst thing was that your ex-girlfriend told me".
Jane looked away from Maura, embarrassed. "I didn't want you to know."
Maura was taken aback. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Though now that she thought about it, she remembered what Addison had told her. That Jane only told the people she loved and cared about. Which clearly didn't include her. "You don't love me enough. That's it isn't it? You don't love me and trust me enough to tell me these things." Maura said with tears in her eyes.
"What? Of course I do, that's the exact reason why I didn't tell you!" Jane got up from the chair and walked towards Maura to comfort her.
"Stop!" Jane stopped dead in her tracks, letting her arms fall down at her side. "I don't know you anymore. First the fight at school and now finding out that Tommy is part of your family? And apparently you still love Addison. I saw you today you know, in the hallway. You two looked pretty close."
"Wh-? Maura, I love you with all my heart. I don't feel anything for Addison! I bumped into her today by accident and I helped her pick up her books, that was it. I swear I didn't even know it was her until I looked up." Jane sighed "You know, it actually hurts me to think you thought I was cheating on you. I used to be a bad person Maura, but I've never cheated in my life, and I would certainly not start cheating on the love of my life." She took one last look at Maura and turned to leave. She had to get out of there. Nothing she would say would get through to the blonde and it would only make both of them angrier. And that wasn't a good emotion to be feeling right now. It hurt her to leave the blonde behind like this, but she knew it was the right thing to do. She had to if their relationship would live to see another day. "Goodnight Maura". Jane left the room, tears threatening to spill over. But she wouldn't cry. Not until she was out of there. She didn't look back at Maura, knew she wouldn't have the strength to leave if she did.
Maura couldn't move. She watched Jane leave the room, without looking back at her. She couldn't fathom the pain that she felt at that moment. It was as if her heart was being ripped out of her chest. She could barely breathe. Silent tears made their way down her cheeks and she let them, having no energy whatsoever to wipe them away. It left when Jane did.
