Chapter Twenty One
Katherine really didn't want to go into work today, just seeing the bright Mikaelson and Co. letters gave her goose bumps. She would gladly not wear heels for the rest of her life if it meant that she didn't have to face Elijah.
Elijah had quite a temper and she doubted that he had gotten over the fact that Katherine knew about the Damon and Elena affair and didn't bother telling him about it. But still, she fumed. It wasn't like she had told Damon and Elena to get together.
Her body was slightly shaking as she exited the elevator, she saw Stefan and Caroline whispering to each quietly before Stefan pulled away. "I'll talk to you, later." He said as he gave Caroline a quick kiss. He avoided her eyes as he quickly said good morning to her.
"What was that all about?" Katherine asked a nervous looking Caroline. "Did you two have a fight?"
Caroline ignored the question. "Oh, Katherine I'm so sorry!" she blurted out.
Katherine looked confused. "Sorry for what?"
Caroline pointed towards her desk, Katherine walked towards her desk and froze when she saw a signed check, her last paycheck and bright pink paper. She read it carefully and although she didn't understand half of it. She did understood two things: One she had been "asked" to leave (fired in other words) and would be given one last paycheck.
Katherine felt her anger boiling over as she crumbled the pink paper and threw it in the trash. How dare Elijah fire her? How could he be so childish about it? Sure, she might not have the best judgment outside of the office, but while working she had been nearly perfect and almost never complained with his ridiculous demands.
And over one petty little thing that didn't even affect the workforce he had decided to fire her? No way in hell.
Katherine stormed into his office, ignoring the small Do Not Disturb sigh. Elijah had been sitting at his desk without a care in the world when Katherine stormed in like a tornado and pressed both hands against his desk. "What the hell is wrong with you?"
The surprised look left Elijah's face quickly. "I believe I made my answer quite clear, Miss Pierce."
"Yeah, I saw your little pink present," she snapped. "Are you seriously doing this over some gossip? What are we thirteen?"
Elijah didn't respond, he simply looked at her.
Katherine narrowed her eyes, knowing she was losing the battle. Well, she wasn't going to go quietly. She grabbed the desk lamp that was sitting on his desk and threw it towards the small bookshelf, knocking down some books and breaking a blue vase.
"KATHERINE!"
"Have a nice life," she managed to say over her shoulder. She was surprised that she hadn't burst into tears. She ignored Caroline's cries of protest and Katherine continued walking, never once looking back.
"I need to talk to you." Katherine said nervously to Seth. They were standing in the middle of her apartment while Katherine tried to keep her head from exploding. She had so much on her mind right now, she had to find a new job, curse Elijah out, answer Caroline and Bonnie's dozens of worried messages, but worst of all she had to tell Seth the truth, that she had slept with Elijah.
The second biggest mistake of her life, but still she couldn't just let Seth suffer the consequences.
"About what?" Seth sounded amused. "And couldn't it wait?"
"No," Katherine said gripping the kitchen counter for support. She took in a deep breath and hoped that she didn't burst into tears at this second. "Seth, last night when we didn't go to dinner-"
"Kat, it was just dinner, I wasn't upset."
"Let me finish," she said tensely. "We can't go out anymore . . . last night I slept with Elijah."
Seth's face darkened and it took several minutes until he finally managed to open his mouth. "With your boss?"
She nodded slowly, feeling humiliated again. Katherine may be flirty, but she had never cheated on a guy before.
"Are you still in love with him? After what a dick he was?" he asked bitterly. He was the only other person other than Caroline and Bonnie who knew about the history between her and Elijah.
"Of course not!" Katherine blurted out.
"The why did you sleep with him?" he snarled. "You're mine! Not his!"
"I'm not anybody's!" she found herself snapping back. She got that Seth was upset, but that didn't mean that she was going to become someone's property. They didn't speak for another moment before Katherine pointed to the door. "You better leave. Seth, I'm sorry."
"Yeah, right." He said bitterly.
Katherine watched his retreating back and she jumped a little when the door closed harshly behind him. Here she was utterly alone.
