Chapter 21

Hitsugaya Pov

"Rangiku, it's recruitment day." I walk through the office and notice my first lieutenant lying on the couch. She's holding her head.

"But Captain" she wines. She looks green. "Can't I do it another day."

"You know you can't" the first years have just finished their training mission yesterday. We need to go over reports and pick out our favorites before another regiment does. We'll be missing out on the absolute best if we wait another day.

She closes her eyes. "You were drinking again yesterday, weren't you?" it's not a question, but it is answered by soft snoring. I sigh loudly. There's no getting her to do this when she gets in this state. I'll have to go myself. I sigh again and leave the room.

The academy looks the same as it did last year, and the year before. The sun is hot on my neck but the soft breeze feels good going through my hair.

I walk over to Gengoro Onabara just as he finishes speaking to another recruiter. Onabara is the the chief instructor for class #1; the most advanced class.

I bow my head a little to show respect; he does the same. "What were the results of the training mission?" he knows what I'm asking.

"They all went smoothly with only minor injuries. All except one." I let him continue. "One of the groups ran into a Adjucha," my eyes grow large. "He must have caught whiff of the training mission and wanted to gain power by devouring multiple shinigami."

"What happened to the group?"

"They were lucky, only one of the members were killed. Three were injured and one of the three injured took out the Adjucha."

"Was it the leader?"

"No, the leader was rendered immobile early in the encounter. It was another member, Hinata Uzumaki. She is at the top of her class. It's as if she learned many of these skills in her previous life." He scratches his head. "She uses techniques I have never seen before, they are all completely or nearly developed." He stops speaking.

"Can I see her report?" I ask him. He looks at me, then over to another student.

"You," he points at the student who stops cold in his tracks. "Get Hinata Uzumaki's report and bring it to Captain Hitsugaya." The student runs into the office and Onabara leaves to talk with other recruiters.

I wait for the student to return with the file. I read over it carefully.

'Amazing,' Her entire encounter with the hollow only lasted at most five minutes. And in that time she awakens her Zanpakuto and wields her with wonderful mastery, taking him out in three seconds flat.

She was injured for almost the entirety of the time, only fainting (most likely from blood loss) after arriving back in the academy. She also demonstrated remarkable healing capabilities. The leader of the group couldn't even recognize the kido she used.

After requesting the rest of her file I find she is a very well rounded student. She seems a little shy but it is stated that she does well under pressure and can take on a leadership role when necessary.

I allow my eyes to role over her picture.

"Its her" I'm surprised enough to speak out loud. 'It's that girl from the pub.'

"Where is she now?"
